Abstract:In this paper we consider the iteration of infinitely many signed exponentials with the same base but the signs may vary. We show that for every base in an explicit interval this iteration converges for any sequence of signs and all the real numbers are possible limits. We give some more results for a base outside this interval.

Abstract:In this paper, we present five different formulas for both discrete and fractional iterations of an invertible power series $f$ utilizing a novel and unifying approach from umbral calculus. Established formulas are extended, and their proofs simplified, while new formulas are introduced. In particular, through the use of $q$-calculus identities, we eliminate the requirement for $f'(0)$ to equal $1$ and, consequently, the corresponding new expressions for the iterative logarithm are derived.

Limits with Signed Digit Streams

Abstract:We work with the signed digit representation of abstract real numbers, which roughly is the binary representation enriched by the additional digit -1. The main objective of this paper is an algorithm which takes a sequence of signed digit representations of reals and returns the signed digit representation of their limit, if the sequence converges. As a first application we use this algorithm together with Heron's method to build up an algorithm which converts the signed digit representation of a non-negative real number into the signed digit representation of its square root. Instead of writing the algorithms first and proving their correctness afterwards, we work the other way round, in the tradition of program extraction from proofs. In fact we first give constructive proofs, and from these proofs we then compute the extracted terms, which is the desired algorithm. The correctness of the extracted term follows directly by the Soundness Theorem of program extraction. In order to get the extracted term from some proofs which are often quite long, we use the proof assistant Minlog. However, to apply the extracted terms, the programming language Haskell is useful. Therefore after each proof we show a notation of the extracted term, which can be easily rewritten as a definition in Haskell.

Abstract:For an alternate base $\boldsymbol{\beta}=(\beta_0,\ldots,\beta_{p-1})$, we show that if all rational numbers in the unit interval $[0,1)$ have periodic expansions with respect to the $p$ shifts of $\boldsymbol{\beta}$, then the bases $\beta_0,\ldots,\beta_{p-1}$ all belong to the extension field $\mathbb Q(\beta)$ where $\beta$ is the product $\beta_0\cdots\beta_{p-1}$ and moreover, this product $\beta$ must be either a Pisot or Salem number. We also prove the stronger statement that if the bases $\beta_0,\ldots,\beta_{p-1}$ belong to $\mathbb Q(\beta)$ but the product $\beta$ is neither a Pisot number nor a Salem number then the set of rationals having an ultimately periodic $\boldsymbol{\beta}$-expansion is nowhere dense in $[0,1)$. Moreover, in the case where the product $\beta$ is a Pisot number and the bases $\beta_0,\ldots,\beta_{p-1}$ all belong to $\mathbb Q(\beta)$, we prove that the set of points in $[0,1)$ having an ultimately periodic $\boldsymbol{\beta}$-expansion is precisely the set $\mathbb Q(\beta)\cap[0,1)$. For the restricted case of Rényi real bases, i.e., for $p=1$ in our setting, our method gives rise to an elementary proof of Schmidt's original result. Therefore, even though our results generalize those of Schmidt, our proofs should not be seen as generalizations of Schmidt's original arguments but as an original method in the generalized framework of alternate bases, which moreover gives a new elementary proof of Schmidt's results from 1980. As an application of our results, we show that if $\boldsymbol{\beta}=(\beta_0,\ldots,\beta_{p-1})$ is an alternate base such that the product $\beta$ of the bases is a Pisot number and $\beta_0,\ldots,\beta_{p-1}\in\mathbb Q(\beta)$, then $\boldsymbol{\beta}$ is a Parry alternate base, meaning that the quasi-greedy expansions of $1$ with respect to the $p$ shifts of the base $\boldsymbol{\beta}$ are ultimately periodic.

