Cultural Differences and the Translation of the Chinese Four-character Idioms

Abstract:As language and culture are closely related and inseparable,a language will be influenced by its native culture in varying degrees.Having distinctive national features,the Chinese Four-character idioms are deeply marked by the brand of the nation.This paper studies the cultural differences among the Chinese Four-character idioms,Russian and English idioms from the aspects of geographical environments,religious beliefs,the cultural connotations of animals and plants,numbers and colors.Furthermore,on the basis of the translation principles——"faithfulness","smoothness" and "functional equivalence",this paper also discusses the different translation methods of the Chinese "four-character" idioms.
