Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effects of different surface treatments on the shear bond strength between zirconia and resin cement. METHODS:Forty zirconia discs were randomly divided into four groups (10 discs in each group) for different surface treatments: control, no surface treatment; sandblast, applied air abrasion with aluminum oxide particles; ultraviolet (UV), the zirconia sample was placed in the UV sterilizer at the bottom of the UV lamp at 10 mm, and irradiated for 48 h; cold plasma, the discs were put in the cold plasma cabinet with the cold plasma generated from the gas of He for 30 s. Specimens of all the groups were surface treated prior to cementation with Panavia F 2.0 cement. The surface morphology and contact angle of water were measured. The shear bond strengths were tested and the failure modes were examined with a stereomicroscope. RESULTS:Surface morphology showed no difference between the UV/cold plasma group and the control group. Sandblasted zirconia displayed an overall heterogeneous distribution of micropores. The contact angle of the control group was 64.1°±2.0°. After sandblasting, UV irradiation and cold plasma exposure, the values significantly decreased to 48.8°±2.6°, 27.1°±3.6° and 32.0°±3.3°. The values of shear bond strength of the specimens with sandblasted (14.82±2.01) MPa were higher than those with no treatment (9.41±1.07) MPa with statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The values of shear bond strength of the specimens with UV irradiation (10.02±0.64) MPa were higher than those with no treatment (9.41±1.07) MPa, but without statistically significant difference (P>0.05). The values of cold plasma group (18.34±3.05) MPa were significantly higher than those of control group (9.41±1.07) MPa, even more than those with sandblast(14.82±2.01) MPa (P<0.05). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed increase in oxygen (O) and decrease in carbon (C) elements after UV and cold plasma treatment. The surface C/O ratio also decreased after UV and cold plasma treatment. CONCLUSION:Zirconia specimens treated with UV and cold plasma could significantly improve the hydrophilicity. The surface morphology was unaffected by the UV irradiation and cold plasma treatments. The improvements of ziconia shear bond strength were slight in UV group without statistically significant difference. Cold plasma treatment significantly improved the shear bond strength between zirconia and resin cement.
The Effect of Nano-Silica Surface Infiltration on Bond Strength of a Phosphate-Monomer-containing Composite Cement to Zirconia.

Abstract:PURPOSETo evaluate the bonding receptiveness of zirconia treated with nano-silica surface infiltration and the bond strength of composite cement after aging.MATERIALS AND METHODSZirconia ceramic green bodies (Ceramill zolid, Amann Girbach) with dimensions of 10 x 10 x 4 mm were divided into three groups (n = 4): group C (control: no treatment after sintering), group S (sandblasted: 50-μm alumina airborne particle abrasion after sintering) and group N (nanosintered: infiltrated with nano-silica colloid, sintered, and then etched with hydrofluoric acid). Phase transformations were examined through X-ray diffraction (XRD). Composite resin (Filtek Z250, 3M Oral Care) was bonded to zirconia using the 10-MDP-containing composite cement Panavia F (Kuraray Noritake). The composite-cement/zirconia bond strength was immediately measured using the microtensile bond strength test (µTBS) as well as after three months of artificial aging in water (n = 20 microstick specimens/group). Failure mode patterns were examined using SEM.RESULTSThe specimens of groups C and S, as tested by XRD, exhibited almost full tetragonal phases, while a small extent of tetragonal-monoclinic phase transformation (t→m) was observed for group N. Group N achieved the highest bond strengths (41.5 ± 8.6 MPa), which was significantly higher than that measured for groups C and S (p < 0.05). There was a significant drop in µTBS after 90 days of water storage for groups C and S. SEM revealed a decrease in the percentage of cohesive failure in groups N and S after water storage.CONCLUSIONSInfiltrating zirconia with nano-silica is a reliable method to establish a strong and stable bond to zirconia. The combination of surface infiltration with nano-silica and application of a phosphate monomer-containing composite cement can significantly improve the composite-cement/zirconia bond strength.

