Abstract:These notes provide an introduction to the algebra and geometry of differential operators and jet bundles. Their point of view is guided by the leitmotiv that higher-spin gravity theories call for higher-order generalisations of Lie derivatives and diffeomorphisms. Nevertheless, the material covered here may be of general interest to anyone working on topics where geometrical (coordinate-free, global, generic) and mathematically rigorous definitions of differential operators are required.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to provide a mathematical foundation for high - spin gravity theory by introducing the geometric toolkit of differential operators and jet bundles. Specifically, the main purposes of the paper are: 1. **Introduce the geometry and algebra of differential operators and jet bundles**: Starting from the perspective of modern algebraic geometry, the paper redefines the concepts of differential operators and jet bundles. These concepts are not only crucial for high - spin gravity theory, but also of wide interest in any research field that requires a coordinate - free, global, universal, and mathematically rigorous definition of differential operators. 2. **Generalize Lie derivatives and diffeomorphisms**: High - spin gravity theory requires a high - order generalization of traditional Lie derivatives and diffeomorphisms. The paper explores how to generalize the concept of vector fields to high - order differential operators, thereby providing a richer mathematical framework for symmetries in high - spin gravity theory. 3. **Construct high - order differential structures**: The paper discusses in detail zero - order, first - order, and higher - order differential structures, including zero - order jets, first - order jets, high - order jets and their dual concepts (i.e., zero - order co - jets, first - order co - jets, high - order co - jets). These structures provide the necessary mathematical tools for understanding the geometric properties of high - spin fields. ### Specific content overview - **Section 1: Introduction** - The paper first introduces the research background and motivation, emphasizing the need for high - order differential operators in high - spin gravity theory. - It outlines the structural arrangement of the paper, which is divided into four parts, introducing respectively the geometry of differential operators, the universal enveloping algebra of Lie algebroids, the general theory of connections on fiber bundles, and high - order frames and jet groups. - **Section 2: Differential operators as high - order vector fields** - It introduces the view that differential operators are a natural high - order generalization of vector fields. - It discusses the relationship between differential operators and vector fields, as well as their similarities and differences in geometry and algebra. - **Section 3: Zero - order differential structures: points and zero - order (co)jets** - It introduces the algebraic definition of points, that is, as the maximal ideals of the function algebra. - It discusses the concepts of zero - order jets and zero - order co - jets, as well as their geometric significance. - **Section 4: First - order differential structures: tangent (co)vectors** - It redefines first - order differential operators from an algebraic perspective, especially the concept of vector fields as derivatives. - It discusses the properties of tangent vectors and cotangent vectors, as well as the structure of tangent tensors. - **Section 5: First - order differential structures: first - order (co)jets** - It introduces the concept of functions as zero - order differential operators. - It discusses the algebraic structure of first - order differential operators, as well as the definitions of first - order jets and first - order co - jets. - **Section 6: High - order differential structures: (co)jets** - It discusses in detail the definition of high - order differential operators, including Grothendieck's elegant algebraic definition. - It introduces the concepts of high - order jets and high - order co - jets, as well as their geometric applications. - It emphasizes the almost commutative structure of the differential operator algebra. ### Conclusion By systematically introducing the geometry and algebra of differential operators and jet bundles, the paper provides a solid mathematical foundation for high - spin gravity theory. These tools not only help to understand the geometric properties of high - spin fields, but also provide new perspectives and methods for research in other related fields.
