Abstract:We explore the possibility of using free (as opposed to driven) oscillations to verify wire tension in large, open-frame multiwire planes. Using finite-element simulation we predict the signal when two wires are set in motion by applying and holding a DC voltage between them (electrostatic excitation). The resulting current signal is marginal. However, the program relates voltage, oscillation amplitude and signal, and it is easy to get enough amplitude (of order microns) by gently tapping the wire frame. We perform an end-to-end experimental test. Four 1.5m wires, at various tensions around 5N, are mounted in an aluminum channel. They are connected to a low-noise, balanced current-to-voltage preamp designed for good common-mode rejection. The 150V bias, from 9V batteries in series, is built into the preamp. Data are taken with a Tektronix 1202B scope, stored on a USB flash drive, and transferred to a laptop computer for analysis. Ten measurements, each with 2500 samples spanning 1s, are taken for each of the three wire pairs. The wires are excited by tapping the frame with a small mallet. Because the wire tensions are different, the waveforms exhibit beats. The data are analyzed by a program which decomposes the waveform step by step to extract the base and beat frequencies and thereby, two resonant frequencies per wire pair. Finally, those frequencies are disambiguated to obtain the frequency for each wire, which is then converted to a tension. The four tensions are then found mechanically by measuring the g/mm required to deflect each wire at its midpoint. The two values of tension agree well. We conclude that the method verifies tension to approximately 2% (1 sigma) in a little over 1s for 1.5m wires, and would be faster for shorter wires.

Abstract:This paper reports the development of a method for measuring the absorption coefficient of a material specimen mounted at one end of a planar wave tube using a dynamic microphone at the other end. In the proposed method, the dynamic microphone mounted is used as an actuator (loudspeaker) to generate sound waves and simultaneously performs as a probe to sense acoustic impedance at the same point. For the electro-mechanical acoustical system formed by the dynamic microphone and the tube, a "transduction matrix" is introduced to relate the input electrical variables (voltage and current) and the output acoustical variables (pressure and particle velocity). Measurements of fully-reflected end, anechoic end and a porous material specimen are carried out and compared to the results obtained by the conventional transfer function method. It is found that the results match well with each other in a frequency depending on the length of the tube. In addition to the obvious medical application-in-situ and non-invasive detecting health conditions of eardrum, the method can be utilized in industrial applications where simple and portable apparatus are needed to characterize acoustic materials in-situ and on site.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a noncontact, acousto-electromagnetic approach for the measurement of mechanical resonance. An acoustic wave is used to vibrate the device under test (DUT), and the vibration is then detected by an active radio frequency sensor. Because both the vibration and detection are performed in a noncontact way and therefore have no external impact on the DUT's mechanical resonance, the DUT's natural zero-loaded resonance frequency can thus be precisely measured.

Abstract:The ultra-low mass cylindrical drift chamber designed for the MEG II experiment is a challenging apparatus made of 1728 phi = 20 micron gold plated tungsten sense wires, 7680 phi = 40 micron and 2496 phi = 50 micron silver plated aluminum field wires. Because of electrostatic stability requirements all the wires have to be stretched at mechanical tensions of about 25, 19 and 29 g respectively which must be controlled at a level better than 0.5 g. This chamber is presently in acquisition, but during its construction about 100 field wires broke, because of chemical corrosion induced by the atmospheric humidity. On the basis of the experience gained with this chamber we decided to build a new one, equipped with a different type of wires less sensitive to corrosion. The choice of the new wire required a deep inspection of its characteristics and one of the main tools for doing this is a system for measuring the wire tension by means of the resonant frequency technique, which is described in this paper. The system forces the wires to oscillate by applying a sinusoidal signal at a known frequency, and then measures the variation of the capacitance between a wire and a common ground plane as a function of the external signal frequency. We present the details of the measuring system and the results obtained by scanning the mechanical tensions of two samples of MEG II cylindrical drift chamber wires and discuss the possible improvements of the experimental apparatus and of the measuring technique.

Abstract:The tensioning forces applied to the contact wire in a railway catenary system influence the performance of the line. In this paper, a method to monitor the status of such tensioning forces is proposed based on the dependency that the waves that propagate through a tensioned wire have on the forces that pull the wire itself. A novel analytical formulation for the propagation of waves in a tensioned wire was proposed, and it was used to obtain the vertical acceleration of the wire when an external force acts as a concentrated input. The analysis of the acceleration with a moving standard deviation allowed a method to be defined for the generation of an index that describes the trend of the tensioning forces. The method was then tested on the wire accelerations obtained with laboratory tests and, afterwards, on the accelerations recorded on a contact wire of an electric railway regularly in operation and excited with the same kind of input.