Abstract:Background: To explore the effect of adhesive surface with porcelain sintering and different silane coupling agents on adhesive properties of zirconia ceramics.Methods: Zirconia blocks (n=72) were randomly divided into two large groups (n=36) according to whether the adhesive surface was treated with sintered porcelain: N (no porcelain sintering), P (porcelain sintering). Then, according to different silane coupling agents, each group was randomly divided into three small groups, six small groups in total (n=12): NN (no porcelain sintering and agent), NM (no porcelain sintering + Monobond-S), NC (no porcelain sintering + Clearfil Repair); PN (porcelain sintering + no agent), PM (porcelain sintering + Monobond-S), PC (porcelain sintering + Clearfil Repair). After surface treatment, RelyX Unicem Cement was used to make ceramic-resin bonding specimens. Then, each of the six small groups was randomly divided into two subgroups; shear bond strength (SBS) was tested and bond failure mode was analyzed before and after thermal cycling 5,000 times.Results: (I) SBS analysis: the SBS values of the P groups were significantly higher than those of the N groups (P<0.05). The groups treated with silane coupling agents showed higher SBS values than the control group (P<0.05), and the PC groups showed the highest SBS values (P<0.05). The SBS of each group was significantly decreased after thermal cycling (P<0.05). (II) The microcharacteristics under scanning electron microscopy and energy spectrum analysis: the ceramic blocks being treated by porcelain sintering showed more roughness than the control group. A large amount of silicon (Si) appeared on the surface of the ceramic blocks after porcelain sintering.Conclusions: (I) Treating the adhesive surface by porcelain sintering can improve the bonding strength between zirconia and RelyX Unicem Cement, and the effect was better in conjunction with silane coupling agent. (II) The two kinds of silane coupling agent (Monobond-S, Clearfil Repair) can improve the bonding strength between zirconia and resin cement. The effect of Clearfil Repair is better than that of Monobond-S. (III) Thermal cycling had a significant adverse effect on SBS between zirconia and RelyX Unicem Cement. Clearfil Repair is helpful in improving the durability of zirconia bonding strength.

Abstract:Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the resin bond strength and durability of bonding between zirconia and resin with a new surface treatment technique,fusing glass ceramic ( FGC ),on zirconia.Methods Sixty zirconia discs were equally divided into three groups and the surfaces were treated separately by the following methods,sandblasted by 50 μm aluminum oxide particle ( Sb),fused with one layer of glass ceramic (Fu),sandblasted by 50 μm aluminum oxide particle and then fused with one layer of glass ceramic (Sb-Fu).Twenty cast ceramic discs were used as control group.All the discs were cemented to surface of cured core-resin using resin luting cement Super bond C&B.Half of the discs in each group were performed thermal cycling ( 10 000 cycles between 5 and 55 ℃ ) test.Then shear bond strength test (SBS) were performed in each group.The surface morphology of all the groups before and after surface treatment was examined using scanning electron microscopy.Results The mean (SD) bond strength of Sb,Fu,Sb-Fu,and ceramic control groups were 24.76 ± 2.80,29.08 ± 5.80,28.67 ± 7.20,and 31.30 ±2.90 MPa.The value of Sb group was lower than other three groups significantly before thermal cycling test.The values of Fu and Sb-Fu groups had no significant differences with the group of ceramic control.The SBS values of each groups were 24.45 ± 3.90,28.50 ± 3.70,25.41 ± 2.00,and 32.19 ±3.90 MPa respectively after thermal cycling test,there were no significantly drop of SBS value in each groups.The failure mode after SBS test was primarily cohesive and mix failure in Sb-Fu and Fu groups.Conclusions For the limitation of this study and under the testing conditions,FGC treatment has possibility to enhance the resin bond strength and durability of zirconia/resin bonding.
Effect of Simultaneous Sintering of Bioglass to a Zirconia Core on Properties and Bond Strength

