Abstract:Bending losses of nanofibers or nanowires with circular 90 degrees bends are simulated using a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method. Dependences of bending losses on wavelength and polarization of guided light are investigated, as well as the diameters, refractive indices, and bending radii of nanowires. The acceptable bending losses (approximately 1 dB/90 degrees) predicted in glass, polymer, and semiconductor nanowires with bending radii down to micrometer level may offer valuable references for assembling highly compact photonic integrated circuits or devices with optical nanowires.

Abstract:This work analyzes the radiation loss of bent waveguides with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The radiation loss is main part of the bent waveguide loss which is most important limitation for the performance and application of waveguides. This paper presents the situation of the light-wave transition in bent waveguides, and the rule of the radiation loss changing along with the parameters of bent waveguides.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:A novel terahertz anti-resonant fiber is designed and described. The high-resistivity silicon in the fiber mitigating the effective material loss and the nested double-layer U-shape tubes work together to reduce the transmission loss. The confinement loss and effective material loss are analyzed and optimized by the finite element method. The optimized fiber shows a total loss of 3.1 × 10 −3 dB/m at 1 THz and the low-loss transmission bandwidth is 0.44 THz in the range of 0.5–1.5 THz. The influence of bending on the transmission loss is analyzed and the bending loss is less than 2.1 × 10 −2 dB/m at 1 THz for bending radii bigger than 60 cm. The anti-resonant fiber delivers excellent performance and has high commercial potential in terahertz waveguides.

Abstract:A new type of anti-resonant hollow-core fiber for terahertz waveguides is proposed. By introducing central support pillars and an elliptical structure, the fiber achieves high birefringence while maintaining low confinement loss and low material absorption loss. The fiber structure is optimized through simulation using the finite element method. The optimized fiber exhibits a birefringence of up to 1.22 × 10−2 at a frequency of 1 THz, with a confinement loss of 8.34 × 10−6 dB/cm and a material absorption loss of 7.17 × 10−3 dB/cm. Furthermore, when the bending radius of the fiber is greater than 12 cm, the bending loss of the anti-resonant optical fiber at 1 THz is less than 1.36 × 10−4 dB/cm, demonstrating good bending resistance and high practical value. It is expected to play a significant role in optical communication systems.

Abstract:This paper presents the transmission characteristics of flexible solid circular dielectric waveguides in the terahertz frequency band. In this paper, we measured the electrical properties of certain polymers within 325–500 GHz. Through simulation and measurement, the transmission loss, bending loss, and electric field distribution of solid-core polymer dielectric waveguides were analyzed and discussed. Additionally, we considered the surrounding cladding of the dielectric waveguide, the signal-feeding mode transmitter, and the interconnection of the dielectric waveguide. Ultimately, in the operating frequency range of 325–500 GHz, we selected PTFE rods with diameters of 0.5 mm and 1 mm as the dielectric waveguides, with measured transmission loss of less than 30 dB/m and 33 dB/m, respectively, and bending loss of less than 1 dB/m. The described dielectric waveguide has engineering significance for short-distance connections in complex geometric environments and provides a reference for subsequent research.

Abstract:A novel anti-resonant fiber for low-loss terahertz waveguides is proposed and analyzed. The terahertz fiber uses high-resistivity silicon as the bulk material and nine nested double-layer concentric circular tubes in the cladding to reduce propagation losses. The effects of the geometric parameters on the propagation characteristics are analyzed by the finite element method. The result indicates that an ultra-low total loss of 4.9×10 −4 dB/m is achieved at f =1THz. The low-loss propagation window is 0.48 THz ranging from 0.6 to 1.4 THz. In addition, the influence of mechanical bending on the propagation loss is investigated and the bending loss can be maintained at less than 7.3×10 −3 dB/m at f =1THz even if the bending radius is larger than 60 cm. The properties of this anti-resonant fiber are significantly superior to those of previously reported structures and the fiber thus has large commercial potential.

Abstract:We have fabricated resonant terahertz metamaterials on free standing polyimide substrates. The low-loss polyimide substrates can be as thin as 5.5 micron yielding robust large-area metamaterials which are easily wrapped into cylinders with a radius of a few millimeters. Our results provide a path forward for creating multi-layer non-planar metamaterials at terahertz frequencies.

