Abstract:This study focuses on the comparisons of the syntactic-semantic structures between English and Chinese middles from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and linguistic typology.The main findings are:i)The relative syntactic position of the theme of a middle causes the cross-category harmony of its predicate-argument role.ii)The degree of topicalization of a Chinese middle is greater than that of an English middle.The semantic restriction,derived from the theme of an English middle on its predicate,is greater than that of a Chinese middle on its predicate.iii)There are more verbs that can be used in Chinese middles than those used in English.iv)The predicate-argument structures between English middles and Chinese middles are different.The former is composed of "Vi+Adv" and the semantic restrictions between the two are weaker.The latter is composed of "Aux+Vi" and the semantic restrictions between the two are greater.

Abstract:Dissimilarity and similarity are two basic concepts that the study of translation frequently touches upon. The untranslatable is usually traceable to dissimilarity, and the translatable, to similarity. Correspondingly, the unity of opposites between the two profoundly exhibits a comprehensive picture of translation. This paper, proceeding with the definition of dissimilarity, probes into the relationship between selfness and otherness to reveal the cross-cultural essence of translation. Confronted with the contradiction between dissimilarity and similarity, one must consider these important factors: expression of cultural positions as well as cultural reconstruction, and the translation strategies of foreignization and domestication.

Abstract:This article considers the problem of grammatical homonymy when teaching Russian to Chinese students; special attention is paid to the use of homonyms in various aspects in Russian and Chinese. The authors of the article give examples, which include homonyms in various speech and other genres, for example, dialogue, advertising, and names. The article illustrates the use of the comparative method for teaching Chinese students to communicate in Russian and to use grammatical forms with homonyms. The training is based on modern technologies: a projector, a computer are designed to more effectively master didactic material. In order to check the degree of understanding the use of homonyms when comparing Russian and Chinese languages, exercises are proposed.

Abstract:The hypothesis that vocabulary richness of translated language is lower than that of the native language has been found in previous studies and we also assume native speakers have a larger vocabulary than non-native speakers which would present in their writings. The present article, using two vocabulary richness indicators - STTR and lambda, reevaluates the two hypotheses based on the two versions of Hongloumeng, a Chinese literary classic, translated into English respectively by Hawkes and Yang Xianyi. The result indicates that the vocabulary richness in the native speaker's (Hawkes) version is no higher than that in the non-native speaker's version and the vocabulary richness of the two translated Hongloumeng is also lower than native English fictions, though the source text were written in 18th century. A deeper investigation into the wordlists and concordance lines reveals that Hawkes used words more frequently concerning the same word; what is more, Yang used more unfamiliar words in his version, especially in translating culture-loaded words.

Abstract:Two phonemes that may induce minimal pairs constitute a phonemic contrast. Some phonemic contrasts may disappear for various reasons, which, nevertheless, does not seem to seriously impede linguistic communication. Does it mean that the disappeared phonemic contrasts are unimportant? In our study, we calculated the proportions (here termed degree of contrast) of minimal pairs to the words in which the two contrastive phonemes occur and explored the role of phonemic contrasts in the phonemic combinations. The degree of contrast of phonemes reflects the relation between phonemes. Our results indicate that (1) the average degree of contrast of Chinese phonemes declines exponentially with the increase in the number of syllables, rapidly approaching zero; (2) the average degree of contrast of Chinese consonants that differ from each other in only one distinctive feature and of the consonants that are absent in some Chinese dialects is significantly higher than that of other consonants; (3) the degree of contrast of Chinese consonants that differ from each other in only one distinctive feature is not significantly different from that of the consonants absent in some Chinese dialects; (4) Chinese phonemic combinations exhibit high degree of sparsity, which increases exponentially with the number of syllables and rapidly approaches 1. All these results show that the high degree of sparsity and the low degree of contrast of human languages not only leave enough room for new words, new dialects and new languages to appear but also contribute to effective and reliable communication, because a few phonemic mistakes are not likely to cause wrong decoding (sound recognition) and failed communication.

