Abstract:Let G be a free group in a variety of groups, but G is not absolutely free. We prove that the group of automorphisms Aut(G) is linear iff G is a virtually nilpotent group.

Abstract:Given a field K, we investigate which subgroups of the group Aut A K 2 of polynomial automorphisms of the plane are linear or not. The results are contrasted. The group Aut A K 2 itself is nonlinear, except if K is finite, but it contains some large subgroups, of “codimension-five” or more, which are linear. This phenomenon is specific to dimension two: it is easy to prove that any natural “finite-codimensional” subgroup of Aut A K 3 is nonlinear, even for a finite field K. When ch K = 0 , we also look at a similar questions for f.g. subgroups, and the results are again disparate. The group Aut A K 2 has a one-related f.g. subgroup which is not linear. However, there is a large subgroup, of “codimension-three”, which is locally linear but not linear.

Abstract:The group of 2-by-2 matrices with integer entries and determinant $\pm > 1$ can be identified either with the group of outer automorphisms of a rank two free group or with the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of a 2-dimensional torus. Thus this group is the beginning of three natural sequences of groups, namely the general linear groups ${\rm{GL}}(n,\Z)$, the groups of outer automorphisms of free groups of rank $n\geq 2$, and the mapping class groups of closed orientable surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. Much of the work on mapping class groups and automorphisms of free groups is motivated by the idea that these sequences of groups are strongly analogous. In this article we highlight a few of the most striking similarities and differences between these series of groups and present a list of open problems motivated by this philosophy.

Abstract:Abstract The automorphism group of an affine variety is an ind‐group. Its Lie algebra is canonically embedded into the Lie algebra of vector fields on . We study the relations between subgroups of and Lie subalgebras of . We show that a subgroup generated by a family of connected algebraic subgroups of is algebraic if and only if the Lie algebras generate a finite‐dimensional Lie subalgebra of . Extending a result by Cohen–Draisma (Transform. Groups 8 (2003), no. 1, 51–68), we prove that a locally finite Lie algebra generated by locally nilpotent vector fields is algebraic, that is, for an algebraic subgroup . Along the same lines, we prove that if a subgroup generated by finitely many connected algebraic groups is solvable, then it is an algebraic group. We also show that a unipotent algebraic subgroup has derived length . This result is based on the following triangulation theorem: Every unipotent algebraic subgroup of with a dense orbit in is conjugate to a subgroup of the de Jonquières subgroup . Furthermore, we give an example of a free subgroup generated by two algebraic elements such that the Zariski closure is a free product of two nested commutative closed unipotent ind‐subgroups. To any affine ind‐group , one can associate a canonical ideal . It is linearly generated by the tangent spaces for all algebraic subsets that are smooth in . It has the important property that for a surjective homomorphism , the induced homomorphism is surjective as well. Moreover, if is a subnormal closed ind‐subgroup of finite codimension, then has finite codimension in .

Abstract:Suppose $G$ is a $\mathcal{T}$-group (finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent) with centralizers outside of the derived subgroup being abelian of rank equal to $\text{rank}(Z_1)+1$. This includes the class of free nilpotent groups $\mathcal{N}_{r,c}$ of a given rank $r$ and class $c$. It is shown that the upper and lower central series coincide in such groups and from this that they are metabelian. We then prove that all such groups arise as semidirect products of free abelian groups with respect to representation $[G,G]\to \text{UT}(n,\mathbb{Z})$ by automorphisms constructed from integer powers of elements in defining relations we call integral weights of $G$.

Abstract:Let $G = Spec A$ be an affine $K$-group scheme and $\tilde{A} = \{w \in A*: dim_K A^* \cdot w \cdot A^* < \infty \}$. Let $< -,-> : A^* \times \tilde{A} \to K, (w,\tilde{w}) := tr(w \tilde{w})$, be the trace form. We prove that $G$ is linearly reductive if and only if the trace form is non-degenerate on $A^*$.

A Lie group corresponding to the free Lie algebra and its universality

Abstract:Consider the real free Lie algebra $\mathfrak{fr}_n$ with generators $\omega_1$, \dots, $\omega_n$. Since it is positively graded, it has acompletion $\overline{\mathfrak{fr}}_n$ consisting of formal series. By the Campbell-Hausdorff formula, we have a corresponding Lie group $\overline{\mathrm{Fr}}_n$. It is the set $\exp\bigl(\overline{\mathfrak{fr}}_n\bigr)$ in the completed universal enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak{fr}_n$. Also, the group $\overline{\mathrm{Fr}}_n$ is a 'submanifold' in the algebra of formal associative noncommutative series in $\omega_1$, \dots, $\omega_n$, the 'submanifold' is determined by a certain system of quadratic equations. In this note, we consider a certain dense subgroup $\mathrm{Fr}_n^\infty\subset \overline{\mathrm{Fr}}_n$ with a stronger topology and show that any surjective homomorphism from $\mathfrak{fr}_n$ to a real finite-dimensional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ lifts to a surjective homomorphism from $\mathrm{Fr}_n^\infty$ to the corresponding simply connected Lie group $G$. Note that Pestov (1993) constructed a separable Banach-Lie group such that any separable Banach-Lie group is its quotient.

Abstract:Let G be a nilpotent π-group of finite rank,α and β be two automorphisms of G.Suppose that 1 = ζ0G < ζ1G < ··· < ζcG = G is the upper central series of G,and αi and βi are the automorphisms of ζiG/ζi-1G induced by α and β,respectively.If Im(αiβi-βiαi) is either a cyclic group or T ♁ D,where T is a cyclic group and D is a divisible group of rank 1,then <α,β> is NAF-.In particular,if α and β are two π'-automorphisms of G,then(i) in the case Im(αiβi-βiαi) is cyclic,<α,β> is an extension of a finite nilpotent π-group by a finite abelian π'-group;(ii) in the case Im(αiβi-βiαi) is either a cyclic group or T ♁ D,<α,β> is a residually finite π ∪ π'-group and is a(finitely-generated torsion-free nilpotent group)by-(finite nilpotent π-group)-by-(finite abelian π'-group).In addition,we investigate the dual problem for the lower central series of G and obtain the dual results.

Abstract:We compute explicitly the automorphism and outer automorphism group of all large-type free-of-infinity Artin groups. Our strategy involves reconstructing the associated Deligne complexes in a purely algebraic manner, i.e. in a way that is independent from the choice of standard generators for the groups.
