Abstract:The properties of optical vortex provide new insights into a wide range of optical and physical phenomena, giving rise to numerous applications in multiple disciplines. Notably, as much as the associated technologies have become increasingly flexible, it is still challenging to simultaneously generate multiple longitudinal polarization optical vortices with random topological charges (l) and tunable intensities at arbitrary positions. Herein, a novel approach that, by manipulating phase and amplitude at the back pupil of a high numerical-aperture (NA) objective, realizes arbitrary longitudinal polarization vortices within the tightly focused light field is developed. Building upon the same model, the impacts of polarization on the optical vortex field and its potential of tuning the ratio of the longitudinal polarization component are further investigated.

Abstract:Polarisation states are described by spin expectation values, known as Stokes parameters, whose trajectories in a rotationally symmetric system form a sphere named after Poincaré. Here, we show that the trajectories of broken rotational symmetric systems can exhibit distinct topological structures in polarisation states. We use a phase-shifter to form a polarisation circle (${\mathbb S}^1$), which interferes with the original input due to the phase change of the output state upon the rotation. By rotating the circle using a rotator, the trajectories become a polarisation torus (${\mathbb S}^1 \times {\mathbb S}^1$), which was experimentally confirmed in a simple set-up using passive optical components together with Mach-Zehnder interferometers. We also discuss about realisations of other topological features, such as Möbius strip, Hopf-links, and topological Dirac bosons with a bulk-edge correspondence.

Abstract:We present one of the main lines of development of Poincaré sphere representation in polarization optics, by using largely some of our contributions in the field. We refer to the action of deterministic devices, specifically the diattenuators, on the partial polarized light. On one hand, we emphasize the intimate connection between the Pauli algebraic analysis and the Poincaré ball representation of this interaction. On the other hand, we bring to the foreground the close similarity between the law of composition of the Poincaré vectors of the diattenuator and of polarized light and the law of composition of relativistic admissible velocities. These two kinds of vectors are isomorphic, and they are "imprisoned" in a sphere of finite radius, standardizable at a radius of one, i.e., Poincaré sphere.

Abstract:We propose a twist condition, inspired by the classical Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem on area-preserving maps of the annulus, which applies to asymptotically linear Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of linear phase space. When an asymptotically linear Hamiltonian diffeomorphism, non-degenerate and unitary at infinity, satisfies this twist condition, we show that it has infinitely many periodic points.

Abstract:We provide a theoretical investigation of optical Poincaré beams that exhibit interwinding chiral polarized domains upon propagation. We employ both analytical and numerical methods in order to investigate this phenomenon. Specifically, we introduce the theoretical framework that elucidates the formation and spiraling behavior of chiral polarized domains of light. Additionally, we define dynamic quantities that help us understand and quantify the angular motion of these domains. We apply this method to cylindrically symmetric optical beams, thereby unveiling their distinct radial and longitudinal propagation dynamics.

The Poynting vector field singularities: Effects of symmetry and its violation

Abstract:The phenomenological theory revealing the generic effects of the problem symmetry, its violation, and energy conservation law on the singularities of the Poynting vector field is presented. The bifurcation scenario of their formation (annihilation) under variations of the problem parameters is elucidated. The results describe the singularities in scattering a linearly polarized plane electromagnetic wave. However, they are valid for any configuration of the incident beam at its scattering by a subwavelength particle. The author shows that topological changes in the pattern of the Poynting vector field occur through a finite number of pitchfork bifurcations. It means that the patterns are topologically stable under variations of the problem parameter(s) that lie between the bifurcation values. The latter ensures that the discussed topological properties of the problem are robust to weak symmetry violation, which is inevitable in any actual experiment. The general consideration is illustrated by a detailed study of singularities in scattering by an infinite right circular germanium cylinder. The results open the possibility of fitting and controlling radiation patterns on subwavelength scales important for various nanotechnologies.

Abstract:In this work, we report a general reflection model to describe the reflected behaviors of a Gaussian beam near photonic Dirac point at the optical interface. With spin polarized electromagnetic waves strikes near the single Dirac point on Dirac material interface, vortical phase distribution and spin inversion are demonstrated for reflected state, and we further develop a higher-order Poincaré sphere to describe the evolution of polarization states. It is possible to generate any desired Poincaré vortex beam on the sphere by modulating the incident polarization state of light. Moreover, we discuss the case of normal incidence around two adjacent Dirac points, reflection spectrum involves a couple of spin flip vortices corresponding to two points with the corresponding topological invariants, which are consistent with the Berry curvature and topological charge. These results can be extended to similar hyperbolic metamaterials with degenerate point, and inspire a different perspective for manipulating polarized vortex beam with photonic Dirac point. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.104.013504 ©2021 American Physical Society

Abstract:We report experimental realization and manipulation of optical tornado waves (ToWs). By controlling the self-focusing length, total angular momentum, and foci deviation of ToWs, the propagation properties of optical ToWs, especially their angular velocity, can be manipulated. Controlling the accumulated rotation angle of the main intensity lobes of ToWs from 0° through 1100° is experimentally demonstrated, and their angular velocity is predicted to be the highest around the foci overlap situation. Our experimental results are in good agreement with numerical results.

