Abstract:The Poynting effect is a paragon of nonlinear soft matter mechanics. It is the tendency (found in all incompressible, isotropic, hyperelastic solids) exhibited by a soft block to expand vertically when sheared horizontally. It can be observed whenever the length of the cuboid is at least four times its thickness. Here we show that the Poynting effect can be easily reversed and the cuboid can shrink vertically, simply by reducing this aspect ratio. In principle, this discovery means that for a given solid, say one used as a seismic wave absorber under a building, an optimal ratio exists where vertical displacements and vibrations can be completely eliminated. Here we first recall the classical theoretical treatment of the positive Poynting effect, and then show experimentally how it can be reversed. Using finite-element simulations, we then investigate how the effect can be suppressed. We find that cubes always provide a reverse Poynting effect, irrespective of their material properties (in the third-order theory of weakly nonlinear elasticity).
Poynting and Axial Force–twist Effects in Nonlinear Elastic Mono- and Bi-Layered Cylinders: Torsion, Axial and Combined Loadings

Abstract:The Poynting effect, in which a cylinder elongates or contracts axially under torsion, is an important nonlinear phenomenon in soft materials. In this paper, analytical solutions are obtained for homogeneous and bi-layered cylinders under torsion, axial and combined loadings, employing second-order elasticity and Lagrangian equilibrium equations. Explicit parameters for judging the sign of the Poynting effect are given. It is found that the effect in a soft composite may be significantly amplified over that in homogeneous materials and that it is strongly influenced by the interface position and by the material configuration in the composite. A coupled axial force–twist effect under combined loading, i.e., the twist of a torsionally loaded cylinder can be affected by the axial loading, is also found. Comparison of the predictions with the torque-tension-twist data for cardiac papillary muscles shows reasonable agreement. The solutions also provide the basis for a mechanistic method of determining third-order elastic constants.
Nonlinear effects in composite cylinders: relations and dependence on inhomogeneities

Abstract:The extension of a cylinder subjected to torsion was investigated by Poynting (1909) and the nonlinear phenomenon has since been called the Poynting effect. Under combined axial and torsional loading, the twist is also dependent on the axial loading as shown by Wang and Wu (2014a), who named this the axial force–twist effect. This paper investigates the relations between these effects in a bilayered cylindrical composite within the framework of second-order elasticity. The results show that: (1) either effect can be positive or negative, (2) there can only be three states, e.g., under tension–torsion either both effects are negative, or both positive, or if they differ in sign the Poynting effect must be positive and the axial force–twist effect must be negative, (3) certain logical relations between the effects exist, e.g., if under tension–torsion loading the Poynting effect is negative, the axial force–twist effect must be negative, (4) there exists a reduced elastic-geometric parameter between each effect and the associated applied loading, and (5) both effects are strong functions of the elastic and geometric inhomogeneities. These findings are significant for applications in regenerative medicine such as the design of replacement tissues.
Torsion and Bistability of Double-Twist Elastomers

Abstract:We investigate the elastic properties of anisotropic elastomers with a double-twist director field, which is a model for collagen fibrils or blue phases. We observe a significant Poynting-like effect, coupling torsion (fibril twist) and extension. For freely-rotating boundary conditions, we identify a structural bistability at very small extensional strains which undergoes a saddle-node bifurcation at a critical strain -- at approximately 1% strain for a parameterization appropriate for collagen fibrils. With clamped boundary conditions appropriate for many experimental setups, the bifurcation is not present. We expect significant helical shape effects when fixed torsion does not equal the equilibrium torsion of freely-rotating boundary conditions, due to residual torques.

Abstract:Conventional strain-based mechanics theory does not account for contributions from strain gradients. Failure to include the strain gradient contributions can lead to underestimates of stresses and size-dependent behaviors in small-scaled structure [1]. This paper focus on the structural size effects on torsion of cylinders. The torsional stiffness of cylinders can be higher than conventional expectation when the cylinder size is in the nanometer - or micron-scale. Following the Saint-Venant theory of torsion, we established the equation of torsion in terms of the warping function on the basis of the nano-mechanical theory of elasticity. The torsional equations contain two higher order material length scale parameters and two conventional Lame constants. The equilibrium equation is a fourth order partial differential equation which can be reduced to two second order equations. Two formulations in terms of pseudo warping function and stress function are presented. Closed-form solutions for circular and thin wall section and series solutions for rectangular microbars have been obtained. The total torque depends only on the stresses conjugated to the strain and is only implicitly dependent on the higher order stress metrics. The solution reveals that the torsional rigidity is dependent on the higher order length scale parameters and strain gradients and increases asymptotically upward when the cylinder size is reduced to the size of the higher order length scale material parameters. The increase is most marked for thin walled cylinders, stiffening to more then 10 times the conventional value when the cylinder size is near that of the higher order length scaled parameters.

