Abstract:Abstract The work presents results on the effect of prior martensite formation on bainite transformation kinetics in a 3% medium-Mn multiphase steel. The material was subjected to two isothermal holding temperatures: 400 °C (without martensite) and 350 °C (with prior martensite). According to obtained dilatometric results, the formation of prior martensite leads to the acceleration of bainite transformation kinetics. The bainite formation starts and finishes much faster, when the prior martensite was present before the isothermal holding. The microstructural investigation of the steel after heat treatment was carried out using light and scanning electron microscopy. The microstructures were composed of fine bainitic laths with retained austenite and small amount of martensitic-austenitic islands at 400 °C. At 350 °C the presence of large tempered martensite laths was detected. The bainite is composed of a mixture of fine and coarse laths. The increase of the bainitic lath thickness is attributed to the coalescence process occurring at the lower holding temperature. The differences in the steel hardness after the two heat treatments were relatively small (~ 13 HV10).

Abstract:A pre-formed martensitic quenching plus inverted multi-step austempering process is performed on a medium-carbon alloy steel: after austenitization, the specimen is cooled to 175 °C below the martensite start temperature (Ms), then raised to the first austempering step at 220 °C for 5 h, followed by the second step at 300 °C and held for 3 h. The conventional inverted multi-step austempering process and the one-step austempering process are carried out to form a contrast test. Through pre-formed martensitic quenching plus an inverted multi-step austempering process, the martensite/austenite (M/A) and bainitic ferrite in the microstructure are refined. The total time used for heat treatment is reduced markedly due to accelerating bainitic ferrite formation. This study provides theoretical support for the process design of ultra-fine bainitic steel.

Abstract:In this study, we have successfully developed lower, upper, and inverse bainite morphologies in a 0.8wt.% C steel through a meticulously designed heat treatment process. The steel underwent a precise sequence of thermal treatments, commencing with austenitization at 900 °C for 30 minutes, followed by austempering at temperatures of 400 °C, 480 °C, and 500 °C, each for a duration of 60 minutes. The deliberate adjustment of carbon content to a higher level played a pivotal role in facilitating the intriguing inverse bainitic transformation. Our findings, corroborated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive x-ray diffraction analysis, unequivocally validate the successful formation of these uniquemicrostructures. Further insights emerge from the micro-Vickers hardness testing, which reveals the order of hardness among the samples. The upper bainite structure outperforms all, showcasing the highest hardness. Following closely is the enigmatic inverse bainite, trailed by lower bainite. The traditional ferrite-pearlite structure, which has long been a benchmark, lagsbehind in terms of hardness. This research not only advances our understanding of the bainitic transformations in high-carbon steels but also highlights the potential for tailored material properties for various engineering applications.

Abstract:The aim of this work was to develop a novel bainitic steel that will be specifically dedicated to achieving a high degree of refinement (nano- or submicron scale) along with increased thermal stability of the structure at elevated temperatures. The material was characterized by improved in-use properties, expressed as the thermal stability of the structure, compared to nanocrystalline bainitic steels with a limited fraction of carbide precipitations. Assumed criteria for the expected low martensite start temperature, bainitic hardenability level, and thermal stability are specified. The steel design process and complete characteristics of the novel steel including continuous cooling transformation and time-temperature-transformation diagrams based on dilatometry are presented. Moreover, the influence of bainite transformation temperature on the degree of structure refinement and dimensions of austenite blocks was also determined. It was assessed whether, in medium-carbon steels, it is possible to achieve a nanoscale bainitic structure. Finally, the effectiveness of the applied strategy for enhancing thermal stability at elevated temperatures was analyzed.