Abstract:This study aimed to assess bioglass sintering to a zirconia core on surface properties and bonding strength to resin cement. Zirconia specimens were divided into four groups: G I: sintered; G II: bioglass modified zirconia (a bioglass slurry was sintered with zirconia at 1550 °C); G III: sandblasted using 50 μm Al2O3 particles; and G IV: Z-prime plus application. Surface morphology and chemical analysis were studied using a scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Surface roughness was evaluated using a profilometer. Surface hardness was measured using an indentation tester. For the microshear bond strength test, resin cement cylinders were bonded to a zirconia surface. Half of the specimens were tested after 24 h; the other half were thermocycled (5-55 °C) for 1000 cycles. A shearing load was applied at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min on a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed with ANOVA using SPSS software at (p < 0.05). Results: tThe mean surface roughness of G II was significantly higher than G I and G III. The microhardness of G II was significantly lower than all groups. For bond strength, there was no significant difference between groups II, III, and IV after thermocycling. Conclusions: Bioactive glass can increase the bond strength of zirconia to resin cement, and is comparable to sandblasting and Z-prime bonding agents.
Effect of laser and coating surface treatment on the bond strength of zirconia ceramics

Abstract:Objectives: This study aims to investigate bond strength between zirconia and resin cement through surface treatments with Er: YAG laser, Nd: YAG laser, and Si-Zr coating. Methods: Seventy-five round pre-sintered zirconia discs with a diameter of 18 mm and a thickness of 1.5 mm were prepared by a powder compactor. Fifty discs were randomly divided into five groups of 10 discs each and were subjected to five surface treatments: no treatment (control group), sandblasting with alumina particles (sandblasting group), Er: YAG laser treatment (Er: YAG laser group), Nd:YAG laser treatment (Nd: YAG laser group), and Si-Zr coating treatment (Si-Zr coating group). The discs were then bonded to composite resin columns with resin cement. The shear bond strength of each group was tested with a universal tester. Roughness tester, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy were used to analyze surface performance. Results: The bond strength of the Si-Zr coating group was higher than that of the remaining groups (P<0.05). The difference in bond strength between the sandblasting group and the Er: YAG laser group was not statistically significant (P>0.05), but both of them had higher bond strength than the Nd: YAG laser group (P<0.05). The Si-Zr coating group had the highest surface roughness (P<0.05). The surface roughness of the sandblasting, Er: YAG laser, and Nd: YAG laser groups was higher than that of the control group (P<0.05), but the difference among the three groups was not statistically significant (P>0.05). SEM observations showed irregular scratches on the surface of the sandblasting group and large pits with holes on the surface of the Er: YAG and Nd: YAG laser groups. In the Er: YAG laser group, the crystal structure was replaced by a smooth surface with a large amount of microcracks due to partial melting. Complex porous structures that comprised "island-like" structures and mass pores among the grains were observed on the surface of the Si-Zr coating. Only Zr, O, and Y were detected on the surfaces of the control, Er: YAG laser, and Nd: YAG laser groups. Al was found on the surface of the sandblasted group, and a higher proportion of Si was detected on the surface of the Si-Zr coating group. Conclusions: Er: YAG laser and Nd: YAG laser treatment on the zirconia ceramic surface could increase roughness and improve the bond strength to resin cement. Si-Zr coating treatment is an effective alternative for increasing the roughness and bond strength of zirconia surface and is superior to sandblasting and laser treatments.
The effect of surface conditioning techniques on the shear bond strength of zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic following adhesive cementation - An in vitro study

