Abstract:Poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) is an emerging biobased polyester well-known for high gas barrier properties as well as high tensile modulus and strength, but PEF modification is still desired to improve its crystallization rate, toughness and even strength. In this study, PEF/Montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were in-situ synthesized via melt polycondensation of dimethyl furandicarboxylate and ethylene glycol in the presence of a commercially available organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT), i.e., DK2, a montmorillonite clay modified with octadecyl hydroxyethyl dimethyl ammonium. The structure of nanocomposites was characterized by ATR-FTIR , H-1 NMR, WAXD and TEM, and their thermal and mechanical properties were assessed with DSC, TGA and tensile test. The OMMT was grafted with PEF chains and therefore exfoliated, at least partially, in the PEF matrix with intrinsic viscosity over 0.7 dL/g. With respect to pristine PEF, the nanocomposites containing 2.5 wt% DK2 showed significantly improved melt crystallization, tensile modulus and strength.

Abstract:Due to respect for the environment and the search for more sustainable materials, scientists have started in recent decades to launch studies on bio-composite materials. It is well known that building materials are among the most commonly used materials and have an obvious negative impact on the environment. The development of environmentally friendly composites as insulating materials in buildings offers practical solutions to reduce energy consumption. Therefore, this work presents the use of a new bio-composite material composed of natural fibers, date palm fibers, cement, and sand. In addition, the study on the effect of adding date palm fibers on the thermo-mechanical characteristics of mortars assesses the thermal insulation properties as well as the water absorption and mechanical performance of this new bio-composite material to use it in the construction of buildings. The percentage by weight of date palm fiber in the test samples varied from 0% to 30% for a fiber size of length equal to 7 mm. The characteristics of these samples were determined experimentally in terms of resistance to bending and compression as well as thermal conductivity. The results show that while increasing the weight of date palm fiber, an obviously reduction in thermal conductivity, flexural, and compressive strength of the composite is observed. Hence, date palm fiber has a positive effect on the thermo-mechanical properties of the composite material. Therefore, it considerably improves the insulating capacity of the mortar.

Abstract:In recent decades, scientists have started to search for more sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. The results confirmed that the thermal conductivity decreases with the addition of DPF. Also, the compressive strength of the composite decreases with the weight reduction. Thus, DPF has a positive effect on the thermo-mechanical properties of the considered material. Consequently, it considerably improves the mortar insulating capacity.

Abstract:The utilization of environmentally friendly composite materials for building insulation offers a practical solution to reducing energy consumption. This study explores the application of novel biocomposites, comprising cement, sand, treated (DPFT) and raw (DPF) date palm fibers and their influence on the thermal and mechanical properties of mortars. The samples were prepared with varying weight percentages of date palm fibers (0%− 20%), treated with NaOH, and possessing a fiber length of 7 mm. Water absorption, density, resistance to bending and compression, thermal conductivity and diffusivity were encompassed. The results indicate that incorporating treated fibers has a beneficial effect on the thermal and mechanical properties of the composite when compared to using raw fibers. Additionally, higher proportions of DPF lead to decreased thermal conductivity, diffusivity, and resistance to bending and compression, highlighting the positive impact of DPFT on the composite’s thermal and mechanical attributes. Notably, the treated fiber composite significantly enhances the insulation capacity of the mortar.

Abstract:Date palm fibers have been studied as potential reinforcement in composite materials. Their density is equal to 1.22 g.cm −3 ; making them suitable for use in lightweight applications. In order to efficiently use these fibers and understand their mechanical properties, quasi-static tensile tests and cyclic fiber fatigue tests were performed to determine the mechanical properties. Their internal structure, elementary fibers and porosity were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the mechanical properties are clearly improved by taking into account the porosity by calculating the real section of the fibers by using the imageJ software a cross-sectional pore fraction of the fibers has been determined and the ultimate properties of the pore-free bulky fibers has been calculated with stress and Young's modulus increased by approx. 54% as compared to the highly porous natural fibers.

Abstract:The potential of using date palm leaflet (DPL) as a green composite reinforcement in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region was investigated in this study. An experimental study was conducted on two specific varieties of date palm, Deglat Noor and Mch Deglat, from Bouchagroune, Mekhadma and Lichana, Biskra, Algeria. A series of analyses were carried out, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, to evaluate the physical properties of the fibres, including bulk and absolute densities, specific porosity, and detailed morphological characteristics. Additionally, the chemical composition of these fibres was meticulously examined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thermal properties were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results revealed the unique microstructural features of date palm fibres, such as a roughly cylindrical shape interspersed with threads, cells, and pores. Analyses demonstrated that date palm powder was a low-density and porous material comprising mainly carbon, oxygen, and silicon. These elements were responsible for various functional groups, including hydroxyl (O–H), hydrocarbon (C–H), and carbonyl (C–O), and confirmed the presence of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin. The thermal stability of these fibres highlighted their potential as reinforcing materials in high-temperature applications. Therefore, this study suggested that these fibres were promising candidates for improving a range of materials in various fields due to their unique structural, chemical, and thermal properties. These conclusions contribute to the optimal management of biowastes through innovation and the development of materials.

