Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a two-dimensional photonic array featuring a circular shape and an alternating gain and loss pattern. Our analysis revolves around determining the presence and resilience of optical ring modes with varying vorticity values. This investigation is conducted with respect to both the array's length and the strength of the non-Hermitian parameter. For larger values of array's length, we observe a reduction in the stability domain as the non-Hermitian parameter increases. Interestingly, upon an increasing of vorticity of the optical modes full stability windows emerge for shorter lattice sizes regime.

Generating First-Order Optical Vortex Beams by Photonic Crystal Slabs

Abstract:Optical vortices, which are beams with helical wavefronts and spiral phase mismatches, have garnered considerable attention in various fields. In this study, we theoretically proposed and experimentally implemented a simple method for generating first-order optical vortices. To generate first-order vortex beams using the polarization field in the momentum space of photonic crystal slabs, topological half charges are required. We propose a method to divide the polarization vortex in the momentum space by breaking symmetry, which results in Dirac points or circularly polarized points. This approach enables the transformation of topological integer charges into topological half-integer charges, thereby facilitating the generation of first-order vortex beams. This approach extends the application of bound states in continuum and topological photonics.

Abstract:Optical vortex, typically characterized by a helical phase front, results in a possession of orbital angular momentum. In recent years, teleportation of the vortex mode using novel beams with peculiar features has gained great interest. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the propagation dynamics for a new class of the auto-focusing vortex circular Pearcey beam (VCPB), which is theoretically described by delivering the coaxial or off-axial spiral phases into the circular Pearcey beam (CPB), forming the crescent or bottle-like focal structure with self-rotation. Notably, such a hybrid beam with various types is experimentally obtained through a digital micromirror device (DMD) with the binary amplitude holography, and this DMD-based modulation scheme combined with controllable vortex modes enables dynamic switching among the VCPBs. We also measure the topological phase by interferometry and we explain the beam property on the basis of Poynting vector, showing a good agreement with the simulations. Further, the number, location and mode of embedded vortices could offer multiple dimensions of flexibility for target beam modulation, thus the experimentally controllable VCPBs will bring potential to high-speed optical communications and particle manipulations that require dynamic shaping.

Abstract:In this paper, partially coherent radially polarized vortex circular Airy beams (PCRPVCABs) are theoretically and experimentally studied for the first time. Comparing with partially coherent radially polarized circular Airy beam, the autofocusing ability of PCRPVCAB can be controlled or even enhanced by the topological charge of the vortex phase. Besides, we show a unique distribution of the degree of polarization, vortex-phase induced polarization transition, and the phenomenon of beam spot rotation after the PCRPVCAB passing through a polarizer. Our results make the PCRPVCAB a good candidate for optical micro-manipulation, free-space communications, formation of disordered optical lattices, etc.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated the generation of a dynamic nonlinear vortex beam array by utilizing a fundamental wave with a modulated phase structure, which was incident into a homogeneous nonlinear medium. In our experiment, one-dimensional and two-dimensional second harmonic vortex beam arrays were investigated, and the topological charge of second harmonic vortex beam of different order was measured. This study presents a method of dynamic control of the nonlinear vortex beam array, which may have applications in multiple-particles optical trapping, optical communication, and so on. Abstract:<p>The helical phase structure of a twisted light beam has attracted big interest in both fundamental science and practical applications. A facile metasurface approach to generate and manipulate ring vortex beams is reported and experimentally demonstrated. The generation of ring vortex beams is realized by combining the functionalities of an axicon, a vortex beam generator and a beam deflector onto a single reflective metasurface, which consists of nanorods with spatially variant orientations sitting on a silicon dioxide layer in the middle and a gold layer at the bottom. By controlling the polarization state of the incident light, the superposition of ring vortex beams is continuously tuned. The unique property of the developed device renders this technology very attractive for polarization detection and quantum science related applications.</p>

Abstract:Perfect vector beams with radius independent of topological charges have garnered significant interest owing to their unique capabilities in optical manipulation, microscopy imaging, and laser micro-machining. However, their polarization state is limited to four modes, restricting their information capacity and re-usability. To address this, we introduce double-ring perfect vectorial vortex beams that leverage the axicon phase to theoretically generate double-ring structures through a Fourier transform. By applying a transformation matrix and introducing a cross phase, we can manipulate the beam distribution. This approach is expected to enhance for development of particle capture and optical communications.

Abstract:Abstract An optical vortex possesses a ring-shaped spatial profile and orbital angular momentum (OAM) owing to its helical wavefront. This form of structured light has garnered significant attention in recent years, and it has enabled new investigations in fundamental physics and applications. One such exciting application is laser-based material transfer for nano-/micro-fabrication. In this work, we demonstrate the application of a single-pulse optical vortex laser beam for direct printing of ring-shaped structures composed of hexagonal close-packed, mono-/multi-layered nanoparticles which exhibit ‘structural color’. We compare and contrast the interaction of the vortex beam with both dielectric and metallic nanoparticles and offer physical insight into how the OAM of vortex beams interacts with matter. The demonstrated technique holds promise for not only photonic-based nano-/micro-fabrication, but also as a means of sorting particles on the nanoscale, a technology which we term ‘optical vortex nanoparticle sorting’.

Nonuniformly Filled Vortex Rings in Nonlinear Optics

Abstract:A new type of long-lived solitary structures for paraxial optics with two circular polarizations of light in a homogeneous defocusing Kerr medium with an anomalous group velocity dispersion has been revealed numerically in the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. A found hybrid three-dimensional soliton is a vortex ring against the background of a plane wave in one of the components, and the core of the vortex is filled with another component nonuniformly in azimuth angle. The existence of such quasistationary structures with a reduced symmetry in a certain parametric region is due to the saturation of the so-called sausage instability caused by the effective surface tension of a domain wall between two polarizations.