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of different surface conditioning techniques on the bond strength between zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) ceramics and resin cement. Materials and methods: Fifty samples of ZLS ceramic were used and allotted into five groups with 10 samples per group based on the type of surface conditioning technique. The ceramic specimens were crystallized and embedded into acrylic resin. The five groups were group 1 (negative control-without surface treatment); group 2 (10% hydrofluoric [HF] acid + silanization); group 3 (10% HF acid only); group 4 (self-etching ceramic primer [SECP]); and group 5 (experimental laboratory sealing of the conditioned surface). Resin cylinders were bonded using self-adhesive resin cement and were subjected to thermocycling after 24 h storage. The shear bond strength was tested with a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis used: One-way ANOVA was used for comparing five groups (P < 0.05 was considered significant). Results: Group 4 showed the highest mean bond strength value (23.4 MPa ± 2.21 MPa). A statistically significant difference was noted between group 4 and all the other groups tested in the study (P < 0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that the SECP can be considered an alternative to the conventional protocol of HF acid and silane application for the surface conditioning of ZLS ceramic.
Influence of Surface Treatments on the Shear Bond Strength of Repaired Composite Resin to Zirconia-based All-ceramic

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the bond strength between composite resin and zirconia core material.Methods:Sixty yttrium-stabilized tetragonal zirconium polycrystal(Y-TZP) blocks were fabricated and randomly assigned to six groups.Then five surface treatments were performed:acid etching with 8% hydrofluoric acid(H);airborne-particle abrasion(A);silica coating(S);H+S;A+S;no treatment(N) as a control group.Composite resin were bonded onto the Y-TZP rectanglars.After 24 hours at 37℃ distilled water storage,all Y-TZP/resin specimens were subjected to a shear load until fracture occurred.Scanning electron microscope(SEM) was used to inspect the surface characterization of different trentments.Result:The mean values in MPa±SD of shear bond strength test for group A(33.45±3.46)and AS(36.95±2.93)were statistically higher than other groups(P<0.01).No significant differences were detected in N,H,S and HS groups.And no statistically significance existed between silica coating groups and no-silica coating groups under the same treatment.SEM showed that acid etching with 8% hydrofluoric acid has no effect on Y-TZP surface structure but the Y-TZP surface could be modified significantly by airborne-particle abrasion.Conclusion:Airborne-particle abrasion was the most effective surface treatment in terms of bond strength increase;Acid etching with 8% hydrofluoric acid and silica coating had a poor influence on the bond strength between Y-TZP and repaired composite resin.
Selective Infiltrated Etching to Surface Treat Zirconia Using a Modified Glass Agent.

Abstract:PURPOSE The surface roughness of zirconia specimens and the bond strength of zirconia and resin cements were evaluated after selective infiltrated etching (SIE) surface treatment using a modified glass agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred twenty zirconia specimens were divided into four groups according to surface treatment method: untreated control (C), airborne particle abrasion (A), airborne particle abrasion followed by SIE treatment using a modified glass agent (A-SIE), and SIE treatment using a modified glass agent without airborne particle abrasion (SIE). The surface morphology and roughness of the specimens were examined before and after treatment using scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. The specimens were then cemented to resin blocks with a 4-META resin luting system (Superbond C&B). The shear bond strength of the zirconia/ resin interface was measured before and after thermocycling and fatigue testing. RESULTS The surface roughness and shear bond strength values of the SIE group were higher than those of the other three zirconia groups. The surface roughness (Ra) values were 8.10, 8.34, 9.42, and 12.42 μm for the C, A, A-SIE, and SIE groups, respectively, with significant differences between SIE and the C and A groups (p<0.05). The shear bond strength values before thermocycling and fatigue testing were 23.37, 23.38, 25.82, and 28.67 MPa for the C, A, A-SIE, and SIE groups, respectively. These values did not decrease after 10,000 cycles of thermocycling for the surface-treated groups, but did decrease for the untreated control group (C). CONCLUSION SIE treatment using a modified glass agent can increase surface roughness and the bond strength between zirconia and resin cements. The shear bond strength did not decrease after thermocycling and fatigue testing.
The Shear Bond Strength of Resin-Based Luting Cement to Zirconia Ceramics after Different Surface Treatments

