Abstract:Background: In recent geometric design, many effective toolkits for geometric modeling and optimization have been proposed and applied in practical cases, while effective and efficient designing of shapes that have desirable topological properties remains to be a challenge. The development of computational topology, especially persistent homology, permits convenient usage of topological invariants in shape analysis, geometric modeling, and shape optimization. Persistence diagram, the useful topological summary of persistent homology, provides a stable representation of multiscale homology invariants in the presence of noise in original data. Recent works show the wide use of persistent homology tools in geometric design. Objective: In this paper, we review the geometric design based on computational topological tools in three aspects: the extraction of topological features and representations, topology-aware shape modeling, and topology-based shape optimization. Methods: By tracking the development of each aspect and comparing the methods using classical topological invariants, motivations, and key approaches of important related works based on persistent homology are clarified. Results : We review geometric design through topological extraction, topological design, and shape optimization based on topology preservation. Related works show the successful applications of computational topology tools of geometric design. Conclusion: Solutions for the proposed core problems will affect the geometric design and its applications. In the future, the development of computational topology may boost computer-aided topological design.

While the progress in these areas heavily depends on advances in computing hardware, the major intellectual achievements are the algorithms. The applications of general topology in other branches of mathematics are not discussed, since they are not applications of mathematics outside of mathematics.

Moreover, it covers several related topics that are in fact important in the overall scheme of algebraic topology. Comprising eighteen chapters and two appendices, the book integrates various concepts of algebraic topology, supported by examples, exercises, applications and historical notes. Primarily intended as a textbook, the book offers a valuable resource for undergraduate, postgraduate and advanced mathematics students alike. Focusing more on the geometric than on algebraic aspects of the subject, as well as its natural development, the book conveys the basic language of modern algebraic topology by exploring homotopy, homology and cohomology theories, and examines a variety of spaces: spheres, projective spaces, classical groups and their quotient spaces, function spaces, polyhedra, topological groups, Lie groups and cell complexes, etc. The book studies a variety of maps, which are continuous functions between spaces. There are various applications of topological data analysis in life and data sciences, with growing interest among physicists. We present a concise yet (we hope) comprehensive review of applications of topological data analysis to physics and machine learning problems in physics including the detection of phase transitions. Abstract:The book presents new results and applications of the topological derivative method in control theory, topology optimization and inverse problems. It also introduces the theory in singularly perturbed geometrical domains using selected examples. Recognized as a robust numerical technique in engineering applications, such as topology optimization, inverse problems, imaging processing, multi-scale material design and mechanical modeling including damage and fracture evolution phenomena, the topological derivative method is based on the asymptotic approximations of solutions to elliptic boundary value problems combined with mathematical programming tools. The book presents the first order topology design algorithm and its applications in topology optimization, and introduces the second order Newton-type reconstruction algorithm based on higher order topological derivatives for solving inverse reconstruction problems. It is intended for researchers and students in applied mathematics and computational mechanics interested in the mathematical aspects of the topological derivative method as well as its applications in computational mechanics.

This tutorial provides a comprehensive introduction to two key TML techniques, persistent homology and the Mapper algorithm, with an emphasis on practical applications. Persistent homology captures multi-scale topological features such as clusters, loops, and voids, while the Mapper algorithm creates an interpretable graph summarizing high-dimensional data. To enhance accessibility, we adopt a data-centric approach, enabling readers to gain hands-on experience applying these techniques to relevant tasks. We provide step-by-step explanations, implementations, hands-on examples, and case studies to demonstrate how these tools can be applied to real-world problems. The goal is to equip researchers and practitioners with the knowledge and resources to incorporate TML into their work, revealing insights often hidden from conventional machine learning methods. Abstract:Through the use of examples, we explain one way in which applied topology has evolved since the birth of persistent homology in the early 2000s. The first applications of topology to data emphasized the global shape of a dataset, such as the three-circle model for 3 × 3 pixel patches from natural images, or the configuration space of the cyclo-octane molecule, which is a sphere with a Klein bottle attached via two circles of singularity. In these studies of global shape, short persistent homology bars are disregarded as sampling noise. More recently, however, persistent homology has been used to address questions about the local geometry of data. For instance, how can local geometry be vectorized for use in machine learning problems? Persistent homology and its vectorization methods, including persistence landscapes and persistence images, provide popular techniques for incorporating both local geometry and global topology into machine learning. Our meta-hypothesis is that the short bars are as important as the long bars for many machine learning tasks. In defense of this claim, we survey applications of persistent homology to shape recognition, agent-based modeling, materials science, archaeology, and biology. Additionally, we survey work connecting persistent homology to geometric features of spaces, including curvature and fractal dimension, and various methods that have been used to incorporate persistent homology into machine learning.

Providing a computational and algorithmic foundation for techniques in TDA, this comprehensive, self-contained text introduces students and researchers in mathematics and computer science to the current state of the field. The book features a description of mathematical objects and constructs behind recent advances, the algorithms involved, computational considerations, as well as examples of topological structures or ideas that can be used in applications. Abstract:Geographic objects usually change their locations, shape and characteristics over time. Change in one object can trigger a series of changes in the adjacent objects and their topological relationships. The spatio-temporal topological relations analysis of geographic objects is an important issue in the development of a more temporally aware geographical information science. Research on, and applications of spatial topology are mature, yet the methods to exploit spatio-temporal topology are still far from the reach of GIS users. Such research has probed the definition of time, and explored the formalization of spatio-temporal topology from different perspectives. However, almost all methods and representations are mathematical or logical methods represented in qualitative ways. Conformal geometric algebra (CGA) is a new tool for unified multidimensional representation and geometric computation, from a unified perspective of multidimensional space-time. In this research, we pursue a logic based on the concept of a unified representational model based on CGA for spatio-temporal objects and their spatio-temporal topological relations formally expressed by a multi-branch decision tree, which is not only qualitative but also quantitative. The research provides theoretical and methodological support for expressing and computing the spatio-temporal topological relations among any set of geographic objects. This ability effectively promotes the expression of spatio-temporal topological relationships and enhances the analytical capabilities of GIS for dealing with both space and time.

Abstract:The thesis presents the subject of synthetic topology, especially with relation to metric spaces. A model of synthetic topology is a categorical model in which objects possess an intrinsic topology in a suitable sense, and all morphisms are continuous with regard to it. We redefine synthetic topology in order to incorporate closed sets, and several generalizations are made. Real numbers are reconstructed (to suit the new background) as open Dedekind cuts. An extensive theory is developed when metric and intrinsic topology match. In the end the results are examined in four specific models.
