Abstract:Silicone rubber (SR), as one kind of highly valuable rubber material, has been widely used in many fields, e.g., construction, transportation, the electronics industry, automobiles, aviation, and biology, owing to its attractive properties, including high- and low-temperature resistance, weathering resistance, chemical stability, and electrical isolation, as well as transparency. Unfortunately, the inherent flammability of SR largely restricts its practical application in many fields that have high standard requirements for flame retardancy. Throughout the last decade, a series of flame-retardant strategies have been adopted which enhance the flame retardancy of SR and even enhance its other key properties, such as mechanical properties and thermal stability. This comprehensive review systematically reviewed the recent research advances in flame-retarded SR materials and summarized and introduced the up-to-date design of different types of flame retardants and their effects on flame-retardant properties and other performances of SR. In addition, the related flame-retardant mechanisms of the as-prepared flame-retardant SR materials are analyzed and presented. Moreover, key challenges associated with these various types of FRs are discussed, and future development directions are also proposed.

Abstract:Owing to the unsustainability of traditional petroleum-based char-forming agents, cyclodextrin (CD) as the bio-based polyhydroxy compounds has been employed to construct the intumescent flame-retardant system with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) for flammable and fire-hazardous silicone rubber (SR). On the basis of this, the poor compatibility and water resistance of SR composites have been improved by separately introducing the bio-inspired hydrophobic structure for CD and APP. The results have implied that limiting oxygen index (LOI) and vertical combustion of SR composites with 40 phr total fillers loadings could reach 30.7% and UL-94 V-0 rating. Moreover, the water soaking tests have verified that the flame retardancy of SR composites could be maintained under hot aqueous medium. Based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the reason for elevated flame retardancy of SR composites can be interpreted by good thermal stability and char-forming ability via the interaction of modified APP and CD. With the aid of analyzing combustion residues in details, the synergistic flame-retardant mechanism can be mainly elaborated as the gas phase dilution of inert gases and the condensed phase barrier of dense expanded carbon layer. Furthermore, the retained mechanical properties of SR composites via hydrophobic modification are beneficial to improve its application value. Thus, this paper has open up a novel, green and effective route for overcoming the crucial flame retardancy problem of SR materials in real-life applications.

Abstract:Aimed at settling the bottleneck problems of low flame retardancy for silicone rubber (SR), a modified melamine polyphosphate (H-Ni@MPP) was successfully obtained by successively introducing Ni 2+ and silicon resin via a facile approach. Simultaneously, expandable graphite (EG) was further taken advantage of improving the flame-retardant ability. Surprisingly, the highest flame retardancy of SR/H-Ni@MPP/EG composites could be achieved with 49.5% LOI value and UL-94 V-0 rating when the loading was 40 phr. Moreover, flame retardancy after water treatment was dramatically maintained, revealing that the water resistance of SR composites was enhanced. The effect of H-Ni@MPP/EG ratio on the flame retardancy of SR was systematically investigated. Based on the analysis for remnants, the effective flame-retarding mechanism of SR composites can be ascribed to the physical–chemical intumescence, graphitized char layer and Ni-catalyzed process. Therefore, this strategy has provided an effective route for realizing the goal in flame-retarding SR composites.

Abstract:To retard the spread of fire in many cases with sealing materials is significant. A series of silicone rubber foam materials were prepared with room temperature vulcanization and foaming reactions. The morphology, chemical structure, cell structure, and thermal stability were investigated and results proved that the synthesis of silicone rubber was successful in a wide range of feed ratios. The fire-retardant tests were carried out to study the fire-proof property of the composite materials, and the excellent performance showed a promising prospect for wide application in sealing materials.