Abstract:Due to its unique properties, zirconia is increasingly being used in dentistry, but surface preparation for bonding is difficult because of its polycrystalline structure. This study aimed to determine the effect of a new etching technique (Zircos-E) on Ceramill Zi (Amann Girrbach). The effect of etching and the use of primers (Monobond Plus and MKZ Primer) on the bond strength of zirconia with resin cement (NX3) was assessed. Shear bond strength was evaluated after storage in water for 24 h and after thermal aging (5000 thermocycling at 5 °C/55 °C). A scanning electron microscope (Hitachi S-4700) was used to evaluate the surface structure before and after the Zircos-E system. The roughness parameters were assessed using an SJ-410 profilometer. The etched zirconia surface is more homogeneous over the entire surface, but some localized forms of erosion exist. The etching of zirconia ceramics caused changes in the surface structure of zirconia and a significant increase in the shear bond strength between zirconia and resin cement. The use of primers positively affects the adhesion between resin cement and zirconia. Aging with thermocycler significantly reduced the shear bond strength, with one exception—sandblasted samples with MKZ Primer. Standard ceramic surface preparation, involving only alumina sandblasting, does not provide a satisfactory bond. The use of etching with the Zircos-E system and primers had a positive effect on the strength of the zirconium–resin cement connection.

Effects of glass-ceramic spray deposition manipulation on the surface characteristics of zirconia dental restorations

Abstract:A novel glass-ceramic spray deposition (GCSD) method was developed to modify the yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) surface and to enhance the bond strength between Y-TZP and resin cement. Five different experimental groups were characterized, non-treatment (NT), airborne particle abrasion (AB), GCSD without etching (GS), GCSD with 5% HF etching (GSE5), and GCSD with 9.5% HF etching (GSE9), to determine the optimal method for improving the bond strength. Scanning electron microscopy and an argon ion milling system were used to investigate the surface and cross-sectional microstructures. The changes in the surface characteristics of Y-TZP were analyzed via contact angle analysis, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The bond strengths were determined using shear bond strength test. The results revealed that GCSD could produce a dense and uniform lithium disilicate glass-ceramic coating layer and infiltrate the Y-TZP surface. This coating resulted in superior micromechanical interlocking and increased hydrophilicity, thereby enhancing the bond strength between Y-TZP and resin cement (P < 0.05). The study findings indicated that GCSD accompanied by 5% HF etching for 100 s is optimal for strengthening the Y-TZP/resin cement bond, thereby providing a novel solution for dental bonding systems.

This study aimed to assess and compare the effect of three types of lasers on the shear bond strength (SBS) of zirconia to resin cement.Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, 55 zirconia disks (6 mm diameter × 3 mm thickness) were randomly divided into five groups: control (1), sandblast (2), carbon dioxide (CO2) (3), erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er: YAG) (4), and neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) (5) laser irradiation. The surface morphology of one specimen from each group was evaluated by a scanning electron microscope. Zirconia disks were cemented to composite using Panavia F2. SBS test was performed at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min after 24 h storage in distilled water and thermocycling. The data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's HSD tests (α = 0.05).Results: The mean SBS values of the groups such as sandblast, Er: YAG, Nd: YAG, and CO2 lasers and control were 6.64 MPa, 6.63 MPa, 4.98 MPa, 4.39 MPa, and 2.32 MPa, respectively. No significant difference was observed between sandblast and Er: YAG laser and between Nd: YAG and CO2 lasers.Conclusion: All lasers increased SBS values of zirconia to resin cement in comparison to the untreated surface. Er: YAG laser was the most effective laser treatment on the bond strength equal to that of sandblast.
Effect of different treatments of highly translucent zirconia on the bonding strength between zirconia and veneering porcelain

