Abstract:A star shaped flame retardant containing Si/P/B/N multicomponents (SiFAD) was prepared and used to regulate the performance of epoxy. The SiFAD modify the flame retardancy, toughness and transparency of epoxy (EP). The EP composites containing 6wt SiFAD achieve the UL-94 V0 and a limiting oxygen index (LOI) 34.7. The SiFAD promotes the early degradation of EP and increases the amount of char formed at high temperature, and improves the flame retardancy through the combined actions of gas phase and condensed phase. Moreover, the tensile and impact strength of EP are both improved, especially the impact strength of EP-4SiFAD is 15.8 kJ/m2, which is 139% more than that of EP. The SiFAD participates in the curing reactions of EP, construct high free volume through bridge effect, thus improving the impact strength of EP. In addition, microphase separation is produced in EP composites which is so small that the EP composites have good transparency.

Abstract:Silica gel-coated hydrotalcite (LDHs) flame retardants (SiLDHs-Ce) are prepared by the sol-gel method. The synergistic effect of SiLDHs-Ce and expandable graphite (EG) on the silicone rubber foam (SRF) is studied through limiting oxygen index (LOI), Cone Calorimeter Test (CC), thermogravimetric infrared spectrometer (TG-IR), and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that SiLDHs-Ce and EG can improve the flame retardant properties of the SRF materials. The LOI value of the SRF material can reach 40.1% when the ratio of EG to SiLDHs-Ce is 2:1, and the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) are reduced by 66.60% and 52.76%, respectively, compared with the original. The minimum SPR of the SRF material is 0.010 m(2) s(-1) when 1 wt% SiLDHs-Ce has been added. TG-IR results show that the addition of EG and SiLDHs-Ce increased the carbon residue rate of SRF materials. Results show that the residual carbon-containing EG and SiLDHs-Ce is denser. It is inferred that the synergistic flame retardant mechanism of SiLDHs-Ce and EG on the SRF is mainly condensed phase flame retardant, augmented by gas-phase flame retardant. The results of this study can provide guidance for the development of environmentally friendly silicone rubber foam.

Abstract:Novel non-toxic halogen-free flame retardants are replacing traditional flame retardants in polymer and polymer matrix composite structures. In this study, graphene nanosheet (GNS) is investigated in combination with traditional layered double hydroxide (LDH), layered rare-earth hydroxide (LRH), and phosphorus-based flame retardant (DOPO) to enhance the flame retardancy of epoxy resin. A synergistic flame retardancy effect is achieved in GNS/LDH and GNS/DOPO systems where combined GNS and LDH increased the viscosity of the epoxy melt, and limited the flame propagation through inhibition of dripping. The limiting oxygen index of epoxy increased from 15.9 to 23.6 with addition of 0.5wt.% each of GNS and LDH. With the addition of 2.5wt.% of both GNS and LDH, the total heat release of epoxy resin also reduced from 33.4MJ/m2 to 24.6MJ/m2. The synergistic effect of GNS and DOPO adopted a different mechanism. The addition of 2.5wt.% of GNS and DOPO reduced the peak heat release rate from 1194kW/m2 to 396kW/m2, and the total heat release rate from 72.5MJ/m2 to 48.1MJ/m2. The synergistic mechanisms of the flame retardants were closely analyzed and correlated with the flame retardant properties.

Abstract:Two kinds of Al‐based metal‐organic frameworks (Al‐MOFs), MIL‐53(Al), and MIL‐96(Al), were synthesized by the solvothermal method and then characterized using SEM, XRD, and FTIR. The Al‐MOFs and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were blended and added to silicone rubber foams (SiFs). The mechanical properties and flame retardancy of the composites were tested and analyzed using universal tensile tester, limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical combustion tester, cone calorimeter, TG, SEM, EDS, and FTIR. The results show that Al‐MOFs synthesized by the solvothermal method have high crystallinity and purity. Compared with pure SiFs, the LOI of SiFs with 2 wt% MIL‐53(Al) and 2 wt% HNTs increased to 29.4%, while total heat release and total smoke release decreased by 36.9% and 32.4%. The flame retardant mechanism of the composites is mainly reflected in the condensed phase. MIL‐53(Al) and HNTs can synergistically promote the formation of a dense carbon layer, blocking heat and oxygen from entering the SiFs matrix.

