Abstract:We present an experimental study on a flexible terahertz (THz) pipe PMMA waveguide. The attenuation loss of this pipe at 3.1THz was 9.65dB/m. Further more, bending loss of the pipe waveguides was investigated. The experimental result shows good transmission properties of the pipe.

Abstract:The fiber drawing technique provides a simple way to fabricate thin-wall polymer pipe with smooth surface and sufficient structure strength for bending. In this paper, fiber drawing technique is used to fabricate thin-wall polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) pipe for THz transmission. The fabricated pipe has a wall thickness as small as 200μm, which can be used as antiresonant terahertz (THz) waveguide with broad transmission bandwidth. Its transmission performance is measured at 3.1THz, including output field distribution, transmission loss and bending loss, showing its potential on THz transmission. Theoretical analysis shows that further performance improvement can be achieved by optimizing the wall thickness and utilizing the polymer materials with lower absorption in THz band.

Abstract:A self-supporting polymer pipe is proposed for THz wave transmission. Theoretical analysis and experiment shows that it can support single-mode transmission at THz band. The measured attenuation coefficient of the single HE11 mode transmission is no more than 3dB/m.

Abstract:Guided THz wave characteristics in a parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) consisting of ferroelectric film (LiNbO3 and LiTaO3) and multilayer graphene (MLG) is studied in this paper, with their low and tunable attenuation valley predicted. The electrical conductivity of MLG is calculated by a set of closed-form equations with the coupling effect between the bottom graphene layer (BGL) and its substrate taken into account carefully, while the dispersive behavior of ferroelectric film itself is described by the Lorentz model over an ultra-wide THz band. It is shown that the guided TM-mode propagation can be adjusted effectively by changing temperature, frequency, optical pumping intensity, MLG layer number, film thickness and its transverse optical-phonon frequency. Moreover, one low attenuation valley of TM-mode in such ferroelectric-graphene waveguide is captured, which can be exploited for developing some THz planar tunable waveguides with ultra-low loss.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:This paper presents the transmission characteristics of flexible solid circular dielectric waveguides in the terahertz frequency band. In this paper, we measured the electrical properties of certain polymers within 325–500 GHz. Through simulation and measurement, the transmission loss, bending loss, and electric field distribution of solid-core polymer dielectric waveguides were analyzed and discussed. Additionally, we considered the surrounding cladding of the dielectric waveguide, the signal-feeding mode transmitter, and the interconnection of the dielectric waveguide. Ultimately, in the operating frequency range of 325–500 GHz, we selected PTFE rods with diameters of 0.5 mm and 1 mm as the dielectric waveguides, with measured transmission loss of less than 30 dB/m and 33 dB/m, respectively, and bending loss of less than 1 dB/m. The described dielectric waveguide has engineering significance for short-distance connections in complex geometric environments and provides a reference for subsequent research.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) waves have broad application prospects in fields such as communication, imaging, safety monitoring and biomedicine. With the rapid development of THz technology, the demands for its transmission waveguides, especially high-performance THz waveguides with low loss, single mode delivery and flexible transmission are increasing. This will provide important support for improving the flexibility of THz systems and promoting their practical development. We review the design and fabrication process of metallic waveguides and dielectric metallic waveguides, their characteristics of loss and single-polarization single-mode transmission in the frequency bands of 0. 1. 0. 3 THz and 2. 0-5. 0 THz, as well as their applications in communication and imaging. We mainly focus on the research results of our research group in the design, characteristic simulation, fabrication, evaluation, and related applications of waveguides in recent years. And preliminary exploration is conducted on the difficulties and prospects in the development of THz waveguides.

Abstract:This work proposed a vacuum evaporation method in preparing an Ag/polypropylene (PP) terahertz (THz) hollow waveguide (HWG). Rray model and COMSOL were used to optimize the geometric structure parameters of the HWG. Accordingly, a 5 mm bore PP tube with a wall thickness of 360 μm was selected as the structural and dielectric tube, and a silver reflective layer was deposited onto the outer surface of the PP tube using vacuum evaporation process. The as-deposited Ag layer consists of small Ag particles (about 100 nm) which contribut to form a more uniform and smoother metal reflective layer than that could be prepared via the wet chemical method. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) analysis confirms that the Ag/PP THz HWG exhibits a low-loss window centered at the frequency of 0.1 or 0.3 THz. The HWG sample shows low transmission losses of 2.26 dB/m at 0.1 THz and 1.23 dB/m at 0.3 THz, respectively. The THz waves could be stably transmitted through the as-fabricated Ag/PP waveguide at low (−78.5 °C) and high (65 °C) temperatures. This research opens a simple and environmentally friendly avenue for the fabrication of low-loss metal/dielectric THz HWG. It is helpful for promoting the applications of THz HWG in future THz imaging, sensing and 6G communication.

