In particular, we provide a lightning introduction to higher structures and to the construction of the kinematical data of higher gauge theories, i.e. connections on higher principal bundles. We also summarise the most important applications and dynamical principles that have appeared in the literature, and we close with comments on related areas.

Abstract:This is an overview of higher structural constructions in physics. The main motivations of our current attempt are as follows: (i) to provide a brief introduction to derived algebraic geometry, (ii) to understand how derived objects naturally appear in physics and give rise to formal mathematical treatment, and (iii) to investigate how factorization algebras together with certain higher categorical structures come into play to encode the structure of observables in physics. Adopting such a heavy and relatively enriched language allows us to formalize the notions of quantization and observables in quantum field theory as well. This document is organized to examine each task listed above in an expository manner.

Field Theory via Higher Geometry I: Smooth Sets of Fields

Abstract:The physical world is fundamentally: (1) field-theoretic, (2) smooth, (3) local, (4) gauged, (5) containing fermions, and last but not least: (6) non-perturbative. Tautologous as this may sound, it is remarkable that the mathematical notion of geometry which reflects all of these aspects -- namely, as we will explain: "supergeometric homotopy theory" -- has received little attention even by mathematicians and remains unknown to most physicists. Elaborate algebraic machinery is known for perturbative field theories, but in order to tackle the deep open questions of the subject, these will need to be lifted to a global geometry of physics. Our aim in this series is, first, to introduce inclined physicists to this theory, second to fill mathematical gaps in the existing literature, and finally to rigorously develop the full power of supergeometric homotopy theory and apply it to the analysis of fermionic (not necessarily super-symmetric) field theories. To warm up, in this first part we explain how classical bosonic Lagrangian field theory (variational Euler-Lagrange theory) finds a natural home in the "topos of smooth sets", thereby neatly setting the scene for the higher supergeometry discussed in later parts of the series. This introductory material will be largely known to a few experts but has never been comprehensively laid out before. A key technical point we make is to regard jet bundle geometry systematically in smooth sets instead of just its subcategories of diffeological spaces or even Fréchet manifolds -- or worse simply as a formal object. Besides being more transparent and powerful, it is only on this backdrop that a reasonable supergeometric jet geometry exists, needed for satisfactory discussion of any field theory with fermions.

Abstract:We review the construction of Lagrangians for higher spin fields of mixed symmetry in the framework of graded geometry. The main advantage of the graded formalism in this context is that it provides universal expressions, in the sense that a given Lagrangian describes the dynamics of any type of bosonic tensor field even though the corresponding explicit expressions in terms of local field components and their derivatives look rather different. Aside from free fields and their kinetic terms, we also consider higher derivative interaction terms that lead to second order field equations. For scalars, differential forms and bipartite tensors, these are identified with Galileon theories, written in a simple yet elegant form as a generalised kinetic term, and are gauge invariant by construction. For fields of spin higher than 2, we illustrate the candidate Galileon-like interactions and argue that full gauge invariance and locality cannot be simultaneously maintained.

Abstract:Abstract This review is a primer on recently established geometric methods for observables in quantum field theories. The main emphasis is on amplituhedra, i.e. geometries encoding scattering amplitudes for a variety of theories. These pertain to a broader family of geometries called positive geometries, whose basics we review. We also describe other members of this family that are associated with different physical quantities and briefly consider the most recent developments related to positive geometries. Finally, we discuss the main open problems in the field. This is a Topical Review invited by Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical.
Unification of the Fundamental Forces in Higher-Order Riemannian Geometry

