Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to provide an overview of key definitions related to ChatGPT, a public tool developed by OpenAI, and its underlying technology, Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT). Design/methodology/approach This paper includes an interview with ChatGPT on its potential impact on academia and libraries. The interview discusses the benefits of ChatGPT such as improving search and discovery, reference and information services; cataloging and metadata generation; and content creation, as well as the ethical considerations that need to be taken into account, such as privacy and bias. Findings ChatGPT has considerable power to advance academia and librarianship in both anxiety-provoking and exciting new ways. However, it is important to consider how to use this technology responsibly and ethically, and to uncover how we, as professionals, can work alongside this technology to improve our work, rather than to abuse it or allow it to abuse us in the race to create new scholarly knowledge and educate future professionals. Originality/value This paper discusses the history and technology of GPT, including its generative pretrained transformer model, its ability to perform a wide range of language-based tasks and how ChatGPT uses this technology to function as a sophisticated chatbot.

Abstract:In 2022, OpenAI made a groundbreaking entrance with the release of ChatGPT, a new online chatbot that allows users to interact with the GPT-3.5 language model. Users can ask questions and converse with ChatGPT by typing into a text field similar to direct messaging software. Then, ChatGPT will generate a response. Users can then either respond to ChatGPT, regenerate the previous response, or “like” the response and give feedback. OpenAI improved the program on March 14th, 2023, with the release of GPT 4, which promised better reasoning ability. Both these iterations of ChatGPT have attracted significant attention from researchers due to the software's remarkably enhanced capabilities compared to earlier versions. Due to its inherent value as a research tool, ChatGPT will likely become a permanent fixture, so a thorough evaluation of ethical and professional boundaries is crucial. In this opinion paper, we explore ChatGPT 4.0 by addressing: a) its capabilities, b) its limitations and weaknesses, and c) strategies for fact-checking its output to ensure high-quality responses. Subsequently, the authors delve into the diverse implications of this software and discuss how it can be optimally employed to advance research in technology and various other domains.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) have emerged as important technologies. Recently, ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) has been released and attracted massive interest from the public, owing to its unique capabilities to simplify many daily tasks of people from diverse backgrounds and social statuses. Here, we discuss how ChatGPT (and similar AI technologies) can impact biology and environmental science, providing examples obtained through interactive sessions with ChatGPT. The benefits that ChatGPT offers are ample and can impact many aspects of biology and environmental science, including education, research, scientific publishing, outreach, and societal translation. Among others, ChatGPT can simplify and expedite highly complex and challenging tasks. As an example to illustrate this, we provide 100 important questions for biology and 100 important questions for environmental science. Although ChatGPT offers a plethora of benefits, there are several risks and potential harms associated with its use, which we analyze herein. Awareness of risks and potential harms should be raised. However, understanding and overcoming the current limitations could lead these recent technological advances to push biology and environmental science to their limits.

Abstract:Significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have unexpectedly improved the standard of living globally. One recent development garnering attention is ChatGPT, a natural language processing (NLP) model created by OpenAI. ChatGPT combines OpenAI's GPT-2 language model with supervised and reinforcement learning techniques, leveraging the extensive language patterns in the GPT-3 corpus. This enables natural text-based interactions between users and AI systems, making it suitable for customer service applications and the creation of voice and text-based virtual assistants. ChatGPT offers features such as topic detection, sentiment detection, sentiment analysis, and the ability to generate multiple threads, enhancing users' understanding and enabling realistic interactions. This paper explores the challenges in AI development and proposed strategies to overcome them. It further examines how ChatGPT can enhance sectors such as chat e-commerce, education, entertainment, finance, health, news, and productivity, highlighting current use cases and potential future applications. The article emphasizes ChatGPT's potential to generate personalized content, making it a promising technology for improving user experiences and advancing AI-driven interactions.

