Abstract:We present a generalized notion of degree for rotating solutions of planar systems. We prove a formula for the relation of such degree with the classical use of Brouwer's degree and obtain a twist theorem for the existence of periodic solutions, which is complementary to the Poincaré-Birkhoff Theorem. Some applications to asymptotically linear and superlinear differential equations are discussed.

Abstract:This document introduces the key concepts and algorithms of Topological Data Analysis in low dimensions. First, the input data representation is formalized. Second, some of the core concepts of Topological Data Analysis are presented, including critical points, notions of Persistent Homology, Reeb graphs and Morse-Smale Complexes. Finally, a brief review of the state-of-the-art algorithms is presented. For the reader's convenience, the most important definitions and properties are highlighted with boxes. For further readings, I refer the reader to the excellent introduction to Computational Topology by Edelsbrunner and Harer.

Abstract:This book provides a self-contained introduction to the topology and geometry of surfaces and three-manifolds. The main goal is to describe Thurston's geometrisation of three-manifolds, proved by Perelman in 2002. The book is divided into three parts: the first is devoted to hyperbolic geometry, the second to surfaces, and the third to three-manifolds. It contains complete proofs of Mostow's rigidity, the thick-thin decomposition, Thurston's classification of the diffeomorphisms of surfaces (via Bonahon's geodesic currents), the prime and JSJ decomposition, the topological and geometric classification of Seifert manifolds, and Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn filling Theorem.

Abstract:This text arises from teaching advanced undergraduate courses in differential topology for the master curriculum in Mathematics at the University of Pisa. So it is mainly addressed to motivated and collaborative master undergraduate students, having nevertheless a limited mathematical background. Overall this text is a collection of themes, in some cases advanced and of historical importance, with the common feature that they can be treated with "bare hands". Abstract:In this paper, we provide a brief introduction to the main notions of geometric group theory and of asymptotic topology of finitely generated groups. We will start by presenting the basis of discrete groups and of the topology at infinity, then we will state some of the main theorems in these fields. Our aim is to give a sample of how the presence of a group action may affect the geometry of the underlying space and how in many cases topological methods may help the determine solutions of algebraic problems which may appear unrelated.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:This paper introduces topological data analysis. Starting from notions of a metric space and some elementary graph theory, we take example sets of data and demonstrate some of their topological properties. We discuss simplicial complexes and how they relate to something called the Nerve Theorem. For this we introduce notions from the field of topology such as open covers, homeomorphism and homotopy equivalences. This leads us into discussing filtering data and deriving topologically invariant simplicial complexes from the underlying data set. There is then a small introduction to persistent homology and Betti numbers as these are useful analytical tools for TDA. An accompanying online appendix for the code producing the bulk of the figures in this paper is available at <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://bit.ly/TDA_2020" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>.

Abstract:Spawned by Scarf's pioneering work on the calculation of fixed points, an entire new field in mathematical programming has emerged. A wide array of problems that can be posed as fixed point problems, such as problems involving equilibria, games, systems of equations, global optimization, and structural mechanics, have come into the purview of these new constructive techniques. Underlying these techniques are certain mathematical concepts from differential topology, more specifically degree theory (Brouwer) and homotopies. Usually, the mathematical machinery required for these concepts necessitates a keen familiarity with piecewise linear and/or differential topology. In this paper, the development is made by following the paths arising from an ordinary differential equation. The differential equation results from Cramer's rule for linear equations. The applicability and ease of our approach are shown by obtaining simple proofs of theorems in differential topology.

Abstract:For a surface immersed in a three-dimensional space endowed with a norm instead of an inner product, one can define analogous concepts of curvature and metric. With these concepts in mind, various questions immediately appear. The aim of this paper is to propose and answer some of those questions. In this framework we prove several characterizations of minimal surfaces, and analogues of some global theorems (e.g., Hadamard-type theorems) are also derived. A result on the curvature of surfaces of constant Minkowski width is also given. Finally, we study the ambient metric induced on the surface, proving an extension of the classical Bonnet theorem.

Abstract:The present document is the draft of a book which presents an introduction to infinite-dimensional differential geometry beyond Banach manifolds. As is well known the usual calculus breaks down in this setting. Hence, we replace it by the more general Bastiani calculus which is built using directional derivatives. We then focus on two main areas of infinite-dimensional geometry: 1. infinite-dimensional Lie groups, and 2. weak Riemannian geometry. Both topics are developed and connected to manifolds of (smooth) mappings. These manifolds are studied in detail to construct important examples such as diffeomorphism groups, loop groups and Riemannian metrics for shape analysis. Manifolds of mappings are prime examples for surprising connections between finite and infinite-dimensional geometry. However, also pathologies occurring in infinite-dimensions will be highlighted in many examples. The geometric techniques developed will then be showcased in modern applications of geometry such as geometric hydrodynamics, higher geometry in the guise of Lie groupoids and rough path theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce some versions of relative connectedness of subspaces of a topological space and we give some facts and relations among them. We prove that these relative versions satisfy some of the classical properties of connectedness. Additionally, we apply our results to the theory of hyperspaces, aiming to address a general problem posed by Arhangel'skii (Comment Math Univ Carolin 36:305–325, 1995, Problem 3).

Abstract:A theory of graded manifolds can be viewed as a generalization of differential geometry of smooth manifolds. It allows one to work with functions which locally depend not only on ordinary real variables, but also on Z -graded variables which can either commute or anticommute, according to their degree. To obtain a consistent global description of graded manifolds, one resorts to sheaves of graded commutative associative algebras on second countable Hausdorff topological spaces, locally isomorphic to a suitable "model space". This paper aims to build robust mathematical foundations of geometry of graded manifolds. Some known issues in their definition are resolved, especially the case where positively and negatively graded coordinates appear together. The focus is on a detailed exposition of standard geometrical constructions rather than on applications. Necessary excerpts from graded algebra and graded sheaf theory are included.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:This work tackles a class of nonlinear parabolic equations in divergence form having fractional time order derivatives. We consider parabolic equations involving second-order spacial operators with Riemann-Liouville time-fractional derivatives. We establish the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the studied models. Our theoretical approach relies essentially on the use of Leray-Schauder topological degree and involves some new technical estimates.
