Abstract:Despite the buzz around ChatGPT's potential, empirical studies exploring its actual utility in the classroom for learning remain scarce. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the lesson plans developed by 29 pre-service elementary teachers from a Korean university and assessing how they integrated ChatGPT into science learning activities. We first examined how the subject domains and teaching and learning methods/strategies were integrated with ChatGPT in the lesson plans. We then evaluated the lesson plans using a modified TPACK-based rubric. We further examined pre-service teachers' perceptions and concerns about integrating ChatGPT into science learning. Results show diverse applications of ChatGPT in different science domains. Fourteen types of teaching and learning methods/strategies were identified in the lesson plans. On average, the pre-service teachers' lesson plans scored high on the modified TPACK-based rubric, indicating a reasonable envisage of integrating ChatGPT into science learning, particularly in 'instructional strategies & ChatGPT'. However, they scored relatively lower on exploiting ChatGPT's functions toward its full potential compared to other aspects. The study also identifies both appropriate and inappropriate use cases of ChatGPT in lesson planning. Pre-service teachers anticipated ChatGPT to afford high-quality questioning, self-directed learning, individualized learning support, and formative assessment. Meanwhile, they also expressed concerns about its accuracy and the risks that students may be overly dependent on ChatGPT. They further suggested solutions to systemizing classroom dynamics between teachers and students. The study underscores the need for more research on the roles of generative AI in actual classroom settings and provides insights for future AI-integrated science learning.

Abstract:In response to the limitations of the traditional education and teaching model, this article proposes a smart education model based on ChatGPT. The model actively breaks the constraint of time and space and the design patterns of traditional education, providing smart education services including personalized learning, smart tutoring and evaluation, educational content creation support, and education big data analysis. Through constructing an open and inclusive learning space and creating flexible and diverse educational models, ChatGPT can help to meet students’ individuality and overall development, as well as assist teachers in keeping up with the students’ learning performance and developmental requirements in real-time. This provides an important basis for optimizing teaching content, offering personalized and accurate cultivation, and planning the development path of students.

Abstract:This study investigates the effectiveness of project-based learning (PBL) in enhancing teacher technology proficiency, using ChatGPT as a case study. The research involved engaging teachers in technology- driven projects, supported by ChatGPT, to evaluate improvements in their digital tool usage and instructional methods. Findings reveal that teachers significantly improved their technology integration skills, exhibited higher confidence, and provided positive feedback on the hands-on, collaborative learning process. Specific applications of ChatGPT, such as personalized tutoring and content creation, were highly valued. The study highlights the potential of PBL and AI tools like ChatGPT in advancing professional development for educators. Recommendations for educational policy and future research are also discussed.
Embrace Opportunities and Face Challenges: Using ChatGPT in Undergraduate Students' Collaborative Interdisciplinary Learning

Abstract:ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, has gained widespread attention from students and educators globally, with an online report by Hu (2023) stating it as the fastest-growing consumer application in history. While discussions on the use of ChatGPT in higher education are abundant, empirical studies on its impact on collaborative interdisciplinary learning are rare. To investigate its potential, we conducted a quasi-experimental study with 130 undergraduate students (STEM and non-STEM) learning digital literacy with or without ChatGPT over two weeks. Weekly surveys were conducted on collaborative interdisciplinary problem-solving, physical and cognitive engagement, and individual reflections on ChatGPT use. Analysis of survey responses showed significant main effects of topics on collaborative interdisciplinary problem-solving and physical and cognitive engagement, a marginal interaction effect between disciplinary backgrounds and ChatGPT conditions for cognitive engagement, and a significant interaction effect for physical engagement. Sentiment analysis of student reflections suggested no significant difference between STEM and non-STEM students' opinions towards ChatGPT. Qualitative analysis of reflections generated eight positive themes, including efficiency, addressing knowledge gaps, and generating human-like responses, and eight negative themes, including generic responses, lack of innovation, and counterproductive to self-discipline and thinking. Our findings suggest that ChatGPT use needs to be optimized by considering the topics being taught and the disciplinary backgrounds of students rather than applying it uniformly. These findings have implications for both pedagogical research and practices.

Abstract:The rapid era of technological development has had a major impact on the world of education. At least the challenges faced by the education sector are related to the use of Chat GPT artificial intelligence in the science learning process. Through science education, students can engage in the impact of science in everyday life and the role of students in society. The provision of quality science education will have an impact on the development achievements of a country. for this reason, research was carried out. Abstract:This systematic review, adhering to the PRISMA framework, investigated the utilisation of ChatGPT, a language model developed by OpenAI, throughout Kindergarten to 12th grade (K‐12) educational settings. The review synthesises findings from 13 selected papers, encompassing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis of ChatGPT's implementation in K‐12 education, implications for various stakeholders, and practical recommendations. It is highlighted that ChatGPT could empower educators through curriculum, lesson planning, materials generation, differentiation, and optimising student learning experience through personalised learning. However, concerns regarding academic integrity and output quality must be addressed. The paper provides pedagogical recommendations and ethical considerations to utilise ChatGPT better. It contributes to the ongoing discourse about AI, particularly ChatGPT's role in K‐12 education, further inspiring future research and educational practices and facilitating the effective integration of ChatGPT into K‐12 educational settings where collaboration arises as a key role, in particular under the approach of co‐design for learning.