Abstract:Terahertz imaging has been developed rapidly in recent years. However, conventional terahertz imaging systems are often bulky due to the free space propagation. Various subwavelength sized probes have been developed to realize high resolution. However the tiny probes often suffer from high loss. A flexible metallic polarization-maintaining (PM) hollow waveguides with elliptical cross section is investigated and fabricated. The waveguide is used for transmitting linearly polarized terahertz (THz) radiation and flexible imaging. Bore size of the waveguide is on the order of wavelength. Transmission loss is as low as 0.92 dB/m. High birefringence of 0.08 and measured polarization ratio of 97.2% are achieved by the waveguide at 100 GHz. Moreover, a scanning 100 GHz imaging system is established by using the waveguide as a flexible probe. The PM capability of the fabricated waveguide brings benefits compared to conventional non-PM circular waveguide. The linearly polarized fundamental modes are easily excited and can be propagated through the fabricated waveguides to one meter away with polarization maintenance, which results in compressing of output beam and realizes a high resolution. A resolution better than λ/3 is achieved. It is further experimentally verified that the waveguide is robust to bending and twisting deformation, and maintained the imaging quality during flexible imaging. A subwavelength bore-sized single-polarization single-mode waveguide is also fabricated to simultaneously achieve high horizontal and vertical resolutions. The discussed waveguide is easy to fabricate and may find important applications in THz microscopy and flexible polarization imaging.

Abstract:We propose a novel flexible and stretchable terahertz waveguide by 3D printing to guide radiation from terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) lasing at the frequency of 2.58 THz. Composite silver nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane are coated on the inner surface of the 3D-printed polycarbonate/rubber substrate tube. The experimental results show that the transmission loss is similar to 0.22 dB/cm for the waveguide with a 4 mm-bore diameter. Both transmission spectra and output beam profile out from the waveguide demonstrate single-mode characteristics. Importantly, preeminent mechanical stability and stretchability of the 3D-printed terahertz waveguide are verified, which lead to broad applications in stretchable and ultra-flexible terahertz devices.

Abstract:Flexible gradually tapered metal waveguides (GTMWs) are fabricated by an inner plating silver film in a polycarbonate (PC) capillary for the transmission and imaging at 0.3 THz. It was demonstrated theoretically and experimentally that GTMWs have lower transmission losses and smaller additional losses of bending, comparing with thin constant bore metal waveguides (CBMWs). Measured losses of 1.95 dB and 2.45 dB were obtained for a 1 m long GTMW with bore size varying from 2.6 mm to 1.6 mm under straight and one circle bending configuration. Measured losses were 4.48 dB/m and 7.78 dB/m for 1.6 mm bore CBMW under the same straight and bend configurations. Owing to higher energy concentration at the output, a larger penetration ability of output wave can be achieved by GTMW, which is beneficial for imaging application. A scanning imaging system was established using fabricated waveguides as the probes. Measured results show that the air slits of the order of wavelength can be clearly distinguished. An imaging system with a GTMW probe also has better performances due to lower bending loss and improved coupling efficiency.

Abstract:Big-bore and flexible waveguides are fabricated for Terahertz wave transmission based on the structure of dielectric-coated metallic hollow waveguides.The liquid-phase coating technique for the dielectric film innercoating is modified and improved for the large-bore waveguides.The dielectric film thickness and the loss spectrum are the oretically and experimentally discussed.The experimental system is established to evaluate the transmission loss,additional bending attenuation,and output beam profile of the Terahertz (THz) waveguides at the frequency of 2.5 THz.According to the measured results,the transmission loss and additional bending attenuation are both decreased as the dielectric film thickness increases in the THz waveguides,while the energy distribution of beam profiles tends to focus on lower transmission modes.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual cylindrical metallic grating-cladding polymer hollow terahertz waveguide is proposed for the transmission of a wavelength range between 100 μm and 1.5 mm with low loss. The waveguide is comprised of copper cylindrical gratings embedded in both sides of hollow high-density polyethylene tubing. Numerical calculation shows that the dual cylindrical metallic grating-cladding polymer hollow waveguide can guide terahertz waves in the central air core with excellent mode qualities, and experimental results confirm that the attenuation constant of linear polarization HE11 mode can be reduced to 0.62 dB/m.
Exploring the Effectiveness of Thin Microwave Absorber Applied in Parallel-Plate Waveguide

Abstract:This work explores the effectiveness of the conventional thin microwave absorber (MA) applied in the parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG). The simulation results reveal that, the MA designed for absorbing the normally incident wave in the free space also suits the PPWG application when the thickness of the PPWG t <= 0.25 lambda(0). A segment of the MA with 0.5 lambda(0) length could bring similar to 10 dB electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression in the PPWG with t similar to 0.25 lambda(0), at the designed working frequency of the MA. While in the thin PPWG (t < 0.25 lambda(0)), the MA exhibits larger EMI suppression magnitude and bandwidth. Based on these discoveries, the MA design difficulties for the practical engineering scenes, such as multi-layered printed circuit boards and high-speed circuits' packages, are discussed to provide a valuable reference.

