Abstract:We prove that, for q odd, a set of q + 2 points in the projective plane over the field with q elements has at least 2 q − c odd secants, where c is a constant and an odd secant is a line incident with an odd number of points of the set.

Abstract:Let $q$ be a prime power and $k$ be a natural number. What are the possible cardinalities of point sets ${S}$ in a projective plane of order $q$, which do not intersect any line at exactly $k$ points? This problem and its variants have been investigated before, in relation with blocking sets, untouchable sets or sets of even type, among others. In this paper we show a series of results which point out the existence of all or almost all possible values $m\in [0, q^2+q+1]$ for $|S|=m$, provided that $k$ is not close to the extremal values $0$ or $q+1$. Moreover, using polynomial techniques we show the existence of a point set $S$ with the following property: for every prescribed list of numbers $t_1, \ldots t_{q^2+q+1}$, $|S\cap \ell_i|\neq t_i$ holds for the $i$th line $\ell_i$, $\forall i \in \{1, 2, \ldots, q^2+q+1\}$.

Abstract:We revisit the old idea of constructing difference sets from cyclotomic classes. Two constructions of skew Hadamard difference sets are given in the additive groups of finite fields by using union of cyclotomic classes of Fq of order N=2p1m, where p1 is a prime and m a positive integer. Our main tools are index 2 Gauss sums, instead of cyclotomic numbers.
Polynomial point counts and odd cohomology vanishing on moduli spaces of stable curves

Abstract:We compute the number of F_q-points on M_{4,n}, for n less than or equal to 3, and show that it is a polynomial in q, using a sieve based on Hasse-Weil zeta functions. As an application, we prove that the rational singular cohomology groups of moduli spaces of stable curves of genus g with n marked points vanish in all odd degrees less than or equal to 9, for all g and n. Both results confirm predictions of the Langlands program, via the conjectural correspondence with polarized algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of conductor 1, which are classified in low weight. Our vanishing result for odd cohomology resolves a problem posed by Arbarello and Cornalba in the 1990s.

Abstract:We say a closed point $x$ on a curve $C$ is sporadic if there are only finitely many points on $C$ of degree at most deg$(x)$. In the case where $C$ is the modular curve $X_1(N)$, most known examples of sporadic points come from elliptic curves with complex multiplication (CM). We seek to understand all sporadic points on $X_1(N)$ corresponding to $\mathbb{Q}$-curves, which are elliptic curves isogenous to their Galois conjugates. This class contains not only all CM elliptic curves, but also any elliptic curve $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isogenous to one with a rational $j$-invariant, among others. In this paper, we show that all non-CM $\mathbb{Q}$-curves giving rise to a sporadic point of odd degree lie in the $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-isogeny class of the elliptic curve with $j$-invariant $-140625/8$. In addition, we show that a stronger version of this finiteness result would imply Serre's Uniformity Conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a construction of $(q+1)$-ovoids of the hyperbolic quadric $Q^+(7,q)$, $q$ an odd prime power, by glueing $(q+1)/2$-ovoids of the elliptic quadric $Q^-(5,q)$. This is possible by controlling some intersection properties of (putative) $m$-ovoids of elliptic quadrics. It yields eventually $(q+1)$-ovoids of $Q^+(7,q)$ not coming from a $1$-system. Secondly, we also construct $m$-ovoids for $m \in \{ 2,4,6,8,10\}$ in $Q^+(7,3)$. Therefore we first investigate how to construct spreads of $\pg(3,q)$ that have as many secants to an elliptic quadric as possible.

Abstract:Given two irreducible conics $C$ and $D$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with $q$ odd, we show that there are $q^2/4+O(q^{3/2})$ points $P$ in $\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ such that $P$ is external to $C$ and internal to $D$. This answers a question of Korchmáros. We also prove the analogous result for higher-dimensional smooth quadric hypersurfaces over $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ with $n$ odd, where the answer is $q^{n-1}/4+O(q^{n-\frac{3}{2}})$.

Abstract:We construct a set of $2^n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that all pairwise Manhattan distances are odd integers, which improves the recent linear lower bound of Golovanov, Kupavskii and Sagdeev. In contrast to the Euclidean and maximum metrics, this shows that the odd-distance set problem behaves very differently to the equilateral set problem under the Manhattan metric. Moreover, all coordinates of the points in our construction are integers or half-integers, and we show that our construction is optimal under this additional restriction.

