Abstract:An axial adjustable common-path interferometric phase imaging system with simple structure is proposed based on the theory of interference imaging. In this design, making full use of the reversibility of the optical path and the reflection and refraction characteristics of the splitter prism, the incident beam is split into two parallel beams by a prism. One beam is incident on the sample and reflected by the reflecting stage as object light, and the other beam is directly reflected as reference light. The interferograms can be captured by combining object beam with reference beam through the same beam splitter. The interferometer can achieve different types of interference by adjusting the angle between the layer of the beam splitter prism and the optic axis. Taking Fourier transform and three steps phase shift norm method as examples, the phase of the interference fringe is recovered, and the performance of the system is evaluated by the analysis of the results. The feasibility of the proposed design for biological cells phase imaging is demonstrated. The system has the characteristics of simple structure, easy operation and low system error, which can provide an easy and simple method for label-free morphological detection of homogeneous cell.
Two-dimensional Surface Profile Imaging Technique Based on a Double-Grating Frequency Shifter

Abstract:A two-dimensional surface profile imaging technique that uses a low-coherence heterodyne interferometer is proposed. A double-grating frequency shifter was used in a tandem interferometer to provide the achromatic frequency shift for low-coherence light. A chopper, together with a processing circuit, was implemented to modulate the interference fringes. The surface profile was measured from the interference fringes taken by a CCD camera using a five-step method. The uncertainty in the displacement measurement is 0.34 microm for a displacement range of 43 microm. The surface profile of a glass sample with low effective reflectivity was acquired.

Abstract:Traditional phase retrieval methods for Ronchi lateral shearing interferometry eliminate the impact of high diffraction orders by increasing the number of phase-shifting interferograms, however, this introduces additional error in the phase-shifting process. We propose an optimization method combining a 2-frame phase-shifting algorithm to achieve accurate wavefront reconstruction. A numerical model matching the physical model is constructed and the cross-iterative gradient descent method is used to optimize the initial results obtained by the two-step phase-shifting method. The accuracy and robustness of the method are verified by simulations and experiments. The proposed method has the advantages of achieving high-precision wavefront reconstruction and correcting the phase-shifting errors, and it significantly simplifies the process of phase shift.

Abstract:A double-grating frequency shifter for low-coherence heterodyne interferometry is proposed. Compared with conventional frequency shifting methods, the new frequency shifter can generate frequency shift without additional optical path delay between different wavelengths. It also in principle has no scanning range limitation because the scanning mirror moves in a part of an optical system where different wavelength constituents of the light propagate in the same direction. To demonstrate the effectivity of the frequency shifter, a Twyman–Green interferometer was connected with the frequency shifter through an optical fiber. Displacement values measured by the low-coherence heterodyne interferometer have a standard deviation of 0.09μm for a displacement range of 50μm.

Abstract:Phase detection is one of the most important processing steps in optical phase-shifting interferometry. It aims to reconstruct the phase field of wavefront from the interferogram. To solve this problem, many algorithms of phase detection have been proposed these years. Here, A FFT-based two-step phase shifting (TPS) algorithm is described in detail and implemented by use of experimental interferograms. This algorithm has been proposed to solve the TPS problem with random phase shift except π. By comparison with the Visibility-Function-based TPS algorithm, it proves that the FFT-based algorithm has obvious advantages in phase extracting. Meanwhile, we present a π-phase-shift supplement to the TPS algorithm, which combines the two interferograms and demodulates the phase map from a combined interferogram. So combining this quasi-two-step method and FFT-based one, one could really implement the TPS with random phase shift. Thereafter, we design an optical setup of two-channel TPS interferometer with random phase shift, which could capture the two interferograms simultaneously. At the same time, we propose a fringe-variable Jamin interferometer to detect reversed domain of ferroelectric crystal in real time. It could realize the two-step phase shifting with π radian.