Abstract:The microstructure evolution and strain hardening behaviour of a low-carbon carbide-free bainitic steel prepared by either single-step austempering (420 °C or 365 °C), conventional two-step austempering (420 °C then 365 °C) or inverted two-step austempering (365 °C then 420 °C) treatments were investigated. The results show that when the total isothermal holding time was the same, the inverted two-step austempering treatment (first completing bainitic transformation at low-temperature and then annealing at high-temperature austempering) led to the highest toughness (30.7 GPa%) due to the finer bainitic microstructure and higher fraction of film-like retained austenite. Grain refinement and transformation-induced plasticity allowed the material to achieve high ductility without sacrificing strength. Comparing single-step austempering at 365 °C with the inverted two-step austempering process indicates that annealing at a higher temperature after completion of the bainitic transformation resulted in better tensile properties because of a lower dislocation density and more stabler retained austenite. In addition, the samples heat-treated by the conventional two-step austempering process exhibited slower bainite transformation kinetics and the worse tensile properties than the sample which was heat-treated using a single-step austempering treatment at 365 °C or the one which was heat-treated using an inverted two-step heat treatment. Through the analysis of the orientation relationships, it is observed that the original austenite and the bainitic plates mainly followed the K-S orientation relationships regardless of whether the bainite plates were formed in the first or the second heat-treatment step. Abstract:Based on the work of Bainite Research and Development Center at Tsinghua University, a novel 1 500 MPa economical bainite/martensite duplex steel has been designed and investigated. A carbide free bainite with fine bainite/martensite mixed microstructure can be obtained by air-cooling after austenization. The properties of the new steel, tempered at 280 ℃, are as follows: σb≥1 500 MPa，σ0.2≥1 200 MPa，δ5≥14 %，ψ≥57 %，aku≥100 J/cm2. More fine microstructure may lower the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement of the steel.

Abstract:Binder jetting additive manufacturing of 420 martensitic stainless steel is attractive due to its low-cost and high efficiency, however, the as-sintered parts do not typically provide the desired properties. Here, a heat treatment route was designed to improve its mechanical properties. The heat treatment increased the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) from 657 MPa to 1032 MPa compared to the as-sintered state, while the elongation to fracture decreased from 6.9% to 5%. The increase in martensite fraction as a result of martensitic transformation is responsible for the enhanced UTS of the heat-treated sample.

Abstract:In this study, multi-phase steel with a mixture of ferrite, bainite, retained austenite and martensite is obtained after specific heat treatments, which include intercritical annealing, isothermal holding and final quenching. The microstructural constituents and individual phase fractions are precisely quantified based on multi-scale characterizations. The focus is on bainite transformation kinetics and its impact on the microstructural evolution, which is systematically analyzed according to the assumption of displacive modeling theory. Bainite transformation begins with austenite grain-boundary nucleation and continues through autocatalytic nucleation based on nucleation kinetics of bainitic sub-units. A small discrepancy between the modeling and experimental results is indicative of carbon partitioning into austenite, which reduces the driving force and/or the rate parameter κ for bainite transformation. In addition, the continuous carbon enrichment in austenite decelerates the bainite transformation and prolongs the duration time. Moreover, the maximum carbon concentration in austenite is limited by the T0 line. Austenite with a lower carbon content but higher volume fraction will not transform to bainite at higher isothermal bainite transformation temperatures, and such mechanically unstable austenite is more likely to transform to martensite during final quenching. As a result, with increasing isothermal holding temperature, the bainite and retained austenite fractions decrease while the martensite fraction increases in the sepcimens after final quenching.

Abstract:To take advantage of the combination of heavily warm/cold rolling and cyclic salt-bath treatment, ultra-fine martensite with isotropic microstructure was tansformed from equiaxial prior austenite (PA) with grain size approximately 300 ∼ 600 nm. Only ultra-fine martensitic laths with widths less than 50 nm were developed instead of traditional hierarchical martensitic packet-block-lath, which is attributed to ultra-fine austenite stabilization mechanism and limited transition space. The exceptional properties of this low-carbon martensitic steel can be improved to an ultimate tensile strength of ∼ 1976 MPa and a total elongation of ∼ 10.1 %.

