Abstract:The reaction behavior at the contact interfaces between cast steel or spheroidal graphite cast iron (SGCI) containing large amounts of manganese and molten aluminum alloys was investigated through shear testing of specimens prepared by holding contact between ferrous materials and molten aluminum alloys and then cooling. Specimens made of high-manganese SGCI and aluminum alloys exhibited a lower shear strength than those made of high-manganese cast steel and aluminum alloys, regardless of the silicon content in the aluminum alloys. In the specimens with high-manganese cast steel, interfacial delamination between the cast steel and intermetallic layers and/or delamination in the layers were observed. However, in specimens with high-manganese SGCI, there was mainly interfacial delamination between the aluminum alloys and intermetallic layers. In addition, although the weight of the high-manganese cast steel decreased with high-temperature holding due to oxide film delamination, the weight of the high-manganese SGCI increased with holding. Surface analyses of the high-manganese SGCI after high-temperature holding indicated the existence of an oxide film containing a large amount of manganese. This study concludes that high-manganese SGCI has a better soldering resistance than high-manganese cast steel because the oxide film, including manganese, prevents interfacial reactions with the molten aluminum alloys.
