On line arrangements with odd multiplicities

Abstract:We give restrictions on the weak combinatorics of line arrangements with singular points of odd multiplicity using topological arguments on locally-flat spheres in 4-manifolds. As a corollary, we show that there is no line arrangement comprising 13 lines and with only triple points.

Abstract:In the present note we study combinatorial and algebraic properties of cubic-line arrangements in the complex projective plane admitting nodes, ordinary triple and $A_{5}$ singular points. We deliver a Hirzebruch-type inequality for such arrangement and we study the freeness of such arrangements providing an almost complete classification.

Abstract:We classify moduli spaces of arrangements of 10 lines with quadruple points. We show that moduli spaces of arrangements of 10 lines with quadruple points may consist of more than 2 disconnected components, namely 3 or 4 distinct points. We also present defining equations to those arrangements whose moduli spaces are still reducible after taking quotients of complex conjugations.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct an infinite series of line arrangements in characteristic two, each featuring only triple intersection points. This finding challenges the existing conjecture that suggests the existence of only a finite number of such arrangements, regardless of the characteristic. Leveraging the theory of matroids and employing computer algebra software, we rigorously examine the existence and non-existence across various characteristics of line arrangements with up to 19 lines maximizing the number of triple intersection points.

Abstract:We study the combinatorics of pseudoline arrangements in the real projective plane. Our focus lies on two classes of arrangements: simplicial arrangements and arrangements whose characteristic polynomials have only real roots. We derive inequalities involving the $t$-vectors of the arrangements in consideration. As application, we obtain some finiteness and classification results. Moreover, we are able to prove the Dirac Motzkin Conjecture for real pseudoline arrangements whose charateristic polynomials split over $\mathbb{R}$.

Abstract:In their solution to the orchard-planting problem, Green and Tao established a structure theorem which proves that in a line arrangement in the real projective plane with few double points, most lines are tangent to the dual curve of a cubic curve. We provide geometric arguments to prove that in the case of a simplicial arrangement, the aforementioned cubic curve cannot be irreducible. It follows that Grünbaum's conjectural asymptotic classification of simplicial arrangements holds under the additional hypothesis of a linear bound on the number of double points.

Abstract:The operator $\Lambda_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ acting on line arrangements is defined by associating to a line arrangement \mathcal{A}, the line arrangement which is the union of the lines containing exactly three points among the double points of \mathcal{A}. We say that six lines not tangent to a conic form an unassuming arrangement if the singularities of their union are only double points, but the dual line arrangement has six triple points, six 5-points and 27 double points. The moduli space of unassuming arrangements is the union of a point and a line. The image by the operator $\Lambda_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ of an unassuming arrangement is again an unassuming arrangement. We study the dynamics of the operator $\Lambda_{\{2\},\{3\}}$ on these arrangements and we obtain that the periodic arrangements are related to the Ceva arrangements of lines.

Abstract:This paper aims to undertake an exploration of the behavior of the moduli space of line arrangements while establishing its combinatorial interplay with the incidence structure of the arrangement. In the first part, we investigate combinatorial classes of arrangements whose moduli space is connected. We unify the classes of simple and inductively connected arrangements appearing in the literature. Then, we introduce the notion of arrangements with a rigid pencil form. It ensures the connectedness of the moduli space and is less restrictive that the class of $C_3$ arrangements of simple type. In the last part, we obtain a combinatorial upper bound on the number of connected components of the moduli space. Then, we exhibit examples with an arbitrarily large number of connected components for which this upper bound is sharp.

Abstract:In this note we focus on combinatorial aspects of plus-one generated line arrangements. We provide combinatorial constraints on such arrangements and we present new examples of plus-one generated arrangements constructed by using classical Klein and Wiman reflection arrangements, and we detect, among all known sporadic simplicial arrangements up to $27$ lines, exactly $9$ arrangements that are minimal plus-one generated.

Abstract:In the present note we focus on conic line arrangements in the plane with quasihomogeneous ordinary singularities from the perspective of weak Ziegler pairs. The foundations of this article come from an active area of research devoted to the freeness and nearly freeness of curve arrangements in the complex projective plane and the socalled Numerical Terao s Conjecture. This conjecture boils down to a very fundamental problem in combinatorial algebraic geometry, namely whether the weak combinatorics of a given arrangement determines the freeness.

Abstract:In this paper we present a smallest possible counterexample to the Numerical Terao's Conjecture in the class of line arrangements in the complex projective plane. Our example consists of a pair of two arrangements with $13$ lines. Moreover, we use the newly discovered singular matroid realization spaces to construct new examples of pairs of line arrangements having the same underlying matroid but different free resolutions of the Milnor algebras. Such rare arrangements are called Ziegler pairs in the literature.