Abstract:Abstract Strip material with a thickness of 0.85 m was austempered in a suitable continuous hardening furnace for the further development of blade body steels used for thin-cutting circular and band saw blades. This work also comprised the search for a rather straightforward metallographic preparation procedure allowing for a reliable identification of the microstructure and microstructural constituents. The prepared microstructure can be revealed using Nital or Beraha and LePera etching solutions. None of the three etchants allows a reliable and reproducible distinction of the microstructural constituents of the extremely fine-grained lower bainite using light-optical techniques. Only the use of the scanning electron microscope at higher magnifications allows a reliable identification of the characteristic bainite fiber bundles. For this examination, etching with Nital is recommended.

Abstract:Bainite transformation is a kinetic process that involves complex solid diffusion and phase structure evolution. This research systematically studies the bainite transformation of austempered 4140 steel in a wide range of isothermal temperatures, in which four bainite phases structures were generated: upper bainite; mixed upper bainite and lower bainite; lower bainite and mixed lower bainite and martensite. The kinetics of bainite transformation has been described with a linear trend using an Avrami n-value. It was found that the bainitic ferrite sheaves grow with widthwise preference. The sheaves are stable when half-grown and are variable in length, due to austenite size limit or soft/hard impingement, or autocatalytic nucleation, or these conditions combined. The full-grown upper/lower bainite sheaves were found to be 1.9 μm/1.2 μm in width under the conditions of this study. Each individual bainite sheave is lath-like instead of wedge-like. The upper bainite sheaves mostly appear as broad-short-coarse lath, while the lower bainite sheaves appear as narrow-long-fine lath. The overall bainite transformation activation energy ranges from 50–167 kJ/mol.

Abstract:The application of electrical contact heating (ECH) in austenitic grain refining of ultra-pure 42CrMoVNb steel was introduced. The ECH equipment was designed to reach uniform heating of uniform heat transfer in the sample. The 42CrMoVNb steel treated possesses uniform microstructure with an average austenite grain size of 1.4 mu m, higher strength (1 538 MPa) and impact toughness (81 J/cm(2)).

Abstract:In the present paper, the designed thermomechanical process was applied to prepare ferrite/bainite multiphase microstructures in Si-rich low-alloy steel with a carbon content of 0.33 wt.% (0.33C) and 0.21 wt.% (0.21C). The microstructures were analyzed by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, and electron backscatter diffraction, and the mechanical properties (tensile and impact properties) were tested. The results showed that, on the premise of obtaining 15 vol.% ferrite in both steels, the ferrite grains in the 0.33C steel were polygonal with an average grain size of 2.2 μm, recrystallized more completely. However, the ferrite grains in the 0.21C steel were mainly long strip-shaped with a width of 2–4 μm, and the recrystallization degree was poor. In addition, upon increasing the austempering temperature, bainite ferrite laths were formed in the 0.33C steel, and the thickness was in the range of 81–123 nm. The morphology of bainite ferrite in the 0.21C steel gradually changed from lath to granular. Upon increasing the austempering temperature, the tensile strength and yield strength of both steels increased and the elongation decreased slightly. The impact energy of the two steels showed different trends upon increasing the austempering temperature, in which the impact energy of the 0.33C steel increased, while that of the 0.21C steel decreased. This is due to the difference size of the martensite-austenite constituents in the two steels.

Abstract:The tempering of two-phase mixtures of bainitic ferrite and carbon-enriched retained austenite has been investigated in an effort to separate the reactions that occur at elevated temperatures from any transformation during cooling to ambient conditions. It is demonstrated using synchrotron X-radiation measurements that the residue of austenite left at the tempering temperature partly decomposes by martensitic transformation when the sample is cooled. It is well established in the published literature that films of retained austenite are better able to resist stress or strain-induced martensitic transformation than any coarser particles of austenite. In contrast, the coarser austenite is more resistant to the precipitation of cementite during tempering than the film form because of its lower carbon concentration.