Abstract:The local two-dimensional Poincaré algebra near the horizon of an eternal AdS black hole, or in proximity to any bifurcate Killing horizon, is generated by the Killing flow and outward null translations on the horizon. In holography, this local Poincaré algebra is reflected as a pair of unitary flows in the boundary Hilbert space whose generators under modular flow grow and decay exponentially with a maximal Lyapunov exponent. This is a universal feature of many geometric vacua of quantum gravity. To explain this universality, we show that a two-dimensional Poincaré algebra emerges in any quantum system that has von Neumann subalgebras associated with half-infinite modular time intervals (modular future and past subalgebras) in a limit analogous to the near-horizon limit. In ergodic theory, quantum dynamical systems with future or past algebras are called quantum K-systems. The surprising statement is that modular K-systems are always maximally chaotic.

Abstract:Abstract Polarization singularities of vectorial electromagnetic fields locate at the positions where properties of polarization ellipses are not defined. First observed for conical diffraction in 1830s, polarization singularities have been studied systematically with the underlying concepts being reshaped and deepened by many pioneers of wave optics. Here we review the recent results on the generation and observation of polarization singularities in metaphotonics. We start with the discussion of polarization singularities in the Mie theory, where both electric and magnetic multipoles are explored from perspectives of local and global polarization properties. We then proceed with the discussion of various photonic-crystal structures, for which both near- and far-field patterns manifest diverse polarization singularities characterized by the integer Poincaré or more general half-integer Hopf indices (topological charges). Next, we review the most recent studies of conversions from polarization to phase singularities in scalar wave optics, demonstrating how bound states in the continuum can be exploited to generate directly optical vortices of various charges. Throughout our paper, we discuss and highlight several fundamental concepts and demonstrate their close connections and special links to metaphotonics. We believe polarization singularities can provide novel perspectives for light-matter manipulation for both fundamental studies and their practical applications.
Spin angular momentum and optical chirality of Poincaré vector vortex beams

Abstract:The optical chirality and spin angular momentum of structured scalar vortex beams has been intensively studied in recent years. The pseudoscalar topological charge of these beams is responsible for their unique properties. Constructed from a superposition of scalar vortex beams with topological charges and , cylindrical vector vortex beams are higher-order Poincar'e modes which possess a spatially inhomogeneous polarization distribution. Here we highlight the highly tailorable and exotic spatial distributions of the optical spin and chirality densities of these higher-order structured beams under both paraxial (weak focusing) and non-paraxial (tight focusing) conditions. Our analytical theory can yield the spin angular momentum and optical chirality of each point on any higher-order or hybrid-order Poincar'e sphere. It is shown that the tunable Pancharatnam topological charge and polarization index of the vector vortex beam plays a decisive role in customizing their spin and chirality spatial distributions. We also provide the correct analytical equations to describe a focused, non-paraxial scalar Bessel beam.

Abstract:Polarization singularities in paraxial vector optical fields are analyzed in terms of the phase singularities of complex Stokes scalar fields. Six independent relationships are obtained that connect the topological charges of these singularities on special closed contours with the charges of singularities that are enclosed by these contours. These relationships, which have been confirmed by experimental data and computer simulations, imply topological polarization correlations of an infinite range.

Abstract:We discussed twisted quantum deformations of D=4 Lorentz and Poincare algebras. In the case of Poincare algebra it is shown that almost all classical r-matrices of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://S.Zakrzewski" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> classification can be presented as a sum of subordinated r-matrices of Abelian and Jordanian types. Corresponding twists describing quantum deformations are obtained in explicit form. Abstract:The results of this study are continuation of the research of Poincaré chaos initiated in papers (Akhmet M, Fen MO. Commun Nonlinear Sci Numer Simulat 2016;40:1-5; Akhmet M, Fen MO. Turk J Math, doi:<a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.3906/mat-1603-51" href="https://doi.org/10.3906/mat-1603-51" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.3906/mat-1603-51</a>, accepted). We focus on the construction of an unpredictable function, continuous on the real axis. As auxiliary results, unpredictable orbits for the symbolic dynamics and the logistic map are obtained. By shaping the unpredictable function as well as Poisson function we have performed the first step in the development of the theory of unpredictable solutions for differential and discrete equations. The results are preliminary ones for deep analysis of chaos existence in differential and hybrid systems. Illustrative examples concerning unpredictable solutions of differential equations are provided.

Abstract:As a vector version of scalar Bessel beams, Poincaré-Bessel beams (PBBs) have attracted a great deal of attention due to their non-diffracting and self-healing properties as well as the presence of polarization singularities. Previous studies of PBBs have focused on cases that consist of a superposition of Bessel beams in orthogonal circular polarization states; here, we present a theoretical and experimental study of PBBs for which the polarization states are taken to be linear, which we call a linear PBB. Using a mode transformation of a full Poincaré beam constructed from linear polarization states, we observe the linear PBB as providing an in-principle infinite number of covers of the Poincaré sphere in the transverse plane and with an infinite number of C-points with positive and negative topological indices. We also study the dynamics of C-point singularities in a linear PBB in the process of self-healing after being obstructed by an obstacle, providing insight into "Hilbert Hotel" style evolution of singularities in light beams. The present study can be useful for imaging in the presence of depolarizing surroundings, studying turbulent atmospheric channels, and exploring the rich mathematical concepts of transfinite numbers.