Abstract:Recently, the artificial intelligence known as ChatGPT has turned into a global sensation, especially among students. This research paper investigates the influence of this AI-powered chatbot, on undergraduate social science students based on insights drawn from semi-structured interviews. The study aims to understand the level of awareness, adoption, perceived usefulness, and impact of ChatGPT on academic performance. 200 undergraduate students were selected and verbatim transcription was used and later thematic analysis was implemented. We implied our custom code to analyze the data based on sample collection from the students. The findings indicate that most of the participants were aware of ChatGPT and had used it for academic work. Perceived usefulness and ease of use were found to be significant factors that influenced the adoption of this technology. Social influence was also found to be a significant factor, with peer recommendations playing a role in shaping students' attitudes toward new technology. ChatGPT had a positive impact on the academic performance of the participants, particularly in assisting them in understanding difficult concepts and providing them with relevant study materials. The study suggests that chatbots can be valuable tools for learning and academic assistance, particularly in disciplines such as social science that require extensive research and analysis. The findings provide useful insights for educators and researchers seeking to integrate chatbots into existing teaching and learning methods to optimize their benefits. More research is needed to assess the future impacts on students and the education sector alike.

Abstract:ChatGPT, a conversational AI interface that utilizes natural language processing and machine learning algorithms, is taking the world by storm and is the buzzword across many sectors today. Given the likely impact of this model on data science, through this perspective article, we seek to provide an overview of the potential opportunities and challenges associated with using ChatGPT in data science, provide readers with a snapshot of its advantages, and stimulate interest in its use for data science projects. The paper discusses how ChatGPT can assist data scientists in automating various aspects of their workflow, including data cleaning and preprocessing, model training, and result interpretation. It also highlights how ChatGPT has the potential to provide new insights and improve decision-making processes by analyzing unstructured data. We then examine the advantages of ChatGPT’s architecture, including its ability to be fine-tuned for a wide range of language-related tasks and generate synthetic data. Limitations and issues are also addressed, particularly around concerns about bias and plagiarism when using ChatGPT. Overall, the paper concludes that the benefits outweigh the costs and ChatGPT has the potential to greatly enhance the productivity and accuracy of data science workflows and is likely to become an increasingly important tool for intelligence augmentation in the field of data science. ChatGPT can assist with a wide range of natural language processing tasks in data science, including language translation, sentiment analysis, and text classification. However, while ChatGPT can save time and resources compared to training a model from scratch, and can be fine-tuned for specific use cases, it may not perform well on certain tasks if it has not been specifically trained for them. Abstract:ChatGPT is an extraordinary example of how far artificial intelligence has come regarding conversational interfaces. Its exceptional ability to mimic human interaction by utilizing advanced natural language processing techniques has completely transformed how people interact with technology today [ Citation 1 , Citation 2 ]. It offers a highly immersive experience for users; their conversations feel natural and realistic as if they are interacting with another human being [ Citation 3 ]. What distinguishes ChatGPT from other chatbots or virtual assistants is its incredible aptitude: when answering questions, it acknowledges user assumptions and challenges them using sophisticated algorithms. This feature significantly contributes to creating valuable insights and enhancing overall learning experiences for the users who engage with ChatGPT [ Citation 4 , Citation 5 ]. Overall, through its remarkable features, powerful machine learning models, and capacity to improve throughout interactions, ChatGPT represents one of the most innovative technologies available currently and continues to evolve every day, thus transforming communication [ Citation 6 ]. Abstract:Introduction: The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has presented several opportunities to ease human work. AI applications are available for almost every domain of life. A new technology, Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT), was introduced by OpenAI in November 2022, and has become a topic of discussion across the world. ChatGPT-3 has brought many opportunities, as well as ethical and privacy considerations. ChatGPT is a large language model (LLM) which has been trained on the events that happened until 2021. The use of AI and its assisted technologies in scientific writing is against research and publication ethics. Therefore, policies and guidelines need to be developed over the use of such tools in scientific writing. The main objective of the present study was to highlight the use of AI and AI assisted technologies such as the ChatGPT and other chatbots in the scientific writing and in the research domain resulting in bias, spread of inaccurate information and plagiarism. Methodology: Experiments were designed to test the accuracy of ChatGPT when used in research and academic writing. Results: The information provided by ChatGPT was inaccurate and may have far-reaching implications in the field of medical science and engineering. Critical thinking should be encouraged among researchers to raise awareness about the associated privacy and ethical risks. Conclusions: Regulations for ethical and privacy concerns related to the use of ChatGPT in academics and research need to be developed.