Abstract:In order to measure the hydrodynamic force on the free surface-piercing cylinder at a yawed angle, a new force measurement instrument with three tension-compression sensors was developed, and the anemometer output voltage was collected in a PC through a data acquisition card with Labview software, the measuring accuracy for three tension-compression sensors are +/- 0.03% respectively, the sampling rate used was 100HZ, the single length being 180s. The precision of the force measurement instrumentwas checked by comparing to the published results in terms of drag coefficient of the vertical cylinder at Reynolds number from 0.75 x10(4) to 2.2 x10(4), and using the weight, together with the buoyant force acting on the cylinderto valid the precision of the measurement instrument as the hydrodynamic force on the cylinder at an angle of incidence from -30 degrees to 30 degrees. The results show that the new instrument has a high precision for measuring the hydraulic force both on the vertical cylinder and the cylinder at an angle of incidence from -30 degrees to 30 degrees.

Abstract:In ultrasonic non-destructive testing technology, the method to detect the stress of metal plates using longitudinal critically refracted waves (L<sub>CR</sub>) is increasingly developing, in which the calculation of acoustoelastic coefficient of the metal plate is indispensable. However, due to the influence of the metallic material's in-service environment on acoustoelastic coefficient, the existing calculation method of the acoustoelastic coefficient cannot meet the engineering requirements. Therefore, an inline measurement method based on electromagnetic loading is proposed in this paper. The calculation formula for the inline measurement of acoustoelastic coefficient is derived. An electromagnetic loading experimental platform is designed, including an electromagnetic loading module, an ultrasonic detecting module, and a delay control module. The loading test of a 1060 aluminum plate is carried out using the designed platform. The flight time of L<sub>CR</sub> waves is measured experimentally and used in the calculation formula of acoustoelastic coefficient. The experimental results of acoustoelastic coefficient meet the accuracy requirement of less than 5%, which can be used for stress measurement. So, the inline measurement method of acoustoelastic coefficient proposed in this paper is feasible.

Abstract:For the reliable assessment of bridge health and safety conditions, it is crucial to identify fundamental frequencies of suspender real time and automatically from random vibration signal that is weak and interfered with noise when suspender tension is measured online by frequency method. According to the characteristics of vibration signal spectrum, auto-power spectrum combined with autocorrelation function method which result was periodic distribution of spectral information in frequency domain. Plus from the spectrum the resonant peak of suspender was highlighted to reduce the noise disturbance which helped identify fundamental frequency and improved identification effect and result precision. In addition a field experiment in a tied arch bridge was carried out to analyze the collected vibration data. The practical application shows that this kind of measurement method is feasible and useful.

Abstract:The normal incidence absorption coefficient of acoustic materials can be measured inside an impedance tube with different settings for the microphone(s). The two most widespread techniques are the standing wave method using a probe microphone and side-mounted two-microphone techniques. Errors that can occur here are related to phase mismatch between the two microphones and the knowledge of the exact locations of the (acoustic centre of the) microphones and test sample. These problems have (partially) been solved by, for example, calibrating the microphones by swapping them and calculating a calibration transfer function or by using one microphone techniques. In this article we will present a novel technique which will also avoid the need for the knowledge of the exact microphone location by continuously moving the sample under test. Different results will be presented and compared to the traditional techniques.

Abstract:Acoustic microfluidics (or acoustofluidics) provides a non-contact and label-free means to manipulate and interrogate bioparticles. Owing to their biocompatibility and precision, acoustofluidic approaches have enabled innovations in various areas of biomedical research. Future breakthroughs will rely on the translation of these techniques from academic labs to clinical and industrial settings. Here, accurate characterization and standardization of device performance are crucial. Versatile, rapid, and widely accessible performance quantification is needed. We propose a field quantification method using motile Chlamydomonas reinhardtii algae cells. We previously reported qualitative mapping of acoustic fields using living microswimmers as active probes. In the present study, we extend our approach to achieve the challenging quantitative in situ measurement of the acoustic energy density. C. reinhardtii cells continuously swim in an imposed force field and dynamically redistribute as the field changes. This behavior allows accurate and complete, real-time performance monitoring, which can be easily applied and adopted within the acoustofluidics and broader microfluidics research communities. Additionally, the approach relies only on standard bright-field microscopy to assess the field under numerous conditions within minutes. We benchmark the method against conventional passive-particle tracking, achieving agreement within 1% for field strengths from 0 to 70 J m−3 (from 0 to ∼0.8 MPa).

