Abstract:We present and implement a method for the experimental measurement of geometric phase of non-geodesic (small) circles on any SU(2) parameter space. This phase is measured by subtracting the dynamic phase contribution from the total phase accumulated. Our design does not require theoretical anticipation of this dynamic phase value and the methods are generally applicable to any system accessible to interferometric and projection measurements. Experimental implementations are presented for two settings: (1) the sphere of modes of orbital angular momentum, and (2) the Poincaré sphere of polarizations of Gaussian beams.

Abstract:Let ℚ^3 be the moduli space of oriented circles in the three dimensional unit sphere 𝕊^3 . Given a natural complex structure such space becomes a three dimensional complex manifold, with a Möbius invariant Hermitian metric h of type (2, 1). Up to Möbius transformations, all geodesics with respect to the Lorentz metric g = Re( h ) on ℚ^3 are determined to form a one-parameter family of circles on a helicoid in a space form ℝ^3, ℍ^3 or 𝕊^3 , resp. We show also that any two oriented circles in 𝕊^3 are connected by countably infinitely many geodesics in ℚ^3 .

Abstract:We firstly develop a straightforward method to generate full Poincare beams with any polarization geometry over an arbitrary order Poincare sphere. We implement this by coaxial superposition of two orthogonal circular polarized beams with alternative topological charges with the help of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Secondly we find the existence of singularity points. And the inner relationship between their characteristics and the order of Poincare spheres is also studied. In summary, this work provides a convenient and effective way to generate vector beams and to control their polarization states.

Unlike the standard Poincaré sphere, the radial dimension in the G sphere is not used to describe the partially polarized field. The G sphere is constructed by extending the basic Jones vector ba sis to the general vector basis with the continuously changeable ellipticity (spin angular momentum, SAM) and the higher dim ensional orbital angular momentum (OAM). The north and south poles of di fferent spherical shell in the G sphere represent the pair of di fferent orthogonal vector basis with di fferent ellipticity (SAM) and the opposite OAM. The higher-or de Poincaré spheres are just the two special spherical shells of the G sph ere. We present a quite flexible scheme, which can generate all the vector fields described in the G sphere. The s alient properties of this representation are able to treat the complicated geometric phase of arbitrary vector fi elds in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that for every Finsler n-sphere (S, F ) for n ≥ 3 with reversibility λ and flag curvature K satisfying ( λ λ+1 )2 < K ≤ 1, either there exist infinitely many prime closed geodesics or there exists one elliptic closed geodesic whose linearized Poincaré map has at least one eigenvalue which is an irrational multiple of π. Furthermore, there always exist three prime closed geodesics on any (S, F ) satisfying the above pinching condition.

Abstract:Geometric phase has historically been defined using closed cycles of polarization states, often derived using differential geometry on the Poincare sphere. Using the recently-developed wave model of geometric phase, we show that it is better to define geometric phase more generally, allowing every polarized wave to have a well-defined value at any point in its path. Using several example systems, we show how this approach provides more insight into the wave's behavior. Moreover, by tracking the continuous evolution of geometric phase as a wave propagates through an optical system, we encounter a natural explanation of why the conventional Poincare sphere solid angle method uses geodesic paths rather than physical paths of the polarization state.

Realization of geometric phase topology induced by multiple exceptional points

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems have Riemann surface structures of complex eigenvalues that admit singularities known as exceptional points. Combining with geometric phases of eigenstates gives rise to unique properties of non-Hermitian systems, and their classifications have been studied recently. However, the physical realizations of classes of the classifications have been relatively limited because a small number of modes and exceptional points are involved. In this work, we show in microcavities that all five classes [J.-W. Ryu, et al., Commun. Phys. 7, 109 (2024)] of three modes can emerge with three exceptional points. In demonstrations, we identified various combinations of exceptional points within a two-dimensional parameter space of a single microcavity and defined five distinct encircling loops based on three selected exceptional points. According to the classification, these loops facilitate different mode exchanges and the acquisition of additional geometric phases during the adiabatic encircling of exceptional points. Our results provide a broad description of the geometric phases-associated topology induced by multiple exceptional points in realistic physical systems.