Improving the thermal dimensional stability of flexible polymer composite backing materials for ultrasound transducers

Abstract:Novel ultrasound backing materials based on polymer composites with improved dimensional stability and low coefficient of thermal expansion are being developed and analyzed. For this purpose a filled epoxy resin (Stycast(1265)), a commonly used backing material, was considered reference material and polyurethane composites (PU(2305), PU(2350)) were proposed as better alternatives. When compared to the reference, the PU(2350) filled with a mixture of Al(2)O(3) and tungsten exhibited an approximately 15 times lower glassy transition temperature and a 2.5 time lower longitudinal thermal expansion at 20 degrees C. This ensures that within the entire operational temperature range the backing material is flexible, minimizing the thermal stresses induced onto transducer elements soldered joints and piezoceramic core. For the same material, the attenuation at 5MHz was similar to the reference material while at 7 and 8.5MHz it was 33% and 54% higher respectively. From these analyses it is concluded that the newly developed polyurethane composites outperform the reference backing with respect to the thermal dimensional stability as well as to the damping properties. An integrated rigorous mechano-acoustical approach is being proposed as an appropriate passive material design path. It can be easily extended to any other passive materials used for ultrasound transducer conception.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The compact UWB flexible filter with low loss and excellent stop band suppression on ultrathin liquid crystal polymer substrate is presented firstly. A uniform microstrip line connected with five pairs of stubs is used. The flexible filter with the pass band of 4.1–10.6 GHz. The measured minimum insertion loss is 0.76 dB at 5.4 GHz and the return loss is better than 11.3 dB. While the frequency is higher than 12.1 GHz, excellent high resistance band suppression is obtained. The bending behavior of the UWB flexible filter is analyzed. In case of R = 17.5 mm, the insertion loss is only improved by 0.004 dB and the return loss is optimized by 0.45dB. Abstract:A pulsed Er:YAG laser and a preionised pulsed HF laser were used for the evaluation of the transmission properties of fluoride glass fibers as well as a cyclic olefin polymer-coated silver (COP/Ag) hollow glass and a silica hollow glass waveguide. Both lasers provided an output of 100 mJ/pulse, with a repetition rate of 1Hz at 3 mu m wavelength. The pulse duration of the two lasers was 200 ns for the HF and 80 mu s for the Er:YAG. The evaluation of the fiber and waveguide properties include both straight and bend loss characteristics.
A Small Polymeric Ridge Waveguide with a High Index Contrast

Abstract:In this paper, an optimal design of a small polymeric ridge waveguide with a high index contrast is presented. In order to reduce the leakage to the substrate and pure bending losses, the buffer layer of the present waveguide is etched partially. The single-mode condition, the bending characteristics, and the birefringence of the present small polymeric ridge waveguide are also studied. By adjusting the core width and the core height, it is possible to obtain a polarization-insensitive small polymer ridge waveguide. For the bending loss, the numerical results show that the dominant part is the transition loss between the straight and bending sections (other than the pure bending loss) and the transition loss could be reduced greatly by introducing a lateral offset. However, the transition loss is still too large to obtain a very small bending radius (e.g., 10 mum). When only the pure bending loss is necessary to consider in some special case (e.g., microrings without any transitions), one can have a bending radius less than 10 mum due to the possibility of low pure bending loss.

Abstract:We present an experimental study on a flexible terahertz (THz) pipe PMMA waveguide. The attenuation loss of this pipe at 3.1THz was 9.65dB/m. Further more, bending loss of the pipe waveguides was investigated. The experimental result shows good transmission properties of the pipe.

Abstract:We have fabricated a 0.8-km long high performance antiresonant hollow-core fiber (AR-HCF) with a transmission attenuation of ~12 dB/km. And its bending loss behavior has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. The fabricated AR-HCF exhibits an outstanding anti-bending performance in wide wavelength range from 1300 nm to 1750 nm, and an ultralow bending loss @ 1612nm ≤10 dB/km at a bend radius of 1.6 cm is obtained.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) waves have broad application prospects in fields such as communication, imaging, safety monitoring and biomedicine. With the rapid development of THz technology, the demands for its transmission waveguides, especially high-performance THz waveguides with low loss, single mode delivery and flexible transmission are increasing. This will provide important support for improving the flexibility of THz systems and promoting their practical development. We review the design and fabrication process of metallic waveguides and dielectric metallic waveguides, their characteristics of loss and single-polarization single-mode transmission in the frequency bands of 0. 1. 0. 3 THz and 2. 0-5. 0 THz, as well as their applications in communication and imaging. We mainly focus on the research results of our research group in the design, characteristic simulation, fabrication, evaluation, and related applications of waveguides in recent years. And preliminary exploration is conducted on the difficulties and prospects in the development of THz waveguides.