Abstract:A high-strength low-carbon construction structural steel was investigated in the laboratory. The various austenite grain sizes were obtained by austenitizing the steel at different temperatures. The effect of austenite grain size on bainite transformation was studied by the dilatometer. The results show that the microstructure of high-strength low-carbon structural steels mainly includes granular bainite, lath-like bainite and martensite-austenite (M-A). The microstructure changes from granular bainite to lath-like bainite with the increase in austenitizing temperature or austenite grain size. When the samples were heated at the lower temperature of 860 °C, the bainite starting temperature was relatively high, which was mainly attributed to the promotion of the granular bainitic nucleation and the formation of the solute-depleted regions in the austenite. Compared to 860 and 1260 °C, the bainite transformation rate in the specimen austenitized at 1000 °C is the highest because of the small prior austenite grain size and larger transformation driving force.

Abstract:Ausforming processes are those thermomechanical treatments in which austenite is plastically deformed before either a martensitic or a bainitic transformation takes place. Although the deformation of an austenitized steel at intermediate temperatures has many benefits, it can also induce displacive transformations, sometimes unavoidably at the industrial level. Although the addition of a mechanical driving force, associated to the applied stress, has been shown to accelerate the bainitic transformations and promote transformation plasticity and variant selection, little information is found on the effect of stress on parameters such as bainitic ferrite plate thickness or volume percentage of retained austenite. Some works suggest that constant stresses can coarsen bainitic ferrite plates and increase the amount of transformed bainitic ferrite, although no systematic work has been conducted in this regard. This work aims to better understand the characteristics of bainitic microstructures formed during the application of stress or under constant stress and discuss the mechanisms affecting the bainitic transformations. Among the obtained results, it can be highlighted that, at temperatures below the bainite start temperature, bainitic ferrite plates formed during straining are more refined that isothermally formed plates at the same temperature, whereas constant stresses leads to an increased fraction of coarser bainitic ferrite plates, as compared to those microstructures obtained at the same temperature.

Abstract:The effect of heat treatment and deep cryogenic treatment on microstructural evolution of low carbon martensitic bearing steel was investigated. The experimental results showed that the lath martensite was obtained by quenching and a few twins as substructures formed in some martensitic laths. The rudiment of sub-interfaces of martensitic lath was formed in the high-density dislocation regions after deep cryogenic treatment; meanwhile, the number of twins increased, especially in the high-density dislocation regions. This phenomenon is due to the increase in internal stress caused by cryogenic treatment. After tempering, the rudiment of sub-interface further evolved into the martensitic lath boundary, and thus the original martensitic laths were refined. The twins formed by cryogenic treatment did not disappear after tempering. In addition, small quantities of annealing twins formed in tempering process. Martensitic laths morphology and substructures in different stages of the heat and deep cryogenic treatment were observed by transmission electron microscopy.

Austenite Formation and Cementite Dissolution During Intercritical Annealing of a Medium-Manganese Steel from a Martensitic Condition

Abstract:In the present study, in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction (HEXRD), dilatometry, and metallography were conducted for the purpose of understanding microstructure evolution during intercritical annealing of a Fe-0.19C-4.39Mn steel from a martensitic initial condition. Three different simulations for austenite growth and solute partitioning during isothermal holding were conducted using the DICTRATMmodule of Thermo-Calc®. The microstructures after intercritical annealing exhibit filmlike retained austenite; however, in situ HEXRD indicates that retained austenite in the initial martensitic microstructure had decomposed upon heating to the isothermal holding temperature, suggesting that film-like austenite may be generated during intercritical annealing via nucleation and growth of new austenite and without necessarily preserving initial retained austenite films in the martensitic microstructure. Metallography and in situ HEXRD also indicate that cementite had formed upon heating but did not readily dissolve during an 1800 s isothermal hold although considerable growth of austenite had occurred during the isothermal hold, suggesting that austenite nucleation and initial growth during intercritical annealing does not solely occur due to carbon partitioning. A simulation incorporating cementite suggests that the increase in austenite fraction during intercritical annealing initially occurs in association with Mn partitioning followed by austenite growth induced by gradual cementite dissolution.

The critical temperatures of the transformations occurring under heating and cooling are determined. The kinetics of the isothermal transformation of the austenite in the temperature range of 300 – 400°C is analyzed. The possibility of successful implementation of isothermal quenching of the steel after carburizing is demonstrated.