Abstract:To address the bottleneck problem for flame-retarding silicone rubber (SR) in poor water resistance and low efficiency, a halogen-free and synergistic system was fabricated by the introduction of hydrophobic melamine polyphosphate (MPP)-intercalated layered double hydroxide (P-MPP@LDH) and expandable graphite (EG) in this paper. Dramatically, the LOI of the composite (SR/P-MPP@LDH2.5/EG2.5) can reach as high as 36.4% with UL-94 V-0 rating when the total flame retardant loadings were only 5 phr, revealing the superior efficiency of the novel system. Compared with neat SR, the fire risk of SR composites is observably decreased given cone calorimeter tests. Significantly, bio-inspired hydrophobic modification is feasible for the excellent balance in simultaneously improving the flame retardancy, water resistance, and mechanical properties of SR in one system. Based on the residue and thermal degradation analysis, the effective flame retardant mechanism for SR composites can be attributed to the joint effect of LDH-catalyzed char-formation and physicochemical synergistic intumescence barrier. Therefore, this paper has provided a new and effective strategy to achieve the goal of flame retardancy with high performance in SR. And our work provides a new choice for designing and applying rubber composite materials in buildings.

Abstract:Most organic polymeric materials have high flammability, for which the large amounts of smoke, toxic gases, heat, and melt drips produced during their burning cause immeasurable damages to human life and property every year. Despite some desirable results having been achieved by conventional flame-retardant methods, their application is encountering more and more difficulties with the ever-increasing high flame-retardant requirements such as high flame-retardant efficiency, great persistence, low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gases, and more importantly not deteriorating or even enhancing the overall properties of polymers. Under such condition, some advanced flame-retardant methods have been developed in the past years based on "all-in-one" intumescence, nanotechnology, in situ reinforcement, intrinsic char formation, plasma treatment, biomimetic coatings, etc., which have provided potential solutions to the dilemma of conventional flame-retardant methods. This review briefly outlines the development, application, and problems of conventional flame-retardant methods, including bulk-additive, bulk-copolymerization, and surface treatment, and focuses on the raise, development, and potential application of advanced flame-retardant methods. The future development of flame-retardant methods is further discussed.

Abstract:Rubbers combine the flexibility with mechanical strength, supporting myriad applications, but suffer from inherent flammability. Formulation and production of flame-retardant rubber composites (FRRCs) have intensively been practiced over years, but not comprehensively reviewed. This necessity has outlined collecting, analyzing, screening, classifying, and interpreting the literature with the aim of classifying the FRRCs. We quantified and visualized the flame retardancy of natural and synthetic FRRCs by grouping FRRCs based on their flame retardants (FRs) among green, mineral, phosphorus-based, nitrogen-based, carbonaceous, and hybrids of two or more types. Available data on cone calorimetry, limited oxygen index (LOI), and UL-94 of FRRCs were carefully extracted and plotted. Flame Retardancy Index (FRI) was used to specify the Poor, Good, or Excellent classes of flame retardancy in association with the chemistry and concentration of FRs to broaden the future innovation avenues. Machine Learning (ML) modeling enabled visualization of flame retardancy landscapes of natural and synthetic rubbers in terms of the chemistry and concentration of FRs. Overall, a downward trend in mechanical properties of FRRCSs against FRs amount was oxplored. This study proposed a general guideline for recognizing gaps in previous investigations and mechanistic interpretations. In conclusion, we highlight that the future FRRCs should take advantage of hybridizing FRs in order to meet the fire safety requirements, which would be possible by the innovative colorful checkered flame retardancy chart presented in this survey.

Abstract:The catalytic flame retardant system has the characteristics of the low addition amount, high char formation efficiency, stable carbon structure at high temperature and so on. The research on flame retardant method and mechanism of the catalytic flame retardant system has become more and more important. In this paper, the status of research and development on catalytic flame-retardant polymer systems at home and abroad was reviewed. The applications research progress on metal oxides, carbon materials, metal salts, montmorillonite, molecular sieves and boron phosphors in catalytic flame-retardant polymer systems was introduced. The catalytic mechanism in the char-forming process of condensed phase was discussed. At last, it was pointed out that the development trend of catalytic flame retardant polymer materials is to develop new carbon materials represented by graphene and to achieve superfine and organic of catalytic flame retardant.

