Abstract:Similar to Dorothy's journey along the yellow brick road in The Wizard of Oz, this perspective carves out the path I took from my early childhood fascinations with science through my independent career at the University of Michigan (maize and blue). The influential research projects and mentors are highlighted, including some fortuitous experimental results that drew me into the field of supramolecular chemistry, specifically, and organic materials, broadly. My research group's efforts toward designing new sensors based on small molecule gelators are described. In particular, I highlight how our design strategy has evolved as we learn more about molecular gelators. This perspective concludes with some predictions about where molecular gels, as well as my personal and professional life, are headed.

Abstract:Very few scholarly studies have been published on communicating chemistry to the public, and even less on publicly communicating chemistry research. Ccommunicating achievements in chemistry research, on the other hand, is an important component of research (and technology) management. New chemical products and new synthetic and analytical chemical processes often have a broad and lasting societal, economic and environmental impact. This trait, differentiating chemistry from other basic sciences, is reinforced by the sustainability challenge to make economic growth compatible with long-term well-being for all people and the environment. This study fills a gap in the literature and suggests avenues on how to conduct said communication based on the methodological autonomy of chemistry as scientific discipline.

Abstract:The celebration next week of the centenary of the Chemical Society (see Nature, July 5, p. 6), and the meeting of the International Congress of Pure and Applied Chemistry following it, afford a fitting opportunity to cast a glance at some of the more important applications of the science as they affect the daily life of the ordinary citizen. Despite progress in education, the great majority of people seem to have but an inkling of the part played by chemistry and its sister sciences in improving the material conditions of their existence, and very few have any real interest in the subject; they will grasp for an aspirin, grab for a ‘nylon’ stocking or a coat of many colours, they make full use of the modern rapid means of communication, and relish the margarine that now masquerades as butter, without a thought that these innovations are the outcome of long and patient research in chemistry, physics or biology. One may excuse such ignorance and apathy in those who were born in Victorian days, but there is less excuse for the younger generations, although these also have been handicapped at school in their range of interests by too much concentration on the distant past.