Abstract:In Part I of the present series of papers, we adumbrate our idea of Riemannian geometry to higher order in the infinitesimals and derive expressions for the appropriate generalizations of parallel transport and the Riemannian curvature tensor. In Part II, the implications of higher-order geometry for the general theory of relativity beyond Einstein are developed. In the present Part III, we expand on the framework of Part II so as to take up the problem of field-theoretical unification. Employing the form of the Einstein-Hilbert action to higher order as proposed in Part II, we show how in nearly flat space the higher-order terms give rise to a gauge theory of Yang-Mills type. At the 2-jet level, the electroweak force emerges after imposition of gauge fixing. In fact, the proposed form of the Einstein-Hilbert action permits us to say more: we argue that the equivalence principle results in a Proca term that brings about the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the standard model. Two empirical predictions support our reasoning: first, we obtain a theoretical value for the Weinberg angle and second, we find that -- without any adjustable parameters -- the implied value of Coulomb's constant agrees well with experiment. The final section examines the 3-jet level. The same mechanism that produces Glashow-Weinberg-Salam electroweak theory at the 2-jet level eventuates in a chromodynamical force having $SU(3)$ symmetry at the 3-jet level.

Abstract:These notes provide an introduction to the algebra and geometry of differential operators and jet bundles. Their point of view is guided by the leitmotiv that higher-spin gravity theories call for higher-order generalisations of Lie derivatives and diffeomorphisms. Nevertheless, the material covered here may be of general interest to anyone working on topics where geometrical (coordinate-free, global, generic) and mathematically rigorous definitions of differential operators are required.

Riemannian Geometry to Higher Order in the Infinitesimals

Abstract:Differential geometry may be generalized to allow infinitesimals to any order. The purpose of the present contribution is to show that the theory so developed expands received geometrical ideas in an interesting way, rich in potential for future exploration. The first order of business is to furnish the notion of a higher tangent vector, as defined abstractly by means of commutative algebra, with a workable interpretation in terms of spatial intuition. Then we introduce the differential calculus of the so-called jet connection, viz., an extension of the usual affine connection that takes higher tangent vectors as its arguments -- thereby enabling us to give a sense to parallel transport in the direction of a higher tangent, what has (to our knowledge) never been entertained before. After generalizing the Riemannian metric tensor to include a dependence up to any order in the infinitesimals, we arrive at natural analogues of the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemannian curvature tensor which display novel phenomena rooted in interactions among infinitesimals differing in order. Finally on the integral side, an intrinsic theory of integration adapted to integrands possibly of higher than first order in the differentials is developed, with a view towards eventually defining an action functional that will be applicable in the general theory of relativity.

Abstract:This is an invited contribution to the 2nd edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, that provides a very short survey of derived symplectic geometry. Derived symplectic geometry studies symplectic structures on derived stacks. Derived stacks are the main players in derived geometry, the purpose of which is to deal with singular spaces, while symplectic structures are an essential ingredient of the geometric formalism of classical mechanics and classical field theory. In addition to providing an overview of a relatively young field of research, we provide a case study on Casson's invariant.

Higher Geometric Structures on Manifolds and the Gauge Theory of Deligne Cohomology

Abstract:We study smooth higher symmetry groups and moduli $\infty$-stacks of generic higher geometric structures on manifolds. Symmetries are automorphisms which cover non-trivial diffeomorphisms of the base manifold. We construct the smooth higher symmetry group of any geometric structure on $M$ and show that this completely classifies, via a universal property, equivariant structures on the higher geometry. We construct moduli stacks of higher geometric data as $\infty$-categorical quotients by the action of the higher symmetries, extract information about the homotopy types of these moduli $\infty$-stacks, and prove a helpful sufficient criterion for when two such higher moduli stacks are equivalent. In the second part of the paper we study higher $\mathrm{U}(1)$-connections. First, we observe that higher connections come organised into higher groupoids, which further carry affine actions by Baez-Crans-type higher vector spaces. We compute a presentation of the higher gauge actions for $n$-gerbes with $k$-connection, comment on the relation to higher-form symmetries, and present a new String group model. We construct smooth moduli $\infty$-stacks of higher Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell solutions, correcting previous such considerations in the literature, and compute the homotopy groups of several moduli $\infty$-stacks of higher $\mathrm{U}(1)$- connections. Finally, we show that a discrepancy between two approaches to the differential geometry of NSNS supergravity (via generalised and higher geometry, respectively) vanishes at the level of moduli $\infty$-stacks of NSNS supergravity solutions.

