Abstract:Log-atomic numbers are surreal numbers whose iterated logarithms are monomials, and consequently have a trivial expansion as transseries. Presenting surreal numbers as sign sequences, we give the sign sequence formula for log-atomic numbers. To that efect, we relate log-atomic numbers to fixed-points of certain surreal functions.

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Abstract:We extend the axiomatization for detecting and quantifying sign changes of Meher and Murty to sequences of complex numbers. We further generalize this result when the sequence is comprised of the coefficients of an $L$-function. As immediate applications, we prove that there are sign changes in intervals within sequences of coefficients of GL(2) holomorphic cusp forms, GL(2) Maass forms, and GL(3) Maass forms. Building on previous works by the authors, we prove that there are sign changes in intervals within sequences of partial sums of coefficients of GL(2) holomorphic cusp forms and Maass forms.

Abstract:Signifiable computability aims to separate what is theoretically computable from what is computable through performable processes on computers with finite amounts of memory. Real numbers and sequences thereof, data types, and instances are treated as finite texts, and memory limitations are made explicit through a requirement that the texts be stored in the available memory on the devices that manipulate them. In Part I of our investigation, we define the concepts of signification and reference of real numbers. We extend signification to number tuples, data types, and data instances and show that data structures representable as tuples of discretely finite numbers are signifiable. From the signification of real tuples, we proceed to the constructive signification of multidimensional matrices and show that any data structure representable as a multidimensional matrix of discretely finite numbers is signifiable.

Counting Sets with Surreals. Part I: Sets of Natural Numbers

Abstract:How many odd numbers are there? How many even numbers? From Galileo to Cantor, the suggestion was that there are the same number of odd, even and natural numbers, because all three sets can be mapped in one-one fashion to each other. This jars with our intuition. Cardinality fails to discriminate between sets that are intuitively different in size. The class of \emph{surreal numbers} $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{No}}$ is the largest possible ordered field. In this work we define a function, the \emph{magnum}, mapping the power set of the natural numbers to a subclass of the surreals, the {surnatural numbers} $\boldsymbol{\mathsf{Nn}}$ (the non-negative omnific integers). Set magnums are found to be consistent with our intuition about relative set sizes. The magnum of a proper subset of a set is strictly less than the magnum of the set itself, in harmony with Euclid's axiom ``the whole is greater than the part''. Two approaches are taken to specify magnums. First, they are determined by following the genetic assignment of magnums in the way the surreal numbers themselves are defined. Second, the counting sequence, which is defined for every set of natural numbers, is extended using a Transfer Axiom, to evaluate it on the surnatural numbers. The two methods are shown to be consistent. Several theorems are proved, establishing that the family of sets with magnums form what we call a magnum space. Finally, these theorems are employed to evaluate the magnums of a number of subsets of $\mathbb{N}$.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of numerosity, a measure of a set's size, more precise than cardinality and satisfying the Euclid's principle "the whole is greater than a part" as a surreal number and provide an explicit formula for expressing numerosities of some sequences that have no accumiulation points as surreal expressions, with examples. Then we introduce a surreal-valued function that shares many properties with Dirac Delta distribution and employ it to derive some integration properties of surrreal values. Finally, we provide a formula for integrating a surreal-valued function over surreal domain, employing numerosity in a way, similar to Lebesgue measure and derive some novel formulas, connecting surreal numbers via integration. The suggested here method of surreal integration is different from methods suggested by other authors in not satisfying the property of linearity regarding infinite factors. In our opinion, the struggle to keep this rule intact is the reason for many failed attempts to define the surreal integration. For the suggested formulas, code in Wolfram Mathematica language is provided.

The discussion shows that they are quite good in their linear complexities, and their linear complexities are quite robust under symbol substitution. A result about pseudorandomness of these kinds of sequences is given.

Abstract:Lochs' theorem and its generalizations are conversion theorems that relate the number of digits determined in one expansion of a real number as a function of the number of digits given in some other expansion. In its original version, Lochs' theorem related decimal expansions with continued fraction expansions. Such conversion results can also be stated for sequences of interval partitions under suitable assumptions, with results holding almost everywhere, or in measure, involving the entropy. This is the viewpoint we develop here. In order to deal with sequences of partitions beyond positive entropy, this paper introduces the notion of log-balanced sequences of partitions, together with their weight functions. These are sequences of interval partitions such that the logarithms of the measures of their intervals at each depth are roughly the same. We then state Lochs-type theorems which work even in the case of zero entropy, in particular for several important log-balanced sequences of partitions of a number-theoretic nature.