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the bonding strength between highly translucent zirconia and veneering porcelain and to provide a research basis for improving the zirconium porcelain bond strength between zirconium and ceramic material.Methods Thirty cylindrical zirconia blocks with 10-mm diameter and 10-mm height were prepared and divided into four groups (n=7), labeled as control group (C), sandblasting group (S), bonding group (B), and sandblasting and bonding group (SB). The surface morphology of zirconia before and after sandblasting was observed in the remaining two specimens. Group C was veneered (2 mm in height and 5 mm in diameter) with porcelain powder by layering after grinding. Group S was sandblasted after grinding. Group B was veneered with a thin layer of porcelain powder as bond coating. Group SB was sandblasted and veneered with a thin layer of porcelain powder. After sintering, the shear specimens were embedded, and a shear bond strength test was conducted. Statistical analysis was conducted to analyze the data. Fracture surface analysis was also performed to determine the failure modes by stereomicroscopy.Results The bonding strength of group C was 21.86 ± 3.18 MPa. For group S, it was 22.12 ± 3.06 MPa. For group B, it was 19.19 ± 1.46 MPa. Finally, for group SB, it was 27.76 ± 1.95 MPa. There was no significant difference in shear strength between group C, group S and group B. There was a significant difference in shear strength between each group and group SB (P < 0.05). Under a stereomicroscope, the observed fracture modes of each group were mainly mixed failure.Conclusion Sandblasting cannot significantly increase the bonding strength between zirconia and veneering porcelain. Veneering with a thin layer of porcelain powder as the bond coating has no obvious effect on the bonding strength. Sandblasting and veneering with a thin layer of porcelain powder as a bond coating can significantly improve the bonding strength between zirconia and veneering porcelain.
Influence of Different Surface Pretreatments of Zirconium Dioxide Reinforced Lithium Disilicate Ceramics on the Shear Bond Strength of Self-Adhesive Resin Cement

Abstract:Aim: To analyze the influence of different surface pretreatments of zirconium dioxide reinforced lithium disilicate ceramics on the shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement. Materials and methods: Eighty-four zirconium reinforced lithium disilicate disc Vita suprinity (Vita Zahnfabrick, Bad Säckingen, Germany) 14x12x2 mm specimens were fabricated according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The specimens were embedded in acrylic resin blocks and randomly divided in seven groups (n=12/each) accorrding to the treatment: Group 1- 10% hydrofluoric acid; Group 2- silane; Group 3- hydrofluoric and silane; Group 4- sandblasting with silane; Group 5- Er: YAG laser+ silane; Group 6- Nd: YAG laser + silane; and the control group, in which the specimens were not treated. Round shape composite discs (Filtek Bulk fill, 3M ESPE, St.Paul, Minnesota, USA) with 3.5 mm diameter, were made for shear bond strength testing, and then cemented to the ceramic sample surface using composite cement (RelyX U200 Automix, 3M ESPE, Neuss, Germany). After cementing the composite disc on the sample, the samples were subjected to shear bond strength test of 10 N with a "stress rate" of 1 MPa / s. To determine the nature of the fracture (adhesive, cohesive or adhesive-cohesive), the broken samples were examined under a stereomicroscope. The ANOVA test and the Tukey test were used to compare the values of the bond strength characteristics between different types of materials. All tests were performed with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: There was a significant difference in the shear bond strength of self-adhesive cement to dental lithium-disilicate ceramics reinforced with zirconium dioxide after different preparation protocols (p<0, 05). The treatment of lithium disilicate ceramics reinforced with zirconium dioxide by silanization, sandblasting + silanization, Nd: YAG + silanization resulted in significantly higher bond strength compared to the control group. There was statistically higher bond strength of self-adhesive cement after pretreatment of lithium disilicate ceramics Nd: YAG + silanization compared to Er: YAG + silanization (p <0.05). Adhesive fracture dominated in the control group, sandblasting + silanization group, and in the laser groups, while mixed fracture dominated in other groups. Conclusion: Under the limitations of this study, the Nd:YAG irradiation with silanization could be used as pretreatment for providing greater shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to zirconium reinforced lithium disilicate.

