Abstract:We report on fabrication of microresonators of high quality (high-Q) factors in both glass and crystalline materials by femtosecond laser 3D micromachining. Based on this novel approach, we obtained high-Q microresonators of non-in-plane geometries in glass materials such as fused silica and Nd:glass and demonstrated lasing at a pump power as low as 69 microwatts. We also fabricated on-chip microresonators of sub-100 mu m diameters in crystalline materials including calcium fluoride and lithium niobate, and demonstrated efficient second harmonic generation using the high-Q lithium niobate microresonator. Furthermore, femtosecond laser 3D micromachining allows direct integration of the microresonators with other functional microcomponents, such as a microfluidic mixer and a microheater, leading to compact microdevices with enhanced functionalities. Our technique opens new avenues for fabricating high-Q microresonators with either 2D or 3D geometries on various types of dielectric materials.
Fabrication of Optical Cavities with Femtosecond Laser Pulses

Abstract:We report on fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) high-quality (Q) whispering-gallery-mode microcavities by femtosecond laser micromachining. The main fabrication procedures include the formation of on-chip freestanding microdisk through selective material removal by femtosecond laser pulses, followed by surface smoothing processes (CO2 laser reflow for amorphous glass and focused ion beam (FIB) sidewall milling for crystalline materials) to improve the Q factors. Fused silica microcavities with 3D geometries are demonstrated with Q factors exceeding 106. A microcavity laser based on Nd:glass has been fabricated, showing a threshold as low as 69μW via free space continuous-wave optical excitation at the room temperature. CaF2 crystalline microcavities with Q factor of ~4.2×104 have also been demonstrated. This technique allows us to fabricate 3D high-Q microcavities in various transparent materials such as glass and crystals, which will benefit a broad spectrum of applications such as nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and bio-sensing.

Abstract:We report on fabrication of whispering-gallery-mode microlasers in a Nd:glass chip by femtosecond laser three-dimensional micromachining. The main fabrication procedures include the fabrication of freestanding microdisks supported by thin pillars by femtosecond laser ablation of the glass substrate immersed in water, followed by CO2 laser annealing for surface smoothing. The quality (Q) factor of the fabricated microcavity is measured to be 1.065×10(6). Lasing is observed at a pump threshold as low as ~69 μW at room temperature with a continuous-wave laser diode operating at 780 nm. This technique allows for fabrication of microcavities of high Q factors in various dielectric materials, such as glasses and crystals.

Abstract:Novel Bragg grating waveguide structures have been fabricated in bulk borosilicate glass through a type II photosensitivity mechanism driven by single femtosecond laser pulses. Low-loss single-mode waveguides and narrow-linewidth Bragg gratings were generated simultaneously by forming an array of refractive index voxels in a single laser scan. Laser pulse duration is shown to significantly affect the grating strength and waveguide loss. Bragg wavelengths, defined by the periodicity of laser-modified volumes, were fully controlled by the sample scan speed to provide resonances anywhere in the 1200-1620 nm telecommunication bands. Four linear Bragg filters with distinct resonant wavelengths are presented that define the first demonstration of laser writing of multiple-wavelength and cascaded Bragg grating waveguides in a single process step.

Abstract:The femtosecond-laser-writing technique provides a flexible method for fabrication of nonlinear photonic crystals in three dimensions, providing structures that enable efficient complex nonlinear wave interactions and modulation for applications including nonlinear holography, nonlinear beam shaping, and waveguide-integrated wavelength conversion. However, the tightly focused laser pulse inevitably causes structural modification and then changes the local refractive index, resulting in additional linear modulation of the interacting waves. Here, we use the same periodic distributions of the refractive index and the second-order nonlinear coefficient for grating arrays engineered in lithium niobate crystals by femtosecond laser writing to achieve polarization-dependent linear and nonlinear Bragg diffractions simultaneously. The experimental results show that the linear and nonlinear diffraction efficiencies range up to 31% and 2.9 × 10−5, respectively, for grating arrays with dimensions of 100 μm (x) × 100 μm (y) × 100 μm (z). This work paves the way toward the realization of the multiplexing of linear and nonlinear optical modulations in a single structure for potential applications that include multidimensional optical data storage and optical coding.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser direct-writing is an attractive technique to fabricate fiber Bragg gratings and to achieve through-the-coating inscription. In this article, we report the direct inscription of high-quality first-order gratings in optical fiber, without the use of an index-matching medium. A new alignment technique based on the inscription of weak probe gratings is used to track the relative position between the focal spot and fiber core. A simple and flexible method to precisely control the position of each grating plane is also presented. With this method, periodic phase modulation of grating structures is achieved and used to inscribe arbitrary apodization and phase profiles. It is shown that a burst of multiple laser pulses used to inscribe each grating plane leads to a significant increase in the grating strength, while maintaining low insertion loss, critical for many applications.

