Abstract:The invention of AI-Chatbot is undeniably one of the most remarkable achievements by humanity, harnessing an unparalleled level of power and potential. In the near future, AI-chatbots are expected to become valuable tools in education, aiding students in their learning journeys. This study aims to explore the performance and accuracy of two chatbots, ChatGPT and Bard in understanding text-based structural notations such as, condensed structures, InChi and SMILES and answering organic chemistry related questions. Their ability to perform tasks such as converting IUPAC names, InChi, and SMILES notations into condensed forms and vice versa, identifying functional groups, generating molecular formulas, and predicting resonance patterns was studied. The ChatGPTs' accuracy percentages for various tasks are as follows: determining degree of unsaturation from molecular formulas (90-80%), InChi (79-64%), and SMILES (86-64%); identifying functional groups from condensed structures (94%) and InChi (65-50%); converting condensed structures to molecular formulas (86-73%), IUPAC (38%), InChi (22-17%), and SMILES (56-44%); converting InChi to IUPAC (65-50%) and condensed structures (28-11%); and converting SMILES to condensed structures (42-37%) and IUPAC (25-20%). In contrast, Bard consistently performed lower in most tasks. Both chatbots had significant limitations, especially with InChi and SMILES notations which have been used successfully in machine learning. GPT-4, the newer version of ChatGPT, was also tested against these tasks, and slight improvements were observed in most areas, particularly in reading SMILES notations. While these advanced AI-chatbots hold promising potential as enduring educational tools in organic chemistry, inspiring reevaluation of teaching strategies, their implementation should be carefully monitored, particularly considering the rapid pace of advancements.

Abstract:This research delves into the comparative advantages of Generative AI chatbots (GenAIbots) -- ChatGPT, Bing Chat, Bard, and Claude -- in the context of Chemistry education, framed within a constructivist perspective. Our primary objective was to identify which of these four AI tools is more effective for enhancing Chemistry learning. Employing a single-case study approach, we scrutinised interaction logs between the AI systems and a simulated student persona during Chemistry learning simulations, incorporating Content Analysis methodology to delve deeper into the discourse. Our findings underscore these tools' potential as "agents-to-think-with", enhancing critical thinking, problem-solving, comprehension, creativity, and tailored learning. Especially noteworthy is their ability to stimulate learners through Socratic-like questioning, aligning with constructionist principles. The research emphasises the pivotal role of prompt crafting to coax desired responses from GenAIbots, engendering iterative reflections. It also highlights the need for robust educator training to infuse these technologies into educational settings. Conclusively, while ChatGPT, Bing Chat, Bard, and Claude are poised to enrich Chemistry education by fostering dynamic, inclusive learning experiences, ChatGPT stood out, decisively surpassing Bing Chat in its performance. Bard and Claude trailed closely, with all three showcasing a more in-depth, precise, and nuanced understanding, underscoring ChatGPT's adeptness at contextual comprehension.

Abstract:The artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT was used to answer questions from final exams administered in two general chemistry courses, including questions with closed-response format and with open-response format. For closed-response questions, ChatGPT was very capable at identifying the concept even when the question included a great deal of chemical symbolism. However, ChatGPT’s success at solving problems was only 44%, a value well below the class average of 69%. On open-response questions, ChatGPT’s responses displayed strong language processing ability with higher performance on questions that could be solved with more generalizable information compared to questions that required specific skills, especially when those topics or skills were primarily found in lecture. Incorrect responses and flawed explanations were often logically sound and would be persuasive to a novice. The chatbot is currently ill-equipped to provide reliable answers or explanations to students for many representative exam questions, but a potential use is to create assignments in which students analyze and improve ChatGPT’s responses.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has the potential to revolutionize the education sector. This study sought to determine the efficacy of ChatGPT to correctly answer questions a learner would use and to elucidate how the AI was processing potential prompts. Our goal was to evaluate the role of prompt formats, response consistency, and reliability of ChatGPT responses. Analyzing prompt format, we see that the data do not demonstrate a statistically significant difference between multiple-choice and free-response questions. Neither format achieved scores higher than 37%, and testing at different locations did not improve scores. Interestingly, ChatGPT’s free version provides accurate responses to discipline-specific questions that contain information from unrelated topics as distractors, improving its accuracy over the free-response questions. It is important to consider, while ChatGPT can identify the correct answer within a given context, it may not be able to determine if the answer it selects is correct computationally or through analysis. The results of this study can guide future AI and ChatGPT training practices and implementations to ensure they are used to their fullest potential.

