Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.

Abstract:We have proposed an approach for rapid generation of perfect vortex beam without side lobes through a digital micromirror device (DMD). Employing this method, the amplitude and phase of far field can be controlled indirectly by changing the rotation state of each unit on the DMD. The perfect vortex beams of equal rings diameter independent of their topological charges are generated commendably and the side lobes are avoided. Moreover, we have demonstrated rapid switching among the generated orbital angular momentum modes at the speed of 10 kHz, which is much faster than that of the usual method realized by spatial light modulators (SLMs). The proposed method is very beneficial for the optical communication and trapping or manipulating the small particle based on orbital angular momentum modes.

Abstract:Perfect vector beams with radius independent of topological charges have garnered significant interest owing to their unique capabilities in optical manipulation, microscopy imaging, and laser micro-machining. However, their polarization state is limited to four modes, restricting their information capacity and re-usability. To address this, we introduce double-ring perfect vectorial vortex beams that leverage the axicon phase to theoretically generate double-ring structures through a Fourier transform. By applying a transformation matrix and introducing a cross phase, we can manipulate the beam distribution. This approach is expected to enhance for development of particle capture and optical communications.

Abstract:In this paper, partially coherent radially polarized vortex circular Airy beams (PCRPVCABs) are theoretically and experimentally studied for the first time. Comparing with partially coherent radially polarized circular Airy beam, the autofocusing ability of PCRPVCAB can be controlled or even enhanced by the topological charge of the vortex phase. Besides, we show a unique distribution of the degree of polarization, vortex-phase induced polarization transition, and the phenomenon of beam spot rotation after the PCRPVCAB passing through a polarizer. Our results make the PCRPVCAB a good candidate for optical micro-manipulation, free-space communications, formation of disordered optical lattices, etc.

Abstract:Optical vortex, typically characterized by a helical phase front, results in a possession of orbital angular momentum. In recent years, teleportation of the vortex mode using novel beams with peculiar features has gained great interest. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the propagation dynamics for a new class of the auto-focusing vortex circular Pearcey beam (VCPB), which is theoretically described by delivering the coaxial or off-axial spiral phases into the circular Pearcey beam (CPB), forming the crescent or bottle-like focal structure with self-rotation. Notably, such a hybrid beam with various types is experimentally obtained through a digital micromirror device (DMD) with the binary amplitude holography, and this DMD-based modulation scheme combined with controllable vortex modes enables dynamic switching among the VCPBs. We also measure the topological phase by interferometry and we explain the beam property on the basis of Poynting vector, showing a good agreement with the simulations. Further, the number, location and mode of embedded vortices could offer multiple dimensions of flexibility for target beam modulation, thus the experimentally controllable VCPBs will bring potential to high-speed optical communications and particle manipulations that require dynamic shaping.

Abstract:The perfect vortex (PV) beam, characterized by carrying orbital angular momentum and a radial electric intensity distribution independent of the topological charge, has important applications in optical communication, particle manipulation, and quantum optics. Conventional methods of generating PV beams require a series of bulky optical elements that are tightly collimated with each other, adding to the complexity of optical systems. Here, making the amplitude of transmitted co-polarized and cross-polarized components to be constant, all-dielectric transmission metasurfaces with superimposed phase profiles integrating spiral phase plate, axicon and Fourier lens are constructed based on the phase-only modulation method. Using mathematical derivation and numerical simulation, multi-channel PV beams with controllable annular ring radius and topological charge are realized for the first time under circularly polarized light incidence combining the propagation phase and geometric phase. Meanwhile, perfect vector vortex beams are produced by superposition of PV beams under the incidence of left-handed circularly polarized and right-handed circularly polarized lights, respectively. This work provides a new perspective on generating tailored PV beams, increasing design flexibility and facilitating the construction of compact, integrated, and versatile nanophotonics platforms.