Abstract:Objective:To evaluate the effect of cold plasma treatment on the bond strength between zirconia and resin cement.Methods:Eighty zirconia discs were randomly divided into eight groups (10 discs in each group) for different surface treatments:no surface treatment in Group 1 as a control;Primer,coated with Clearfil ceramic primer in Group 2.Sandblast,applied air abrasion with aluminum oxide particles in Group 3.Sandblast +Primer in Group 4.Cold plasma,put the discs under the nozzle with a distance of 5mm and treated with the cold plasma generated from the mixed gas of He (98％) and O2 (2％) for 10s in Group 5.Cold plasma+Primer in Group 6.Sandblast+Cold plasma in Group 7.Sandblast+Cold plasma+Primer in Group 8.Specimens of All the groups were surface treated prior to cementation with Panavia F 2.0 cement.Surface morphology and contact angle of water were measured.The shear bond strengths were tested and the failure modes were examined with a stereomicroscope.Results:Surface morphology showed no difference between the Cold plasma group and the Control group.The contact angle of water reduced after cold plasma treatment.The values of shear bond strength of specimens with cold plasma (16.81 MPa) were significantly higher than those with no treatment (9.41 MPa) and primer treatment (10.28 MPa).Sandblast+Cold plasma+Primer group showed the highest shear bond strength (23.95 MPa).XPS showed increase in O and decrease in C elements after cold plasma treatment.Conclusion:Zirconia specimen treated with cold plasma could significantly improve the hydrophilicity and the shear bond strength of zirconia.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To study the effect of different cleaning methods on the shear bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to saliva-contaminated high translucency zirconia and surface wettability.METHODS:Eighty zirconia specimens were randomly divided into 5 groups(n=16),i.e.,control group(not contaminated),75％ethanol group,cleaning paste group,airborne-particle abrasion group,and atmospheric pressure cold plasma group.The contact angles was measured,shear bond strength were examined,and fracture types were determined.SPSS 26.0 software package was used for statistical analysis of the data.RESULTS:The atmospheric pressure cold plasma group produced the lowest contact angle(P＜0.05).The shear bond strength of the airborne-particle abrasion group,the cleaning paste group and the atmospheric pressure cold plasma group respectively were similar to the control group without significant difference(P＞0.05),while those were significantly higher than 75％ethanol group(P＜0.05).The mixed fracture mode of the atmospheric pressure cold plasma group evidently increased.CONCLUSIONS:Airborne-particle abrasion,cleaning paste and atmospheric pressure cold plasma overcome the effects of saliva contamination,producing the shear bond strength to zirconia similar to the control group.The atmospheric pressure cold plasma improves hydrophilicity of high translucency zirconia significantly.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effect of etching with H2O2 on the bond strength between epoxy-based glass fiber posts and resin cement.METHODS:Sixteen epoxy-based glass fiber posts were randomly divided into 4 groups (4 posts in each group) for different surface treatments. Group 1, no surface treatment (Control group); Group 2, treated with silane coupling agent for 60 s; Group 3, immersed in 10% H2O2 for 10 min then treated with silane coupling agent for 60 s; Group 4, immersed in 30% H2O2 for 10 min then treated with silane coupling agent for 60 s. Resin cement was used for the post cementation to form resin slabs which were then sectioned and trimmed into dumbbell shape to obtain microtensile specimens. Microtensile bond strengths were tested and the failure modes were examined with a stereomicroscope. Statistical analysis of microtensile bond strengths was performed with Kruskal-Wallis test.RESULTS:The microtensile bond strengths (standard deviation) were 18.81 (4.04) MPa for Group 1, 26.70 (9.63) MPa for Group 2, 39.07 (6.47) MPa for Group 3, 46.05 (5.97) MPa for Group 4.CONCLUSION:Etching with H2O2 followed by silanization could significantly improve the bond strength between epoxy-based glass fiber posts and resin cement.