Abstract:Dry grass is a widespread residue of agricultural activities in Morocco. This paper investigates the effect of incorporating this organic waste on the Physicochemical and Thermomechanical performance of unfired clay bricks. The used raw clay material used is of illite type, extracted from Bensmim in the Ifrane region. Various grass filler proportions (0 %, 1 %, 3 %, 7 %, 15 %, and 20 %) were used. Collected findings showed an increase in the porosity level reaching 14.75 % at 20 % additive content compared to 1.75 % of reference samples. In addition, brick samples with 20 % dry grass content reflected a bulk density of 1.52 g·cm −3 and water absorption coefficient of 52.25 g·cm −2 ·min 0.5 ), compared to reference samples of 1.77 g·cm −3 and 26.15 g·cm −2 ·min −0.5 ), respectively. This reflects prominent lightweight properties. Mechanical and thermal conducted tests reflect a decrease in both compressive strength and thermal conductivity with grass reinforcement incorporation compared to reference values. In fact, a 48 % gain in thermal conductivity is observed with a decrease from 0.53 W·m −1 ·K −1 for reference samples, to 0.27 W·m −1 ·K −1 at the 20 % mark. Bricks with dry grass filler reflected an acceptable compressive strength as well as a significant improvement in insulation properties, enabling great energy saving and contributing to sustainable buildings with good mechanical functioning.

The choice of these fibers types is aimed at the recovery of agricultural waste in Tunisia. Their exploitation serves to improve the mechanical and physical properties of a new material dedicated to filling and insulation in buildings. In this context, series of tests were carried out using untreated short fibers in lightweight concrete. The evaluation of the mechanical and physical behavior of the material was obtained by determining the compressive strength, bending strength and thermal conductivity. The results obtained showed the influence of the fibers volume fraction. For mechanical behavior, the optimum of fibers volume fraction was estimated at 1% for lightweight concrete with date palm and sisal fibers. The thermal conductivity is inversely proportional to the fibers volume fraction, which justifies the use of this composite as a filling and insulation material.
Cement kiln dust-based geopolymer: Microstructural investigation and performances optimization through response surface methodology

Abstract:Cement kiln dust (CKD), which consisted of mullite, quartz, fused silica, and calcite (49, 23, 11, and 10 mass%, respectively) was alkali-activated ([NaOH]: 4–12 M) and cured under different conditions (25 ≤ T ≤ 85 °C, time (t): up to 30 days). The microstructure of the cured samples was investigated using X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical/physical properties of the cured samples were related to the above factors using response surface methodology. The results showed that increasing the levels of these factors enhanced the reactivity of mullite and quartz, leading thus to the formation of hydrosodalite along with geopolymer. Conversely, a pseudo-amorphous phase along with a limited amount of geopolymer occurred with lower levels of the factors. Moreover, samples prepared with concentrated solutions of NaOH or cured at high temperatures were the object of the formation of zeolite ZK, and semi-crystallized hydroxysodalite, respectively. Tobermorite and hydroxysodalite were formed at long and short curing times, respectively. The mechanical/physical properties of the cured samples were well related to the operating factors through quadratic models, and their changes were discussed in relation to the microstructure characterization. The results of the desirability approach demonstrated that the optimal values for bending strength, compressive strength, porosity, and water absorption (10.4 MPa, 9.1 MPa, 16.4%, and 28%, respectively) are obtained at: [NaOH] = 10 M, T = 73 °C, and t = 23 days. In light of these results, the CKD is suitable as a binder for mortar and bricks.