Abstract:Emerged terahertz transmission waveguides or fibers will enable novel terahertz systems and applications. High-quality output beam profiles, mechanical flexibility and reliability are among the most crucial and challenging characteristics of terahertz transmission waveguides. Here, we design and fabricate the flexible and stretchable transmission waveguides by 3D printing to guide radiation from terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) lasing at the frequency of 2.58 THz. Composite silver nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane are coated on the inner surface of the 3D-printed polycarbonate/rubber substrate tube. Output beam profiles from the transmission waveguides, which are captured by a room-temperature terahertz camera, demonstrate single-mode spatial intensity distribution. Transmission spectra are measured out from the waveguides and single-mode characteristics of THz QCLs are preserved from threshold to peak bias. More than 300 times of bending and force-strain curves are tested for the 3D-printed flexible terahertz transmission waveguides, the propagation losses exhibit no obvious change, demonstrating a superior mechanical endurance.
Investigation of Transmission Losses in a Dielectric Slab Waveguide at Terahertz Frequencies

Abstract:In this paper, a theoretical analysis of transmission losses for the TE, TM modes of a dielectric slab waveguide at terahertz frequencies is performed. Equations are presented for the field components, dispersion characteristics, core power confinement factor and attenuation constant as a function of the operating frequencies, waveguide dimensions and material constants. The calculation curves covering frequencies and dimensions for the given material constants in the THz region are presented. The investigation results show that, the loss of the slab waveguide increases at a rate proportional to approximately f, which is much slower than that of rectangular metallic waveguide and the microstrip line at a rate proportional to approximately f3/2. By selecting proper dimensions and dielectric materials, the dielectric slab waveguide can be used to guide THz wave efficiently with high power confinement. These properties may have some potential applications in the THz regime.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) circular photonic crystal fiber (CPCF) with the similar distribution of air holes as that in variable-size circular photonic crystal in polyethylene material was introduced. Guiding and dispersion properties of the CPCF with different parameters have been accurately computed. Results show that the CPCF is a useful terahertz waveguide which has good ability to confine THz fields, low group-velocity dispersion parameter and low relative dispersion slope. Furthermore, the polyethylene material that is transparent to terahertz wave is inexpensive and easy to operate.

Abstract:In this paper, terahertz monolithic integrated waveguide (TMIW) transmission lines (TLs) are analyzed and fabricated based on wide bandgap semiconductor materials. The ignored parameters of TLs at low frequencies, such as the via-hole shape, the titanium/gold thickness and roughness, and the micropipe effect of material, are especially investigated based on the semiconductor fabrication technique and the terahertz-wave theory. Subsequently, the fine optimized TMIW-TL and the transition to grounded coplanar waveguide are fabricated. The measurement shows that the attenuation constant of a TL is as low as 0.19 dB/λg at 220 GHz. The proposed TMIW can provide electrical performance similar to the conventional air-filled waveguide, while it has only 10% of the volume, which indicates a great potential for future terahertz integrated systems.

Abstract:A novel anti-resonant fiber for low-loss terahertz waveguides is proposed and analyzed. The terahertz fiber uses high-resistivity silicon as the bulk material and nine nested double-layer concentric circular tubes in the cladding to reduce propagation losses. The effects of the geometric parameters on the propagation characteristics are analyzed by the finite element method. The result indicates that an ultra-low total loss of 4.9×10 −4 dB/m is achieved at f =1THz. The low-loss propagation window is 0.48 THz ranging from 0.6 to 1.4 THz. In addition, the influence of mechanical bending on the propagation loss is investigated and the bending loss can be maintained at less than 7.3×10 −3 dB/m at f =1THz even if the bending radius is larger than 60 cm. The properties of this anti-resonant fiber are significantly superior to those of previously reported structures and the fiber thus has large commercial potential.

Abstract:We achieved 30 Gb/s error-free transmission using 140 cm-long flexible multimode polymer waveguides link with a measured bandwidth of 42 GHz·m. Bandwidth degradation is negligible under a bending radius of 1 mm with 3-turn twists.
