Abstract:Metallic materials play a vital role in the economic life of modern societies; hence, research contributions are sought on fresh developments that enhance our understanding of the fundamental aspects of the relationships between processing, properties, and microstructures. Disciplines in the metallurgical field ranging from processing, mechanical behavior, phase transitions, microstructural evolution, and nanostructures, as well as unique metallic properties, inspire general and scholarly interest among the scientific community. Three of the most important elements are included in unit operations in non-ferrous extractive metallurgy: (1) hydrometallurgy (leaching under atmospheric and high-pressure conditions, mixing of a solution with a gas and mechanical parts, neutralization of a solution, precipitation and cementation of metals from a solution aiming at purification, and compound productions during crystallization), (2) pyrometallurgy (roasting, smelting, and refining), and (3) electrometallurgy (aqueous electrolysis and molten salt electrolysis). Advances in our understanding of unit operations in non-ferrous extractive metallurgy are required to develop new research strategies for the treatment of primary and secondary materials and their application in industry.

Abstract:As we enter the twenty-first century, the field of hydrometallurgy has emerged as a predominant force in extractive metallurgy, emphasizing the need for revitalization of various technologies applied to extractive metallurgy. As there have been numerous rethinking of the way we approach the field of extraction metallurgy, several developments have been introduced. In this paper, three areas of new developments in hydrometallurgy have been selected, and some impacts in metal extraction are discussed. (A) Thermodynamic calculations allow us to understand the effect of anions on the solubility of metal compounds. (B) Introduction of non-aqueous media, such as ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents, may represent a paradigm shift in the broad sense of hydrometallurgy in the future. (C) A combination of two or more processes, such as electrochemical cell and membrane technologies, may induce a synergistic effect in the metal production and separation processes.

Abstract:Modern hydrometallurgy has been developing for more than 100 years and the related articles keep piling up. Based on a bibliometric analysis of the articles in <em>Hydrometallurgy</em>, the most authoritative journal in the field of hydrometallurgy, we try to catch the research and development trends from a global perspective. Firstly, keywords burstness shows that rare earth, recycling, lithium, ionic liquid, and thorium are the hotspots in recent years, and the economic and technological reasons behind them were discussed in depth. Secondly, the proportion of biohydrometallurgy grows fast from 5% to 13% and the related articles are almost all about bioleaching. There are some new directions such as direct preparation of materials in hydrometallurgical processes and ion-imprinted techniques. Thirdly, the advanced instrument analysis methods such as XAFS (X-ray absorption fine structure), gene sequencing, and micro-CT promote the deep understanding of hydrometallurgy mechanism. Finally, the cooperation network and contribution of the main institutes were mapped.

Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review

Abstract:This review examines recent technological developments for recovering critical metals from mining and metallurgical waste streams, focusing on Co, Ga, Ge, In, Li, Ni, Re, Te, Sn, W, and V. Novel approaches using electrochemical methods, membranes, solvent extraction, and biomining are critically evaluated for their effectiveness and potential for industrial adoption. Key competitive advantages of these technologies are discussed, along with aspects requiring further research, such as process control, fouling issues, and microbial stability. The exploration of integrated and hybrid solutions combining different technologies is a potential game-changer for technology transfer. Finally, while these novel approaches show promise, further research is needed to overcome challenges related to cost, process control, and scalability. Addressing these issues is crucial for successfully transitioning these technologies from laboratory-scale experiments to industrial applications. By overcoming these hurdles, the mining and metallurgy sector can play a vital role in supplying critical metals for the zero-carbon transition while reducing its environmental impact and advancing toward a circular economy.

Abstract:Demand for technologies delivering renewable energy and improving energy efficiencies are set to increase with the worldwide movement towards low carbon economies. Many of these technologies are reliant on “critical metals”: metals considered both important to society and vulnerable to supply disruption. Significant concentrations of critical metals have reported to mining and processing wastes over time; thus, an opportunity exists to meet critical metal demand through re-processing of these wastes. Mining and processing wastes have significantly different properties to run of mine ores. This means that while the overall mineral processing sequence for mining and processing wastes is the same as run of mine ore, the best technologies to achieve the liberation, separation, and concentration of critical metals is different. There are a range of innovative technologies that can be used to liberate and separate critical metals from mining and processing waste. Mineral liberation can be achieved using stirred milling, which breaks up particles and removes hydrophilic surface that can prevent particle flotation. Particle separation based on size can be achieved using semi-inverted cyclones and hybrid classification technologies. Separation of minerals from gangue can be achieved using flotation, with fluidised bed reactors and reactor-separator induced air reactors being suitable for coarse and fine particles, respectively. Gravity concentration using counter flow fluidised bed separators is also suitable for separating minerals from gangue. This review provides an overview of these technologies, as well as an introduction to the sequence of events when undertaking mineral processing, for an audience not specialised in this discipline. However, extraction of any metal value from tailings is contingent on detailed mineralogical characterisation. Three case studies are presented to demonstrate the analysis that is necessary as a crucial first step towards valorisation. Ultimately, implementation of these technologies to extract critical metals from mining and processing wastes will not only aid in meeting future critical metal demand but is essential for achieving a sustainable circular mining system with near-zero waste.

Abstract:Hydrometallurgical gold recovery processes play a pivotal role in the gold mining industry, contributing to more than 90% of global gold production. Among the array of techniques available, the Merrill–Crowe process, adsorption, ion exchange, and solvent extraction are central in extracting gold from leach solutions. While the Merrill–Crowe process and gold complex adsorption onto activated carbon represent historical cornerstones, their inherent limitations have prompted the emergence of more recent innovations in ion exchange and solvent extraction, offering enhanced selectivity, control, and sustainability. The evolution of modern organic chemistry has significantly influenced the progress of ion exchange technology, mainly through the introduction of advanced polymer matrix synthetic resins. At the same time, novel solvents tailored to gold complex interactions have revitalized ion exchange and solvent extraction. Introducing ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents has also added a new dimension to efforts to improve gold extraction metallurgy. This paper reviews these cutting-edge developments and their potential to revolutionize the hydrometallurgical gold recovery process, addressing the pressing need for improved efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Abstract:Exploitation and utilization of mineral resources have played a vital role in China's rapid economic developments. Although the history of mineral processing is quite long, technologies in this field have varied with the changes of market demands. This is particularly the case for minerals whose high-grade deposits are depleting. The aim of this review is to present our recent efforts on developing new routes for the utilization of low-grade minerals, such as iron ores and brine-containing lithium. The emphasis on the two minerals lies in the fact that iron plays a vital role in modern-day civilization and lithium is a key component in electric vehicles for transportation. Furthermore, the utilization of magnesium chloride reserves, one of the largest wastes in western China, as raw materials for fabrication of functional materials is also included in this review.

Abstract:Population growth and technological progress in the last 50 years have resulted in the global demand for mineral resources increasing by 400% since 1970, and it is further expected to almost double by 2050. This context forecasts a never-seen-before market for some specific mineral commodities, termed critical metals. The resource and supply flow of critical metals would be decisive for the economic well-being of economies in near future. Carbonatites are the most prospective host rocks for Rare Earth Elements (REEs), which constitute some of the most important critical elements. This special issue aims to contribute to the debate on understanding the genesis of carbonatites and their prospectivity for REEs (including exploration strategies), by presenting a wide variety of studies on carbonatites from around the globe.
