Abstract:The temperature dependence of strain and strain rate of the Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 (Vit1) bulk metallic glass (BMG) under constant heating condition was derived from the static extension method with a dynamic thermal mechanical analyzer (DMA). A few strain rate peaks, which corresponds to the glass transition and multistep crystallization in the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) examination, were observed in the curves of the relation between strain rate and temperature. The onset of viscous flow and the end of glass transition are interrelated, the first and second strain rate peaks correspond with the first and second crystallization transition processes, respectively. The influence of stress on strain and strain rate was researched. It is found that the rheological behaviour of BMG Vit1 changes from elasticity to anelasticity, finally to the Newtonian viscous flow along with increasing temperature.

Abstract:In current work, the mechanical behavior of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass at elevated temperatures (from 423 to 683 K) under high strain rate (from 5000 to 104 s−1) is investigated by an improved split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus. Experimental results reveal that the failure stress goes down along with elevated temperature, while the strain rate dependency is relatively small. Furthermore, three different fracture modes are observed along with elevated temperature by scanning electron microscope (SEM). SEM observation results also indicate that the fractured specimen has been crystallized at temperature near Tg and the embrittlement caused by crystallization is attributed to the fracture mode changing.

Abstract:Tensile rheological behavior of the Zr35Ti30Be27·5Cu7.5 metallic glass under conditions of high strain rates (strain rates ranging from 0.05 s−1 to 0.5 s−1) within the supercooled liquid region was studied. The stress-strain curve reveals that this metallic glass demonstrates non-Newtonian flow characteristics under these circumstances. The peak stress associated with stress overshoot increases as temperature decreases and strain rate increases. However, the steady-state flow stress displays an anomalous decrease due to rapid necking at high strain rates. Subsequently, the thermal processing map of the Zr35Ti30Be27·5Cu7.5 metallic glass was established and analyzed. It reveals that the alloy has relatively excellent thermoplastic forming ability at temperature between 630 K and 655 K and strain rates between 0.05 s−1-0.2 s−1. We found that under strain rates ε ˙ ≥ 10 − 2 s − 1 , the strain rate is the primary factor influencing normalized viscosity. Therefore, we developed a simplified Maxwell-Pulse constitutive model applicable to metallic glass in the supercooled liquid region under high strain rate conditions, by simplifying the constitutive equation for steady-state flow stress using a simplified formula for normalized viscosity calculation. The predictions of this simplified modified model align well with experimental values. By comparing the simplified and unsimplified Maxwell-Pulse constitutive models, the overall fitting accuracy of the simplified model was improved by 3–5%, with the highest improvement of 67% in the steady-state flow stress stage. These results indicate that the modified model accurately reflects the stress-strain relationship for the Zr35Ti30Be27·5Cu7.5 metallic glass under high temperature and high strain rate tensile conditions.

Abstract:Tensile tests were performed on Cu64Zr36 metallic glass at strain rates of 107/s, 108/s, and 109/s via classical molecular dynamics simulations to explore the underlying mechanism by which strain rate affects deformation behavior. It was found that strain rate has a great impact on the deformation behavior of metallic glass. The higher the strain rate is, the larger the yield strength. We also found that the strain rate changes the atomic structure evolution during deformation, but that the difference in the atomic structure evolution induced by different strain rates is not significant. However, the mechanical response under deformation conditions is found to be significantly different with the change in strain rate. The average von Mises strain of a system in the case of 107/s is much larger than that of 109/s. In contrast, more atoms tend to participate in deformation with increasing strain rate, indicating that the strain localization degree is more significant in cases of lower strain rates. Therefore, increasing the strain rate reduces the degree of deformation heterogeneity, leading to an increase in yield strength. Further analysis shows that the structural features of atomic clusters faded out during deformation as the strain rate increased, benefiting more homogeneous deformation behavior. Our findings provide more useful insights into the deformation mechanisms of metallic glass.