Abstract:ChatGPT has become a very popular artificial intelligence tool recently, with the ability to “chat” with human beings. It can perform some challenging tasks such as writing essays, coding, composing, painting, etc. While the roles of ChatGPT in helping with literature reviews and language editing have been widely debated, the potential applications of ChatGPT in computational materials science have yet to be discussed. Herein, we will briefly discuss 3 aspects that ChatGPT could potentially be applied for computational materials science, i.e., building structures, writing codes for specific scientific software, and preparing data visualization scripts. It is found that while ChatGPT can make some simple mistakes when trying to accomplish general tasks, it has the ability to learn from our words when interacting with us. Meanwhile, we should also pay attention to some problems such as the consistency of the output, hidden errors, and ethical concerns. We hope that this perspective will spur further interest in the potential applications of ChatGPT in computational materials science.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) technology has the potential to revolutionize the education sector. This study sought to determine the efficacy of ChatGPT to correctly answer questions a learner would use and to elucidate how the AI was processing potential prompts. Our goal was to evaluate the role of prompt formats, response consistency, and reliability of ChatGPT responses. Analyzing prompt format, we see that the data do not demonstrate a statistically significant difference between multiple-choice and free-response questions. Neither format achieved scores higher than 37%, and testing at different locations did not improve scores. Interestingly, ChatGPT’s free version provides accurate responses to discipline-specific questions that contain information from unrelated topics as distractors, improving its accuracy over the free-response questions. It is important to consider, while ChatGPT can identify the correct answer within a given context, it may not be able to determine if the answer it selects is correct computationally or through analysis. The results of this study can guide future AI and ChatGPT training practices and implementations to ensure they are used to their fullest potential.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have the potential to completely transform how we teach and learn in higher education. ChatGPT, a language model developed by OpenAI, is one such tool that can deliver individualized recommendations to students, increase collaboration and communication, and improve student learning results. However, there are some obstacles to overcome, such as ethical concerns and implementation issues. This study reviews related work on the use of artificial intelligence in education, with a focus on ChatGPT and its possible applications in higher education. It also examines the benefits and drawbacks of adopting ChatGPT in higher education, as well as implementation advice. Finally, the report discusses future directions for ChatGPT research in higher education. According to the findings of this paper, ChatGPT represents a significant opportunity for higher education institutions to improve the quality and accessibility of education; however, its implementation must be approached with caution and a clear understanding of the opportunities and challenges involved.

Abstract:This paper investigates the integration of ChatGPT into educational environments, focusing on its potential to enhance personalized learning and the ethical concerns it raises. Through a systematic literature review, interest analysis, and case studies, the research scrutinizes the application of ChatGPT in diverse educational contexts, evaluating its impact on teaching and learning practices. The key findings reveal that ChatGPT can significantly enrich education by offering dynamic, personalized learning experiences and real-time feedback, thereby boosting teaching efficiency and learner engagement. However, the study also highlights significant challenges, such as biases in AI algorithms that may distort educational content and the inability of AI to replicate the emotional and interpersonal dynamics of traditional teacher–student interactions. Abstract:To foster the development of pedagogically potent and ethically sound AI-integrated learning landscapes, it is pivotal to critically explore the perceptions and experiences of the users immersed in these contexts. In this study, we perform a thorough qualitative content analysis across four key social media platforms. Our goal is to understand the user experience (UX) and views of early adopters of ChatGPT across different educational sectors. The results of our research show that ChatGPT is most commonly used in the domains of higher education, K-12 education, and practical skills training. In social media dialogues, the topics most frequently associated with ChatGPT are productivity, efficiency, and ethics. Early adopters' attitudes towards ChatGPT are multifaceted. On one hand, some users view it as a transformative tool capable of amplifying student self-efficacy and learning motivation. On the other hand, there is a degree of apprehension among concerned users. They worry about a potential overdependence on the AI system, which they fear might encourage superficial learning habits and erode students' social and critical thinking skills. This dichotomy of opinions underscores the complexity of Human-AI Interaction in educational contexts. Our investigation adds depth to this ongoing discourse, providing crowd-sourced insights for educators and learners who are considering incorporating ChatGPT or similar generative AI tools into their pedagogical strategies.