In this paper, we investigate their magnetic flows on the unit sphere subbundle of the bundle of the contact distribution over this geodesic sphere, and show that they are smoothly conjugate to each other.

Abstract:Starting from well-known absolute instruments for perfect imaging, we introduce a type of rotational-symmetrical compact closed manifolds, namely geodesic lenses. We demonstrate that light rays confined on geodesic lenses are closed trajectories. While for optical waves, the spectrum of geodesic lens is (at least approximately) degenerate and equidistant with numerical methods. Based on this property, we show a periodical evolution of optical waves and quantum waves on geodesic lenses. Moreover, we fabricate two geodesic lenses in sub-micrometer scale, where curved light rays are observed with high accurate precision. Our results may offer a new platform to investigate light propagation on curved surfaces.

Abstract:We consider geodesic nets (critical points of a length functional on the space of embedded graphs) on doubled polygons (topological 2-spheres endowed with a flat metric away from finitely many cone singularities). We use the theorem of Gauss-Bonnet to demonstrate the existence and non-existence of specific geodesic nets on regular doubled polygons.

Abstract:The double torus provides a relativistic model for a closed 2D cosmos with topology of genus 2 and constant negative curvature. Its unfolding into an octagon extends to an octagonal tessellation of its universal covering, the hyperbolic space H^2. The tessellation is analysed with tools from hyperbolic crystallography. Actions on H^2 of groups/subgroups are identified for SU(1, 1), for a hyperbolic Coxeter group acting also on SU(1, 1), and for the homotopy group \Phi_2 whose extension is normal in the Coxeter group. Closed geodesics arise from links on H^2 between octagon centres. The direction and length of the shortest closed geodesics is computed.

Abstract:We review the extraordinary fertility and proliferation in mathematics and physics of the concept of a surface with constant and negative Gaussian curvature. In his outstanding 1868 paper Beltrami discussed how non-Euclidean geometry is actually realized and displayed in a disk on the plane. This metric is intrinsically defined and definite but only if indefinite metrics are introduced it is possible to fully understand the structure of pseudospheres. In a 3D flat space R^3 the fundamental quadric is introduced, with the same signature as the metric of R^3; this leads to 3 kinds of surfaces with constant Gaussian curvature: the sphere, the single-sheet hyperboloid and the two-sheet hyperboloid; the last one is shown to be isomorphic to Beltrami's disk. The spacetime corresponding to the single-sheet case is de Sitter cosmological model, which, due to its symmetry, has an important role in cosmology. When two of the three fundamental quadrics are combined, a simple, yet deep, solution of Einstein-Maxwell equations corresponding to a uniform electromagnetic field is obtained with many applications in mathematical physics. One of them is a "no go" theorem: when one tries to frame a Riemannian four-dimensional manifold in a Kahlerian structure, it is found that, while this is generically possible with a definite signature, in spacetime only BR fulfills the requirement. The BR metric plays an important role in the exploration of new principles in fundamental physical theories; we briefly mention some examples related to the horizon of a black hole and the dilaton in string theory.

Abstract:The S 2 ×R geometry is derived by direct product of the spherical plane S 2 and the real line R. In [9] the third author has determined the geodesic curves, geodesic balls of S 2 ×R space, computed their volume and defined the notion of the geodesic ball packing and its density. Moreover, he has developed a procedure to determine the density of the geodesic ball packing for generalized Coxeter space groups of S 2 ×R and applied this algorithm to them. E. MOLN ´ AR showed in [3], that the homogeneous 3-spaces have a unified interpretation in the projective 3-sphere PS 3 (V 4 ,V 4, R). In our work we shall use this projective model of S 2 ×R geometry and in this manner the geodesic lines, geodesic spheres can be visualized on the Euclidean screen of computer. Furthermore, we shall define the notion of the equidistant surface to two points, determine its equation and visualize it in some cases. We shall also show a possible way of making the computation simpler and obtain the equation of an equidistant surface with more possible geometric meaning. The pictures were made by the Wolfram Mathematica software.