Abstract:This study aims to use natural carbonated Tunisian clay as an aluminosilicate precursor for the elaboration of phosphate-based geopolymers, which yields to the valorization of this common material in Tunisia. In addition, the presence of calcium carbonate in this clay allows the investigation of this associated mineral's effect on the properties of geopolymeric materials. To achieve these purposes, several experimental techniques were used, namely fluorescence (FX), particle size analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), dilatometric analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical strength and the open porosity of the obtained geopolymeric samples were tested by the compression test and the standard test method for water absorption, respectively. The findings of this work show that the used Tunisian clay can present an attractive aluminosilicate precursor for the synthesis of phosphate-based geopolymers. It also shows that the chosen calcination temperature of the raw clay considerably modifies the reactivity of minerals during geopolymerization and, consequently, strongly affects the properties and structure of the geopolymeric samples. These effects were attributed essentially to the formation of new calcium crystalline phases in the obtained geopolymeric samples. In fact, the anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8) phase appears in all the samples but in greater abundance in those obtained from the clay calcined at 550 °C, and the brushite phase (CaHPO4·2H2O) appears only in the samples obtained from the clay calcined at 950 °C. All these new crystalline phases are strongly dependent on the state of the calcite present in the calcined clay.

Abstract:The present paper focuses on the elaboration and characterization of akermanite-rich bioceramics from abundantly available local dolomite and perlite. Different mixtures have been prepared for low-cost ceramic manufacturing by uniaxial pressing method and firing at 1250 °C for 2 h. The obtained results showed that akermanite is the predominant crystalline phase through the addition of natural perlite for a maximum of 30% in weight, accompanied by some small traces of diopside and periclase. The experimental results indicated that the sample M2-B (25 wt% of perlite) is the optimized body from all the tested specimens. The optimized ceramic was subjected to an SBF test to evaluate the bioactivity of the sample, and experimentally the combination between the microstructural and the mineralogical composition of the obtained material after soaking in SBF solution has confirmed the quality of the developed bioceramic by the formation of apatite layer.
Extraction and Characterization of Nanocellulose from Waste of Date Palm “Phoenix Dactylifera” as Reinforcement of Polymer Composites

Abstract:Cellulose is the most abundant and renewable polymer in nature. It is characterized by its biodegradability which helps create a friendly environment. This study seeks to describe the nanocellulose obtained from waste date palm, within the dried palms (DP) and the fresh palms (FP) through implementing chemical methods (hydrolysis with H2SO4). Physical properties, morphology, the elemental composition and the thermal stability were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), zeta sizer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), whereas energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. FTIR, SEM and EDX results revealed the effective removal of impurities, hemicellulose and lignin. After treatment, the dried palm (DR) samples contained 35.99% of cellulose and 33.12% of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), while fresh palm (FP) samples 36.17% of cellulose and 34.35% of CNC. The CNCs have higher crystallinity than the raw fibers and Zeta sizer was between 25 and 1150 nm. TGA analysis showed that DP demonstrated noticeable thermal resistance.

Abstract:Sustainable bio-materials are now potential alternatives for synthetic composites to achieve more functional green products. However, the microstructure-performance synergy is critical in such materials. In this work, the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and morphological analysis of the date palm polypropylene composites are investigated. Various reinforcement conditions, chemical treatments, surface topology, thermogravimetric analysis, and its derivative were utilized to explore the relation of the microstructure with the composite performance. Date palm leaflets (DPLs) were treated with sodium hydroxide at various conditions to determine the optimal samples. Morphological analysis was also performed. Results reveal that this treatment improves the tensile strength and modulus of the composites. Moreover, DPL fibers have positive impacts on both tensile and flexural modulus. At 30 wt% of DPL fibers, the fibers scored the highest values. Both TGA and DTG analyses show that DPL fibers can withstand a temperature up to 227 °C. Also, TG-DTG thermograms show that the addition of DPL fibers has enhanced the thermal stability of polypropylene composites. Scanning electron microscope enhanced our understanding of the composite performance trends towards assessing their capabilities for more reliable implementations of more sustainable green products.

Abstract:In this approach, nanocomposites of PVDF/PMMA/CTAMag films have been successfully synthesized. Modified Maghnite was used as inorganic reinforcement. In this study, nanocomposite polymers were developed based on a mixed matrix of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) of composition (80/20 w/w) in dispersion containing 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 wt % fillers of organomodified montmorillonite nanoclay (CTAMag) in the melt state. The results obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), XRD traces and FTIR spectra highlighted the homogeneous flexible character of the PVDF/PMMA/CTAMag films and their intercalated and intercalated/exfoliated surface morphology, in addition to the presence of PVDF α , β and γ phase crystallites in these complex films. The increased presence of the modified clay in the host matrix of the PVDF/PMMA blend significantly influenced the melting temperature and the degree of crystallinity of the PVDF crystallites. The scattering of the dielectric spectra, which covers a wide range of frequencies from 20 Hz to 1 GHz, indicates the presence of the phenomenon of interfacial polarization associated with the dielectric capacitance complex at lower frequencies in these composites at 27 °C. The mechanical properties of these composites were evaluated as a function of the load and the mixed matrix of these composites.