Abstract:A compact quadriwave lateral shearing interferometer (QWLSI) with strong adaptability and high precision is proposed based on a novel randomly encoded hybrid grating (REHG). By performing the inverse Fourier transform of the desired ±1 Fraunhofer diffraction orders, the amplitude and phase distributions of the ideally calculated quadriwave grating can be obtained. Then a phase chessboard is introduced to generate the same phase distribution, while the amplitude distribution can be achieved using the randomly encoding method by quantizing the radiant flux on the ideal quadriwave grating. As the Faunhofer diffraction of the REHG only contains the ±1 orders, no order selection mask is ever needed for the REHG-LSI. The simulations and the experiments show that the REHG-LSI exhibits strong adaptability, nice repeatability, and high precision.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel interferometer and signal process to retrieve two-dimensional signals with multilevel phases. The interferometer is based on a shearing interferometry with double-frequency grating, and phase-shifting interferometry is derived as a built-in function of the lateral displacement of the grating. The interferometer not only retrieves the multilevel phase signals but also eliminates slow-varying phase errors wherever they occur. Owing to the common path algorithm, the new interferometer is more robust in dynamic circumstances for optical testing and data processing. We propose a pre-integral signal process for two-dimensional (2D) data processing to prevent post-phase-integral due to shearing interferometry. The simulation and experiment showed that the proposed interferometer with a pre-integral process has various advantages in signal processing for multilevel phase retrieval, and will be useful for higher data rates in optical data storage and free-space communication.

Abstract:Two-shot random phase-shifting interferometry has been actively investigated and improved owing to more demanding requirements in investigating dynamic phenomena or sensing some transient events. Given the background intensity and phase step knowledge, a reconstruction algorithm can be used to recover a complex-valued signal from intensity-only measurements. Most algorithms assume the background intensity and modulation amplitude in a frame of interferogram are constant variables; however, in realistic systems, they vary laterally and axially across the field of view. The model can be used but often appears less precise. In this work, we propose an approach that leverages the iterative method to cope with spatially varying background intensity and modulation amplitude. Our approach, termed the two-frame advanced iterative self-tuning algorithm, uses the spatial mean algorithm paired with an iterative procedure to search the phase step from two captured fringe patterns. It represents a novel approach to reliable and practical two-step phase-shifting interferometry without pre-filtering due to the cancelation of simultaneously obtaining the phase shifts and measured phase through iterative operation in the spatial–temporal domain. Experimental results obtained using the proposed method indicate that it is a simple and robust solution for phase extraction from a two-frame unknown phase shift fringe pattern with spatially varying background intensity and modulation amplitude.

Abstract:A spatial phase-shifting shearing interferometry is presented in this paper. The whole optical configuration is simple and consists of three Ronchi gratings. Four phase-shifted shearing interferograms can be obtained simultaneously. The explicit intensity distributions of shearing interferograms are given and a corresponding four-step spatial phase-shifting algorithm is proposed to extract phase information from the new interferometry. This spatial phase-shifting configuration is applied to extract phase projection of a propane flame and a mathematical error analysis is presented.

Abstract:Dual-wavelength interferometry is an important technique, which is widely used in optical measurement and microscopy imaging. In this study, a phase extraction method using derivative algorithm for simultaneous dual-wavelength three-frame phase-shifting interferometry is proposed. Only by calculating the difference between the first and other interferograms as well as its first-order and second-order derivatives, one can separate the information of single-wavelength and obtain continuous phase of the synthetic wavelength. The phase shift can be any value between (0,2π). Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that this method can be used to dual-wavelength on-axis and off-axis interferometric imaging systems with high accuracy. Since only three phase-shifted interferograms are required and only partial derivative algorithm is used, the imaging speed is faster.

Abstract:A method is proposed and demonstrated to improve a diffraction grating displacement sensor to simultaneously achieve nanometer-level resolution and an extended range of operation. The method exploits the polarization phase-shifting optical path to extract two sinusoidal signals with a quadrature phase shift. The interpolation circuit is applied to nonlinearly convert two sinusoidal signals into a standard incremental AB quadrature digital signal, implementing an extended operation range with the magnitude of a laser coherence length. This work enables displacement measurement operated at large-scale range, and provides a significant guide for the design of a high performance micro-displacement sensor. Abstract:Parallel two-step phase-shifting point-diffraction interferometry for microscopy based on a pair of cube beamsplitters is proposed. The first 45°-tilted cube beamsplitter splits object wave into two parallel copies: one copy is filtered by a pinhole in its Fourier plane to behave as reference wave, while the other one remains unchanged as object wave. The second cube beamsplitter combines the object and reference waves, and then split them together into two beams. Along with the two beams, two parallel phase-shifting interferograms are obtained in aid of polarization elements. Based on the proposed configuration, slightly-off-axis interferometry for microscopy is performed, which suppresses dc term by subtracting the two phase-shifting holograms from each other. The setup is highly stable due to its common-path configuration, and has been demonstrated to be suitable for measuring moving objects or dynamic processes.