Abstract:The continuously increasing interest in flexible and integrated photonics requires new strategies for device manufacturing on arbitrary complex surfaces and with smallest possible size, respectively. Terahertz (THz) technology can particularly benefit from this achievement to make compact systems for emission, detection and on-demand manipulation of THz radiation. Here, we present a novel fabrication method to realize conformable terahertz metasurfaces. The flexible and versatile character of polymeric nanomembranes is combined with direct laser writing via two-photon polymerization to develop free-standing ultra-thin quasi-perfect plasmonic absorbers with an unprecedentedly high level of conformability. Moreover, revealing new flexible dielectric materials presenting low absorption and permittivity in the THz range, this work paves the way for the realization of ultra-thin, conformable hybrid or all-dielectric devices to enhance and enlarge the application of THz technologies, and flexible photonics in general.

Abstract:This letter applies bent cavity resonators to realize a low-profile frequency selective structure exhibiting high selectivity of filtering response. The structure is realized through substrate integrated waveguide technology. Its unit cell includes three cavities that support TE101 and TE102 modes of rectangular waveguides. Couplings of these cavities with air is adjusted in such a way that two transmission zeros are produced near the skirts of a narrow passband. The concept of bent waveguides is proposed to reduce the overall thickness by 38%. A prototype is designed and fabricated with its frequency centered at 10.4 GHz. A relatively stable frequency response is exhibited for TE polarization, under a moderate variation (<30°) of incident angle. Measured results are in good agreement with those obtained through simulations.

Abstract:For the application of geometrically induced THz surface wave technology for communication and sensing, a critical analysis of the propagation characteristics (i.e., dispersion and attenuation) for different textured surfaces should be studied and benchmarked. For the broadband characterization of archetypal textured surfaces (e.g., corrugated plane, 2-D array of blind holes and bed of nails) supporting THz transverse magnetic (i.e., p-polarized) surface waves, we employ time-domain spectroscopy and edge-diffraction coupling methods. Measurements of laser micromachined prototypes demonstrate strong frequency-dependent dispersion and the large impact that surface roughness of the order of few m has on the path loss, increasing it by a factor ranging from 1.6 to 4.3 compared to smooth textured surfaces. Together with numerical modeling, we disentangle all loss mechanisms (namely, ohmic, scattering, propagation divergence, and phase mismatch) and highlight the challenge of loss estimation due to surface roughness in highly confined THz surface waves.

Abstract:A broadband elastic wave absorption by a sub-wavelength and lightweight structure is of considerable significance in vibration suppression, especially for low frequencies in plate-like structure. However, it has always been a great challenge. In this research, we systematically study the flexural wave diffraction in a thin plate. Based on the diffraction mechanism, we propose the concept of sub-wavelength lossy gradient elastic metasurface for flexural wave absorption. We theoretically reveal high-efficiency and quasi-omnidirectional absorption behavior, which stem from maximum multireflection-enhanced absorption of the 0th order diffraction. We experimentally demonstrate a robust high-efficiency absorption in the frequency range from 340 to 1000 Hz (larger than 1.5 octaves). In addition, we propose a general approach which involves new physics of adjusting an arrangement sequence of subunits to suppress the first-order diffraction mode. This allows to further reduce the sub-wavelength thickness of the metasurface while maintaining its high-efficiency absorption. Our designs could provide new routes to broadband vibration suppression and cancellation in low frequency by lossy elastic metamaterials and metasurfaces.

Abstract:The loss mechanism of bent waveguide including the bending loss, propagation loss, radiation loss and the loss of mode conversion are theorically analysed in this paper.It focuses on the review of the design of low loss bent waveguide, including materials, the shape of bent waveguide, strip or rib waveguide, the width, height and radius of the bent waveguide, the dismatch of mode, the shape of the curve and other new structures.The representative works on the design and fabrication of low loss bent waveguides are summarized.The development status of the low loss bent waveguide is analysed and its applications in integrated optical are introduced.The future developing trend of bent waveguide is to develope the theory of the loss characterization and wave coupling, and to realize low bending loss with very small bending radii for high desity integration in Photonics Integrated Circuits(PICs).