Abstract:Some parameter-depending linking theorems are established, which allow to produce a bounded and sign-changing Palais–Smale sequence. For even functionals, a parameter-depending fountain theorem is obtained which provides infinitely many bounded and sign-changing Palais–Smale sequences. A variant mountain pass theorem is built in cones which yields bounded, positive and negative Palais–Smale sequences. The usual Palais–Smale type compactness condition and its variants are completely not necessary for these theories. More exact locations of the critical sequences can be determined. The abstract results are applied to the Schrödinger equation with (or without) critical Sobolev exponents:−Δu+V(x)u=β|u|2*−2u+f(x,u),x∈RN,β⩾0, where 2* is the critical Sobolev exponent. The existence of (multiple) sign-changing solutions is obtained. The positive and negative solutions are also gained as by-products. We will also show that this Schrödinger problem with jumping nonlinearity is independent of the Fučík spectrum.

Abstract:We treat three recurrences involving square roots, the first of which arises from an infinite simple radical expansion for the Golden mean, whose precise convergence rate was made famous by Richard Bruce Paris in 1987. A never-before-seen proof of an important formula is given. The other recurrences are non-exponential yet equally interesting. Asymptotic series developed for each of these two examples feature a constant, dependent on the initial condition but otherwise intrinsic to the function at hand.

Exponential sums equations and the Exponential Closedness conjecture

Abstract:This is an expository paper aiming to introduce Zilber's Exponential Closedness conjecture to a general audience. Exponential Closedness predicts when (systems of) equations involving addition, multiplication, and exponentiation have solutions in the complex numbers. It is a natural statement at the boundary between complex geometry and algebraic geometry. While it is open in full generality, many special cases and variants have been proven in the last two decades. In the first part of the paper we give a proof of a special case of the conjecture, namely, we show that exponential sums in a single complex variable, such as $e^{\sqrt{2}z}+3i e^{5z}+\pi$, always have infinitely many zeroes. This follows from well-known results in the literature and can actually be proven by standard complex analytic tools. We present a proof, motivated by the ideas of Zilber and Gallinaro, which uses simplified versions of some ingredients of more advanced techniques in the area, thus allowing the reader to explore these advanced proofs on a simple example. Our approach uses only elementary techniques (from standard undergraduate algebra and complex analysis), and the proofs of some of the main ingredients appear to be new. Moreover, these ingredients come from various areas of mathematics, such as functional transcendence and complex geometry, and are a useful way of introducing some classical concepts in these areas to the reader. In the second part we explain the Exponential Closedness conjecture and discuss some known special cases, not least the so-called ``raising to powers'' case (due to Gallinaro) which generalises the above-mentioned result and whose proof uses advanced versions of the tools presented in the first part of the paper.

Abstract:We obtain strong invariance principles for normalized multiple iterated sums and integrals of the form $\bbS_N^{(\nu)}(t)=N^{-\nu/2}\sum_{0\leq k_1<...<k_\nu\leq Nt}\xi(k_1)\otimes\cdots\otimes\xi(k_\nu)$, $t\in[0,T]$ and $\bbS_N^{(\nu)}(t)=N^{-\nu/2}\int_{0\leq s_1\leq...\leq s_\nu\leq Nt}\xi(s_1)\otimes\cdots\otimes\xi(s_\nu)ds_1\cdots ds_\nu$, where $\{\xi(k)\}_{-\infty<k<\infty}$ and $\{\xi(s)\}_{-\infty<s<\infty}$ are centered stationary vector processes with some weak dependence properties. These imply also laws of iterated logarithm and an almost sure central limit theorem for such objects. In the continuous time we work both under direct weak dependence assumptions and also within the suspension setup which is more appropriate for applications in dynamical systems. Similar results under substantially more restricted conditions were obtained in \cite{FK} relying heavily on rough paths theory and notations while here we obtain these results in a more direct way which makes them accessible to a wider readership. This is a companion paper of our paper "Limit theorems for signatures" and we consider a similar setup and rely on many result from there.

