Abstract:We highlight the current understanding of mechanisms of phase transformation, strengthening, and the role of alloying elements in aluminum, magnesium, and titanium alloys, including nucleation and growth of precipitates, precipitate–dislocation interactions, solute segregation at precipitate–matrix interfaces and planar defects, and the development of strengthening models that account for the real particle shape. Future directions such as atomic-scale elemental mapping and computation, and the influence of particle shape on mechanical properties are discussed. With the combination of advanced characterization and computational tools, it is anticipated that much less time will be needed to develop the next generation of light alloys.

Abstract:A material's properties are derived from its constituent material composition and its structural hierarchy across length scales down to the nanometer level. At submicron length scales, materials exhibit unique size-affected mechanical properties such as enhanced strength, ductility, and flaw tolerance, but these are generally lost in bulk materials. Emerging fabrication methods have enabled the creation of materials with controllable architectures down to the nanoscale. These micro- and nanoarchitected materials utilize both resilient architectures and size-affected constituent materials to achieve unprecedented mechanical properties such as ultrahigh strength at low density, recoverability after large applied strains in intrinsically brittle materials, and metamaterial properties such as chirality and negative static compressibility. In this article, we describe the governing principles behind these materials and outline recent progress in the field. We unravel the details of the deformation and failure processes to facilitate a fundamental understanding of effective materials properties and provide a guideline for the design of the next generation of nanoarchitected materials.

Abstract:Abstract With the ability to locate and identify atoms in three dimensions, atom-probe tomography (APT) has revolutionized our understanding of structure-property relationships in materials used for structural applications. The atomic-scale details of clusters, second phases, and microstructural defects that control alloy properties have been investigated, providing an unprecedented level of detail on the origins of aging behavior, strength, creep, fracture toughness, corrosion, and irradiation resistance. Moreover, atomic-scale microscopy combined with atomistic simulation and theoretical modeling of material behavior can guide new alloy design. In this article, selected examples highlight how APT has led to a deeper understanding of materials structures and therefore properties, starting with the phase transformations controlling the aging and strengthening behavior of complex Al-, Fe-, and Ni-based alloys systems. The chemistry of interfaces and structural defects that play a crucial role in high-temperature strengthening, fracture, and corrosion resistance are also discussed, with particular reference to Zr- and Al-alloys and FeAl intermetallics.

Abstract:The trade-off of strength and ductility of metals has long plagued materials scientists. To resolve this issue, great efforts have been devoted over the past decades to developing a variety of technological pathways for effectively tailoring the microstructure of metallic materials. Here, we review the recent advanced nanostructure design strategies for purposely fabricating heterogeneous nanostructures in crystalline and non-crystalline metallic materials. Several representative structural approaches are introduced, including (1) hierarchical nanotwinned (HNT) structures, extreme grain refinement and dislocation architectures etc. for crystalline metals; (2) nanoglass structure for non-crystalline alloys, i.e. metallic glasses (MGs); and (3) a series of supra-nano-dual-phase (SNDP) nanostructures for composite alloys. The mechanical properties are further optimized by manipulating these nanostructures, especially coupling multiple advanced nanostructures into one material. Particularly, the newly developed SNDP nanostructures greatly enrich the nanostructure design strategies by utilizing supra-nano sized crystals and MGs, which exhibit unique size and synergistic effects. The origins of these gratifying properties are discussed in this review. Furthermore, based on a comprehensive understanding of microscopic mechanisms, a broad vision of strategies towards high strength and high ductility are proposed to promote future innovations.

Abstract:Many emerging applications in microscale engineering rely on the fabrication of three-dimensional architectures in inorganic materials. Small-scale additive manufacturing (AM) aspires to provide flexible and facile access to these geometries. Yet, the synthesis of device-grade inorganic materials is still a key challenge towards the implementation of AM in microfabrication. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the microstructural and mechanical properties of metals fabricated by most state-of-the-art AM methods that offer a spatial resolution $\leq$10$\mu$m. Standardized sets of samples were studied by cross-sectional electron microscopy, nanoindentation and microcompression. We show that current microscale AM techniques synthesize metals with a wide range of microstructures and elastic and plastic properties, including materials of dense and crystalline microstructure with excellent mechanical properties that compare well to those of thin-film nanocrystalline materials. The large variation in materials performance can be related to the individual microstructure, which in turn is coupled to the various physico-chemical principles exploited by the different printing methods. The study provides practical guidelines for users of small-scale additive methods and establishes a baseline for the future optimization of the properties of printed metallic objects $-$ a significant step towards the potential establishment of AM techniques in microfabrication.

Abstract:Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing technology that uses a laser beam to melt powder materials together layer by layer for solid part fabrication. Due to its superior rapid prototyping capability of three-dimensional structures, SLM has been used for widespread industrial applications including aerospace, automotive, electronics, and biomedical devices. As a state-of-the-art technology, ongoing investigations are being conducted to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of SLM. In particular, understanding of microstructure evolution during SLM is essential to achieve improved process control and ensure the performance of laser-fabricated components. This paper is to review the recent research and development progress in SLM of metallic materials with a focus on the process–microstructure relationship. The grain growth and porosity evolution as affected by laser processing parameters in the SLM process are discussed. Phase transformation in SLM of steel and titanium alloys is studied. The formation of precipitates in SLM of titanium, nickel, and aluminum/magnesium alloys is reviewed. The balling phenomenon and cracking behaviors during SLM are discussed. In addition, the recent development of computational modeling of microstructure evolution during SLM is investigated.

