For a positive integer [math], let [math] be a free (nilpotent of class 2)-by-abelian and abelian-by-(nilpotent of class 2) Lie algebra of rank n. We show that the subgroup of [math] generated by the tame automorphisms and a countably infinite set of explicitly given automorphisms of [math] is dense in [math] with respect to the formal power series topology.

Abstract:The automorphism group of a class of nilpotent groups with infinite cyclic derived subgroups is determined. Abstract:Let G be a nilpotent π-group of finite rank,α and β be two automorphisms of G.Suppose that 1 = ζ0G < ζ1G < ··· < ζcG = G is the upper central series of G,and αi and βi are the automorphisms of ζiG/ζi-1G induced by α and β,respectively.If Im(αiβi-βiαi) is either a cyclic group or T ♁ D,where T is a cyclic group and D is a divisible group of rank 1,then <α,β> is NAF-.In particular,if α and β are two π'-automorphisms of G,then(i) in the case Im(αiβi-βiαi) is cyclic,<α,β> is an extension of a finite nilpotent π-group by a finite abelian π'-group;(ii) in the case Im(αiβi-βiαi) is either a cyclic group or T ♁ D,<α,β> is a residually finite π ∪ π'-group and is a(finitely-generated torsion-free nilpotent group)by-(finite nilpotent π-group)-by-(finite abelian π'-group).In addition,we investigate the dual problem for the lower central series of G and obtain the dual results.

Abstract:Suppose $G$ is a $\mathcal{T}$-group (finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent) with centralizers outside of the derived subgroup being abelian of rank equal to $\text{rank}(Z_1)+1$. This includes the class of free nilpotent groups $\mathcal{N}_{r,c}$ of a given rank $r$ and class $c$. It is shown that the upper and lower central series coincide in such groups and from this that they are metabelian. We then prove that all such groups arise as semidirect products of free abelian groups with respect to representation $[G,G]\to \text{UT}(n,\mathbb{Z})$ by automorphisms constructed from integer powers of elements in defining relations we call integral weights of $G$.

Abstract:The group of 2-by-2 matrices with integer entries and determinant $\pm > 1$ can be identified either with the group of outer automorphisms of a rank two free group or with the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of a 2-dimensional torus. Thus this group is the beginning of three natural sequences of groups, namely the general linear groups ${\rm{GL}}(n,\Z)$, the groups of outer automorphisms of free groups of rank $n\geq 2$, and the mapping class groups of closed orientable surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. Much of the work on mapping class groups and automorphisms of free groups is motivated by the idea that these sequences of groups are strongly analogous. In this article we highlight a few of the most striking similarities and differences between these series of groups and present a list of open problems motivated by this philosophy.

Abstract Group Automorphisms of Two-Step Nilpotent Lie Groups and Partial Automatic Continuity

Abstract:Any abstract (not necessarily continuous) group automorphism of a simple, compact Lie group must be continuous due to Cartan (1930) and van der Waerden (1933). The purpose of this paper is to study a similar question in nilpotent Lie groups. For many simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups, we show any abstract group automorphism is continuous "up to discontinuity due to the center and field automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}$." Such groups include (1) a generic simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie group of type $(p,q)$ with $p$ large, (2) all twelve simply connected 2-step nilpotent Lie groups of dimensions 6 or less except for one example, and (3) Iwasawa N-groups of simple Lie groups of rank 1, i.e., "Heisenberg groups". To our knowledge, the exception in (2) is the first nilpotent Lie group whose automorphism group is not of the type described above. In the proof for (3), we use tools from Riemannian geometry, even though the result is purely algebraic. All of the three cases are derived from one key result that gives a sufficient condition for the automorphism group to be of the type described above.

Abstract:In this article we study the space of left- and bi-invariant orderings on a torsion-free nilpotent group $G$. We will show that generally the set of such orderings is equipped with a faithful action of the automorphism group of $G$. We prove a result which allows us to establish the same conclusion when $G$ is assumed to be merely residually torsion-free nilpotent. In particular, we obtain faithful actions of mapping class groups of surfaces. We will draw connections between the structure of orderings on residually torsion-free nilpotent, hyperbolic groups and their Gromov boundaries, and we show that in those cases a faithful $\Aut(G)$-action on the boundary is equivalent to a faithful $\Aut(G)$ action on the space of left--invariant orderings.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a nilpotent group acted on by a group $H$ via automorphisms and let the group $G$ admit the semidirect product $FH$ as a group of automorphisms so that $C_G(F) = 1$. We prove that the order of $\gamma_\infty(G)$, the rank of $\gamma_\infty(G)$ are bounded in terms of the orders of $\gamma_{\infty}(C_G(H))$ and $H$, the rank of $\gamma_{\infty}(C_G(H))$ and the order of $H$, respectively in cases where either $FH$ is a Frobenius group; $FH$ is a Frobenius-like group satisfying some certain conditions; or $FH=\langle \alpha,\beta\rangle$ is a dihedral group generated by the involutions $\alpha$ and $\beta$ with $F =\langle \alpha\beta\rangle$ and $H =\langle\alpha \rangle$.

Abstract:In this paper we give an explicit description of the automorphism group of a primary Kodaira surface $X$ in terms of suitable liftings to the universal cover $\mathbb{C}^2$. As it happens for complex tori, the automorphism group of $X$ is an extension of a finite cyclic group related to the action of the automorphisms on the tangent bundle of $X$ by a group of automorphisms which acts on $X$ as translations (both on the base and on the fibres of the elliptic fibraion of $X$). We can then characterize those automorphisms acting symplectically and those acting trivially on cohomology. Finally, we describe the fixed locus of an automorphism and we show that, if not empty, it is the union of a finite number of fibres of the elliptic fibration of $X$. As a byproduct, we provide a different proof of Borcea's description of the moduli space of Kodaira surfaces.