Abstract:This paper focuses on one of the English introductory It patterns, which is known as Thematised Comment in the Theme-rheme theory of Functional Grammar, and its Chinese translation. By examining the self-built micro-corpus, we find that in such English sentences commenting words are usually put at the beginning part and the relating parts come after, stating the facts or reasons, while the Chinese versions are usually the other way round. This language characteristic reflects the different cultural psychology or thinking habits of the two nations, which, I believe, is caused, in turn, by the different productive forces and production relations between the two places. At the same time I hold that it remains to be proven whether there are factors of geographical environment, or even of race. In short, the two languages have their respective characteristics, and it's not a wise idea to say one is better or worse than the other. In essence, translation, in a sense, is a transformation of thinking mode. Only by understanding the thinking characteristics underlying the target language, can language learners realize the transformation between languages more quickly and more smoothly.

Abstract:English idioms and Chinese idioms play very important roles in both languages. They have common characteristics of human language on one hand, but also have great differences in many aspects resulted from national traditions and customs on another hand. The paper probes into the differences and similarities between the idioms in English and Chinese languages and attempts to help people from different cultural background master the usage by comparative study, thus promote international communication. Abstract:The contemporary Chinese new homonyms refer to the words which were newly produced in contemporary Chinese,spelt and pronounced like the old words.Their origin is complex,but mainly produced in the standard spoken Chinese,or came from foreign languages or from Hong Kong and Taiwan areas.New homonyms' quantity is huge,and is also being produced unceasingly.Different kinds of new homonyms are different from one another in using scope and language using color.Moreover,they are quite imbalanced interiorly.People don't have sufficient understanding on new homonyms yet,and they may often misuse them when they apply or research on them in practice.Therefore,we should pay attention to them and hurry to research into them.

Abstract:Chinese is an isolated language. Prepositions are used to express grammatical meanings. Generally, prepositional phrases are composed of nouns. The whole prepositional phrases are mostly used as adverbials in front of sentence predicates. Uzbek is a cohesive language,affixes and auxiliaries are abundant. Affixes are placed after body parts of speech to express grammatical meanings such as location, time and object. There is no "preposition" classification in Uzbek, and most of them correspond to Chinese prepositions as "affixes or auxiliaries"

Abstract:This paper describes a corpus-based contrastive study of collocation in English and Chinese. In light of the corpus-based approach to identify functionally equivalent units, the present paper attempts to identify the collocational translation equivalents of zunshou by using a parallel corpus and two comparable corpora. This study shows that more often than not, we can find in English more than one translation equivalents. By taking collocates into consideration, we are able to establish bilingual equivalence with more accuracy. The present study indicates that semantic preference and semantic prosody play a vital role in establishing equivalence between corresponding lexical sequences in English and Chinese. The studies of collocation across languages have potentially useful implications for foreign language teaching and learning, contrastive linguistic and translation studies, as well as bilingual lexicography.

Abstract:Culture is ubiquitous and is everywhere.As an important part of nonverbal communication,the transmission of time message also has profound cultural connotation.Different cultures have shaped different concepts of time.The differences between Chinese and western culture in philosophy,historical background and social system and so on have caused their differences in concept of time and attitude toward time,and as a result,have created different modes of time orientation.The way to deal with time and use time,to a great extent,influences the effect of cross-cultural communication between them.This article,through contrastive analyses of the cultural factors causing the differences in time concept between Chinese culture and western culture,aims at a deeper understanding of the different orientations of time,in order to increase the effectiveness of cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:Having been debated and studied for more than one century, the part-of-speech classifications of contemporary Chinese words is still attracting considerable attention frommany linguists today. In this study, we aim to compare the classification systems of two lexicons C Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese (Fifth Edition) and Grammatical Knowledge-Base of Contemporary Chinese, and to observe the similarities and differences between their part-of-speech classifications of words in a comprehensive way. This paper discusses our preliminary observations, especially on the comparison of prepositions in the two lexicons. We expect that this type of contrastive studies will contribute to a deeper understanding of the parts-of-speech in Chinese, especially to the part-of-speech classification of certain Chinese words, which has long been debated.
