Abstract:Determining the topology of an algebraic surface is not only an interesting mathematical problem, but also a key issue in computer graphics and CAGD. An algorithm is proposed to determine the intrinsic topology of an implicit real algebraic surface f(x,y,z) = 0 in R3, where f(x,y,z) ∈ Q[x,y,z] and Q is the field of rational numbers. There exist algorithms to determine the topology for algebraic surfaces of special type [2, 3, 4, 7]. The CAD method proposed by Collins [1] can divide the space into cylindrical parts. But it does not give the connection information neither the intrinsic representation.

Abstract:This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and the volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces. Discrete subgroups of Lie groups are foundational objects in modern mathematics and occur naturally in different subjects. This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and this volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces.
Realistic Modeling and Rendering of Trees: a Survey

Abstract:To increase the realism as well as improve user immersion, in many computer graphics applications, e.g. entertainment and virtual reality, it is necessary to model and render trees realistically. However, the com-plexity and diversity of tree structure make such a task challenging. In this paper, we reviewed recent main work on realistic modeling and rendering of different tree components, such as tree branching structures, leaves and barks. Firstly, the modeling of tree branching structures is divided into four categories, where the contributions of each work are analyzed and discussed thoroughly. Secondly, the work on modeling and rendering leaves and barks with precise geometries is discussed. Finally, the characteristics of each work, their limitations and main applications are summarized, based on which the possible further research directions are also discussed.

Abstract:This is a survey article on real algebra and geometry, and in particular on its recent applications in optimization and convexity. We first introduce basic notions and results from the classical theory. We then explain how these relate to optimization, mostly via semidefinite programming. We introduce interesting geometric problems arising from the classification of feasible sets for semidefinite programming. We close with a perspective on the very active area of non-commutative real algebra and geometry.

Abstract:Taking a Feynman categorical perspective, several key aspects of the geometry of surfaces are deduced from combinatorial constructions with graphs. This provides a direct route from combinatorics of graphs to string topology operations via topology, geometry and algebra. In particular, the inclusion of trees into graphs and the dissection of graphs into aggregates yield a concise formalism for cyclic and modular operads as well as their polycyclic and surface type generalizations. The latter occur prominently in two-dimensional topological field theory and in string topology. The categorical viewpoint allows us to use left Kan extensions of Feynman operations as an efficient computational tool. The computations involve the study of certain categories of structured graphs which are expected to be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a brief introduction to the main notions of geometric group theory and of asymptotic topology of finitely generated groups. We will start by presenting the basis of discrete groups and of the topology at infinity, then we will state some of the main theorems in these fields. Our aim is to give a sample of how the presence of a group action may affect the geometry of the underlying space and how in many cases topological methods may help the determine solutions of algebraic problems which may appear unrelated.

Abstract:We give a theoretical and applicable framework for dealing with real-world phenomena. Joining pointwise and pointfree notions in BISH, natural topology gives a faithful idea of important concepts and results in intuitionism. Natural topology is well-suited for practical and computational purposes. We give several examples relevant for applied mathematics, such as the decision-support system Hawk-Eye (used in professional tennis), and various real-number representations. We compare CLASS, INT, RUSS, BISH and formal topology. There are links with physics, regarding the topological character of our physical universe. Translation of intuitionistic results to BISH is facilitated by our framework, using transfinite countable-ordinal induction in Brouwer's style. We study quotients of Baire space, and obtain constructive metrizability of star-finitary spaces. Silva spaces arise as example of non-metrizable natural spaces. Finally we discuss the role of Church's Thesis in physics.

Abstract:This volume deals with the theory of finite topological spaces and its relationship with the homotopy and simple homotopy theory of polyhedra. The interaction between their intrinsic combinatorial and topological structures makes finite spaces a useful tool for studying problems in Topology, Algebra and Geometry from a new perspective. In particular, the methods developed in this manuscript are used to study Quillen’s conjecture on the poset of p-subgroups of a finite group and the Andrews-Curtis conjecture on the 3-deformability of contractible two-dimensional complexes. This self-contained work constitutes the first detailed exposition on the algebraic topology of finite spaces. It is intended for topologists and combinatorialists, but it is also recommended for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students with a modest knowledge of Algebraic Topology.

Abstract:The primary tool for analysing groups acting on trees is Bass--Serre Theory. It is comprised of two parts: a decomposition result, in which an action is decomposed via a graph of groups, and a construction result, in which graphs of groups are used to build examples of groups acting on trees. The usefulness of the latter for constructing new examples of `large' (e.g. nondiscrete) groups acting on trees is severely limited. There is a pressing need for new examples of such groups as they play an important role in the theory of locally compact groups. An alternative `local-to-global' approach to the study of groups acting on trees has recently emerged, inspired by a paper of Marc Burger and Shahar Mozes, based on groups that are `universal' with respect to some specified `local' action. In recent work, the authors of this survey article have developed a general theory of universal groups of local actions, that behaves, in many respects, like Bass--Serre Theory. We call this the theory of local action diagrams. The theory is powerful enough to completely describe all closed groups of automorphisms of trees that enjoy Tits' Independence Property (P). This article is an introductory survey of the local-to-global behaviour of groups acting on trees and the theory of local action diagrams. The article contains many ideas for future research projects.

Abstract:This survey aims to provide a guide to the literature on topological 4-manifolds. Foundational theorems on 4-manifolds are stated, especially in the topological category. Precise references are given, with indications of the strategies employed in the proofs. Where appropriate we give statements for manifolds of all dimensions. Many intuitively plausible theorems which are standard results in differential topology are either extraordinarily deep results in the topological category, are open, or are known to be false. Hence one must proceed with caution. This book seeks to help 4-manifold topologists navigate potential pitfalls, and to apply the many powerful results that do exist with confidence.

Abstract:We study an abstract notion of tree structure which lies at the common core of various tree-like discrete structures commonly used in combinatorics: trees in graphs, order trees, nested subsets of a set, tree-decompositions of graphs and matroids etc. Unlike graph-theoretical or order trees, these _tree sets_ can provide a suitable formalization of tree structure also for infinite graphs, matroids, and set partitions. Order trees reappear as oriented tree sets. We show how each of the above structures defines a tree set, and which additional information, if any, is needed to reconstruct it from this tree set.