The Practicality of Using Generic Acoustical Equipment in Impedance Tube Design

Abstract:The impedance tube method is commonly employed to measure the acoustical properties of materials, but commercial versions are prohibitively expensive for researchers lacking access to well-funded acoustical laboratories. A significant expense in traditional impedance tube setups is the pressure field microphones. This study explores the feasibility of using low-cost consumer-grade electret microphones, which are substantially cheaper than their pressure field counterparts. Our impedance tube design was validated and tested with high-cost pressure field microphones, contrasting it with electret microphones priced under one US dollar (USD). The findings reveal that the sound absorption coefficient can still be effectively and accurately measured using inexpensive microphones, subject to suitable signal conditioning and accurate microphone calibration. The trade-off is a slight loss of accuracy for the low-end frequency range of < 250 Hz.

Abstract:In-situ stress exists in all rock mass or structures, which is reflected in the deformation and failure of various underground or ground excavation in geotechnical engineering. In-situ widely used in the engineering practice, in-situ stress monitoring plays an important role in many aspects, such as mine development, slope support, and geological disaster prevention and control, etc. Strain gauge has been used to record rock deformation using Differential strain analysis (DSA), Hollow Inclusion Technique (CSIRO Cells), and other in-situ stress measurement techniques. Limited by the volume, cost, power, and connection scheme of the measuring instruments, the test data are always influenced by various immeasurable factors, such as bend of the measuring cable and change in the ambient temperature. Majority of the gauge measurement technologies are not suitable for in-situ stress monitoring because of the stability of strain gauge measurement is poor, limits the application range of the gauge measurement. A stable strain gauge measurement method can be used for medium to high-precision in-situ stress monitoring to serve various engineering developments. We made a new measurement scheme by using high-precision constant current with independent signal transmission channels to achieve a high stability and high-resolution strain gauge measurement circuit with low power consumption and space cost. The temperature drift is as low as 0.3 με/°C in 0°C–60°C temperature range at 8000 με strain input, which can achieve the measurement effect of the traditional desktop strain gauge in about 1/10th volume and very low cost. The error caused by the change of cable resistance is reduced to 1 ppm, and the error caused by the disconnection and reconnection is less than 1 με, which avoids the failures caused by various environmental factors in the monitoring process, and the installation distance of monitoring strain gauge can reach tens of meters. This creates conducive conditions for using traditional in-situ stress measurement technology with in-situ stress monitoring and establishes an efficient and low-cost in-situ stress monitoring system.

Abstract:A new approach to the technique of scanning by wires is developed. Novelty of the method is that the wire heating quantity is used as a source of information about the number of interacting particles. To increase the accuracy and sensitivity of measurements the wire heating measurement is regenerated as a change of wire natural oscillations frequency. By the rigid fixing of the wire ends on the base an unprecedented sensitivity of the frequency to the temperature and to the corresponding flux of colliding particles. The range of used frequencies (tens of kHz) and speed of processes of heat transfer limit the speed characteristics of proposed scanning method, however, the high sensitivity make it a perspective one for investigation of beam halo and weak beam scanning. Traditional beam profile monitors generally focus on the beam core and loose sensitivity in the halo region where a large dynamic range of detection is necessary. The scanning by a vibrating wire can be also successfully used in profiling and detecting of neutron and photon beams.

Abstract:Harmonic and transient eddy currents in a liquid metal positioned above an excitation coil are determined by measuring the voltage drop in a simple potential probe. The resulting spatio-temporal eddy current field is compared with the corresponding analytical expressions for a conducting half-space. Further, a deformation of the eddy current distribution due to a non-conducting torus immersed into the liquid metal is measured and compared with numerical results. The method can be generalized to arbitrary geometries, and might help to validate numerical models for non-destructive testing and magnetic inductance tomography.