Abstract:With the widespread use of Generative AI in education, effectively utilizing and integrating it into teaching have become key focal points and challenges in education. Different subjects and target audiences require varied norms and strategies for implementing Generative AI, such as ChatGPT. These differences directly impact the educational integration of Generative AI in various educational contexts. To address these disparities and establish common ground, we propose the concept of ChatGPT literacy to bridge research gaps. In this study, we tailor the concept of ChatGPT literacy specifically for language teachers, aiming to delineate the essential competencies needed to proficiently and ethically use ChatGPT as a language learning and teaching tool. We propose a theoretical framework encompassing six fundamental constructs: benefits, limitations, prompts, evaluation (of ChatGPT responses), assessment (assisted by ChatGPT), and ethics, to comprehensively conceptualise and evaluate ChatGPT literacy. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative survey data from 492 language teachers across 41 countries, we validate the proposed ChatGPT literacy framework by examining teachers' practices and challenges associated with ChatGPT usage. Our analysis of Likert-scale data, utilizing item and confirmatory techniques, confirms the effectiveness of the six-construct framework in defining ChatGPT literacy. In addition, we collected qualitative data through open questions and conducted thematic analysis, demonstrating that ChatGPT has been integrated throughout the instructional cycle, from material preparation to formative and summative assessment phases. These quantitative and qualitative findings have significant implications for a range of stakeholders, including language educators, learners, AI technology developers, and policymakers, providing valuable insights to inform decisions regarding ChatGPT integration in language education. Ultimately, our study equips relevant stakeholders with the necessary competencies to responsibly exploiting ChatGPT's potential in language and other subject areas.

Abstract:This paper investigates the capacity of ChatGPT, an advanced language model created by OpenAI, to mitigate the side effects encountered by learners in Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) within higher education. A series of semi-structured interviews were conducted with six professors and three Information and Communication Technology (ICT) experts. Employing thematic analysis, the interview data were assessed, revealing that the side effects stemming from the learner and learning perspectives could be primarily categorized into cognitive, non-cognitive, and metacognitive challenges. The findings of the thematic analysis indicate that, from a cognitive standpoint, ChatGPT can generate relevant and trustworthy information, furnish personalized learning resources, and facilitate interdisciplinary learning to fully actualize learners' potential. Moreover, ChatGPT can aid learners in cultivating non-cognitive skills, including motivation, perseverance, self-regulation, and self-efficacy, as well as metacognitive abilities such as self-determination, self-efficacy, and self-regulation, by providing tailored feedback, fostering creativity, and stimulating critical thinking activities. This study offers valuable insights for integrating artificial intelligence technologies to unleash the full potential of PLEs in higher education.

ChatGPT and Its Educational Impact: Insights from a Software Development Competition

Abstract:This study explores the integration and impact of ChatGPT, a generative AI that utilizes natural language processing, in an educational environment. The main goal is to evaluate how ChatGPT affects project performance. To this end, we organize a software development competition utilizing ChatGPT, lasting for four weeks and involving 36 students. The competition is structured in two rounds: in the first round, all 36 students participate and are evaluated based on specific performance metrics such as code quality, innovation, and adherence to project requirements. The top 15 performers from the first round are then selected to advance to the second round, where they compete for the final rankings and the overall winner is determined. The competition shows that students who use ChatGPT extensively in various stages of development, including ideation, documentation, software development, and quality assurance, have higher project completion rates and better scores. A detailed comparative analysis between first-round and second-round winners reveals significant differences in their experience with generative AI for software development, experience learning large-scale language models, and interest in their respective fields of study. These findings suggest that ChatGPT enhances individual learning and project performance. A post-survey of participants also reveals high levels of satisfaction, further emphasizing the benefits of integrating generative AI like ChatGPT in academic settings. This study highlights the transformative potential of ChatGPT in project-based learning environments and supports further research into its long-term impact and broader application in a variety of educational contexts.

Examining Science Education in ChatGPT: An Exploratory Study of Generative Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential in the field of education. The study explores three main areas: (1) How did ChatGPT answer questions related to science education? (2) What are some ways educators could utilise ChatGPT in their science pedagogy? and (3) How has ChatGPT been utilised in this study, and what are my reflections about its use as a research tool? This exploratory research applies a self-study methodology to investigate the technology. Impressively, ChatGPT's output often aligned with key themes in the research. However, as it currently stands, ChatGPT runs the risk of positioning itself as the ultimate epistemic authority, where a single truth is assumed without a proper grounding in evidence or presented with sufficient qualifications. Key ethical concerns associated with AI include its potential environmental impact, issues related to content moderation, and the risk of copyright infringement. It is important for educators to model responsible use of ChatGPT, prioritise critical thinking, and be clear about expectations. ChatGPT is likely to be a useful tool for educators designing science units, rubrics, and quizzes. Educators should critically evaluate any AI-generated resource and adapt it to their specific teaching contexts. ChatGPT was used as a research tool for assistance with editing and to experiment with making the research narrative clearer. The intention of the paper is to act as a catalyst for a broader conversation about the use of generative AI in science education.

The selection process was thorough to ensure a comprehensive analysis of the current academic discourse on AI tools in education. Our research sheds light on the significant impact of ChatGPT on improving student engagement and accessibility and the critical issues that need to be considered, including concerns about the quality and bias of generated responses, the risk of plagiarism, and the authenticity of educational content. The study aims to summarize the utilizations of ChatGPT in teaching and learning by addressing the identified benefits and challenges through targeted strategies. Abstract:ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, offers coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading academics, scientists, distinguish researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research discusses ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifies potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation shows that ChatGPT perform differently in different subject areas including finance, coding, maths, and general public queries. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions, transforming education through smartphones and IoT gadgets, and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported “hallucinations” within GenerativeAI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education.
