Abstract:The chapter is an extensive account of the metric topology and is a prerequisite for all the subsequent chapters. The leading sections develop the basic metric properties such as closure and interior, continuity and equivalent metrics, separation properties, product spaces, and countability axioms. This is followed by a detailed study of completeness, compactness, local compactness, and function spaces. Chapter applications include contraction mappings, continuous nowhere differentiable functions, space-filling curves, closed convex subsets of ?n, and a number of approximation results. The chapter concludes with a detailed section on orthogonal polynomials and Fourier series of continuous functions, which, together with section 3.7, provides an excellent background for Hilbert spaces. The study of sequence and function spaces in this chapter leads up gradually into Banach spaces.

Abstract:This book provides an accessible introduction to algebraic topology, a field at the intersection of topology, geometry and algebra, together with its applications. Moreover, it covers several related topics that are in fact important in the overall scheme of algebraic topology. Comprising eighteen chapters and two appendices, the book integrates various concepts of algebraic topology, supported by examples, exercises, applications and historical notes. Primarily intended as a textbook, the book offers a valuable resource for undergraduate, postgraduate and advanced mathematics students alike. Focusing more on the geometric than on algebraic aspects of the subject, as well as its natural development, the book conveys the basic language of modern algebraic topology by exploring homotopy, homology and cohomology theories, and examines a variety of spaces: spheres, projective spaces, classical groups and their quotient spaces, function spaces, polyhedra, topological groups, Lie groups and cell complexes, etc. The book studies a variety of maps, which are continuous functions between spaces. It also reveals the importance of algebraic topology in contemporary mathematics, theoretical physics, computer science, chemistry, economics, and the biological and medical sciences, and encourages students to engage in further study.

Abstract:This paper introduces topological data analysis. Starting from notions of a metric space and some elementary graph theory, we take example sets of data and demonstrate some of their topological properties. We discuss simplicial complexes and how they relate to something called the Nerve Theorem. For this we introduce notions from the field of topology such as open covers, homeomorphism and homotopy equivalences. This leads us into discussing filtering data and deriving topologically invariant simplicial complexes from the underlying data set. There is then a small introduction to persistent homology and Betti numbers as these are useful analytical tools for TDA. An accompanying online appendix for the code producing the bulk of the figures in this paper is available at <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://bit.ly/TDA_2020" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>.

This tutorial provides a comprehensive introduction to two key TML techniques, persistent homology and the Mapper algorithm, with an emphasis on practical applications. Persistent homology captures multi-scale topological features such as clusters, loops, and voids, while the Mapper algorithm creates an interpretable graph summarizing high-dimensional data. To enhance accessibility, we adopt a data-centric approach, enabling readers to gain hands-on experience applying these techniques to relevant tasks. We provide step-by-step explanations, implementations, hands-on examples, and case studies to demonstrate how these tools can be applied to real-world problems. The goal is to equip researchers and practitioners with the knowledge and resources to incorporate TML into their work, revealing insights often hidden from conventional machine learning methods. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to discuss some applications of general topology in computer algorithms including modeling and simulation, and also in computer graphics and image processing. While the progress in these areas heavily depends on advances in computing hardware, the major intellectual achievements are the algorithms. The applications of general topology in other branches of mathematics are not discussed, since they are not applications of mathematics outside of mathematics.

Abstract:Higher-dimensional category theory is the study of n-categories, operads, braided monoidal categories, and other such exotic structures. Although it can be treated purely as an algebraic subject, it is inherently topological in nature: the higher-dimensional diagrams one draws to represent these structures can be taken quite literally as pieces of topology. Examples of this are the braids in a braided monoidal category, and the pentagon which appears in the definitions of both monoidal category and A_infinity space. I will try to give a Friday-afternoonish description of some of the dreams people have for higher-dimensional category theory and its interactions with topology. Grothendieck, for instance, suggested that tame topology should be the study of n-groupoids; others have hoped that an n-category of cobordisms between cobordisms between ... will provide a clean setting for TQFT; and there is convincing evidence that the whole world of n-categories is a mirror of the world of homotopy groups of spheres.

Abstract:This volume deals with the theory of finite topological spaces and its relationship with the homotopy and simple homotopy theory of polyhedra. The interaction between their intrinsic combinatorial and topological structures makes finite spaces a useful tool for studying problems in Topology, Algebra and Geometry from a new perspective. In particular, the methods developed in this manuscript are used to study Quillen’s conjecture on the poset of p-subgroups of a finite group and the Andrews-Curtis conjecture on the 3-deformability of contractible two-dimensional complexes. This self-contained work constitutes the first detailed exposition on the algebraic topology of finite spaces. It is intended for topologists and combinatorialists, but it is also recommended for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students with a modest knowledge of Algebraic Topology.