Abstract:The research article aims to investigate the hygroscopic behavior of water absorbed by capillarity in clay supplemented with Alfa fibers. This specific clay-fiber composite holds significant importance in Moroccan construction practices. The primary aim is to enhance comprehension and control over the material's hydrothermal behavior by investigating moisture absorption traits, responses to varying humidity and temperature conditions, and the influence of fiber reinforcement on moisture equilibrium and structural stability. As temperature levels rise, the equilibrium water content absorbed through capillarity demonstrates a downward trend. The introduction of Kaolin-Alfa fibers into the clay composite profoundly affects the pace at which equilibrium moisture content is lost. This attribute effectively mitigates the likelihood of cracks developing in earthen structures during the drying phase, as it uniformly disperses tensions resulting from shrinkage. The findings showed that by understanding its unique region, Predictions regarding the sorption tendencies of other building materials are possible because of the approximate estimation of Clay-Kaolin reinforced with Alfa fibers sorption behavior. Surface flaws arise on Clay-Kaolin reinforced with Alfa fibers as a result of rising average pore radius and spreading pressure brought on by rising temperature and relative humidity. Abstract:Combined modulus and impedance spectra are employed in the present work to explore electrical inhomogeneity and carriers’ behaviors in a pure bentonite Moroccan clay based on equivalent circuit. It has been clearly observed that the electrical properties change due to the increase of temperature from 300 °C to 700 °C. The frequency-dependent imaginary modulus M" and imaginary impedance Z" curves has only one peak at each temperature indicating the predominance of the contribution of grains to the total electrical conduction in bentonite. The positions of these peaks move to higher frequencies when the temperature increases in relation with the distribution of relaxation time. Moreover, the activation energy for the conduction process in bentonite is determined from the slope of ln(ρdc) versus of 1/T in the order of 700 meV in good agreement with that obtained from the proposed equivalent circuit. On the other hand, let’s present a geotechnical study that show that our material is a swelling clay, very plastic and could be used as a binder. The external stress dependence of the bulk density, Young’s module and maximum stress are analysed. The thermal conductivity determined following the device of Lee's disks where two copper disks of thickness of 15 mm and diameter of 30 mm were used

Abstract:The identification of natural clay deposit parameters is critical for the development of ceramics. This research underscores the essential role of understanding clay properties in producing high‐quality ceramics and represents a comprehensive characterization methodology, shedding light on the untapped potential of natural clay deposits for ceramic applications. This study investigates red clays from the Triassic, as well as yellow and gray clays from the Cretaceous period, collected from the western High Atlas of Morocco (Ameskroud). The characterization of clays from this geographic region is innovative, as they have not been previously investigated for their suitability within ceramic applications. The investigation encompasses an examination of the geological context, mineralogy, chemical composition, and physicochemical attributes of these clays. Furthermore, the thermal behavior, firing characteristics, and compressive strength of the clay samples were assessed when fired at 900°C, 1000°C, and 1100°C. Mineralogical analysis reveals that illite predominates with relatively low levels of kaolinite and chlorite. The primary chemical constituent is SiO 2 , followed by Al 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 . Notably, yellow clay exhibits a significant CaO content exceeding 10%. At 1100°C, the clay specimens exhibit reduced water absorption rates (ranging from 9.88% to 17.1%) and enhanced mechanical performance, with compressive strengths ranging from 22.33 MPa to 36.07 MPa, attributable to the sintering process. The findings affirm that the raw clays sourced from the Ameskroud region possess characteristics suitable for various ceramic applications, making them ideal candidates for the production of dense bricks and ceramic tiles.

Abstract:Decarbonizing the construction industry is an important step towards achieving the net-zero goals for many countries. New technologies and materials are extensively investigated and proposed to meet sustainability guidelines imposed by governments. This research develops a novel mix of sustainable pozzolanic cementitious composite ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS)) reinforced with date palm fibre (DPF) to evaluate the effect of varying DPF loading contents (1, 2, and 3 wt.%) and lengths (10, 20, 30, and 40 mm) on the mechanical (compressive and flexural strength) and physical properties (water absorption) of the produced composite. The effect of curing conditions and DPF surface modification on the mechanical and physical properties was also explored. The results showed that the utilization of DPF as a reinforcement for GGBS/OPC improves the flexural and compressive strength of the composites, which represents a sustainable alternative to synthetic reinforcements for construction applications. Optimal results were demonstrated at the inclusion of 20-mm alkali-treated DPF at a loading content of 1 wt.% showing an enhancement in strength by 57.12% and 30.97% of flexural and compressive strength, respectively, at 28 days of ageing in a water bath.
