Abstract:This essay briefly reviews the scientific career of Prof. Au-Chin Tang, showing his academic ideology and teaching style. In the middle of the last century, Prof. Tang trained talents independently and started to perform scientific researches. He founded the field of theoretical chemistry for China and made it prosperous. He attached particular importance to the teaching, and considered the learning of related courses as the necessary procedure for the scientists to lay a good foundation, open intelligence, cultivate interests and finally start researches. Therefore, he always taught systematically when recruiting new graduate students or holding workshops for high-level personnel. When setting up research projects, Prof. Tang paid special attention to the development of new theories and new methodologies and he advocated "big" and "difficult" projects. As for the recruitment and training for scientific employees, Prof. Tang welcomed both the persons with solid mathematical and physical foundations and the general chemical staffs. He intended to improve their theoretical levels and enhance their consensus through the teaching courses.

Abstract:For some professionally, vocationally, or technically oriented careers, curricula delivered in higher education establishments may focus on teaching material related to a single discipline. By contrast, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary teaching (MITT) results in improved affective and cognitive learning and critical thinking, offering learners/students the opportunity to obtain a broad general knowledge base. Chemistry is a discipline that sits at the interface of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) subjects (and those aligned with or informed by STEMM subjects). This article discusses the significant potential of inclusion of chemistry in MITT activities in higher education and the real-world importance in personal, organizational, national, and global contexts. It outlines the development and implementation challenges attributed to legacy higher education infrastructures (that call for creative visionary leadership with strong and supportive management and administrative functions), and curriculum design that ensures inclusivity and collaboration and is pitched and balanced appropriately. It concludes with future possibilities, notably highlighting that chemistry, as a discipline, underpins industries that have multibillion dollar turnovers and employ millions of people across the world.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Looking back at the history of science,the invention of any important instrument always has its origin in new concepts and principles put forward by theory.New concepts and principles can bring about original ideas for creative instrumentation,and ultimately help to promote the innovation of China's basic scientific research.Currently,theoretical and computational chemistry is in the boom years.This discipline has also undergone rapid development in China,where strong research teams have formed and many significant research progresses have been made.Development of novel computational methodology is an important component of theoretical development.Computer software is the key in translating theory into applications.There are many software platforms in the world,the majority of which are,nonetheless,made in the US or European countries.The consensus achieved from the 181th Shuang-Qing Forum is that,to meet the need of experimental science for the discovery and design of new chemical and materials systems,nextgeneration software developments are essential.China has great potential to lead the world efforts in theory and software development with the stable long-term support in parallel with the innovative development of large instrument and equipment.
Quantifying team chemistry in scientific collaboration