Abstract:Purpose: The aim of this study was to measure siloxane quantity, pH value, and resin wettability on ceramics silanized by five silane coupling agents, and to test the correlation of these parameters of silane coupling agents with bond durability between a machinable glass ceramic and resin cements. Materials and Methods: 1.5-mm-thick ceramic plates (ProCAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) were polished, cleaned, and bonded with ten combinations of five silane coupling agents (Monobond S [Ivoclar Vivadent], Rely X Ceramic Primer [3M], Clearfil Ceramic Primer [Kuraray], GC Ceramic Primer [GC], Porcelain Liner M [Sun Medical]) and two dual-curing resin cements (VariolinkII [VLII, Ivoclar Vivadent], Linkmax HV [LMHV, GC]). Their microshear bond strength was measured after 0, 10,000, and 30,000 thermal cycles. Siloxane quantity, pH value of silane coupling agents and contact angle of Heliobond (Ivoclar Vivadent) to silanized ceramic were measured using a FTIR spectrophotometer, pH-indicator strips, and a contact-angle meter, respectively. Bond strength data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA. For each cement, Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to analyze possible correlation between bond strength under different thermocycling conditions and absorbance peak of siloxane, pH value of silane coupling agents, and contact angle of resin to the silanized ceramic surface. Results: The bond strength of ceramic was significantly influenced by the silane coupling agent and thermal cycles, not by resin cement. For both cements, only a negative correlation was found to be significant between the contact angle of resin to silanized ceramic surfaces and bond strength after 30,000 thermal cycles. Conclusion: The better wettability of resin on different silanized ceramic surfaces could improve their bond durability.
Different surface treatments and adhesive monomers for zirconia-resin bonds: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Abstract:This review examined the efficacy of surface treatments and adhesive monomers for enhancing zirconia-resin bond strength. A comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library yielded relevant in vitro studies. Employing pairwise and Bayesian network meta-analyses, 77 articles meeting inclusion criteria were analyzed. Gas plasma was found to be ineffective, while treatments including air abrasion, silica coating, laser, selective infiltration etching, hot etching showed varied effectiveness. Air abrasion with finer particles (25-53 µm) showed higher immediate bond strength than larger particles (110-150 µm), with no significant difference post-aging. The Rocatec silica coating system outperformed the CoJet system in both immediate and long-term bond strength. Adhesives containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) were superior to other acidic monomers. The application of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and silane did not improve bonding performance. Notably, 91.2 % of bonds weakened after aging, but this effect was less pronounced with air abrasion or silica coating. The findings highlight the effectiveness of air abrasion, silica coating, selective infiltration etching, hot etching, and laser treatment in improving bond strength, with 10-MDP in bonding agents enhancing zirconia bonding efficacy.

Abstract:Background: Adhesion to zirconia remains a significant dental challenge. This study is aimed at assessing the bond strength of zirconia based on surface treatment with pre or postsintering sandblasting associated with different chemical treatments and resin cements. Methods: Zirconia blocks were divided into 12 experimental groups based on the surface treatment (presintering sandblasting or postsintering sandblasting/tribochemical abrasion treatment), chemical treatment (none, Single Bond Universal, or Signum Zirconia Bond), and choice of cement (Panavia F or RelyXTM U200). The bond strength was measured by shear tests using a universal testing machine. The fracture analysis was performed using stereomicroscopy. Data were analyzed using three‐way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 5%). Results: Triple and double factor's interactions were not significant (p > 0.05). Regarding the surface treatment factor, the bond strength following postsintering sandblasting treatment associated with tribochemical abrasion (9.15 ± 3.62 MPa) was significantly higher than presintering sandblasting treatment (5.24 ± 3.53 MPa). Concerning the chemical treatment factor, bond strengths were ranked as follows: Signum Zirconia Bond > Single Bond Universal > no treatment. The bond strength of the resin cements did not differ among them. Most fractures (67%) were classified as adhesive, and 32% were categorized as mixed fractures. Conclusion: Surface treatment via postsintering sandblasting combined with tribochemical abrasion demonstrated superior efficacy than in presintering sandblasting. Additionally, chemical treatment with zirconia primer increased the bond strength of zirconia irrespective of the surface physical treatment.