Abstract:To study the effects of modified halloysite nanotubes (m-HNTs) on the flame retardancy and mechanical property for silicone rubber,the halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) modified with ethenyl trimethoxysilane (A-171) were selected to incorporate in silicone rubber together with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to prepare flame retardant silicone rubber (FRSR) composite by mechanical blending process.The m-HNTs were characterized by FT-IR and TG.The flame retardancy,mechanical properties,morphology of residue and thermal degradation behaviors were investigated by SEM,limiting oxygen index (LOI),vertical burning test (UL-94),cone calorimetry,energy disperse spectroscopy(EDS) and TG.The results show that a substitution of a certain fraction of APP with m-HNTs can significantly improve the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of FRSR.When the content of m-HNTs is 3 phr,the tensile strength is 8.7 MPa,LOI value is 31.4％ and the UL-94 rating is V-0.Moreover,the residues are stable and compact,the heat release rate (HRR) is reduced by 36 ％.

Abstract:The use of some types of expandable graphite (EG) as an intumescent flame-retardant additive in polyolefins was studied using the cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the limiting oxygen index (LOI), and the-UL 94 test and through measurement of EG's mechanical and electrical properties. The present study has shown that some suitable EG systems combined with other organic and inorganic halogen-free flame-retardant (HFFR) additives apparently can improve the flame-retardant capacity with good mechanical properties of polyolefin blends. For linear low-density polyethylene and/or ethylene vinyl acetate/EG/HFFR blends the limiting oxygen index can reach a rating above 29, and the UL-94 test can produce a value of V-0. The CCT and TGA data show that the EG and EG/HFFR additives not only promoted the formation of carbonaceous char but also greatly decreased the heat release rate and the effective heat of combustion and increased the residues after burning. The synergistic effect of EG with other HFFR additives, such as zinc berate, the phosphorus-nitrogen compound NP28, and microcapsulated red phosphorus is examined and discussed in detail in this article. Abstract:The synergistic effects of expandable graphite (EG) with some halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) additives in the polyolefin (PO) blends have been studied by cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermal analysis (TGA and DTA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and mechanical properties measurements etc. The results in this work show that EG combined with some HFFR additives, such as ammonium polyphosphate, zincborate, phosphorus-nitrogen containing compound NP28, and microcapsulated red phosphorus, can apparently increase the LOI values and improve the flammability properties of PO blends. The data obtained from the CCT indicate that the heat release rate (HRR) and effective heat of combustion (EHC) decrease and the residues of carbonaceous chars increase remarkably with addition of EG and/or the other HFFR additives. The TGA and DTA data give the positive evidence that the decreases of HRR and EHC values of the retarded PO materials are due to the increase of oxidative degradation temperature and the decrease of oxidization heat. By optimizing the formulation system and using ethylene vinylacetate copolymer as a compatilizer, the PO/EG/HFFR blends with good flame-retardant and mechanical properties have been obtained in this study.

Abstract:In this study, a nitrogen-phosphorus intumescent flame-retardant 3-(N-diphenyl phosphate) amino propyl triethoxy silane (DPES), the ionic liquid (IL) of 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazole phosphate, and a phosphorous-containing ionic liquid-modified expandable graphite (IL-EG), were synthesized, and their molecular structures were characterized. The flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs) were compounded with synergistic flame-retardant IL-EG/DPES to study the effects of the combination IL-EG and DPES on the pore structure, mechanical properties, thermal decomposition behavior and thermal decomposition mechanism of RPUF. The results showed that IL-EG/DPES had good thermal stability, and an excellent expansibility and char yield. The flame-retardant RPUF, modified with IL-EG and DPES at the ratio of 1:1, had a relatively uniform pore size, the highest compressive strength, and an excellent flame-retardant performance due to the form interwoven hydrogen bonds between IL-EG and DPES, as well as the new synergistic flame-retardant coating on the RPUF surface to restrict the transfer of gas or heat into the PU matrix.