Abstract:The flame resistance of applied coating materials affects the safety of innovative technological solutions. Silicone-containing polymeric materials are one of the most economical solutions in the field of coatings due to the effect of the unique combination of very good thermal, resistance, and surface properties. The rich chemistry of silicon compounds, which results in their very good thermal stability, allows their use as flame-resistant coating materials or as flame retardants in polymer composites. In this review, the flame resistance of PDMS systems based on their thermal degradation data, as well as possible paths of thermal degradation depending on external conditions including the effect of additives, flame resistance of hybrid silicone-containing coating materials and most important innovative applications of these materials, are reviewed. Very good results from the use of organic silicon compounds as fire retardants in polymers obtained by many research teams are one of the promising ways of overcoming the health, safety, and availability concerns of traditional halogenated fire retardants.

Abstract:Inspired by the natural thermal charring capacity of lacquer tree bark, a novel halogen-free, bio-based and two-component synergistic flame retardant system has been constructed by introducing transition metal (Fe 3+ )-modified tannic acid (TA) as char source and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as acid source, which was employed for overcoming the severe flammability problem for silicone rubber (SR). By systematically investigating the effect of APP/TA@Fe system on the flame retardancy of SR composites, it has been found that when 40 mass% APP and TA@Fe in a ratio of 3:1 are added, the limited oxygen index (LOI) and vertical combustion tests of SR composites can reach 30% and UL-94 V-0 rating with a rapid self-extinguishing capacity. Through the comprehensive analysis of the residues of SR composites after complete burning, a gas/condensed flame retardant mechanism is primarily proposed in detail. Among these, the ammonia and water vapor released by the decomposition of APP and TA@Fe during combustion can dilute the combustible gases and tannic acid will act via the free radicals scavenging ability. Besides, the continuous, intumescent and dense charring residues from the thermal interaction between APP and TA will exert a prominent role in restricting the heat/mass exchange process and inhibiting the SR matrix from further flame attacking. Surprisingly, the mechanical strength of SR system is attained even if the combination of APP and TA@Fe is blended. Consequently, this article has developed a bionic, eco-friendly and effective approach to settle the flammability problem of SR and broaden their applications in the fields of construction and decoration materials.

Abstract:The progress of flame retarded polymer nanocomposites and coatings in China over the past decades are described in this review. Emphasis on flammability performance of polymer nanocomposites containing nanofillers, mainly layered inorganic compounds, nanofibers and nanoparticles, combined with conventional flame retardant additives are addressed based on the open literature. Polymeric coatings with improved flame retardancy prepared using a wide variety of additives and UV‐curing technology are also introduced. Derived from this research, the combination of multiple methods and technologies including catalyst and nanotechnology, is predicted to have a high probability to enhance char formation and improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials. Abstract:With the increasing emphasis on environmental protection, the development of flame retardants for epoxy resin (EP) has tended to be non-toxic, efficient, multifunctional and systematic. Currently reported flame retardants have been capable of providing flame retardancy, heat resistance and thermal stability to EP. However, many aspects still need to be further improved. This paper reviews the development of EPs in halogen-free flame retardants, focusing on phosphorus flame retardants, carbon-based materials, silicon flame retardants, inorganic nanofillers, and metal-containing compounds. These flame retardants can be used on their own or in combination to achieve the desired results. The effects of these flame retardants on the thermal stability and flame retardancy of EPs were discussed. Despite the great progress on flame retardants for EP in recent years, further improvement of EP is needed to obtain numerous eco-friendly high-performance materials.

Abstract:To solve the bottleneck problems of flame-retarding silicone rubber (SR), a halogen-free, phosphorus-free and synergistic flame retardant system was prepared by introducing hydrophobic natural product (Gum Arabic, GA) intercalated layered double hydroxide (H-GA@LDH) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). Prominently, when the total amount of flame retardant is only 7 phr, SR/H-GA@LDH6.0/MWCNT1.0 can reach the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 29.4% and UL-94 V-0 rating with the flame retardant index of 2.06. And the LOI value of SR/H-GA@LDH6.0/MWCNT1.0 is decreased by only 1.3% compared with that of SR by 6.9% after water resistance tests. In addition, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release rate (THR) of SR composites are decreased by 22.14% and 12.43%. Compared with pure SR, the tensile strength and elongation at break of SR-8 are increased by 115.63% and 23.85%. In this condition, an excellent balance for simultaneously improving flame retardancy, water resistance and mechanical properties has been achieved. Therefore, this paper has provided an effective strategy with halogen-free and phosphorus-free materials for achieving the goal of flame-retarding SR with high performance and breaking the limitation of traditional contaminative and toxic phosphorus-based or halogen-based flame retardants.

