Most of the papers are surveys, and the volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces. Discrete subgroups of Lie groups are foundational objects in modern mathematics and occur naturally in different subjects. This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and this volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a brief introduction to the main notions of geometric group theory and of asymptotic topology of finitely generated groups. We will start by presenting the basis of discrete groups and of the topology at infinity, then we will state some of the main theorems in these fields. Our aim is to give a sample of how the presence of a group action may affect the geometry of the underlying space and how in many cases topological methods may help the determine solutions of algebraic problems which may appear unrelated.

Abstract:This book provides a self-contained introduction to the topology and geometry of surfaces and three-manifolds. The main goal is to describe Thurston's geometrisation of three-manifolds, proved by Perelman in 2002. The book is divided into three parts: the first is devoted to hyperbolic geometry, the second to surfaces, and the third to three-manifolds. It contains complete proofs of Mostow's rigidity, the thick-thin decomposition, Thurston's classification of the diffeomorphisms of surfaces (via Bonahon's geodesic currents), the prime and JSJ decomposition, the topological and geometric classification of Seifert manifolds, and Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn filling Theorem.

Abstract:This text arises from teaching advanced undergraduate courses in differential topology for the master curriculum in Mathematics at the University of Pisa. So it is mainly addressed to motivated and collaborative master undergraduate students, having nevertheless a limited mathematical background. Overall this text is a collection of themes, in some cases advanced and of historical importance, with the common feature that they can be treated with "bare hands". This means by just combining certain cut-and-paste procedures and applications of transversality, mainly through the multiplicative structure of the cobordism rings of every smooth compact manifold; topics developed from scratch along with the text.

Abstract:In this article, we shall discuss what the author considers to be important in geometry and related subjects.Since the time of the Greek mathematicians, geometry has always been in the center of science.Scientists cannot resist explaining natural phenomena in terms of the language of geometry.Indeed, it is reasonable to consider geometric objects as parts of nature.Practically all elegant theorems in geometry have found applications in classical or modern physics.In order to understand the future of geometry, it is perhaps useful to review what was known in the past.Clearly what I consider to be important may not be viewed to be so by others.Also, we should always keep in mind that what is fashionable now may not be so tomorrow.A theory can be judged to be successful only if its consequences help us understand the basic structure or the beauty of geometry.While we shall divide the subject into several categories, the division is artificial, as the development of each section depends on other sections heavily.

Abstract:We present a variety of geometrical and combinatorial tools that are used in the study of geometric structures on surfaces: volume, contact, symplectic, complex and almost complex structures. We start with a series of local rigidity results for such structures. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed. Some constructions with Riemann surfaces lead, by analogy, to notions that hold for arbitrary fields, and not only the field of complex numbers. The Riemann sphere is also defined using surjective homomorphisms of real algebras from the ring of real univariate polynomials to (arbitrary) fields, in which the field with one element is interpreted as the point at infinity of the Gaussian plane of complex numbers. Several models of the hyperbolic plane and hyperbolic 3-space appear, defined in terms of complex structures on surfaces, and in particular also a rather elementary construction of the hyperbolic plane usingreal monic univariate polynomials of degree two without real roots. Several notions and problems connected with conformal structures in dimension 2 are discussed, including dessins d'enfants, the combinatorial characterization of polynomials and rational maps of the sphere, the type problem, uniformization, quasiconformal mappings, Thurston's characterization of Speiser graphs, stratifications of spaces of monic polynomials, and others. Classical methods and new techniques complement each other. The final version of this paper will appear as a chapter in the Volume Surveys in Geometry. II (ed. A. Abstract:Differential topology, and specifically Morse theory, provide a suitable setting for formalizing and solving several problems related to shape analysis. The fundamental idea behind Morse theory is that of combining the topological exploration of a shape with quantitative measurement of geometrical properties provided by a real function defined on the shape. The added value of approaches based on Morse theory is in the possibility of adopting different functions as shape descriptors according to the properties and invariants that one wishes to analyze. In this sense, Morse theory allows one to construct a general framework for shape characterization, parametrized with respect to the mapping function used, and possibly the space associated with the shape. The mapping function plays the role of a lens through which we look at the properties of the shape, and different functions provide different insights. In the last decade, an increasing number of methods that are rooted in Morse theory and make use of properties of real-valued functions for describing shapes have been proposed in the literature. The methods proposed range from approaches which use the configuration of contours for encoding topographic surfaces to more recent work on size theory and persistent homology. All these have been developed over the years with a specific target domain and it is not trivial to systematize this work and understand the links, similarities, and differences among the different methods. Moreover, different terms have been used to denote the same mathematical constructs, which often overwhelm the understanding of the underlying common framework. The aim of this survey is to provide a clear vision of what has been developed so far, focusing on methods that make use of theoretical frameworks that are developed for classes of real functions rather than for a single function, even if they are applied in a restricted manner. The term geometrical-topological used in the title is meant to underline that both levels of information content are relevant for the applications of shape descriptions: geometrical, or metrical, properties and attributes are crucial for characterizing specific instances of features, while topological properties are necessary to abstract and classify shapes according to invariant aspects of their geometry. The approaches surveyed will be discussed in detail, with respect to theory, computation, and application. Several properties of the shape descriptors will be analyzed and compared. We believe this is a crucial step to exploit fully the potential of such approaches in many applications, as well as to identify important areas of future research.

History and Overview

Abstract:This is an expository treatise on the development of the classical geometries, starting from the origins of Euclidean geometry a few centuries BC up to around 1870. At this time classical differential geometry came to an end, and the Riemannian geometric approach started to be developed. Moreover, the discovery of non-Euclidean geometry, about 40 years earlier, had just been demonstrated to be a "true" geometry on the same footing as Euclidean geometry. These were radically new ideas, but henceforth the importance of the topic became gradually realized. As a consequence, the conventional attitude to the basic geometric questions, including the possible geometric structure of the physical space, was challenged, and foundational problems became an important issue during the following decades. Such a basic understanding of the status of geometry around 1870 enables one to study the geometric works of Sophus Lie and Felix Klein at the beginning of their career in the appropriate historical perspective.

Abstract:The book presents new results and applications of the topological derivative method in control theory, topology optimization and inverse problems. It also introduces the theory in singularly perturbed geometrical domains using selected examples. Recognized as a robust numerical technique in engineering applications, such as topology optimization, inverse problems, imaging processing, multi-scale material design and mechanical modeling including damage and fracture evolution phenomena, the topological derivative method is based on the asymptotic approximations of solutions to elliptic boundary value problems combined with mathematical programming tools. The book presents the first order topology design algorithm and its applications in topology optimization, and introduces the second order Newton-type reconstruction algorithm based on higher order topological derivatives for solving inverse reconstruction problems. It is intended for researchers and students in applied mathematics and computational mechanics interested in the mathematical aspects of the topological derivative method as well as its applications in computational mechanics.