Abstract:In this work, we investigated the mechanical behavior of a low-cost Zr51.9Cu23.3Ni10.5Al14.3 (at. %) metallic glass ribbon prepared with industrial-grade material through the melt-spinning method. The ribbons have good appearances and almost no defects. The mechanical behavior associated with the corresponding microstructure of the ribbon was tested at different strain rates. Striation and veining patterns were observed in the crack propagation zone and the fast fracture zone. The results show that the tensile strength of the ribbons exceeds 1 GPa. Therefore, they are considered to have good potential for industrial applications. This study could contribute to the preparation of low-cost bulk metallic glass.

Abstract:The interfacial friction behaviour of Zr35Ti30Be26.75Cu8.25 metallic glass during micro-extrusion was investigated at various strain rates and temperatures in the supercooled liquid region. A friction mechanism map that distributes adhesion regime, furrow regime and mechanical engagement regime was constructed. These regimes respectively correspond to Newtonian flow, non-Newtonian flow and inhomogeneous flow by comparing with the typical deformation map. The correlation between flow characteristics and interfacial friction behaviour is well analysed by combining the viscosity theory with the finite-element simulations.

Abstract:Based on the analyses of the influences of temperature and pressure on diffusion behavior with time, a Zr-based bulk metallic glass is successfully bonded in its supercooled liquid region. The temperature is found to be a key factor for the success of the bonding process if sufficient pressure and time are adopted. Three-point bending tests show that the flexural performance of the samples bonded with various parameters is significantly different. The parameters in favor of diffusion bonding do not automatically benefit the performance of the bonded materials. Diffusion makes the nano-voids shrink to form metallurgical bonding at the interface and it causes structural relaxation leading to the embrittlement inside bulk. Balance between the two aspects is the key to the bonding success and the utility of the bonded materials.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of applied stress on mechanical properties in metallic glasses, nanoindentation tests were conducted on elastically bent Zr-Cu-Ag-Al metallic glasses with two different structure states. From spherical P-h curves, elastic modulus was found to be independent on applied stress. Hardness decreased by ~8% and ~14% with the application of 1.5% tensile strain for as-cast and 650 K annealed specimens, while it was slightly increased at the compressive side. Yield stress could be obtained from the contact pressure at first pop-in position with a conversion coefficient. The experimental result showed a symmetrical effect of applied stress on strengthening and a reduction of the contact pressure at compressive and tensile sides. It was observed that the applied stress plays a negligible effect on creep deformation in as-cast specimen. While for the annealed specimen, creep deformation was facilitated by applied tensile stress and suppressed by applied compressive stress. Strain rate sensitivities (SRS) were calculated from steady-state creep, which were constant for as-cast specimen and strongly correlated with applied stress for the annealed one. The more pronounced effect of applied stress in the 650 K annealed metallic glass could be qualitatively explained through the variation of the shear transformation zone (STZ) size.

Abstract:Both the effects of temperature and strain rate on the deformation behavior of metallic glass thin films (Ni60Nb40, Cu44Zr44Al12 and Zr55Cu15Ni13Al17) were systematically investigated. The evolution of surface morphology of magnetron sputtered thin films co-bent with the Ti substrate was monitored. A transition from highly localized deformation to non-localized deformation was observed at various temperatures and strain rates by reducing the film thickness to a critical thickness, which can be understood on the basis of Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, Griffith’s crack-propagation criterion and elastic energy transferring efficiency of the material. Temperature and strain rate dependence of the critical thickness for transition are discussed to shed light on the deformation mechanism of glassy thin films.

Abstract:The dynamic uniaxial compressive behavior of Zr-based metallic glasses under a wide high strain rate was studied by a miniaturized split Hopkinson pressure bar, including high strain rate up to 10^4 s^−1. Experimental results indicate that the uniaxial compressive failure stress would decrease suddenly and then tend to hold steady with increasing strain rate. This phenomenon provides a generalized perspective for understanding the effect of local heat generation on the deformation of metallic glasses under dynamic loads.