Abstract:In this note, we show that extremal Szemerédi-Trotter configurations are rigid in the following sense: If $P,L$ are sets of points and lines determining at least $C|P|^{2/3}|L|^{2/3}$ incidences, then there exists a collection $P'$ of points of size at most $k = k_0(C)$ such that, heuristically, fixing those points fixes a positive fraction of the arrangement. That is, the incidence structure and a small number of points determine a large part of the arrangement. The key tools we use are the Guth-Katz polynomial partitioning, and also a result of Dvir, Garg, Oliveira and Solymosi that was used to show the rigidity of near-Sylvester-Gallai configurations.

Abstract:Constructing lattice isomorphic line arrangements that are not lattice isotopic is a complex yet fundamental task. In this paper, we focus on such pairs but which are not Galois conjugated, referred to as nonarithmetic pairs. Splitting polygons have been introduced by the author to facilitate the construction of lattice isomorphic arrangements that are not lattice isotopic. Exploiting this structure, we develop two algorithms which produce nonarithmetic pairs: the first generates pairs over a number field, while the second yields pairs over the rationals. Moreover, explicit applications of these algorithms are presented, including one complex, one real, and one rational nonarithmetic pair.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a hyperplane arrangement in a complex projective space. It is an open question if the degree one cohomology jump loci (with complex coefficients) are determined by the combinatorics of $\mathcal{A}$. By the work of Falk and Yuzvinsky \cite{FY}, all the irreducible components passing through the origin are determined by the multinet structure, which are combinatorially determined. Denham and Suciu introduced the pointed multinet structure to obtain examples of arrangements with translated positive-dimensional components in the degree one cohomology jump loci \cite{DS}. Suciu asked the question if all translated positive-dimensional components appear in this manner \cite{Suc14}. In this paper, we show that the double star arrangement introduced by Ishibashi, Sugawara and Yoshinaga \cite[Example 3.2]{ISY22} gives a negative answer to this question.

Improved Lower Bound on the Number of Pseudoline Arrangements

Abstract:We show that for large enough $n$, the number of non-isomorphic pseudoline arrangements of order $n$ is greater than $2^{c\cdot n^2}$ for some constant $c > 0.2604$, improving the previous best bound of $c>0.2083$ by Dumitrescu and Mandal (2020). Arrangements of pseudolines (and in particular arrangements of lines) are important objects appearing in many forms in discrete and computational geometry. They have strong ties for example with oriented matroids, sorting networks and point configurations. Let $B_n$ be the number of non-isomorphic pseudoline arrangements of order $n$ and let $b_n := \log_2(B_n)$. The problem of estimating $b_n$ dates back to Knuth, who conjectured that $b_n \leq 0.5n^2 + o(n^2)$ and derived the first bounds $n^2/6-O(n) \leq b_n \leq 0.7924(n^2+n)$. Both the upper and the lower bound have been improved a couple of times since. For the upper bound, it was first improved to $b_n < 0.6988n^2$ (Felsner, 1997), then $b_n < 0.6571 n^2$ by Felsner and Valtr (2011), for large enough $n$. In the same paper, Felsner and Valtr improved the constant in the lower bound to $c> 0.1887$, which was subsequently improved by Dumitrescu and Mandal to $c>0.2083$. Our new bound is based on a construction which starts with one of the constructions of Dumitrescu and Mandal and breaks it into constant sized pieces. We then use software to compute the contribution of each piece to the overall number of pseudoline arrangements. This method adds a lot of flexibility to the construction and thus offers many avenues for future tweaks and improvements which could lead to further tightening of the lower bound.

Abstract:An arrangement of hyperplanes is a finite collection of C-linear subspaces of codimension one in a complex vector space C-l. For such an arrangement A, there is a natural projective arrangement A* of hyperplanes in CPl-1 associated to it. Let M(A) = C-l-boolean OR(H is an element of A) H and M(A*) = CPl-1 - boolean OR H-H is an element of A**.One of central topics in the theory of arrangements is to find connections between the topology or differentiable structure of M(A) (or M(A*)) and the combinatorial geometry of A. A partial solution to this problem was given by Jiang and Yau [6]. Specially, they showed that for a class of nice arrangement in CP2, the diffeomorphic types of the complements are combinatorial in nature. In this paper, we introduce a Dew class of simple arrangements in CP2. This class of simple arrangements is much larger than the class of nice arrangements. We prove that for this new class of simple arrangements, the diffeomorphic types of the complements are still combinatorial in nature. In fact, the moduli space of simple arrangements with fixed combinatorial data is connected.