Abstract:The optical chirality and spin angular momentum of structured scalar vortex beams has been intensively studied in recent years. The pseudoscalar topological charge of these beams is responsible for their unique properties. Constructed from a superposition of scalar vortex beams with topological charges and , cylindrical vector vortex beams are higher-order Poincar'e modes which possess a spatially inhomogeneous polarization distribution. Here we highlight the highly tailorable and exotic spatial distributions of the optical spin and chirality densities of these higher-order structured beams under both paraxial (weak focusing) and non-paraxial (tight focusing) conditions. Our analytical theory can yield the spin angular momentum and optical chirality of each point on any higher-order or hybrid-order Poincar'e sphere. It is shown that the tunable Pancharatnam topological charge and polarization index of the vector vortex beam plays a decisive role in customizing their spin and chirality spatial distributions. We also provide the correct analytical equations to describe a focused, non-paraxial scalar Bessel beam.

Abstract:Vortex beams are structured light fields with a helical phase of the form exp (ilϕ) that carries an optical angular momentum (OAM) of lℏ per photon. Such beams typically have a ring-shaped intensity with a radius that varies with l. Perfect vortex (PV) beams are designed to have a radius that is approximately uniform over a certain OAM range. Here, we report how spatial coherence can be used to maintain a fixed ring shape over a larger propagation distance and for a greater OAM range than is possible for fully coherent vortex beams. Our work is relevant for the application of PV beams in areas such as trapping, tweezing, and optical communications.

Abstract:An optical vortex (OV) is a beam with spiral wave front and screw phase dislocation. This kind of beams is attracting rising interest in various fields. Here we theoretically proposed and experimentally realized a novel but easy approach to generate optical vortices. We leverage the inherent topological vortex structures of polarization around bound states in the continuum (BIC) in the momentum space of two dimensional periodic structures, e.g. photonic crystal slabs, to induce Pancharatnam-Berry phases to the beams. This new class of OV generators operates in the momentum space, meaning that there is no real-space center of structure. Thus, not only the fabrication but also the practical alignment would be greatly simplified. Any even order of OV, which is actually a quasi-non-diffractive high-order quasi-Bessel beam, at any desired working wavelength could be achieved in principle. The proposed approach expands the application of bound states in the continuum and topological photonics.
Vortex multistability and Bessel vortices in polariton condensates

Abstract:Vortices are topological objects formed in coherent nonlinear systems. As such they are studied in a wide number of physical systems and promise applications in information storage, processing, and communication. In semiconductor microcavities, vortices in polariton condensates can be conveniently created, studied, and manipulated using solely optical means. For non-resonant excitation with a ring-shaped pump a stable vortex can be formed, leading to bistability with left- and righthanded vorticity. In the present work we report on a much richer vortex multistability, with optically addressable vortices with topological charges |m|=1, 2, and 3, all stable for the same system and excitation parameters. This unusual multistable behavior is rooted in the inherent nonlinear feedback between reservoir excitations and condensate in the microcavity. For larger radius of the ring shaped pump we also find a Bessel vortex with its characteristic spiralling phase in the high density region and pronounced self-stabilization ability. Our theoretical results open up exciting possibilities for optical manipulation of vortex multiplets in a compact semiconductor system.

Experimental realization of vortex and vectorial vortex Pearcey-Gauss Beams

Abstract:In this manuscript, we put forward two new types of structured light beams, the vortex Pearcey-Gauss (VPeG) beam, with a homogeneous polarisation distribution, and the vector vortex Pearcey-Gauss (VVPeG) beam, with a non-homogeneous polarisation distribution. The later generated as a non-separable superposition of the spatial and polarisation degrees of freedom. We also achieve their experimental realization through the combination of a spatial light modulator, which creates a scalar Pearcey-Gauss beam, and a q-plate which transforms it into a vortex or a vortex vector beam, depending on its input polarisation state. Their intensity and polarisation distribution was performed through Stokes polarimetry, along the propagation direction, which was compared with numerical simulations. As demonstrated, the VVPeG beam evolves from a pure vector beam into a vector mode of quasi-homogeneous polarisation distribution. The proposed vector beams add to the already extensive family of non-separable states of light. We anticipate that both types of beams will find applications in fields as diverse as optical metrology, optical communications, and optical tweezers, amongst others.

Abstract:Vortex beams are powerful primitives for optical operations and communications. We propose general mathematical methods to establish new vortex beams and optimize existing vortex beams. Based on these methods, two new types of vortex beams are demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. The propagation characteristics of these vortex beams can be finely controlled through specific parameters. Additionally, influences of periodic discontinuities and orbital angular momentum of two vortex beams are analyzed. The innovative concept of beam modulation and the introduction of new vortex beams in this paper indicate significant potential for applications in particle trapping, spatial communication, and quantum computation.

Abstract:Singular optics studying optical vortices, or phase singularities, has grown rapidly recently because optical vortices have some interesting properties and promising applications, for instance, to construct highly versatile optical tweezers. In this article, the focusing properties of hyperbolic-cosine-Gaussian beam, which contains a non-spiral optical vortex and a spiral optical vortex, are investigated numerically. The phase plate may be used to construct non-spiral optical vortex by putting phase plate in a half section part of hyperbolic-cosine-Gaussian beam. Results show that the parameters of non-spiral optical vortex and spiral optical vortex influence focal intensity distribution considerably, and some novel focal patterns, such as line focal spot, "H" shape focal spot, and intensity peaks array, may occur. Focal shift and focal split may also appear in focal evolution with tunable parameters of vortices terms. The focal evolution differs for different parameters in cosh parts of hyperbolic-cosine-Gaussian beam.
