Abstract:The reversible surface stretch often emerges from the Hellman-Feynman forces exerted on the charged surfaces, leading to the change of the surface stress. A generalized surface elasticity theory is formulated, which allows one to analyze the transverse surface mechanical behavior. The involved transverse surface elastic constants are determined by an efficient method based on analyzing the process of molecular-dynamics simulation for surface elasticity. Our approach provides a framework with which the direct relation between the in-plane surface stress and the transverse surface elastic deformation is addressed in the presence of the surface charges. We also find the significant modi. cation in the elastic modulus of nanostructures due to the existence of the transverse component of surface stress and strain arisen from the surface charges. Abstract:In response to the comment by Zhu and Berakdar (arXiv:1207.3457) that the physical system considered by them in their previous work [Ding et al., PRB 84, 115433 (2011)] is conceptually different from ours in the appendix of our latest paper [Zhou and Wu, arXiv:1206.3435], we show why they are relevant and further point out conceptually the problems in their work. We also point out that the main supporting arguments in their comment are incorrect.

Abstract:Gong points out [quant-ph arXiv:1106.0062] a "direct connection" between our measure [PRL 106, 220401 (2011)] recently proposed to quantify macroscopic quantum superpositions and a previously studied quantity introduced to study classical and quantum chaos. We point out that the two measures are obviously different for some mixed states, and the previous one does not work as a sensible measure to quantify quantum superpositions.

Abstract:In May 2020, this journal published the paper “Lattice Boltzmann simulation and fractal analysis of effective thermal conductivity in porous media”, applying and comparing a lattice-Boltzmann-based simulation model and a fractal-material-based analytical model for effective thermal conductivity of porous media. This comment, which is considered a post-publication review, reveals however that the paper’s fractal model often exceeds the upper bound as defined by the parallel model. These exceedances are physically unsound, as this upper bound is well established and widely recognised. This comment is therefore challenging the paper’s current Figures 6, 8 and 10 directly, as well as contesting the paper’s Figure 9 indirectly. Consequently, this comment invites the paper’s authors to reassess the fractal model as well as to reconsider the research findings in their reply.

Modeling of a charged dielectric interface: Comparison of the continuum and discrete lattice representations of surface charges

Abstract:Two main approaches in particle-based simulations for modeling a charged surface are using explicit, discrete charges and continuum, uniform charges. It is well-known that these two approaches could lead to substantially distinct ionic distributions, whereas a systematic exploration of the origin is still absent. In this short communication, we calculate the electrostatic force of a single point charge above a planar substrate characterized by a surface charge density and dielectric mismatch and compare the differences in the electrostatic forces produced by discrete and continuum representations of surface charges. We demonstrate that while the model of uniform surface charges gives a rather simple picture, the model of discrete surface charges can exhibit different scenarios, depending on the respective values of ion-surface distance versus lattice spacing and a self-image interaction parameter.
