Bio-inspired design and fabrication of bio-based, synergistic and halogen-free flame retardant system for reducing the fire hazard of silicone rubber based on transition metal-modified tannic acid and ammonium polyphosphate

Abstract:Inspired by the natural thermal charring capacity of lacquer tree bark, a novel halogen-free, bio-based and two-component synergistic flame retardant system has been constructed by introducing transition metal (Fe 3+ )-modified tannic acid (TA) as char source and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as acid source, which was employed for overcoming the severe flammability problem for silicone rubber (SR). By systematically investigating the effect of APP/TA@Fe system on the flame retardancy of SR composites, it has been found that when 40 mass% APP and TA@Fe in a ratio of 3:1 are added, the limited oxygen index (LOI) and vertical combustion tests of SR composites can reach 30% and UL-94 V-0 rating with a rapid self-extinguishing capacity. Through the comprehensive analysis of the residues of SR composites after complete burning, a gas/condensed flame retardant mechanism is primarily proposed in detail. Among these, the ammonia and water vapor released by the decomposition of APP and TA@Fe during combustion can dilute the combustible gases and tannic acid will act via the free radicals scavenging ability. Besides, the continuous, intumescent and dense charring residues from the thermal interaction between APP and TA will exert a prominent role in restricting the heat/mass exchange process and inhibiting the SR matrix from further flame attacking. Surprisingly, the mechanical strength of SR system is attained even if the combination of APP and TA@Fe is blended. Consequently, this article has developed a bionic, eco-friendly and effective approach to settle the flammability problem of SR and broaden their applications in the fields of construction and decoration materials.