Abstract:A direct, natural extension of Hooke’s law to finite strain was achieved by R. Hill in 1978, employing the notion of work-conjugate measures of stress and strain. With Seth-Hill (Doyle-Ericksen) class of finite strain measures, this extension actually defines a broad class of compressible hyperelastic materials at finite strain, each of which retains the simple linear structure of Hooke’s law as stress–strain relationship. Several known simple elasticity models at finite strain are included as its particular examples. With a novel idea of utilizing a suitable parametric variable, here we present a unified study of the free-end torsion problem (Poynting effects) of thin-walled cylindrical tubes made of the foregoing Hill’s class of Hookean type hyperelastic materials. We show that it is possible to derive a unified exact solution to the nonlinear coupling equations relating the torque (the shear stress) and the controlling deformation quantities including, in particular, the axial length change. Discussions and comparisons concerning various Hookean type elasticity models are made based on the exact solution obtained.

Abstract:When elastic solids are sheared, a nonlinear effect named after Poynting gives rise to normal stresses or changes in volume. We provide a novel relation between the Poynting effect and the microscopic Grüneisen parameter, which quantifies how stretching shifts vibrational modes. By applying this relation to random spring networks, a minimal model for, e.g., biopolymer gels and solid foams, we find that networks contract or develop tension because they vibrate faster when stretched. The amplitude of the Poynting effect is sensitive to the network's linear elastic moduli, which can be tuned via its preparation protocol and connectivity. Finally, we show that the Poynting effect can be used to predict the finite strain scale where the material stiffens under shear.

Abstract:In this paper we analyse in detail, and for the first time, the rôle of torsion in the dynamics of twisted vortex filaments. We demonstrate that torsion may influence considerably the motion of helical vortex filaments in an incompressible perfect fluid. The binormal component of the induced velocity, asymptotically responsible for the displacement of the vortex filament in the fluid, is closely analysed. The study is performed by applying the prescription of Moore & Saffman (1972) to helices of any pitch and a new asymptotic integral formula is derived. We give a rigorous proof that the Kelvin régime and its limit behaviour are obtained as a limit form of that integral asymptotic formula. The results are compared with new calculations based on the re-elaboration of Hardin's (1982) approach and with results obtained by Levy & Forsdyke (1928) and Widnall (1972) for helices of small pitch, here also re-elaborated for the purpose.

Large deformation analysis of spontaneous twist and contraction in nematic elastomer fibres with helical director

Abstract:A cylindrical rubber fibre subject to twist will also elongate: a manifestation of Poynting's effect in large strain elasticity. Here, we construct an analogous treatment for an active rubber fibre actuated via an axisymmetric pattern of spontaneous distortion. We start by constructing an exact large-deformation solution to the equations of elasticity for such fibre subject to imposed twist and stretch, which reveals spontaneous warping and twisting of the fibre cross-section absent in passive rubbers. We then compute the corresponding non-linear elastic energy, which encompasses the Poynting effect, but is minimized by a finite spontaneous twist and stretch. In the second half of the paper, we apply these results to understand the twist-contraction actuation of nematic elastomer fibres fabricated with director-fields that encode helical patterns of contraction on heating. We first consider patterns making a constant angle with respect to the local cylindrical coordinate system (conical spiral director curves) and verify the predicted spontaneous twist, contraction and cross-section deformation via finite elements. Secondly, we consider realistic director distributions for the experimentally reported fibres fabricated by cross-linking while simultaneously applying stretch and twist. Counter-intuitively, we find that maximum actuation twist is produced by applying a finite optimal twist during fabrication. Finally, we illustrate that spontaneously twisting fibres will coil into spring-like shapes on actuation if the ends are prevented from twisting relative to each other. Such twist-torsion coupling would allow to make a tendril-like "soft-spring" actuator with low force and high linear stroke compared to the intrinsic contraction of the elastomer itself.