Abstract:To explore the relationship between mold temperature and the formation of large-size metallic glasses, the influence of mold temperature on the solidification process and microstructure evolution of amorphous melts was investigated. It was found that increasing the mold temperature to 623 K contributes to improving the solidification time from ∼1.79 s to ∼2.32 s without affecting the solidification behavior of amorphous melt. However, the duration of the supercooled liquid state was prolonged by the excessively high mold temperature, resulting in a considerable increase in the glass transition time from ∼12.78 s to ∼145.7 s and a decline in the cooling rate from 27.6 K/s to 2.1 K/s, which ultimately leads to the crystallization of the sample. In addition, it has been observed that the 573 K mold temperature is not only the optimal mold temperature to ensure the amorphous nature of the sample but is also beneficial to improve the internal temperature gradient of the sample, thereby reducing the risk of deformation or cracking. Appropriate control of mold temperature can provide valuable guidance for large-size amorphous castings and associated process parameters.

Abstract:The glass-forming ability, stress-strain relationships, and fracture characteristics of Zr 60- x Cu 27 Al 8 Fe 5 Y x ( x =1, 3 and 5 at%) bulk metallic glasses are investigated under compressive strain rates ranging from 10 −3 to 4 × 10 3 s −1 using a material testing system and split-Hopkinson pressure bar. The results show that yttrium addition leads to a broader supercooled liquid region (Δ T x ) and a greater γ parameter ( γ = T x /( T g + T l )), particularly for x = 1 at%. For all of the tested alloys, the fracture stress increases with increasing strain rate, while the fracture strain decreases. The addition of 3 at% Y results in the highest fracture stress and an improved fracture strain. The fracture surface observations show that the fracture behavior of the BMGs is dominated by the strain rate, whereas the Y content plays only a minor role.

Abstract:Pre-straining was carried out on a CuZrAl bulk metallic glass (BMG), in order to understand the physical correlation between its structural heterogeneity and nano-mechanical performance. As the pre-strain increases, the studied glass remains its amorphous structure whereas the degree of local order firstly decreases and then increases, yielding a minimum value at 10 % pre-strain, and the Helmholtz activation energy (ΔF*), shear transformation zone (STZ) volume, number of atoms in the STZ (N), and the nanohardness value exhibits a similar trend. The variation in the structure and thus mechanical performance induced by pre-straining has been interpreted from the viewpoint of free volume concept. The results obtained here can be beneficial for tailoring the structure and the corresponding mechanical properties of BMGs.

Abstract:The dependence of shear yield strain, the activation energy and volume of shear transformation zone on the glass transition temperature was investigated through the analysis of statistical distributions of the first pop-in events during spherical indentation of four different thin film metallic glasses. Only the Cu–Zr metallic glass exhibits a bimodal distribution of the first pop-in loads, whereas W–Ru–B, Zr–Cu–Ni–Al and La–Co–Al metallic glasses show an unimodal distribution. Results show that shear yield strain and activation energy of shear transformation zone decrease whereas the volume of shear transformation zone increases with increasing homologous temperature, indicating that it is the activation energy rather than the volume of shear transformation zone that controls shear yield strain.

Abstract:Using Cu-Zr models, we demonstrate icosahedral ordering as a microscopic origin of the non-Arrhenius dynamical slowing down in metallic supercooled liquids. This correlation between the structural and dynamical heterogeneities underlies the evolution of the energy barrier for relaxation upon undercooling, as well as the eventual glass transition that leads to the formation of bulk metallic glasses (MGs). Our analysis of the energy barrier to plastic relaxation in MGs relates their macroscopic strength and plasticity to the local structures developed in the MGs. The structure-dynamics perspective explains not only the composition-dependent mechanical properties but also the known correlation between the strength of MGs and the glass transition temperature.

Abstract:An outer ring of 29320 self-aliging roller bearing was used in an experimental study on the casting of Zr41Ti14Cu12.5Ni10Be22.5 amorphous alloy. Numerical simulations of mold filling and solidification processes were carried out to determine the velocity fields and temperature fields of the alloy melt during mold filling process as well as the temperature fields and temperature gradient fields in the course of the solidification. According to the results, a cast with a complete shape can be obtained at 1200 °C under the condition that the cooling rate is greater than the critical cooling rate. The ring-shaped part with a thickness of 25 mm, an equivalent diameter of 22 mm, and a mass of 1.32 kg was prepared by gravity casting in a copper mold. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry data revealed that the produced cast had the amorphous structure.

