Abstract:English idioms and Chinese idioms play very important roles in both languages. They have common characteristics of human language on one hand, but also have great differences in many aspects resulted from national traditions and customs on another hand. The paper probes into the differences and similarities between the idioms in English and Chinese languages and attempts to help people from different cultural background master the usage by comparative study, thus promote international communication. Key words: English and Chinese idioms, differences, similarities, comparison Resume: Les proverbes occupent une position importante tant dans l’anglais que dans le chinois. Comme un phenomene linguistique, les proverbes anglais et chinois presentent des traits identiques de la langue humaine, et des caracteristiques nationales differentes. L’article present entreprend une analyse profonde sur les similitudes et differences des proverbes anglais et chinois. L’etude comparative permet aux gens de different contexte culturel de mieux maitriser l’emploi respectif des proverbes anglais et chinois, et ainsi, de promouvoir la communication internationale. Abstract:This paper,attempts to probe into the similarities and differences by comparison.Extensive cases of corresponding idioms share the same feature as being concise.In addition,many idioms can be used partially or flexibly,despite their special syntactic restrictions.On the other hand,this paper analyzes in particular the differences between English and Chinese idioms,pointing out that many English idioms might look corresponding with Chinese ones,but their meanings might be entirely different,and that the picturesque metaphors in English and Chinese idioms have,more often than not,different signifiers.

Abstract:This paper focuses on one of the English introductory It patterns, which is known as Thematised Comment in the Theme-rheme theory of Functional Grammar, and its Chinese translation. By examining the self-built micro-corpus, we find that in such English sentences commenting words are usually put at the beginning part and the relating parts come after, stating the facts or reasons, while the Chinese versions are usually the other way round. This language characteristic reflects the different cultural psychology or thinking habits of the two nations, which, I believe, is caused, in turn, by the different productive forces and production relations between the two places. At the same time I hold that it remains to be proven whether there are factors of geographical environment, or even of race. In short, the two languages have their respective characteristics, and it's not a wise idea to say one is better or worse than the other. In essence, translation, in a sense, is a transformation of thinking mode. Only by understanding the thinking characteristics underlying the target language, can language learners realize the transformation between languages more quickly and more smoothly.

Abstract:As language and culture are closely related and inseparable,a language will be influenced by its native culture in varying degrees.Having distinctive national features,the Chinese Four-character idioms are deeply marked by the brand of the nation.This paper studies the cultural differences among the Chinese Four-character idioms,Russian and English idioms from the aspects of geographical environments,religious beliefs,the cultural connotations of animals and plants,numbers and colors.Furthermore,on the basis of the translation principles——"faithfulness","smoothness" and "functional equivalence",this paper also discusses the different translation methods of the Chinese "four-character" idioms.

Abstract:Dissimilarity and similarity are two basic concepts that the study of translation frequently touches upon. The untranslatable is usually traceable to dissimilarity, and the translatable, to similarity. Correspondingly, the unity of opposites between the two profoundly exhibits a comprehensive picture of translation. This paper, proceeding with the definition of dissimilarity, probes into the relationship between selfness and otherness to reveal the cross-cultural essence of translation. Confronted with the contradiction between dissimilarity and similarity, one must consider these important factors: expression of cultural positions as well as cultural reconstruction, and the translation strategies of foreignization and domestication.

Abstract:Idiom is the crystallization of the thought which coagulates through the long-term practice and people’s cognition, reflecting their wisdom. Because of the richness of language, there are a number of idioms which contain color words in both English and Chinese. Color idiom is an important part in these two languages. It is worth discussing the characteristics of English idioms. It is believed that it will be helpful to enable people both to have a more exact understanding of English idioms and to use them correctly on different occasions, and more important is that it is also of great significance in language teaching and cultural inheritance. A preliminary research on characteristics of English idioms with cross-cultural communication considerations will be introduced in this paper, hoping to cast some enlightenment on further research in this field.