Abstract:Higher bundles are homotopy coherent generalisations of classical fibre bundles. They appear in numerous contexts in geometry, topology and physics. In particular, higher principal bundles provide the geometric framework for higher-group gauge theories with higher-form gauge potentials and their higher-dimensional holonomies. An $\infty$-categorical formulation of higher bundles further allows one to identify these objects in contexts outside the worlds of smooth manifolds or topological spaces. This article reviews the theory of $\infty$-bundles, focussing on principal $\infty$-bundles, and surveys several of their applications. It is an invited contribution to the Topology section in the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics.

Abstract:These notes are intended to be a pedagogical introduction to higher-form symmetries, which are symmetries whose charged objects are extended operators supported on lines, surfaces, and etc. This subject has been one of the most popular and effervescent topics of theoretical physics in recent years. Gauge theories are central in the study of higher-form symmetries, with Wilson and 't Hooft operators corresponding to the charged objects. Along these notes, we discuss in detail some basic aspects, including Abelian Maxwell and Chern-Simons theories, and $SU(N)$ non-Abelian gauge theories. We also discuss spontaneous breaking of higher-form symmetries.

Geometry on surfaces, a source for mathematical developments

Abstract:We present a variety of geometrical and combinatorial tools that are used in the study of geometric structures on surfaces: volume, contact, symplectic, complex and almost complex structures. We start with a series of local rigidity results for such structures. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed. Some constructions with Riemann surfaces lead, by analogy, to notions that hold for arbitrary fields, and not only the field of complex numbers. The Riemann sphere is also defined using surjective homomorphisms of real algebras from the ring of real univariate polynomials to (arbitrary) fields, in which the field with one element is interpreted as the point at infinity of the Gaussian plane of complex numbers. Several models of the hyperbolic plane and hyperbolic 3-space appear, defined in terms of complex structures on surfaces, and in particular also a rather elementary construction of the hyperbolic plane usingreal monic univariate polynomials of degree two without real roots. Several notions and problems connected with conformal structures in dimension 2 are discussed, including dessins d'enfants, the combinatorial characterization of polynomials and rational maps of the sphere, the type problem, uniformization, quasiconformal mappings, Thurston's characterization of Speiser graphs, stratifications of spaces of monic polynomials, and others. Abstract:Symplectic and Poisson geometry emerged as a tool to understand the mathematical structure behind classical mechanics. However, due to its huge development over the past century, it has become an independent field of research in differential geometry. In this lecture notes, we will introduce the essential objects and techniques in symplectic geometry (e.g Darboux coordinates, Lagrangian submanifolds, cotangent bundles) and Poisson geometry (e.g symplectic foliations, some examples of Poisson structures). This geometric approach will be motivated by examples from classical physics, and at the end we will explore applications of symplectic and Poisson geometry to Lie theory and other fields of mathematical physics.

In condensed matter systems, quantum geometry refers to the geoemtric properties of Bloch states in the Brillouin zone. This pedagogical review provides an accessible introduction to the concept of quantum geometry, emphasizing its extensive implications across multiple domains. Specifically, we discuss the role of quantum geometry in optical responses, Landau levels, and fractional Chern insulators, as well as its influence on superfluid weight, spin stiffness, exciton condensates, electron-phonon coupling, etc. By integrating these topics, we underscore the pervasive significance of quantum geometry in understanding emergent behaviors in quantum materials. Finally, we present an outlook on open questions and potential future directions, highlighting the need for continued exploration in this rapidly developing field.

Abstract:This research focuses on differential geometry in high-dimensional space, an area of great importance in revealing the structure of the universe and the properties of microscopic particles. Through precise mathematical modeling and in-depth theoretical analysis, this paper successfully deduces and validates a series of key high-dimensional differential geometry theorems, and discusses their application in specific high-dimensional Spaces. The results not only deepen our understanding of the interaction between curvature and topology in high-dimensional Spaces, but also demonstrate the potential applications of these theorems in mathematical physics, especially in general relativity and quantum gravity. These findings provide a new perspective for the theoretical development of high-dimensional differential geometry, and promote the depth of scientific exploration and interdisciplinary cooperation.