Abstract:A perfect vortex beam (PVB) is a propagating optical field carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) with a radial intensity profile that is independent of topological charge. PVBs can be generated through the Fourier transform of a Bessel-Gaussian beam, which typically requires a well-aligned optical setup consisting of a spiral phase plate, an axion, and a lens. Here, based on a single-layer dielectric metasurface, the broadband generation of PVBs across the entire visible spectrum is demonstrated. The metasurface is composed of TiO2 nanopillars acting as deep-subwavelength half-waveplates, and able to provide the desired geometric phase profile to an incident circularly polarized light for the generation of PVBs. Through rigorous optimization of the nanopillars' structural parameters, the authors experimentally generate vortex beams carrying OAM with different topological charges that exhibit constant radial intensity profiles, verifying their "perfect" characteristics. Furthermore, it is also demonstrated that the ellipticity and diameter of a PVB can be simultaneously controlled by adjusting the structural parameters of the metasurface, which further increases the flexibility in their design. These results open a new route towards creating ultra-compact, flat, multifunctional nanophotonic platforms for efficient generation of structured light beams.

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose a type of continuous phase vortex gratings (CPVGs), which are able to generate a series of vortex beams with equal or proportional diffracted energies and different topological charges (TCs). A set of CPVGs with dimensions (60 × 60 × 1.1 μm3) are directly designed by mathematical equations, which avoids the use of iterative algorithms. The CPVGs are fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing (FsLDW) with photoresist, and the experimentally generated vortex beams are in good agreement with the theoretical designs, exhibiting high optical efficiencies. In addition, we realized a CPVG onto the tip of a composite fiber for integrated optical systems. Our work paves the way for applications in optical communications, optical manipulations, and high-performance integrated optics.

Abstract:Vortex beams are structured light fields with a helical phase of the form exp (ilϕ) that carries an optical angular momentum (OAM) of lℏ per photon. Such beams typically have a ring-shaped intensity with a radius that varies with l. Perfect vortex (PV) beams are designed to have a radius that is approximately uniform over a certain OAM range. Here, we report how spatial coherence can be used to maintain a fixed ring shape over a larger propagation distance and for a greater OAM range than is possible for fully coherent vortex beams. Our work is relevant for the application of PV beams in areas such as trapping, tweezing, and optical communications.

Abstract:We propose that a perfect vortex beam (PVB) exhibits three major properties, namely, perfect property, self-focusing property, and self-healing property. Our experimental results indicate that PVB manifests superb perfect property, impervious to the influence of orbital angular momentum during the anti-diffraction stage, but ultimately transitioning to the self-focusing property during the self-focusing stage. The self-focusing property of PVB can significantly augment its transmission performance and be tailored through adjustments to the ring radius, ring thickness, and self-focusing ratio to meet the needs of various optical applications. Moreover, we have discussed the mechanism underlying the self-focusing phenomenon and deduced the self-focusing position formula. This formula facilitates a superior estimation of the self-focusing location. Furthermore, our study unveils the third salient property of PVB, namely, its self-healing property, which enables it to restore its intensity and shape of beam after being obstructed by an obstacle, thereby the self-healing property offers promising potential for the application of PVB in the optical field. Our investigation marks what we believe to be the first discovery of PVB's three major properties, confirmed via theoretical and experimental methods. Thereby establishing a firm research foundation that can facilitate the burgeoning applications of PVB in various optical fields, including but not limited to optical trapping, optical imaging, and wireless optical communication. Abstract:A ring-shaped focus, such as a focused vortex beam, has played an important role in microfabrication and optical tweezers.The shape and diameter of the ring-shaped focus can be easily adjusted by the topological charge of the vortex. However,the flow energy is also related to the topological charge, making the individual control of diameter and flow energy of the vortex beam impossible. Meanwhile, the shape of the focus of the vortex beam remains in the hollow ring. Expanding the shape of focus of structural light broadens the applications of the vortex beam in the field of microfabrication. Here, we proposed a ring-shaped focus with controllable gaps by multiplexing the vortex beam and annular beam. The multiplexed beam has several advantages, such as the diameter and flow energy of the focal point can be individually controlled and are not affected by the zero-order beam, and the gap size and position are controllable.