On the Modeling of Extension-Torsion Experimental Data for Transversely Isotropic Biological Soft Tissues

Abstract:For the problem of torsion superimposed on extension of incompressible nonlinearly elastic transversely isotropic circular cylinders, a simple asymptotic analysis is carried out on using a small parameter that reflects the moderate twisting of slender cylinders, which corresponds to a typical testing regime for biological soft tissue. The analysis is carried out for a subclass of strain-energy densities that reflect transversely isotropic material response. On using a four-parameter polynomial expression for the strain-energy density in terms of certain classical invariants, this analysis is shown to be in excellent agreement with experimental data obtained by other authors for rabbit papillary muscles. An explicit condition on the strain-energy density is obtained that determines whether the stretched cylinder tends to elongate or shorten on twisting. For the special case of pure torsion where no extension is allowed, this condition determines whether the classical or reverse Poynting effect occurs. For the rabbit papillary muscles, the theoretical results predict and the experimental results confirm that a reverse Poynting-type effect occurs where the stretched rabbit muscle tends to shorten on twisting.

Abstract:The real-size experiment on 22 centrifuge concrete filled thin-walled steel tubes demonstrated that three phases of distinct features could be observed in the process of destruction when the tube was under torsion. Based on the theories obtained from the previous related researches and the test data, an analytical method for the elastic torsion and the plastic torsion of composite members is proposed; the module expressions for composite members are obtained with the related parameters; then an analytical method for the deformation in each phase is deduced through the mode.

Abstract:The average conformation properties, such as the a priori probability Pξη and the segmental orientation function 〈P2(ζ)〉 of polymethylene chains with chain length from N=13 to N=21 are investigated by enumeration calculation method based on the rotational-isomeric state (RIS) model. Here non-local interactions of L–J potential are also considered. In the process of tensile deformation, the a priori probability Pt increases with elongation ratio λ, meanwhile the a priori probability Pg+ (or Pg−) decreases with elongation ratio λ, and it leads the average energy per bond to decrease. The segmental orientation distribution function 〈P2(ζ)〉 of short deformed polymethylene chains may be expressed in the form of〈P2(ζ)〉/(λ2−λ−1)=a(λ2−λ−1)+bwhere a and b only depend on PM chain length. Many conformations will vanish in the process of deformation. We also investigate the probability density distribution function of gyration radius P(S). For a given chain length, the maximum of P(S) increase with λ, and the distributed region of P(S) becomes smaller for large λ. Some comparisons with Flory–Fisk function of P(S) are also made. Our calculations may provide some insights into the rubber-like elasticity.

Abstract:Stretch-based constitutive models for isotropic hyperelastic materials as alternatives to the classical strain invariant models have been the subject of considerable recent attention largely motivated by application to modelling the mechanical response of soft tissues. One such four-parameter constitutive model was proposed recently by Anssari-Benam (J. Elast. 153:219–244, 2023) for incompressible isotropic hyperelastic soft materials. The model was deemed to be comprehensive in that several well-known strain-energies may be recovered for some particular and limiting values of some of the parameters. The model is a generalization of several related simpler models based on microstructural considerations that have been shown to match well with experimental data for a wide variety of soft materials. In particular, the celebrated one-term Ogden model is obtained as a special case. Here we examine the response of the new model for the problem of pure torsion for a solid circular cylinder with particular emphasis on the Poynting effects governing the lengthening or shortening of the cylinder.

Abstract:With the increasing and refined applications of silicone rubber devices in the biomedical field, it is of great significance to accurately describe and predict the mechanical behavior of them under large deformation. This paper finds that after considering the influence of higher-order shear strain on the normal stress, the Poynting effect in ribbed silicone rubber tubes with certain cross-sectional shapes exhibits a new phenomenon—a non-monotonic trend between axial deformation and twist angle. This paper develops a nonlinear finite element program for simulating large deformations of hyperelastic materials, and studies the Poynting effect in ribbed circular tubes of twisted silicone rubber. The results show that in the ribbed circular tubes with a porosity between 12% and 40% (with the number of ribs ranging from 12 to 26), there appears a normal to reverse conversion of the Poynting effect, that is, the axial extension ratio first decreases and then increases during a monotonic loading process, indicating that the influence of higher-order shear strain on normal stress cannot be ignored when the cross-sectional shape is complex. Especially in ribbed circular tubes with about 20% porosity, a substantial change of axial normal strain from −0.035% to 0.035% can be achieved within a twist angle range of 180°. Based on this, the quantitative influence of higherorder shear strain on normal stress is studied. These research results provide a theoretical basis for accurately controlling the axial expansion and contraction of twisted parts and indicate that a normal to reverse conversion of the Poynting effect can be implemented by designing the cross-sectional shape under certain conditions.