Abstract:Team chemistry is the holy grail of understanding collaborative human behavior, yet its quantitative understanding remains inconclusive. To reveal the presence and mechanisms of team chemistry in scientific collaboration, we reconstruct the publication histories of 560,689 individual scientists and 1,026,196 duos of scientists. We identify ability discrepancies between teams and their members, enabling us to evaluate team chemistry in a way that is robust against prior experience of collaboration and inherent randomness. Furthermore, our network analysis uncovers a nontrivial modular structure that allows us to predict team chemistry between scientists who have never collaborated before. Research interest is the highest correlated ingredient of team chemistry among six personal characteristics that have been commonly attributed as the keys to successful collaboration, yet the diversity of the characteristics cannot completely explain team chemistry. Our results may lead to unlocking the hidden potential of collaboration by the matching of well-paired scientists.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary Nature is an inspiring resource for chemists to exploit uncharted chemical spaces. Enzymes in nature are characteristic of high efficiency and exquisite stereocontrol under rather mild conditions. Not surprisingly, chemists have a long history in developing new catalysts by learning from and imitating the natural enzymes. This review summarizes our long-standing efforts in developing bio-inspired small molecular catalysis. These were categorized according to the employed strategies: 1) bi-/multi-functional strategy for the bio-inspired chiral primary amine catalyst; 2) cofactor strategy for bio-inspired ortho-quinone catalyst; 3) intermediate strategy for chiral latent carbocation catalysis based on natural carbocation process. Each section includes brief introduction of the biological origin, design of catalyst, development of methodology as well as the underlying mechanistic insights. What is the most favorite and original chemistry developed in your research group? I hope it's always the next one. How do you get into this specific field? Could you please share some experiences with our readers? Nature provides many astonishing catalytic machineries for building up molecular complexity and harnessing energy in the most efficient ways. Nature's recipe for catalysis serves as a starting point to develop new catalyst for synthetic and energy chemistry. I was trained as a synthetic chemist in a physical organic group in Nankai and ICCAS, and spent part of my graduate studies doing enzymatic synthesis of oligosaccharide and its related biological applications in Ohio State University. This gave me a mixed view on organocatalysis, then under its golden stage of renaissance, not only for its synthetic potentials as a new catalytic concept, but also with an eye on its biological origin and possible impact beyondsynthesis. I also benefit a lot from the physical organic chemistry training which helps to shape my research path in width and depth, in a way I never imagined and expected at the beginning of my career. How do you supervise your students? Try to inspire beyond instruct. I learned and am still learning. "(sic)?(sic)(sic) " is easy to say than to do. In reality, I become bossy the way I dislike and have to instruct heavily. What is the most important personality for scientific research? Curiosity, broad reading and sufficient "free time " for daydreaming. In order to have enough time to waste, you have to work really hard at first. Who influences you mostly in your life? My Ph.D. supervisor, Prof. Jin-Pei Cheng who teaches me a rational and quantitative view for chemistry and inspires me all the time to pursue a rational approach in research.

Abstract:Over time there have been occasional gatherings of intentionally broad sets of stakeholders to discuss the state of Chemistry Education and contemplate a future course for the field. The American Chemical Society has resources and networks that have been leveraged quite often in the planning of such events, and a recent meeting sought to “Empower Tomorrow’s Chemistry Innovators”. This gathering focused on issues of sustainability and the role of Green Chemistry in helping achieve it. Considering this summit in light of the history of such efforts over time is contemplated here.

Abstract:Next generation: Editorial Board Co-Chair Jian Pei, together with the other Editorial Board members from China, reflects on the interdisciplinary future of organic chemistry and how the young Chinese researchers featured in this issue are making that future reality. As one of the basic subjects of chemistry, organic chemistry is of significant importance at the forefront of creating new matter. As organic chemistry develops in breadth and depth, in addition to pure chemical synthesis, organic chemistry is comprehensively correlated with other research areas. Great efforts have been devoted to the interdisciplinary research that brings organic chemistry together with life science, materials science, medicine, energy storage, and organic electronics. The precise synthesis provides a library of molecular probes for the investigation of biological processes and mechanisms of drug action. Development of new synthetic methodologies and their application in the total synthesis of natural products have especially shown the charm of organic chemistry. More efficient and green synthetic methods have also rapidly diversified the organic materials, which facilitates the development of organic electronics towards light, flexible, low-cost and intelligent electronic products that greatly change our life. China is growing to become a leader in fundamental research. Organic chemistry in China, in particular, has seen rapid development in the past few decades. The boundary between organic chemistry and other chemistry branches is turning more unclear. National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) has funded innovation to encourage the emergence of new interdisciplinary and cutting-edge research areas. So far, a number of young scientists have dedicated themselves to exploiting organic chemistry in other research areas, which represents a future direction for the development of organic chemistry, especially in China. This special issue highlights the excellent work from some of the early career researchers in China, which cover a broad variety of frontiers of organic chemistry, including metal catalytic organic reactions for the efficient construction of special or ring substrates, DFT study of metal-catalyzed reaction mechanisms, synthesis of small molecules or polymers which are applied as fluorescent probes in living cells or electronic materials in organic solar cells and organic field-effect transistors. Finally, we would like to sincerely thank all the authors for submitting their excellent work, and we truly hope this special issue can provide inspiration to researchers for further creative investigations in organic chemistry.