Abstract:Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) is here; now what? In this commentary, we discuss the potential impacts of GAI text-based systems for the chemistry community. The recent launch of ChatGPT, a free GAI text-based system by OpenAI, has sparked concerns regarding academic integrity and student assessment across all educational levels. However, the capabilities of these systems will impact more than the teaching and learning of chemistry; GAI systems can serve students, faculty, and administrators for teaching and learning, research, and professional activities. Herein we explore various ways students and faculty might use GAI systems, identify potential benefits and risks, and consider equity and accessibility issues. Abstract:Historical emphasis on writing mastery has shifted with advances in generative AI, especially in scientific writing. This study analysed six AI chatbots for scholarly writing in humanities and archaeology. Using methods that assessed factual correctness and scientific contribution, ChatGPT-4 showed the highest quantitative accuracy, closely followed by ChatGPT-3.5, Bing, and Bard. However, Claude 2 and Aria scored considerably lower. Qualitatively, all AIs exhibited proficiency in merging existing knowledge, but none produced original scientific content. Inter-estingly, our findings suggest ChatGPT-4 might represent a plateau in large language model size. This research emphasizes the unique, intricate nature of human research, suggesting that AI's emulation of human originality in scientific writing is challenging. As of 2023, while AI has transformed content generation, it struggles with original contributions in humanities. This may change as AI chatbots continue to evolve into LLM-powered software.

ChatGPT Chemistry Assistant for Text Mining and Prediction of MOF Synthesis

Abstract:We use prompt engineering to guide ChatGPT in the automation of text mining of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesis conditions from diverse formats and styles of the scientific literature. This effectively mitigates ChatGPT's tendency to hallucinate information -- an issue that previously made the use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in scientific fields challenging. Our approach involves the development of a workflow implementing three different processes for text mining, programmed by ChatGPT itself. All of them enable parsing, searching, filtering, classification, summarization, and data unification with different tradeoffs between labor, speed, and accuracy. We deploy this system to extract 26,257 distinct synthesis parameters pertaining to approximately 800 MOFs sourced from peer-reviewed research articles. This process incorporates our ChemPrompt Engineering strategy to instruct ChatGPT in text mining, resulting in impressive precision, recall, and F1 scores of 90-99%. Furthermore, with the dataset built by text mining, we constructed a machine-learning model with over 86% accuracy in predicting MOF experimental crystallization outcomes and preliminarily identifying important factors in MOF crystallization. We also developed a reliable data-grounded MOF chatbot to answer questions on chemical reactions and synthesis procedures. Given that the process of using ChatGPT reliably mines and tabulates diverse MOF synthesis information in a unified format, while using only narrative language requiring no coding expertise, we anticipate that our ChatGPT Chemistry Assistant will be very useful across various other chemistry sub-disciplines.

The chatbot can solve a variety of tasks and questions. It can handle complex tasks, which it processes extensively and (partly) correctly. These new possibilities present a new situation for teaching and learning, in which an AI solves tasks for students. The article discusses what new challenges this technology raises for teaching and learning in chemistry education. For this purpose, the chatbot is assigned two sample tasks on surfactants.

Abstract:The advent of chatbots raises the possibility of a paradigm shift in many disciplines of scientific research. Here, 13 photochemically relevant queries were posed to five chatbots. The queries include fundamental concepts, practical or philosophical matters, and properties of dyes. The chatbot responses ranged from moderately effective to glaringly deficient, with instances of a correct response embedded in scientific nonsense or even entirely meaningless responses. Chatbots are complementary to search engines and may comprise a useful tool for scientific research in the hands of a domain expert. The unreliable accuracy makes present chatbots unsuited for unguided educational purposes in photochemistry. The advent of chatbots raises the possibility of a paradigm shift across society including the most technical of fields with regard to access to information, generation of knowledge, and dissemination of education and training. Photochemistry is a scientific endeavor with roots in chemistry and physics and branches that encompass diverse disciplines ranging from astronomy to zoology. Here, five chatbots have each been challenged with 13 photochemically relevant queries. The chatbots included ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4.0, Copilot, Gemini Advanced, and Meta AI. The queries encompassed fundamental concepts (e.g., "Why is the fluorescence spectrum typically the mirror image of the absorption spectrum?"), practical matters (e.g., "What is the inner filter effect and how to avoid it?"), philosophical matters ("Please create the most important photochemistry questions."), and specific molecular features (e.g., "Why are azo dyes non‐fluorescent?"). The chatbots were moderately effective in answering queries concerning fundamental concepts in photochemistry but were glaringly deficient in specialized queries for dyes and fluorophores. In some instances, a correct response was embedded in verbose scientific nonsense whereas in others the entire response, while grammatically correct, was utterly meaningless. The unreliable accuracy makes present chatbots poorly suited for unaided educational purposes and highlights the importance of domain experts.

