Abstract:Experimental studies on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anodes in the literature report varying compositions, whereas theoretical models commonly assume uniform particle sizes or specific microstructures, often failing to account for the complexities and variability inherent in synthesized or commercial powders. This research addresses these gaps by proposing a method based on synthetically generating 3D anode utilizing actual particle size distributions and subsequently computing the resultant three-phase boundary (TPB) formations to identify the optimal anode composition. For this purpose, the particle size distributions of commercially available NiO and yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) powders are measured, and the obtained data are used to generate various virtual anodes with different solid volume ratios and compositions. The computational results indicate that the active TPB density can be boosted by using fine powders. On the other hand, the solid volume fraction of phases is also crucial and should be decided based on the particle size data to ensure phase percolation. As a result, the optimal composition of the anodes considered in this study varies depending on the initial powders properties. In this regard, the larger the particle size of a phase, the greater its volume fraction needs to be to achieve high performance.