Abstract:We investigate the Stark shift in Rydberg rubidium atoms through electromagnetically induced transparency for the measurement of direct current (dc) and 60 Hz alternating current (ac) voltages. This technique has direct application to the calibration of voltage measurement instrumentation. We present experimental results for different atomic states that allow for dc and ac voltage measurements ranging from 0 to 12 V. While the state-of-the-art method for realizing the volt, the Josephson voltage standard, is significantly more accurate, the Rydberg atom-based method presented here has the potential to be a calibration standard with more favorable size, weight, power, and cost. We discuss the steps necessary to develop the Rydberg atom-based voltage measurement as a complementary method for dissemination of the voltage scale directly to the end user and discuss sources of uncertainties for these types of experiments.
Pulsed-Mode Magnetic Field Measurements with a Single Stretched Wire System

Abstract:In synchrotrons, accurate knowledge of the magnetic field generated by bending dipole magnets is essential to ensure beam stability. Measurement campaigns are necessary to characterize the field. The choice of the measurement method for such campaigns is determined by the combination of magnet dimensions and operating conditions and typically require a trade-off between accuracy and versatility. The single stretched wire (SSW) is a well-known, polyvalent method to measure the integral field of magnets having a wide range of geometries. It, however, requires steady-state excitation. This work presents a novel implementation of this method called pulsed SSW, which allows the system to measure rapidly time-varying magnetic fields, as is often needed, to save power or gain beam time. We first introduce the measurement principle of the pulsed SSW, followed by a combined strategy to calculate the absolute magnetic field by incorporating the classic DC SSW method. Using a bending magnet from the Proton Synchrotron Booster located at the European Organization for Nuclear Research as a case study, we validate the pulsed SSW method and compare its dynamic measurement capabilities to a fixed induction coil, showing thereby how the coil calibration must be adjusted according to the field level. Finally, we assess the method's measurement accuracy using the standard SSW as a reference and present an analysis of the primary noise contributors.

Abstract:DC electric fields can combine with test mass charging and thermal dielectric voltage noise to create significant force noise acting on the drag-free test masses in the LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) gravitational wave mission. This paper proposes a simple technique to measure and compensate average stray DC potentials at the mV level, yielding substantial reduction in this source of force noise. We discuss the attainable resolution for both flight and ground based experiments.

Abstract:The Acoustic Emission (AE) phenomenon has been used as a powerful tool with the purpose to either detect, locate or assess damage for a wide range of applications. Derived from its monitoring, one major current challenge on the analysis of the acquired signal is the proper identification and separation of each AE event. Current advanced methods for detecting events are primarily focused on identifying with high accuracy the beginning of the AE wave; however, the detection of the conclusion has been disregarded in the literature. For an automatic continuous detection of events within a data stream, this lack of accuracy for the conclusion of the events generates errors in two critical aspects. In one hand, it deteriorates the accuracy of the measurement of the events duration, truncating the span of the event (undesirable in evaluation applications), and in the other hand, it causes false detections. In this work, an accurate and computationally efficient AE activity detector is presented, using a framework inspired by the area of speech processing, and which provides the required indicators to accurately detect the onset and the end of an AE event. This is achieved by means of a threshold approach that instead of directly operates with the transduced voltage signal it does so over the Short-Term Energy and the Short-Term Zero-Crossing Rate measures of the signal. The STE-ZCR method is developed for an application related to the continuous monitoring of a single AE channel derived from the characterization of metallic components by means of a uniaxial tensile test. Additionally, two experimental test-benches are implemented with the aim to quantify the accuracy and the quality of event detection of the presented method. Finally, the obtained results are compared with four different techniques, representing the current state of the art related to AE activity detection.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel bead-falling measurement method for the precise and efficient mapping of electromagnetic fields within radio-frequency (RF) cavities, which are crucial components in the design of accelerators. The traditional bead-pull method, while effective, involves mechanical complexities and is prone to errors from wire perturbations. The innovative method reported here leverages the simplicity and accuracy of free-falling beads to mitigate these issues. This technique eliminates the need for a wire-pulley system, thereby simplifying the experimental setup and reducing potential mechanical errors. We detail the development and operational principles of this new method, including the design of a compact, portable measurement device that integrates a bead/droplet release system and a bead detection system linked to a Vector Network Analyzer (VNA). The device has been tested with a three-gap buncher cavity and a scaled Alvarez-type cavity, demonstrating its ability to perform rapid, reliable field measurements under various challenging conditions, including low signal-to-noise ratios and environmental vibrations. The results confirm the method's superiority in precision and operational efficiency, potentially setting a new standard for RF cavity diagnostics and tuning.