Dembowski's Theorem on Finite Inversive Planes of Even Order

Abstract:A remarkable theorem due to Peter Dembowski states that if $I$ is an inversive plane of even order $q$ then $q$ must be a power of two and $I$ must be the incidence system of points versus plane ovals in an ovoid in the projective $3$-space over the field of order $q$. In this paper we present a short and self-contained proof of this result. Our proof depends on the classification due to Benson of the symmetric and regular finite generalized quadrangles. Included here is a deduction of Benson's Theorem from the Dembowski-Wagner combinatorial characterization of finite projective geometries.

Abstract:In their solution to the orchard-planting problem, Green and Tao established a structure theorem which proves that in a line arrangement in the real projective plane with few double points, most lines are tangent to the dual curve of a cubic curve. We provide geometric arguments to prove that in the case of a simplicial arrangement, the aforementioned cubic curve cannot be irreducible. It follows that Grünbaum's conjectural asymptotic classification of simplicial arrangements holds under the additional hypothesis of a linear bound on the number of double points.

Abstract:We give restrictions on the weak combinatorics of line arrangements with singular points of odd multiplicity using topological arguments on locally-flat spheres in 4-manifolds. As a corollary, we show that there is no line arrangement comprising 13 lines and with only triple points.

On Distinct Angles in the Plane

Abstract:We prove that if $N$ points lie in convex position in the plane then they determine $N^{1+ 3/23-o(1)}$ distinct angles, provided the points do not lie on a common circle. This is the first super-linear bound on the distinct angles problem that has received recent attention. This is derived from a more general claim that if $N$ points in the convex position in the real plane determine $KN$ distinct angles, then $K=\Omega(N^{1/4})$ or $\Omega(N/K)$ points are co-circular. The proof makes use of the implicit order one can give to points in convex position, recently used by Solymosi. Convex position also allows us to divide our set into two large ordered pieces. We use the squeezing lemma and the level sets of repeated angles to estimate the number of angles formed between these pieces. We obtain the main theorem using Stevens and Warren's convexity versus sum-set bound.

Abstract:For three points $\vec{u}$,$\vec{v}$ and $\vec{w}$ in the $n$-dimensional space $\F_q^n$ over the finite field $\F_q$ of $q$ elements we give a natural interpretation of an acute angle triangle defined by this points. We obtain an upper bound on the size of a set $\cZ$ such that all triples of distinct points $\vec{u}, \vec{v}, \vec{w} \in \cZ$ define acute angle triangles. A similar question in the real space $\cR^n$ dates back to P. Erd{\H o}s and has been studied by several authors.

Abstract:We construct skew corner-free sets in $[n]^2$ of size $n^{5/4}$, thereby disproving a conjecture of Kevin Pratt. We also show that any skew corner-free set in $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{n} \times \mathbb{F}_{q}^{n}$ must have size at most $q^{(2-c)n}$, for some positive constant $c$ which depends on $q$.

On the structure of pointsets with many collinear triples

Abstract:It is conjectured that if a finite set of points in the plane contains many collinear triples then there is some structure in the set. We are going to show that under some combinatorial conditions such pointsets contain special configurations of triples, proving a case of Elekes' conjecture. Using the techniques applied in the proof we show a density version of Jamison's theorem. If the number of distinct directions between many pairs of points of a pointset in convex position is small, then many points are on a conic.

Abstract:A set in $\mathbb R^d$ is called almost-equidistant if for any three distinct points in the set, some two are at unit distance apart. First, we give a short proof of the result of Bezdek and Lángi claiming that an almost-equidistant set lying on a $(d-1)$-dimensional sphere of radius $r$, where $r<1/\sqrt{2}$, has at most $2d+2$ points. Second, we prove that an almost-equidistant set $V$ in $\mathbb R^d$ has $O(d)$ points in two cases: if the diameter of $V$ is at most $1$ or if $V$ is a subset of a $d$-dimensional ball of radius at most $1/\sqrt{2}+cd^{-2/3}$, where $c<1/2$. Also, we present a new proof of the result of Kupavskii, Mustafa and Swanepoel that an almost-equidistant set in $\mathbb R^d$ has $O(d^{4/3})$ elements.

Abstract:In the present paper, we revisit the geometry of smooth plane quartics and their bitangents from several perspectives. First, we study in detail the weak combinatorics of arrangements of bitangents associated with highly symmetric quartic curves. We consider quartic curves from the point of view of the order of their automorphism groups, in order to establish a lower bound on the number of quadruple intersection points for arrangements of bitangents associated with smooth plane quartics, which are smooth members of Ciani's pencil. We then construct new examples of $3$-syzygy reduced plane curves using smooth plane quartics and their bitangents.