Abstract:In this paper, rigid polyurethane foams that were filled with expandable graphite (RPUF/EG) composites were prepared by the liquid blending method, and then the structure and flame retardancy performance of materials were investigated through optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, limit oxygen index, cone calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis coupled to fourier transform infrared spectrum, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that a large number of EG could be good to the exhibition of flame retardancy of RPUF, where the optimal material was found at loading 15 phr EG that showed an increased limit oxygen index value and a decreased calorific or fuming value. TGA coupled FTIR and XPS revealed that EG could disassembled before RPUF under heating treatment, and it could form a pyknotic and enahnced residual carbon layer on RPUF surface after the fire, which restricted the transfer of gas, like oxygen or heat into PU matrix, finally resulting in the promotion of flame retardancy of RPUF.

Abstract:The flame retardancy of polymers is an important issue in their practical applications. The use of various nanofillers as flame retardants in polymer matrices have drawn considerable attention. In this chapter, the flame retardancy of naturally occurring halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) towards polymer is first demonstrated and the underlying role of HNTs during combustion is highlighted. Then the factors related to the dispersion of HNTs, modification of HNTs, and structure of the nanocomposites that affect the flame retardancy properties of the polymer–HNTs nanocomposites are discussed. After that, the synergistic effects of the combination of HNTs with other flame retardant compounds (intumescent flame retardant system and other nanofillers) in improving the fire retardancy properties of the nanocomposites are reviewed. Finally, the flame retardancy of other clays (montmorillonite, vermiculite, sepiolite, kaolinite) in polymers and the comparison between HNTs and other clays are briefly illustrated.
Enhancing cellular structure, mechanical properties, thermal stability and flame retardation of EVA/NR blend nanocomposite foams by silicon dioxide-based flame retardant

Abstract:Flame retardant rubber foams of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)/natural rubber (NR)/layered silicate blends filled with silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) were prepared by using azodicarbonamide (ADC) as a blowing agent. Specifically, SiO 2 was added in EVA/NR blend nanocomposites to produce good flame retardant foams. The properties of EVA/NR blend nanocomposite foams with different SiO 2 loading (0, 20, 30, 40 parts per hundred rubber, phr) were investigated through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), rheological property test, mechanical property measurement, flammability tests, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Pyrolysis-GC-MS). Compared with the simple EVA/NR blend nanocomposite, the added SiO 2 increased the blend compatibility between EVA and NR phases and melt strength/viscosity of the EVA/NR blend nanocomposites, thus promoting cellular structure of the EVA/NR nanocomposite foams. Increasing SiO 2 loading resulted in higher cell density, smaller cell size, and lower volume of void. These improvements caused higher strength and elastomeric recovery. The LOI test results showed that flame retardancy of the EVA/NR blend nanocomposite foams increased at higher SiO 2 loading as a result of formation of insulation silicon dioxide-based char. TGA and pyrolysis-GC-MS analyses also validated the finding that the silicon dioxide-based char in the foamed samples containing higher SiO 2 loading was more effective on improving thermal stability, which was responsible for lower material combustibility and better flame retardancy. Based on our finding, it was concluded that a good flame retardant EVA/NR blend nanocomposite foam with the best improvement in strength and elastomeric recovery was achieved when combined with 40 phr SiO 2 .

Abstract:In this work, different kinds of silane coupling agents modified expanded graphite (MEG) fillers were successfully prepared and then incorporated into silicon rubber matrix to fabricate flame‐retardant composite materials (SR/MEG). The inserted MEG fillers with siloxane chains exhibited good compatibility with the silicon rubber matrix, which cannot only reduce the negative impact of adding fillers on mechanical properties but also endow the silicon rubber composites with ideal flame retardancy. Subsequently, platinum (Pt) catalyst was incorporated into the SR/MEG composites to prepare SR/MEG/Pt composites, and the synergistic effects of MEG and Pt catalyst on the thermal stability, flame retardancy, and combustion behavior of silicon rubber composites were systematically investigated. The target SR/MEG/Pt composite with appropriate addition of MEG and Pt catalyst can obtain relatively high char residue of 41.9% and limiting oxygen index value of 29.6%, as well as achieve V‐0 rating in the vertical combustion test, owing to the formation of expanded and dense silicon–carbon protective layer under the catalysis of Pt catalyst. Moreover, the cone calorimeter test results showed that the peak of heat release rate and total heat release of SR/MEG composites were further reduced after the addition of an appropriate amount of Pt catalyst, manifesting the good synergistic effect of MEG and Pt catalyst on the flame retardancy performance of silicon rubber. The method proposed herein may provide a promising way for fabricating high‐performance flame‐retardant silicone rubber materials.

