Abstract:Femtosecond laser pulses with ultrashort time duration and ultrahigh peak power can cause the refractive index change in transparent materials and micron scale machining precision. Long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) with different periods and different grating lengths in the standard single mode fiber were fabricated, using laser direct writing method, by femtosecond laser pulses with pulse width of 200 fs at a center wavelength of 800 nm in air. The transmission spectra were studied in the range of 1510 nm to 1610 nm. Two LPFGs with period of 400 μm, and 550 μm, respectively fabricated with same irradiation power of 275 mW, were shown. The loss peak of 1552 nm, the transmission loss of 16 dB and the FWHM of 20 nm were obtained when the period of LPFG was 400 μm, while the loss peak of 1588 nm, the transmission loss of 20 dB and the FWHM of 25 nm were achieved when the period of LPFG was 550 μm. According to the theory of mode field coupling for long period grating, it was indicated that the modulation of refractive index Δn was in the level of 10 -2 .

Abstract:Long-period fiber gratings are inscribed in all-solid photonic bandgap fibers by use of a femtosecond laser with the line-scanning method. The coupling from the fundamental core mode to LP11 core mode can be readily obtained and the resonant wavelength of the grating is found to be highly sensitive to tensile strain while being nearly insensitive or only slightly sensitive to temperature, curvature, and external refractive index. Such gratings can be effectively used in stable spectral filters and optical fiber sensors with largely reduced cross-sensitivity.

Abstract:A small-period long-period grating (LPG) with a period of $40\mu \text{m}$ fabricated in a single-mode fiber by femtosecond laser direct writing has been demonstrated. A series of high-order Bragg resonant peaks of Bragg grating and attenuation bands of LPG can be observed simultaneously in the broadband spectrum range that exhibited different responses to surrounding refractive index, temperature, and axial strain. Meanwhile, we provided a sensitivity matrix to correct the errors caused by temperature in measurements of refractive index and strain to achieve a dual-parameter fiber sensor at high temperature.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the fabrication and characterization of long-period fiber grating in few-mode fiber (FMF-LPFGs) by using the femtosecond laser direct writing technique. Thanks to the high flexibility and repeatability of this technique, stable FMF-LPFGs fabrication technology has been developed. In addition, the properties of FMF-LPFGs have also been characterized. The coupling of LP 01 - LP 11 and LP 01 - cladding mode LP 13 were investigated by both the transmission spectrum and the mode patterns. The temperature, strain and twist sensitivities of the resonance dips were calibrated by experiments, and the sensitivity difference between the dips was explained. By using their disparate responses to external temperature and strain, a cross coefficient matrix was established and dual-parameter discrimination determination is realized. This work provides a thoroughly theoretical and experimental investigation on the fabrication and characterization of FMF-LPFGs based on femtosecond laser direct writing technique. It is believed that the flexible and efficient LPFGs fabrication technique will benefit a lot in the future for developing various functional specialty optical fiber devices and sensors.

Abstract:Abstract To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to propose and verify a novel and simple direct inscription method for long-period fibre gratings (LPFGs) with an arbitrary grating period using a sinusoidal intensity modulated femtosecond laser. This method induces a sine refractive index modulation, which makes the LPFGs have no higher-order harmonic resonance that exists in the normal square-wave modulation method. This is beneficial for reducing the insertion loss of the LPFGs and optimising the transmission spectrum. Using this method, we also conveniently realise the inscription of superimposed, apodised, and chirped LPFGs. This work presents a simple but effective inscription scheme for various types of LPFGs using a femtosecond laser.

Abstract:The use of near infrared, high intensity femtosecond laser pulses for the inscription of long period fiber gratings in photonic crystal fiber is reported. The formation of grating structures in photonic crystal fiber is complicated by the fiber structure that allows wave-guidance but that impairs and scatters the femtosecond inscription beam. The effects of symmetric and asymmetric femtosecond laser inscriptions are compared and the polarization characteristics of long period gratings and their responses to external perturbations are reported.

Abstract:We compare and contrast novel techniques for the fabrication of chirped broadband fiber Bragg gratings by ultrafast laser inscription. These methods enable the inscription of gratings with flexible period profiles and thus tailored reflection and dispersion characteristics in non-photosensitive optical fibers. Up to 19.5 cm long chirped gratings with a spectral bandwidth of up to 30 nm were fabricated and the grating dispersion was characterized. A maximum group delay of almost 2 ns was obtained for linearly chirped gratings with either normal or anomalous group velocity dispersion, demonstrating the potential for using these gratings for dispersion compensation. Coupling to cladding modes was reduced by careful design of the inscribed modification features.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, we present a method to fabricate long period gratings in standard telecommunications single mode fibers (SSMF), using a femtosecond laser system. A numerical model based on the coupled mode theory was developed and implemented with the aim to guide and improve the inscribing technique. This model takes in consideration the specifications of the inscription technique. Using this model, we have analyzed the behavior of the gratings for different irradiation lengths per period, refractive index modulation values and considering first and second order coupling with different cladding modes. LPGs inscribed in SSMF are presented, its transmission spectra were analyzed and a good agreement between the numerical results and the experimental LPGs was achieved. The sensitivity to temperature of the produced LPGs was also characterized, attaining different sensitivities for different attenuation peaks.</p>

Abstract:In this letter, we reported long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) fabricated by femtosecond laser pulses direct writing in grapefruit microstructured fiber. The mode field distribution and dispersion property of this fiber was analyzed by finite- element method. Two LPFGs were fabricated with different periods of 230 and 250 mu m, the resonant dips appeared at the wavelengths of 1325.8 and 1449.4 nm, respectively. In addition, sensing characteristics of the LPFG with the period of 250 mu m were investigated in theory and experiment. The experimental results show that the strain and temperature sensitivities are 1.88 pm/mu epsilon and 0.267 pm/degrees C, respectively. It indicates that the temperature cross sensitivity is as low as 0.142 mu epsilon/degrees C.

Abstract:The method of femtosecond laser inscription by slit-apertured beam is applied for fabrication of long-period fiber gratings in polarization-maintaining Panda-type fiber. Polarization properties as well as ambient refractive index sensitivity are investigated for the inscribed gratings. It is shown that the method allows us to create high-quality element for the use as spectral filter of high-power fiber laser as well as high-temperature sensor.

Abstract:Long-period gratings induced in fluoride glass fibers using femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm are, to the best of our knowledge, demonstrated for the first time. By means of tightly confined ultrashort laser pulses, smooth periodic lines of refractive index changes are induced along the fiber core. Taking advantage of heat accumulation effects in the focal volume, attenuation peaks down to -24 dB, with sharp and predictable spectral resonances, were obtained. Thermal annealing of the grating up to 250°C yielded a significant reduction of the induced refractive index change. The gratings could find applications in various integrated mid-infrared optical devices, such as optical notch filters in fiber amplifiers.