Effects of Crystallization Fractions on Mechanical Properties of Zr-based Metallic Glass Matrix Composites

Abstract:The Zr 41 Ti 14 Cu 12.5 Ni 10 Be 22.5 (at.%) bulk metallic glass composites with various crystallization fractions were prepared by pretreating the bulk metallic glassy samples with pulsing current, and then by isothermal annealing at near initial crystallization temperature for different periods of time. The precipitations and crystallization fractions were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and their effects on mechanical properties of the composite were studied by microhardness, uniaxial compression test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results show that the primary precipitate is quasicrystalline phase and other metastable phases including Be 2 Zr, Zr 2 Cu and FCC would precipitate subsequently. In the initial crystallization process, in which the crystallization fraction increases from 0 to 8.2%, both fracture strength and plastic strain increase, with the maximum plastic strain up to 6.4%. When the crystallization fraction is larger than 8.2%, the fracture strength and the plastic strain decrease sharply. Furthermore, the alloy with low crystallization fraction is fractured by shearing, while for high crystallization fraction it is fractured by splitting and cleavage. The results show that the mechanical properties of the glassy alloy could be optimized by controlling the processing parameters.

Abstract:The size-dependent microstructural evolution behavior has a significant impact on the thermoplastic flow behavior of metallic glass in the supercooled liquid region. In this work, double-cup extrusion tests, corresponding finite element method simulations and nanoindentation measurements of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 metallic glass samples with different sizes, are employed to study the relationship between the size-dependent free volume variations and thermoplastic flowability. Experimental results and theoretical analyses demonstrate that the free volume content increases with increasing sample size. The change tendencies of free volume content and micro-hardness are in a negative correlation. The variation regularity of extruded cup height ratio verifies that the thermoplastic flowability of Zr-based metallic glass is enhanced with rising sample size. Furthermore, the size-dependent free volume variations and distributions induced by internal microstructural evolution behaviors result in the evident variations of micromechanical properties. The results of this study will contribute to a more in-depth understanding of the size-dependent thermoplastic deformation behavior of Zr-based metallic glass.
The role of nano-scale elastic heterogeneity in mechanical and tribological behaviors of a Cu–Zr based metallic glass thin film

Abstract:<p>Despite its significance in fundamentally understanding mechanical behaviors of metallic glasses, the effect of elastic heterogeneity on plastic deformation and thereby nanotribological behavior of metallic glass thin films (MGTFs) remains an open question. By a combination of nano-scratch, nano-DMA and nanoindentation tests, we have investigated in the present work the room-temperature inhomogeneous plastic deformation behavior and nanotribological properties of Cu–Zr based MGTFs obtained by magnetron sputtering with different substrate temperatures. It is revealed that while the studied MGTF experiences a moderate rise of both hardness and Young's modulus with the elevating substrate temperature from 300 K to 473 K, its wear resistance significantly increases during the nano-scratch under a ramping load. More interestingly, through systematically studying the serration dynamics during the nano-scratch for MGTFs with different thermal history, we found that the increase of critical length scale for shear banding, which is well accompanied by the reduction of nano-scale elastic heterogeneity, tends to make shear banding more difficult in the amorphous structure, and thus enhance the wear resistance of the tested MGTFs. The current findings may provide a useful guidance to develop MGTFs with a superior mechanical and tribological properties via tuning their nanoscale elastic heterogeneity.</p>

Abstract:Physical correlation between structural heterogeneity and plastic flow of metallic glasses (MGs) is crucial for the understanding of MGs' deformation mechanism. In this work, different degrees of structural heterogeneity are introduced into Zr-based MGs through different cooling rates casting. The effect of structural heterogeneity on serrated flow behavior was studied. The findings demonstrate that there exists a tendency that serration flow dynamics of the MGs transforms from a chaotic state to a self-organized critical state with increased inhomogeneity. The established correlation between structural heterogeneity and serrated flow behavior shows that the higher degree of structural heterogeneity facilitates a higher frequency of interaction and multiplication of shear bands by increasing nucleation sites, and then promotes serrated flow behavior to be more homogeneous in time and space, thereby induces transformation of dynamics behavior and improves the plasticity. The obtained results shed light on deformation mechanism of plastic flow and provide a new insight into the plasticity of MGs.