Abstract:Chemistry education research demonstrates the value of open-ended writing tasks, such as writing-to-learn (WTL) assignments, for supporting students’ learning with topics including reasoning about reaction mechanisms. The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology, such as chatbots ChatGPT and Bard, raises concerns regarding the value of open-ended writing tasks in the classroom; one concern involves academic integrity and whether students will use these chatbots to produce sufficient responses to open-ended writing tasks. The present study investigates the degree to which generative AI chatbots exhibit mechanistic reasoning in response to organic chemistry WTL assignments. We produced responses from three generative AI chatbots (ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, and Bard) to two WTL assignments developed to elicit students’ mechanistic reasoning. Using previously reported machine learning models for analyzing student writing in response to the WTL assignments, we analyzed the chatbot responses for the inclusion of features pertinent to mechanistic reasoning. Herein, we report quantitative analyses of (1) the differences between chatbot responses on the two assignments and (2) the differences between chatbot and authentic student responses. Findings indicate that chatbots respond differently to different WTL assignments. Additionally, the chatbots rarely incorporated the discussion of electron movement, a key feature of mechanistic reasoning. Furthermore, the chatbots, in general, do not engage in mechanistic reasoning at the same level as students. We contextualize the results by considering academic integrity with the assumption that students’ intentions are to engage in academically honest behavior, and we focus on understanding the ethical uses of generative AI for classroom assignments.

Abstract:The chemistry education research community values and emphasizes the role of constructing explanations and mechanistic reasoning to support students’ learning of organic chemistry. Emerging large language model (LLM) and generative artificial intelligence (GAI) technologies are uniquely equipped to advance the teaching and learning of chemistry. GAI-based chatbots, such as ChatGPT, have the potential to help students learn mechanistic reasoning through their generated responses. This study investigates the extent to which 255 ChatGPT-generated responses are accurate explanations of 85 different reaction mechanisms and exhibit mechanistic reasoning as categorized by the levels of explanation sophistication framework. The study also explores the effects of prompt engineering on mechanism accuracy and explanation sophistication through three types of prompt cueing. Study findings show that (1) a quarter of responses are fully accurate explanations of reaction mechanisms and the majority contain predominantly accurate explanations of chemical phenomena and identification of nucleophiles and electrophiles, (2) responses exhibit high levels of explanation sophistication, and (3) prompt engineering plays a significant role in eliciting high levels of explanation sophistication but not mechanism description accuracy. Results are situated in mechanistic reasoning and prompt engineering frameworks with a focus on how these new technologies can be integrated into the chemistry classroom.

Abstract:ChatGPT has become a very popular artificial intelligence tool recently, with the ability to “chat” with human beings. It can perform some challenging tasks such as writing essays, coding, composing, painting, etc. While the roles of ChatGPT in helping with literature reviews and language editing have been widely debated, the potential applications of ChatGPT in computational materials science have yet to be discussed. Herein, we will briefly discuss 3 aspects that ChatGPT could potentially be applied for computational materials science, i.e., building structures, writing codes for specific scientific software, and preparing data visualization scripts. It is found that while ChatGPT can make some simple mistakes when trying to accomplish general tasks, it has the ability to learn from our words when interacting with us. Meanwhile, we should also pay attention to some problems such as the consistency of the output, hidden errors, and ethical concerns. We hope that this perspective will spur further interest in the potential applications of ChatGPT in computational materials science.

Abstract:Student performance on open-response calculations involving acid and base solutions before and after instruction in general chemistry and analytical chemistry courses was compared with the output from the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT. Applying a theoretical model of expertise for problem solving that includes problem conceptualization, problem strategy, and solution, it is found that students errors following instruction primarily involved problem conceptualization and the misapplication of heuristics like the Henderson–Hasselbalch equation When the same problems were used as input to ChatGPT the responses were comparable to worked examples found in general chemistry textbooks in terms of length and detail and usually displayed strong problem conceptualization. Response accuracy of the chatbot varied greatly for different topics, being best for calculations of pH for a strong acid or strong base and much lower for more complex problems involving titrations or aqueous salts. Chatbot and student errors differed in that the chatbot did not misapply heuristics but did make mathematical errors uncommon for students. The variability in the correctness of ChatGPT’s responses and the nature of its errors vis-à-vis students will influence its potential use as an instructional resource for calculations involving acids and bases.

Abstract:Emerging studies underscore the promising capabilities of large language model-based chatbots in conducting basic bioinformatics data analyses. The recent feature of accepting image inputs by ChatGPT, also known as GPT-4V(ision), motivated us to explore its efficacy in deciphering bioinformatics scientific figures. Our evaluation with examples in cancer research, including sequencing data analysis, multimodal network-based drug repositioning, and tumor clonal evolution, revealed that ChatGPT can proficiently explain different plot types and apply biological knowledge to enrich interpretations. However, it struggled to provide accurate interpretations when color perception and quantitative analysis of visual elements were involved. Furthermore, while the chatbot can draft figure legends and summarize findings from the figures, stringent proofreading is imperative to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the content.