The elastoplastic torsional rigidity of the centrifugal concrete-filled thin-wall steel tubes before achieving the ultimate strength is analyzed by using the minimum potential energy energy and the relationship between effective stress and strain. Finally, an approximate solution for related practical projects is provided.
Rods coiling about a rigid constraint: Helices and perversions

Abstract:Mechanical instabilities can be exploited to design innovative structures, able to change their shape in the presence of external stimuli. In this work, we derive a mathematical model of an elastic beam subjected to an axial force and constrained to smoothly slide along a rigid support, where the distance between the rod midline and the constraint is fixed and finite. Using both theoretical and computational techniques, we characterize the bifurcations of such a mechanical system, in which the axial force and the natural curvature of the beam are used as control parameters. We show that, in the presence of a straight support, the rod can deform into shapes exhibiting helices and perversions, namely transition zones connecting together two helices with opposite chirality. The mathematical predictions of the proposed model are also compared with some experiments, showing a good quantitative agreement. In particular, we find that the buckled configurations may exhibit multiple perversions and we propose a possible explanation for this phenomenon based on the energy landscape of the mechanical system.

Torsion Instability of Anisotropic Cylindrical Tissues with Growth

Abstract:Growth shapes soft tissues not only through mass addition or volume expansion but also through deformation instabilities and consequent morphological evolution. In this paper, we probe the torsion instability of an anisotropically growing tube with fiber reinforcement, which mimics many tubular organs in animals or plants. We derive the Stroh formulation for the incremental boundary value problem and numerically solve it using the surface impedance method. A linear stability analysis is conducted to investigate the critical condition for the onset of wrinkling. The thresholds of helical wrinkling are calculated in terms of growth ratio and external load. The effect of fibers on the critical state under axial stretching is examined. It is found that the tangential growth tends to enhance the critical torsion angle but has a weak influence on the critical longitudinal mode of wrinkling, which, however, can be remarkably affected by the axial growth. Our study can help understand the formation of helical morphologies in biological materials and provide cues for engineering desired structures or devices.
Comparison of theoretical elastic couple stress predictions with physical experiments for pure torsion

Abstract:Several different versions of couple stress theory have appeared in the literature, including the indeterminate Mindlin-Tiersten-Koiter couple stress theory (MTK-CST), indeterminate symmetric modified couple stress theory (M-CST) and determinate skew-symmetric consistent couple stress theory (C-CST). First, the solutions within each of these theories for pure torsion of cylindrical bars composed of isotropic elastic material are presented and found to provide a remarkable basis for comparison with observed physical response. In particular, recent novel physical experiments to characterize torsion of micro-diameter copper wires in quasi-static tests show no significant size effect in the elastic range. This result agrees with the prediction of the skew-symmetric C-CST that there is no size effect for torsion of an elastic circular bar in quasi-static loading, because the mean curvature tensor vanishes in a pure twist deformation. On the other hand, solutions within the other two theories exhibit size-dependent torsional response, which depends upon either one or two additional material parameters, respectively, for the indeterminate symmetric M-CST or indeterminate MTK-CST. Results are presented to illustrate the magnitude of the expected size-dependence within these two theories in torsion. Interestingly, if the material length scales for copper in these two theories with size-dependent torsion is on the order of microns or larger, then the recent physical experiments in torsion would align only with the self-consistent skew-symmetric couple stress theory, which inherently shows no size effect.

Abstract:Lower bounds for the factors entering the standard notions of shear and torsion stiffness for a linearly elastic rod are established in a new and simple way. The proofs are based on the following criterion to identify the stiffness parameters entering rod theory: the rod's stored-energy density per unit length expressed in terms of force and moment resultants should equal the stored-energy density per unit length expressed in terms of stress components of a Saint-Venant cylinder subject to either flexure or torsion, according to the case. It is shown that the shear factor is always greater than one, whatever the cross section, a fact that is customarily stated without proof in textbooks of structure mechanics; and that the torsion factor is also greater than one, except when the cross section is a circle or a circular annulus, a fact that is usually proved making use of Saint-Venant's solution in terms of displacement components.

Abstract:We investigate the Saint-Venant torsion problem of a nanosized bar with arbitrary smooth cross section by enhancing the classical continuum-based model with a theory of surface elasticity based on a version of the Gurtin–Murdoch surface/interface model. An elegant analytical solution is derived by means of conformal mapping, Faber series, Fourier series, and simple matrix algebra. Our solution leads to the establishment of a complex torsion function which, in turn, allows for a concise expression for the torsional rigidity. Our results clearly demonstrate that both the stress field and the normalized torsional rigidity are size dependent. An approximate formula for the size-dependent torsional rigidity is also proposed.