We explore some basic properties of the convergence exponent as a real-valued function defined on the closed unit interval, as well as those of the level sets of the function. Abstract:We discuss a general approach producing quantitative bounds on the number of sign changes of the weighted sums $$\sum_{n\le x}f(n)w_n$$ where $f:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}$ is a family of multiplicative functions and $w_n\in\mathbb{R}$ are certain <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://weights.As" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> a consequence, we show that for a typical fundamental discriminant $D,$ the partial sums of the real character $\chi_D$ change sign $\gg (\log\log D)/\log\log\log \log D$ times on very short initial interval (which goes beyond the range in Vinogradov's conjecture). We also prove that the number of real zeros (localized away from $1$) of the Fekete polynomial associated to a typical fundamental discriminant $D$ is $\gg \frac{\log\log D}{\log\log\log\log D}.$ This comes close to establishing a conjecture of Baker and Montgomery which predicts $\asymp \log \log D$ real zeros. Finally, the same approach shows that almost surely for large $x\ge 1$, the partial sums $\sum_{n\le y}f(n)$ of a (Rademacher) random multiplicative function exhibit $\gg \log \log x/\log \log\log\log x$ sign changes on the interval $[1,x].$ These results rely crucially on uniform quantitative estimates for the joint distribution of $-\frac{L'}{L}(s, \chi_D)$ at several points $s$ in the vicinity of the central point $s=1/2$, as well as concentration results for $\log L(s,\chi_D)$ in the same range, which we establish. In the second part of the paper, we obtain, for large families of discriminants, ``non-trivial" upper bounds on the number of real zeros of Fekete polynomials, breaking the square root bound. Finally, we construct families of discriminants with associated Fekete polynomials having no zeros away from $1.$

Abstract:We prove that the Kloosterman sum $\text{Kl}(1,q)$ changes sign infinitely many times, as $q\rightarrow +\infty$ with at most two prime factors. As a consequence, our result is unconditional compared with Drappeau and Maynard's (Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 2019), in which the existence of Laudau-Siegel zeros is required. Our arguments contain the Selberg sieve method, spectral theory and distribution of Kloosterman sums along with previous works by Fouvry, Matomäki, Michel, Sivak-Fischler, and Xi.

Abstract:This paper investigates a variant of the famous "happy numbers" sequence, given by A351327 on the oeis. First of all we'll define this integer sequence, and then we'll show some important results about it; in particular we conjectured that if $k$ is a term of the sequence, then it converges to 1 in a number of steps less or equal to 3. Furthermore it will be possible to find some codes written in Wolfram language in order to compute large terms of the sequence and to support our hypothesis. At the end we'll explore some new conjectures and generalizations about this kind of integer sequence.

Abstract:We prove that given $\lambda \in \mathbb{R}$ such that $0 < \lambda < 1$, then $\pi(x + x^\lambda) - \pi(x) \sim \displaystyle \frac{x^\lambda}{\log(x)}$. This solves a long-standing problem concerning the existence of primes in short intervals. In particular, we give a positive answer (for all sufficiently large number) to some old conjectures about prime numbers, such as Legendre's conjecture about the existence of at least two primes between two consecutive squares.

Abstract:We consider numbers of the form $S_\beta(\boldsymbol{u}):=\sum_{n=0}^\infty \frac{u_n}{\beta^n}$ for $\boldsymbol{u}=\langle u_n \rangle_{n=0}^\infty$ a Sturmian sequence over a binary alphabet and $\beta$ an algebraic number with $|\beta|>1$. We show that every such number is transcendental. More generally, for a given base~$\beta$ and given irrational number~$\theta$ we characterise the $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-linear independence of sets of the form $\left\{ 1, S_\beta(\boldsymbol{u}^{(1)}),\ldots,S_\beta(\boldsymbol{u}^{(k)}) \right\}$, where $\boldsymbol{u}^{(1)},\ldots,\boldsymbol{u}^{(k)}$ are Sturmian sequences having slope $\theta$. We give an application of our main result to the theory of dynamical systems, showing that for a contracted rotation on the unit circle with algebraic slope, its limit set is either finite or consists exclusively of transcendental elements other than its endpoints $0$ and $1$. This confirms a conjecture of Bugeaud, Kim, Laurent, and Nogueira.
