Abstract:In the present paper the researches initiated in the two earlier papers of this series are continued, and, by suitable generalizations of the techniques employed therein, solutions are obtained to some further well known problems from the theory of transcendental numbers. It will be proved, for example, that a non-vanishing linear form, with algebraic coefficients, in the logarithms of algebraic numbers, cannot be algebraic. This implies, in particular, that π + log α is transcendental for any algebraic number α ≠ 0, and also eα π+ß is transcendental for all algebraic numbers α, β with β ≠ 0.

Abstract:We introduce the class of \emph{Log-Noetherian} (LN) functions. These are holomorphic solutions to algebraic differential equations (in several variables) with logarithmic singularities. We prove an upper bound on the number of solutions for systems of LN equations, resolving in particular Khovanskii's conjecture for Noetherian functions. Consequently, we show that the structure ${\mathbb R}_\text{LN}$ generated by LN-functions, as well as its expansion ${\mathbb R}_\text{LN,exp}$, are effectively o-minimal: definable sets in these structures admit effective bounds on their complexity in terms of the complexity of the defining formulas. We show that ${\mathbb R}_\text{LN,exp}$ contains the horizontal sections of regular flat connections with quasiunipotent monodromy over algebraic varieties. It therefore contains the universal covers of Shimura varieties and period maps of polarized variations of $\mathbb Z$-Hodge structures. We also give an effective Pila-Wilkie theorem for ${\mathbb R}_\text{LN,exp}$-definable sets. Thus ${\mathbb R}_\text{LN,exp}$ can be used as an effective variant of ${\mathbb R}_\text{an,exp}$ in the various applications of o-minimality to arithmetic geometry and Hodge theory.

Abstract:The history of the theory of linear forms in logarithms is well known. We shall briefly sketch only some of the moments connected with new technical progress and important for our article. This theory was originated by pioneer works of A.O. Gelfond (see, for example, [5, 6]); with the help of the ideas which arose in connection with the solution of 7-th Hilbert problem (construction of auxiliary functions, extrapolation of zeros and small values), the bounds for the homogenous linear forms in two logarithms were proved. In the middle of the sixties A. Baker, [1], using auxiliary functions in several complex variables, for the first time obtained bounds for linear forms in any number of logarithms, both in the homogenous and non-homogenous cases. All further development of the theory is connected with improvements of these bounds. So N.I. Feldman introduced the so-called binomial polynomials in the construction of the auxiliary function, and due to this the dependence of the bounds on the coefficients of the linear forms was improved. The Kummer theory was used by A. Baker and H. Stark, [2], to improve the dependence of the estimates on the parameters related to the algebraic numbers appearing as arguments of the logarithms. The further improvements of this dependence are connected with the introduction of bounds for the number of zeros of polynomials on algebraic groups in works of G. Wüstholz. [14], P. Philippon and M. Waldschmidt, [11], A. Baker and G. Wüstholz, [3].

Abstract:We provide a technique to obtain explicit bounds for problems that can be reduced to linear forms in three complex logarithms of algebraic numbers. This technique can produce bounds significantly better than general results on lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms. We give worked examples to demonstrate both the use of our technique and the improvements it provides. Publicly shared code is also available.

We consider the moments of maxn≥1|Sn|/2nloglogn. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the moments to be finite are given. As an application, we obtain the law of the iterated logarithm for moving average processes of independent and identically distributed random variables.

Abstract:We introduce a new framework called linear algebraic number theory (LANT) that reformulates the number-theoretic problem as a regression model and solves it using matrix algebra. This framework restricts all computations to log space, therefore replaces multiplication with addition and allows to capture variation in the natural numbers from variation in the prime numbers. This automatically puts prime numbers to their designated place of atomic particles of natural numbers and enables fruitful new formulations of number-theoretic functions. We outline the theory, derive some basic results, make connections to standard number theory and give an outlook regarding the Riemann hypothesis, number theory's long-standing enigma.

Abstract:Lueck expressed the Gromov norm of a knot complement in terms of an infinite series that can be computed from a presentation of the fundamental group of the knot complement. In this note we show that Lueck's formula, applied to torus knots, yields surprising power series expansions for the logarithm function. This generalizes an infinite series of Lehmer for the natural logarithm of 4.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the (possible) solutions of the equation $\exp_{*}(f)=g$, where $g$ is a slice regular never vanishing function on a circular domain of the quaternions $\mathbb{H}$ and $\exp_{*}$ is the natural generalization of the usual exponential to the algebra of slice regular functions. Any function $f$ which satisfies $\exp_{*}(f)=g$ is called a $*$-logarithm of $g$. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions, expressed in terms of the zero set of the ``vector'' part $g_{v}$ of $g$, for the existence of a $*$-logarithm of $g$, under a natural topological condition on the domain $\Omega$. By the way, we prove an existence result if $g_{v}$ has no non-real isolated zeroes; we are also able to give a comprehensive approach to deal with more general cases. We are thus able to obtain an existence result when the non-real isolated zeroes of $g_{v}$ are finite, the domain is either the unit ball, or $\mathbb{H}$, or $\mathbb{D}$ and a further condition on the ``real part'' $g_{0}$ of $g$ is satisfied (see Theorem 6.19 for a precise statement). We also find some unexpected uniqueness results, again related to the zero set of $g_{v}$, in sharp contrast with the complex case. A number of examples are given throughout the paper in order to show the sharpness of the required conditions.

On the Computation of the Logarithm of the Modified Bessel Function of the Second Kind

Abstract:The modified Bessel function of the second kind K$\nu$ appears in a wide variety of applied scientific fields. While its use is greatly facilitated by an implementation in most numerical libraries, overflow issues can be encountered especially for large value of $\nu$. After giving some necessary and sufficient conditions for their occurrences, this technical note shows that they can mostly be avoided by directly computing the logarithm of K$\nu$ thanks to a simple and stable forward recursion. A statistical examples based on the Gil-Pelaez inversion formula is given to illustrate the recursive method.

Abstract:Let $[\, \cdot\,]$ be the floor function. In this paper we show that every sufficiently large positive integer $N$ can be represented in the form \begin{equation*} N=[p_1\log p_1]+[p_2\log p_2]+[p_3\log p_3], \end{equation*} where $p_1,\, p_2,\, p_3$ are prime numbers. In this paper we establish some generalizations of these formulas of Ramanujan in a setting that only recently reemerged in the literature and which concerns a beautiful theory due to Koshliakov.

Abstract:We shall make use of the method of partial fractions to generalize some of Ramanujan's infinite series identities, including Ramanujan's famous formula for $\zeta(2n+1)$, and we shall also give a generalization of the transformation formula for the logarithm of the Dedekind eta function. It is shown here that the method of partial fractions can be used to obtain many similar identities of this kind.