Analysis on Volume Grating Induced by Femtosecond Laser Pulses

Abstract:We report on a kind of self-assembled volume grating in silica glass induced by tightly focused femtosecond laser pulses. The formation of the volume grating is attributed to the multiple microexplosion in the transparent materials induced by the femtosecond pulses. The first order diffractive efficiency is in dependence on the energy of the pulses and the scanning velocity of the laser greatly, and reaches as high as 30%. The diffraction pattern of the fabricated grating is numerically simulated and analyzed by a two dimensional FDTD method and the Fresnel Diffraction Integral. The numerical results proved our prediction on the formation of the volume grating, which agrees well with our experiment results.

Abstract:Chalcogenide glass (ChG) fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is one of the key components in monolithic infrared fiber lasers and sensors. However, its effective fabrication using direct femtosecond laser writing is still seldom reported, owing to complications attributable to ChG. In this study, a double-D shaped ChG fiber was used to fabricate FBGs with high reflectivity (a 20.5 dB dip in the transmittance) and narrow 3-dB bandwidth (164 pm) using direct femtosecond laser writing. The high sensitivity to laser powers of the direct writing of the ChG FBG was revealed and understood from the perspective of the low laser-induced damage threshold of ChGs. Lower-order reflectance of the directly written FBGs at the mid-infrared wavelength region were quantitively predicted to have higher reflectivity. These results provide a robust method of writing FBGs with arbitrary periods in ChG fibers, establishing a solid foundation for the development of infrared fiber lasers and fiber sensors.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser writing is applied to form Bragg grating waveguides in the diamond bulk. Type II waveguides are integrated with a single pulse point-by-point periodic laser modification positioned toward the edge of the waveguide core. These photonic devices, operating in the telecommunications band, allow for simultaneous optical waveguiding and narrowband reflection from a fourth-order grating. This fabrication technology opens the way toward advanced 3D photonic networks in diamond for a range of applications.

Abstract:We present a controllable fabrication of nanogratings and nanosquares on the surface of ZnO crystal in water based on femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). The formation of nanogrooves depends on both laser fluence and writing speed. A single groove with width less than 40 nm and double grooves with distance of 150 nm have been produced by manipulating 800 nm femtosecond laser fluence. Nanogratings with period of 150 nm, 300 nm and 1000 nm, and nanosquares with dimensions of 150 × 150 nm2 were fabricated by using this direct femtosecond laser writing technique.
Femtosecond Laser Modification of Silica Optical Waveguides for Potential Bragg Gratings Sensing

Abstract:The optimum femtosecond laser direct writing of Bragg gratings on silica optical waveguides has been investigated. The silica waveguide has a 6.5 × 6.5 µm2 cross-sectional profile with a 20-µm-thick silicon dioxide cladding layer. Compared with conventional grating inscribed on fiber platforms, the silica planar waveguide circuit can realize a stable performance as well as a high-efficiency coupling with the fiber. A thin waveguide cladding layer also facilitates laser focusing with an improved spherical aberration. Different from the circular fiber core matching with the Gaussian beam profile, a 1030-nm, 400-fs, and 190-nJ laser is optimized to focus on the top surface of the square silica waveguide, and the 3rd-order Bragg gratings are inscribed successfully. A 1.5-mm long uniform Bragg gratings structure with a reflectivity of 90% at a 1548.36-nm wavelength can be obtained. Cascaded Bragg gratings with different periods are also inscribed in the planar waveguide. Different reflection wavelengths can be realized, which shows great potential for wavelength multiplexing-related applications such as optical communications or sensing.