Abstract:Based on the requirements of fire-resistant performance of silicone rubber (SR) composites, ceramifiable flame-retarded SR composites were prepared in this work. Novel phosphorus/nitrogen/silicon-containing flame retardants were synthesized through the hydrolysis of 3-[2-(2-Aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyl-trimethoxysilane (P(ANTMS)) and the hydrolysis under phosphoric acid (P(ANTMS-PA)) and phosphorous acid (P(ANTMS-POA)). Ceramifiable SR composites were prepared by using glass powders as sintering aids, and kaolin and sericite as refractory fillers. The sintered residues of the ceramifiable SR composites after burning exhibited a certain strength. The flame retardants were added to the ceramifiable SR composites for improving the flame retardancy, which decreased the peak heat release rate (PHRR) and the total heat release (THR) of the SR composites. The SR composite filled with P(ANTMS-PA) had a low PHRR of 226 kW/m 2 , a low THR of 56 MJ/m 2 and good smoke suppression property. The sintered product of the SR composite filled with P(ANTMS-PA) exhibited the continuous and dense ceramic structure, which could effectively prevent heat transfer and oxygen. The ceramifiable flame-retarded SR composite exhibited excellent ceramifiable property and flame retardancy.

Abstract:Polymer composites are widely used in various fields of production and life, and the study of preparing environmentally friendly and flame retardant clay/polymer composites has gradually become a global research hotspot. But how to efficiently surface modify clay and apply it to the field of flame retardant polymers is still a potential challenge. One of the most commonly used surface modification methods is the modification of clay with silane coupling agents. The hydrolysable groups of the silane coupling agent first hydrolyze to generate hydroxyl groups. These hydroxyl groups then undergo a condensation reaction with the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the clay, allowing for organic functional groups to be grafted onto the clay surface. The organic functional groups and polymer matrix react to generate chemical bonds so that the composite material's interface is more closely combined. Thus, the dispersion of clay in the organic polymer material and the compatibility of the two is better, which improves the flame retardant effect of the composite material. This paper introduces the classification of a silane coupling agent and the mechanism and process of silane coupling agent-modified clay, outlines the mechanism of silane coupling agent-modified clay flame retardant polymers, reviews the research results on flame retardant polymers of various clays after surface treatment with silane coupling agents in recent years, and highlights the synergistic flame retardant effect of clay and flame retardant organized by silane coupling agents. Finally, it is found that the current research in the field of silane coupling agent-modified clay in flame retardants is focused on the modification of montmorillonite, sepiolite, attapulgite, and kaolinite by KH-550, KH-560, and KH-570, and the development trends in this field are also prospected.

Abstract:In this research, a series of silicone foam/polytitanosiloxane composites (SF-pTS) were fabricated with hydroxy-, vinyl-, hydrogen-containing polydimethylsiloxanes, and polytitanosiloxane filler in the presence of a platinum catalyst under ambient conditions. The effect of the amount of polytitasiloxane on the micromorphology and flame retardancy of silicone foam was studied, and a relative flame retardancy mechanism was proposed. It could be found that the polytitanosiloxane exhibited a good dispersion level in the silicone foam, thus improving the flame retardancy of the composite. When the content of polytitanosiloxane is 9 wt%, the limiting oxygen index and UL-94 grade of the SF-pTS9 composite are increased to 29.2% and FV-0, respectively. Cone experiment results suggested that the SF-pTS9 possessed relative balanced PHRR (148.9 kW/m 2 ), THR (58.5 MJ/m 2 ), TSP (0.6 m 2 ), and mass residue (83.9%) among the prepared silicone foam materials. This work provides a new avenue to fabricate a silicone foam composite with enhanced flame retardancy.