Abstract:Events contributing to the establishment of statistics - the science of data - and its chemical branch are epitomized. As the new chemical branch named chemometrics or chemstatistics has been disputed in the circles of chemistry for a long time, reasons for adopting chemstatistics are given, which is defined as the science of gathering or generating,describing, summarizing and interpreting the data concerned to acquire new chemical knowledge or information. The fact that many traditional statistical methods, such as significance tests, analysis of variance, regression and correlation, and some others not usually considered statistical, such as model building, Monte Carlo method, Fourier transformation, artificial nerval networks and pattern recognition, each contains one or more of the five connotations of statistics is expounded. The regular pattern that a chemstatistician grows up is approached. The urgent task is to include chemstatistics in the undergraduate or graduate curriculum of chemistry specialty. The goal of the project is to nurture chemists who know statistics.

Abstract:The history of theoretical chemistry in China has been traced back since 1949. Starting from the original sterile state, the theoretical chemistry has gradually grown up into oasis with remarkable advances in some aspects. The development of theoretical chemistry can be divided into two periods with the year of 1978 as the boundary. The early growing-up time is marked by the research and teaching contributions from the pioneer ( as supervisor) and his students,and the latter booming time is being depicted by young generation,who made progress in main stream of theoretical chemistry. The advances in 10 typical aspects are reviewed in time sequence. By the end of this review,some outlooks and suggestions are given, especially for strengthen of fundamental teaching of chemistry department in universities and the training of physical chemistry (including theoretical chemistry).

Abstract:The field of chemistry is currently experiencing rapid advancements in science and technology,swift interdisciplinary integration,and explosion of information. One of the key challenges in graduate chemical education is the development of a new curriculum system which adapts itself to these new circumstances. In this article,efforts on constructing up-to-date curriculum in the Department of Chemistry,Fudan University are introduced. The department has focused on strengthening the foundation of chemical education,enhancing laboratory safety education,and integrating coursework with research activities. Specially,it has developed four foundational courses designed to integrate knowledge with skills and foster a spirit of scientific inquiry. Additionally,a comprehensive laboratory safety course has been implemented to cultivate safety consciousness and emergency response capabilities among students. Furthermore,in the curriculum reform,by removing the course boundaries between sub-disciplines,establishing a merit-based specialized training zone,and reforming the course assessment system,the integration of coursework and scientific research is strengthened.,

Abstract:Chemists have long utilized theories and models to rationalize empirical data and predict outcomes in new chemical systems. Unexpected reactivities often present themselves as exceptions or paradoxes, highlighting gaps in our current understanding and the limitations of (then) existing models. Rather than something to be disregarded, these exceptions offer valuable insights that can lead to the refinement of theories and the resolution of paradoxes, ultimately fostering scientific discovery. While the concept of scientific discovery described is not new, practically, it remains significantly underappreciated in the field of organic chemistry. This perspective article postulates possible epistemic origins of such unexpected chemical reactivities across various contexts, proposing a systematic approach to addressing these anomalies. Through a compilation of origins, supported by specific modern examples, this work aims to lay the groundwork for more comprehensive thinking that will help the field navigate future exploration. While the illustrative examples presented herein focus on physical organic chemistry, the concepts discussed are universally applicable across different fields in chemical science.

Being assembled into a special tribute issue in ES&T celebrating its founding editor Jim Morgan, this Perspective tells a few stories related to China, a country that he never visited but one where his research and vision have a profound influence. The following stories are inspiring accounts of people who made indelible contributions to this discipline. Through providing an international angle, this perspective aims to reinforce the global aquatic chemistry community's appreciation of our discipline's roots and continuous growth in China, as well as the significant contributions from China. Given the universality of scientific knowledge, we believe that similar stories exist in many other countries, cultures, and fields, where their pioneers are celebrated and remembered.