Abstract:In this research, a series of silicone foam/polytitanosiloxane composites (SF-pTS) were fabricated with hydroxy-, vinyl-, hydrogen-containing polydimethylsiloxanes, and polytitanosiloxane filler in the presence of a platinum catalyst under ambient conditions. The effect of the amount of polytitasiloxane on the micromorphology and flame retardancy of silicone foam was studied, and a relative flame retardancy mechanism was proposed. It could be found that the polytitanosiloxane exhibited a good dispersion level in the silicone foam, thus improving the flame retardancy of the composite. When the content of polytitanosiloxane is 9 wt%, the limiting oxygen index and UL-94 grade of the SF-pTS9 composite are increased to 29.2% and FV-0, respectively. Cone experiment results suggested that the SF-pTS9 possessed relative balanced PHRR (148.9 kW/m 2 ), THR (58.5 MJ/m 2 ), TSP (0.6 m 2 ), and mass residue (83.9%) among the prepared silicone foam materials. This work provides a new avenue to fabricate a silicone foam composite with enhanced flame retardancy.

Abstract:Silicone foams (SiFs) are high-performance materials but can combust and release choking smoke in a fire. In this paper, the modified microencapsulated Mg/Zn/Al-layered double hydroxide (MLDHs) was prepared by the sol–gel method. Then, the structure and performance of modified MLDHs were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Besides, the mechanical properties, flame retardancy, smoke suppression, thermal degradation behavior, morphology and composition of carbon slag of SiFs with modified MLDHs were tested using the universal tensile testing machine, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 test, cone calorimeter, thermogravimetry, SEM–EDS and XPS. The results indicated that the modified MLDHs could effectively improve the ductility of SiFs. When the addition of modified MLDHs exceeded 20 mass%, SiFs could be improved to UL-94-V0 rating. The PHRR, THR, and TSP of SiFs with 30 mass% modified MLDHs were 56.04%, 46.86%, and 80.49% lower than that of pure SiFs. Furthermore, the decomposition products of modified MLDHs/SiFs composite such as SiO 2 and zinc magnesium aluminum oxide could improve the char formation significantly. The continuous, complete, and dense structure of carbon slag of modified MLDHs/SiFs could effectively block the exchange of heat and gas on the surface of SiFs and reduce the combustion performance of SiFs.

Abstract:Expandable graphite (EG) was encapsulated by a poly-siloxane (Si@EG) and introduced into polypropylene (PP) composite as flame retardant additives. Compared with that of PP/EG composite, PP/Si@EG composite achieved the V-0 rating with a loading of 25 wt.%. Additionally, the total heat release of PP/Si@EG composite was decreased by 42% compared with that of control PP in the cone calorimeter test. To investigate the burning behavior of PP/Si@EG, a burning rate measurement was designed and finite element analysis was introduced to evaluate influences brought by char volume and shape formed by EG. The temperature field was calculated among EG and Si@EG expanding in the PP matrix. Additionally, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope observation were operated to investigate the char residues. It was proposed that the outstanding flame retardancy brought by Si@EG was owing to the compact and dense char.

Abstract:The fire retardancy and flame-retardant mechanism of expandable graphite (EG), organic montmorillonite (OMMT), and magnesium hydrate (MH) in ethylene-propylene-diene monomer/chloroprene rubber (EPDM/CR) foams were investigated. The results indicated that the combination of EG and OMMT remarkably improved the fire-retardant property compared to the control samples, and better fireproof performance was achieved when MH was used as the third coretardant unit. The structure of the obtained EPDM/CR/OMMT composites was characterized by X-ray diffraction, and the results showed that the composites had an intercalated nanostructure. The limiting oxygen index, vertical burning test, and cone calorimeter test results showed that the LOI values and UL-94 rating increased while the second peak of the heat release rates (HRR) decreased within the EG/OMMT system. In particular, the second pHRR disappeared when the EG/OMMT/MH system was used as a flame retardant. Moreover, the results of thermogravimetric analysis showed that the combination of EG and OMMT reduced the thermal-degradation rates and mass-loss percentages. Furthermore, observation by scanning electron microscopy revealed that EG and OMMT left over after combustion formed a complete, compact, and rigid charred layer with a mosaic structure of expanded graphite embedded in cortical-honeycomb layers of OMMT. The adding amount of EG/FR1 compound is 8 wt % as well, and different ratios (8:1 and 12:1) of EG to FR1 were designed. Detailed characterizations of the density, cellular structure, and thermal conductivity of RPUF were carried out. An increase in thermal conductivity was observed as the FR1 content increased. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that EG and FR1 accelerated the degradation of the foam but increased the char residue. The results from the fire tests showed that RPU3 improved the fire resistance of the RPUF on a higher grade than RPU1. In detail, RPU3 increased the limited oxygen index (LOI) value from 19.2% to 29.8% and reached V-0 rating on the vertical burning test. Results from the cone calorimeter test showed that the RPU3 effectively reduced peak of heat released rate (pHRR) in comparison to PU and RPU1 reference samples. A combined synergistic flame-retardant mechanism by the barrier effect of EG in condense phase and radical capture mechanism of FR1 in gas phase was proposed. Moreover, the compression performance of the foams increased by the combined addition of EG and FR1 at the same 12:1 ratio in the RPUF. A good interfacial adhesion between FR1 and PU matrix besides an increasing density of the foam, could be the responsible for this result.</p>