Abstract:The Hilbert space of an RSOS-model, introduced by Andrews, Baxter, and Forrester, can be viewed as a space of sequences (paths) {a_0,a_1,...,a_L}, with a_j-integers restricted by 1<=a_j<=\nu, |a_j-a_{j+1}|=1, a_0=s, a_L=r. In this paper we introduce different basis which, as shown here, has the same dimension as that of an RSOS-model. Following McCoy et al, we call this basis -- fermionic (FB). Our first theorem Dim(FB)=Dim(RSOS-basis) can be succinctly expressed in terms of some identities for binomial coefficients. Remarkably, these binomial identities can be q-deformed. Here, we give a simple proof of these q-binomial identities in the spirit of Schur's proof of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. Notably, the proof involves only the elementary recurrences for the q-binomial coefficients and a few creative observations. Finally, taking the limit L --> \infty in these q-identities, we derive an expression for the character formulas of the unitary minimal series M(\nu,\nu+1) "Bosonic Sum = Fermionic Sum". Here, Bosonic Sum denotes Rocha-Caridi representation (\chi_{r,s=1}^{\nu,\nu+1}(q)) and Fermionic Sum stands for the companion representation recently conjectured by the Stony Brook group.

Abstract:For any Liouville number $\alpha$, all of the following are transcendental numbers: $\textrm{e}^\alpha$, $\log_\textrm{e}\alpha$, $\sin \alpha$, $\cos\alpha$, $\tan\alpha$, $\sinh\alpha$, $\cosh\alpha$, $\tanh\alpha$, $\arcsin\alpha$ and the inverse functions evaluated at $\alpha$ of the listed trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, noting that wherever multiple values are involved, every such value is transcendental. This remains true if "Liouville number" is replaced by "$U$-number", where $U$ is one of Mahler's classes of transcendental numbers.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the iteration of infinitely many signed exponentials with the same base but the signs may vary. We show that for every base in an explicit interval this iteration converges for any sequence of signs and all the real numbers are possible limits. We give some more results for a base outside this interval.

Abstract:In the course of proving a tenability result about the probabilities of conditionals, van Fraassen (1976) introduced a semantics for conditionals based on omega-sequences of worlds, which amounts to a particularly simple special case of ordering semantics for conditionals. On that semantics, 'If p, then q' is true at an omega-sequence just in case q is true at the first tail of the sequence where p is true (if such a tail exists). This approach has become increasingly popular in recent years. However, its logic has never been explored. We axiomatize the logic of omega-sequence semantics, showing that it is the result of adding two new axioms to Stalnaker's logic C2: one, Flattening, which is prima facie attractive, and, and a second, Sequentiality, which is complex and difficult to assess, but, we argue, likely invalid. But we also show that when sequence semantics is generalized from omega-sequences to arbitrary (transfinite) ordinal sequences, the result is a more attractive logic that adds only Flattening to C2. We also explore the logics of a few other interesting restrictions of ordinal sequence semantics. Finally, we address the question of whether sequence semantics is motivated by probabilistic considerations, answering, pace van Fraassen, in the negative.

Abstract:We introduce an $L$-series associated to real-analytic modular forms which transform with weight $(r,s)\in\mathbb{Z}^2$ under $\Gamma_0(N)$. These $L$-series satisfy a functional equation and converse theorem. We also discuss examples of such forms, including real analytic Eisenstein series and modular iterated integrals of higher level. We focus on the $L$-series for a class of forms including Francis Brown's length-one modular iterated integrals $\mathcal{MI}^!_1$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce sequence complexity and sequence mean complexity. It turns out that a topological dynamical system is uniformly rigid if and only if it has bounded topological sequence complexity; A measure preserving system is rigid if and only if it has bounded measure theoretic sequence complexity if and only if it has bounded measure theoretic sequence mean complexity. We obtain a formula of measure-theoretic entropy of an ergodic measure preserving system. We also prove that a topological dynamical systems (X, T) meets the Logarithmic Sarnak conjecture if each invariant measure of (X, T) has sub-linear measure theoretic sequence mean complexity.

Spectral sequences of universal distribution and Sinnott's index formula

Abstract:We prove an abstract index formula about Sinnott's symbol between two different lattices. We also develop the theory of the universal distribution and predistribution in a double complex point of view. The theory of spectral sequence is used to interpret the index formula and to analyze the cohomology of the universal distribution. Combing these results, we successfully prove Sinnott's index formula about the Stickelberger ideal. In addition, the {1, -1}-cohomology groups of the universal distribution and the universal predistribution are obtained.

Abstract:We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.