Abstract:To obtain higher phase accuracy with less computation time in phase-shifting interferometry, a random phase-shifting algorithm based on principal component analysis and least squares iteration (PCA&LSI) is proposed. The algorithm does not require pre-filtering, and only requires two-frame phase-shifted interferograms and less computation time to obtain a relatively accurate phase distribution. This method can still extract the phase with high precision when there are few fringes in the interferogram. Moreover, it eliminates the limitation that the PCA algorithm needs more than three frames of interferograms with uniform phase shift distribution to accurately extract the phase. Numerical simulations and experiments confirm that the method is suitable for complex situations with different fluctuations in background intensity and modulation amplitude. And it can still achieve accurate phase extraction compared with other methods under different noise conditions.

Abstract:In this study, a simultaneous dual-wavelength phase-shifting interferometry system using two reference arms was built, and a simple phase retrieval method for the system with blind phase shifts was proposed using five phase-shifted interferograms. First, the unknown phase shifts were controlled independently to separate the information of single wavelength, which can be calculated directly by using the Euclidean matrix norm algorithm. Second, a wrapped phase of a single wavelength was obtained using a three-step phase-shifting algorithm. Finally, a continuous phase of a synthetic wavelength was obtained. The simulation and experimental results indicated the feasibility and greater accuracy of the proposed method. Moreover, the strict requirement of the phase shifter was eliminated because of the use of arbitrary and unknown phase shifts, thereby making experimental operation easier.
Two-step phase-shifting interferometry for phase-resolved imaging from a spatial light modulator

Abstract:We demonstrate two-step phase-shifting interferometry (holography) of complex laser modes generated by a spatial light modulator (SLM), in which the amplitude and phase of the signal are determined directly from measurements of phase-shifted interferograms. The reference and signal beams are generated and phase-controlled with a single composite hologram on the SLM and propagated collinearly. This requires no additional optics and leads to measurements that are more accurate and less prone to noise, which we demonstrate with collinearly-referenced measurements of various Laguerre-Gaussian modes and structured images.

Abstract:An on-line Phase Measuring Profilometry(PMP)based on least-square iteration was proposed to simplify the complexities of system installment and to avoid the influence of additional phase ?shifting caused by the non-parallelism between grating lines and object's displacement in the PMP based on synchronous detection.In measurement processing,the sinusoidal grating with arbitrary grid line direction was projected onto an object,and a CCD was used to capture the deformed fringe patterns.After pixel matching,fringe patterns were used to evaluate the phase distribution.The phase-shifting was determined as arbitrary values by both projection system and object's displacement.Finally,the least-square iteration was used to calculate the phases.The experiment result shows when the grating line directions on the reference plane are changed,the measurement resultsare stable,and the root-mean-square error is less than 0.169 9mm.It concludes that the proposed method relaxes the restriction of the spatial location of measurement equipment,increases the measurement flexibility and makes the PMP more applicable.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel dynamic 2-step phase-shifting interferometry method with a geometric phase grating and direct aberration-free object phase recovery algorithm. By exploring the amplitude-phase modulation property of the geometric phase grating, two-step phase-shifting interferograms with phase shift can be obtained in a single shot through two kinds of spatial-multiplexing arrangements. Then the desired object phase without being disturbed by the system aberration phase would be formed based on the presented 2-step phase-shifting phase demodulation process. Accordingly, a detailed analysis of the theoretical model of error sources is conducted by taking the depolarization error of geometric phase grating and phase measurement model error into consideration, with a Least Squares Iteration optimization strategy established to further improve the measurement accuracy. Experiments on various types of phase objects, such as a photo-etched quartz substrate, the spatial light modulator, and a silicon chip, validate the effectiveness and accuracy of our method when compared with the reference phase obtained from 4-step temporal phase-shifting method. The dynamic phase measurement capability is demonstrated by exhibiting the evaporation process of alcohol droplet.

Abstract:We propose a high-precision 2D grating displacement measurement system based on double-spatial heterodyne optical path interleaving. The system is based on Doppler-steering interferometry of 2D gratings, heterodyne interferometry, and double-spatial element-staggered configuration. We obtain long-stroke and high-precision real-time 2D displacement information using the optical phase change and interference signal decoupling caused by the 2D grating. The system is tested experimentally and compared with a laser interferometer, and found to have a measurement resolution within 3 nm. The error within a measurement of 40 mm is better than ±175 nm and ±150 nm in the 2D grating directions. The design is then optimized and tested, and the resulting error within the 40-mm range is better than +50 nm and −40 nm in the X-direction and +100 nm and −80 nm in the Y-direction. The results show that the proposed configuration improves the accuracy of the measurement system, is suitable for engineering testing, and has the potential for further improvement.