Abstract:The flame-retardant micro-encapsulated sepiolite (MSEP) was successfully prepared by sol-gel method. Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy were utilized to prove that sepiolite was encapsulated. Then, the mechanical properties, flame retardance, smoke suppression, and pyrolysis characteristics of silicone rubber foam (SiFs) with MSEP and zinc borate (ZB) were analyzed. The results indicated that the tensile and compressive properties of SiFs could evidently improve with the incorporation of MSEP/ZB. SiFs with 3 wt% MSEP and 6 wt% ZB could achieve an limiting oxygen index value of 30.9 vol% and UL-94 V-0 rating, the time to ignition was 64.7% above that of pure SiFs, the peak heat release rate and total heat release were 42.7% and 25.0% lower than that of pure SiFs, respectively. Furthermore, the peak smoke production rate and total smoke production of SiFs with 3 wt% MSEP and 6 wt% ZB were merely 54.22% and 64.10% of pure SiFs. Especially, the thermal stability of SiFs was significantly enhanced, and the carbon residue of SiFs became denser and more complete after adding 3 wt% MSEP and 6 wt% ZB.

Abstract:As one of the most used polyurethane, flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) still confronted highly flammable problems. However, current flame retardant employed in FPUF deteriorated the other utilization performances, such as mechanical properties. In this work, cerium stannate decorated graphene nanosheets (GNS@Ce2Sn2O7, GCSO) was prepared to fabricate flame retardant FPUF composites. Compared to pure FPUF, the tensile strength and average compression strength of FPUF composites accomplished 100 and 412% increase, respectively, while the average rebound was basically maintained. In contrast to pure FPUF, total heat release and total smoke production of FPUF composites displayed a 42.2 and 75.1% reduction, respectively. Furthermore, the released toxic gases (such as, CO2, CO and NOx) during combustion were greatly decreased. These results were due to the catalytic and barrier effect of GCSO promoting the formation a high-quality char residue with a compact, intact and dense morphology. Therefore, it provides a facile method to fabricate FPUF composites with advanced comprehensive performance for the furniture field.

Abstract:Researchers have widely focused on the high flammability and releasing toxic gases of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) under fire attack. In this work, the hybrid expandable graphite (EG) intumescent flame retardant is designed and fabricated for the fire safety of RPUF. Hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) is self-assembled on the surface and interlamination of EG (HCCP@EG) via water bath method and incorporated into RPUF matrix to improve the flame retardant efficiency of EG and the interfacial adhesion between EG particles and RPUF matrix. The structural morphological characterization indicates that HCCP@EG is successfully synthesized. HCCP@EG also exhibits good thermal stability and high char residues. Compared with neat RPUF, RPUF composites with 15% HCCP@EG show excellent flame-retardant properties and achieve a UL-94 V-0 level and a limiting index higher than 27.0%, which is due to the construction of a network structure of HCCP in the graphite lamellas and its synergistic and barrier effect. In addition, compared with EG, the presence of HCCP enhances interface compatibility between EG and RPUF, resulting in improving the mechanical property of RPUF composites. In summary, this work provides a facile approach to manufacturing high-performance RPUF products with outstanding fire safety.