Abstract:We give a theoretical and applicable framework for dealing with real-world phenomena. Joining pointwise and pointfree notions in BISH, natural topology gives a faithful idea of important concepts and results in intuitionism. Natural topology is well-suited for practical and computational purposes. We give several examples relevant for applied mathematics, such as the decision-support system Hawk-Eye (used in professional tennis), and various real-number representations. We compare CLASS, INT, RUSS, BISH and formal topology. There are links with physics, regarding the topological character of our physical universe. Translation of intuitionistic results to BISH is facilitated by our framework, using transfinite countable-ordinal induction in Brouwer's style. We study quotients of Baire space, and obtain constructive metrizability of star-finitary spaces. Silva spaces arise as example of non-metrizable natural spaces. Finally we discuss the role of Church's Thesis in physics.

Abstract:Topological data analysis (TDA) has emerged recently as a viable tool for analyzing complex data, and the area has grown substantially both in its methodologies and applicability. Providing a computational and algorithmic foundation for techniques in TDA, this comprehensive, self-contained text introduces students and researchers in mathematics and computer science to the current state of the field. The book features a description of mathematical objects and constructs behind recent advances, the algorithms involved, computational considerations, as well as examples of topological structures or ideas that can be used in applications. It provides a thorough treatment of persistent homology together with various extensions – like zigzag persistence and multiparameter persistence – and their applications to different types of data, like point clouds, triangulations, or graph data. Other important topics covered include discrete Morse theory, the Mapper structure, optimal generating cycles, as well as recent advances in embedding TDA within machine learning frameworks.

Abstract:The basic notion of how topoi can be utilized in physics is presented here. Topos and category theory serve as valuable tools which extend our ordinary set-theoretical conceptions, can further the study of quantum logic and give rise to new and 'neo-realistic' descriptions of quantum physics, i.e. make possible the construction of a general scheme for quantum physics, which 'looks like' the classical one. A novel way of writing theories of physics, by representing a formal language of a physical system, into an appropriate topos, is analyzed here. This novel approach is initiated by C.J. Isham and A. Doering and the major part of this paper comes from there; however there has been an effort in simplifying the basic ideas and do this work accessible to 'less experts' of the field. A minor, but not less important, part of this paper is devoted to resuming, in a concise way the background knowledge of logic, quantum logic and category theory, that is necessary for anyone who wishes to follow the whole topos approach.

The class of so-called <math>w⁎</math>-locally relatively compact sets was introduced recently by Fonf, Pallares, Troyanski and the author, and were found to be a useful topological tool in the theory of isomorphic smoothness and polyhedrality in Banach spaces. We develop the topological theory of these sets and present some Banach space applications.

Abstract:This overview article makes the case for how topological concepts can enrich research in machine learning. Using the Euler Characteristic Transform (ECT), a geometrical-topological invariant, as a running example, I present different use cases that result in more efficient models for analyzing point clouds, graphs, and meshes. Moreover, I outline a vision for how topological concepts could be used in the future, comprising (1) the learning of functions on topological spaces, (2) the building of hybrid models that imbue neural networks with knowledge about the topological information in data, and (3) the analysis of qualitative properties of neural networks. With current research already addressing some of these aspects, this article thus serves as an introduction and invitation to this nascent area of research.

A Topology Scavenger Hunt to Introduce Topological Data Analysis

Abstract:Topology at the undergraduate level is often a theoretical mathematics course, introducing concepts from point-set topology or possibly algebraic topology. However, the last two decades have seen an explosion of growth in applied topology and topological data analysis, which are topics that can be presented in an accessible way to undergraduate students and can encourage exciting projects. For the past several years, the Topology course at Macalester College has included content from point-set and algebraic topology, as well as applied topology, culminating in a project chosen by the students. In the course, students work through a topology scavenger hunt as an activity to introduce the ideas and software behind some of the primary tools in topological data analysis, namely, persistent homology and mapper. This scavenger hunt includes a variety of point clouds of varying dimensions, such as an annulus in 2D, a bouquet of loops in 3D, a sphere in 4D, and a torus in 400D. The students' goal is to analyze each point cloud with a variety of software to infer the topological structure. After completing this activity, students are able to extend the ideas learned in the scavenger hunt to an open-ended capstone project. Examples of past projects include: using persistence to explore the relationship between country development and geography, to analyze congressional voting patterns, and to classify genres of a large corpus of texts by combining with tools from natural language processing and machine learning.