Abstract:We present a highly efficient method of generating and shaping ellipse perfect vector beams (EPVBs) with a prescribed ellipse intensity profile and continuously variant linear polarization state. The scheme is based on the coaxial superposition of two orthogonally polarized ellipse laser beams of controllable phase vortex serving as the base vector components. The phase-only computer-generated hologram is specifically designed by means of a modified iteration algorithm involving a complex amplitude constraint, which is able to generate an EPVB with high diffraction efficiency in the vector optical field generator. We experimentally demonstrate that the efficiency of generating the EPVB has a notable improvement from 1.83% in the conventional complex amplitude modulation based technique to 11.1% in our method. We also discuss and demonstrate the simultaneous shaping of multiple EPVBs with independent tunable ellipticity and polarization vortex in both transversal (2D) and axial (3D) focusing structures, proving potentials in a variety of polarization-mediated applications such as trapping and transportation of particles in more complex geometric circumstances.

Abstract:The recognition in the 1990s that vortex beams (VBs), paraxial light beams with optical vortices, carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), has benefited applications ranging from optical manipulation to high-dimensional classical and quantum information communications. The transverse profiles of common VBs, e.g., Laguerre-Gaussian beam and high-order Bessel beam, are hollow donuts whose radii grow up with OAM inevitably. The inherently unperfect character of the VBs that the radius is always positively correlated with OAM, restricts the application of the VBs in many scenarios like fiber optic data transmission, spatial OAM mode (de)multiplexing communication, and particle manipulation, which call for VBs to have the same scale with distinct OAM or even the small vortex ring for large OAM. Here, we derived a theory based on the most widely used Laguerre-Gaussian beam to generate a brand new type of VB with OAM-independent radii that moves away from the common unperfect constraint, called Laguerre-Gaussian Perfect Vortex Beam (LGPVB). LGPVBs have the self-similar property like common Laguerre-Gaussian beams but can self-heal after suffering disturbance and always remain 'perfection' when propagating. Our Fourier-space design not only allows us to shape the LGPVB's propagating intensity at will, but it also gives LGPVB the fascinating potential to arbitrarily self-accelerate while still perfectly propagating, self-similar, and self-healing. This customizable self-healing LGPVB, whose properties inform our most expectations of VBs, offers a better alternative for application scenarios of common VBs in a wide range of areas.

Abstract:A transmissive adaptable optical setup to generate a range of perfect vortex beams (PVBs) carrying different topological charges (TC) without using moving parts is presented. The setup is composed of an ad hoc transparent reconfigurable liquid crystal (LC) spiral phase plate (SPP), a refractive axicon and a convergent refractive lens. The LC SPP electrodes are manufactured ablating indium-tin oxide (ITO) glass substrates using direct laser writing (DLW) resulting in a very high fill factor device. In-house tailored electronics drive the 72 LC SPP electrodes giving rise to 72 different configurations with orbital angular momentum. In this work, the generation of PVBs with 36 positive or 36 negative TCs using this optical setup is accomplished.

Abstract:High-intensity vortex beams with tunable topological charges and low coherence are highly demanded in applications such as inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and optical communication. However, traditional optical vortices featuring nonuniform intensity distributions are dramatically restricted in application scenarios that require a high-intensity vortex beam owing to their ineffective amplification resulting from the intensity-dependent nonlinear effect. Here, a low-coherence perfect vortex beam (PVB) with a topological charge as high as 140 is realized based on the super-pixel wavefront-shaping technique. More importantly, a globally adaptive feedback algorithm (GAFA) is proposed to efficiently suppress the original intensity fluctuation and achieve a flat-top PVB with dramatically reduced beam speckle contrast. The GAFA-based flat-top PVB generation method can pave the way for high-intensity vortex beam generation, which is crucial for potential applications in ICF, laser processing, optical communication and optical trapping.

Abstract:The perfect optical vortex (POV) has additional potential uses in optical trapping and optical communication, due to its diameter being independent of its topological charge. In this study, we demonstrate a double-ring vortex beam with adjustable spacing between the two rings; its size is also only minimally affected by the change of topological charge. To our knowledge, the beam satisfies the double-ring POV concept. The Fourier transform of a Bessel beam embedded with an axicon phase can theoretically produce such a beam. The experimental findings support the numerical results, demonstrating that the ring spacing between two rings can be modulated via the conical parameter, expanding the superposition of double-ring beams and that the two rings always keep the same topological charge value. We also consider the vortex array created by the double-ring beam, as well as the beam's shape. Optical trapping, orbital angular momentum multiplexing, and optical communication could all benefit from the changeable ring spacing of a double-ring vortex beam.