Abstract:Progress made in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in recent years has resulted in these tools becoming more accessible for individuals who lack professional training. Of particular note are large language models, such as OpenAI's GPT‐3.5. Discussions of utilizing AI for language education usually focus on the impact the technology will have on students and teachers. Less frequently the center of attention is how generative AI tools can empower researchers. The purpose of this paper is to raise awareness by demonstrating and discussing examples of how OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, can be leveraged as a tool for language education researchers. After briefly introducing the use of AI generative tools in the field, this paper demonstrates how a researcher, without any understanding of NLP or AI, may use ChatGPT to assist with research through multiple means, including approaches to its use for compiling and summarizing information, and as a research assistant throughout multiple steps of research. This is followed by a discussion of potential ethical concerns of using AI for research in the field. We conclude by issuing a call for further work examining how researchers can harness the potential of this technology in ethical ways.

Abstract:Emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT offer considerable promise for enhancing professional development in higher education. This study focuses on the experiences of early-career lecturers who utilise ChatGPT for professional development. Central questions explore ChatGPT's influence on their overall professional experience and the challenges and benefits of its use. While research on AI in education has been growing, few studies have delved into the specific experiences of young academics using ChatGPT. This study employed qualitative methods to address this gap, pre-cisely 45- to 60-minute in-depth interviews with two purposively selected lecturers, followed by a thematic analysis using a grounded theory approach. Our findings reveal a multifaceted landscape: on the one hand, ChatGPT enhances the ability to construct intricate academic arguments, increases effi-ciency in research and teaching tasks, and heightens critical thinking capabilities. Conversely, chal-lenges such as initial technical hurdles, occasional incorrect outputs, and concerns about over-dependency were also highlighted. Through this investigation, the study contributes to the broader discourse on AI in education by illustrating both the promising opportunities and potential pitfalls of using ChatGPT in academia. The study underscores the need for a balanced approach to AI adoption. It offers insights into the role of AI tools like ChatGPT in shaping the future of professional development in higher education.

Abstract:In recent years, advancements in the field of artificial intelligence have increased exponentially, culminating in widely available user-based tools such as ChatGPT. Although fairly new, these tools have as of yet been underutilized by the scientific community, including climatology. As a large language model, ChatGPT’s strong ability to accurately respond to prompts allows it to be used as a comprehensive tool with a variety of applications in climatology, which this article groups into practical and conceptual applications. Practically, ChatGPT excels in the assistance of code creation and troubleshooting, allowing for efficient automation of data collection, as well as the process of basic data sorting. Conceptually, the tool gives a foundation for researchers to “fill the knowledge gap” by gaining a basic understanding of supplementary information presented in the literature review portion of a research project. While ChatGPT is powerful, it contains significant limitations that hinder its status as a standalone tool, such as occasional inaccurate responses, lack of transparency, and absence of data protection. Despite these setbacks, use of ChatGPT in a responsible and ethical manner with awareness of its limitations can be efficient, dynamic, and adherent to the principles of scientific integrity.

Abstract:This article presents a scientometric and literature analysis of current research on ChatGPT, a conversational AI technology developed by OpenAI. Using various databases, 103 relevant articles were retrieved and analyzed through scientometric, quantitative, and application-based approaches. A Google trend analysis and comparison with other generative AI and chatbot technologies were also carried out. The study provides insights into the distribution of ChatGPT publications across different countries and regions, the network of co-occurring keywords, authorship analysis, article typology, and publishing entities. The findings offer a comprehensive overview of the current state of ChatGPT research, highlighting key directions for future research. The study finds that ChatGPT has gained significant attention and interest in online platforms, particularly in technology, education, and healthcare, and highlights potential ethical and legal concerns related to its use. Its applications extend to several literary and text generation areas. We do note that the sample of extracted publications is lower than anticipated due to the niche area of investigation. The article is relevant to researchers, practitioners, and policymakers interested in the field of AI-powered language models, especially ChatGPT.