Abstract:Nowadays, most structural integrity concepts rely on simplified isotropic ma-terial data that are used within continuum mechanics modeling approaches. In contrast, modern casting and forming processes yield complex microstruc-tures coming along with pronounced gradients in the material's properties in various length scales. By means of additive manufacturing. bionics-inspired structures can be perfectly adapted to the space-resolved load distribution. Specific temperature control during solidification or heat treatment allow for usage of anisotropy and precipitation effects for materials optimization down to the atomic length scale. The present paper shows the significance and practical application of a three-dimensional correlation between the material's microstructure and its technical properties.

Abstract:Metallic microlattice is a new class of material that combines useful mechanical properties of metals with smart geometrical orientations providing greater stiffness, strength-to-weight ratio and good energy absorption capacity than other types of cellular materials used in sandwich construction such as honeycomb, folded and foam. Metallic microlattices consist of micro struts stacked in different arrangements and most of the volume is occupied by air voids. Relative density and strut stacking order are the prime design variables of this ultralight material and the mechanical properties could be engineered by controlling these parameters. The base metal i.e. stainless steel, titanium alloy etc. used in producing microlattices, obviously, would affect its behavior. A number of processes are reported in literature to produce metallic microlattices, which could significantly affect its mechanical properties. This paper presents an overview of manufacturing and processing of microlattices with the corresponding mechanical properties. Current techniques adopted for modeling its structural response are discussed herein. Possible future uses of microlattices and the demonstrated use of cellular materials analogous to applications of microlattices are also explored in this paper as practical applications are yet to be demonstrated for this innovative ultralight material.

Abstract:Abstract This is a viewpoint paper on recent progress in the understanding of the microstructure–property relations of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS). These alloys constitute a class of high-strength, formable steels that are designed mainly as sheet products for the transportation sector. AHSS have often very complex and hierarchical microstructures consisting of ferrite, austenite, bainite, or martensite matrix or of duplex or even multiphase mixtures of these constituents, sometimes enriched with precipitates. This complexity makes it challenging to establish reliable and mechanism-based microstructure–property relationships. A number of excellent studies already exist about the different types of AHSS (such as dual-phase steels, complex phase steels, transformation-induced plasticity steels, twinning-induced plasticity steels, bainitic steels, quenching and partitioning steels, press hardening steels, etc .) and several overviews appeared in which their engineering features related to mechanical properties and forming were discussed. This article reviews recent progress in the understanding of microstructures and alloy design in this field, placing particular attention on the deformation and strain hardening mechanisms of Mn-containing steels that utilize complex dislocation substructures, nanoscale precipitation patterns, deformation-driven transformation, and twinning effects. Recent developments on microalloyed nanoprecipitation hardened and press hardening steels are also reviewed. Besides providing a critical discussion of their microstructures and properties, vital features such as their resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and damage formation are also evaluated. We also present latest progress in advanced characterization and modeling techniques applied to AHSS. Finally, emerging topics such as machine learning, through-process simulation, and additive manufacturing of AHSS are discussed. The aim of this viewpoint is to identify similarities in the deformation and damage mechanisms among these various types of advanced steels and to use these observations for their further development and maturation.

Abstract:Steels with medium manganese (Mn) content (3 similar to 12 wt-%) have emerged as a new alloy class and received considerable attention during the last decade. The microstructure and mechanical response of such alloys show significant differences from those of established steel grades, especially pertaining to the microstructural variety that can be tuned and the associated micromechanisms activated during deformation. The interplay and tuning opportunities between composition and the many microstructural features allow to trigger almost all known strengthening and strain-hardening mechanisms, enabling excellent strength-ductility synergy, at relatively lean alloy content. Previous investigations have revealed a high degree of microstructure and deformation complexity in such steels, but the underlying mechanisms are not adequately discussed and acknowledged. This encourages us to critically review and discuss these materials, focusing on the progress in fundamental research, with the aim to obtain better understanding and enable further progress in this field. The review addresses the main phase transformation phenomena in these steels and their mechanical behaviour, covering the whole inelastic deformation regime including yielding, strain hardening, plastic instability and damage. Based on these insights, the relationships between processing, microstructure and mechanical properties are critically assessed and rationalized. Open questions and challenges with respect to both, fundamental studies and industrial production are also identified and discussed to guide future research efforts.

Abstract:In recent years, the advent of machine learning (ML) in materials science has provided a new tool for accelerating the design and discovery of new materials with a superior combination of mechanical properties for structural applications. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the current status of the ML-aided design and development of metallic alloys for structural applications, including high-performance copper alloys, nickel- and cobalt-based superalloys, titanium alloys for biomedical applications and high strength steel. We also present our perspectives regarding the further acceleration of data-driven discovery, development, design and deployment of metallic structural materials and the adoption of ML-based techniques in this endeavor.

Abstract:： In recent years, the increasing demand on the international commercial launching has been promoting the development of integrative manufacturing. The deformation control of the structures becomes one of the main problems about the quality control. The porosity, segregation and grain size and other microstructural characteristics in casting have a crucial influence on mechanical behavior of materials in integrative manufacturing processes for aerospace Al-Cu alloys. Understanding the relation between casting defects and mechanical properties is the base to formulate and predict the complicated structural deformation. The distribution of the porosity, chemical composition, and precipitates is quantitatively characterized for the ongoing through-process research. The models are investigated to present the effects of the quench-induced precipitates, porosity and segregation on elongation, yield strength, flow stress, etc. The research deepens the understanding on the evolution of mechanical properties of Al-Cu alloy, which is the base to establish the microstructural characteristics-based constitutive model. It will provide theoretical support and technical guidance for the integrative manufacturing of large aerospace structures.

Abstract:Metallic glass-reinforced metal matrix composites are an emerging class of composite materials. The metallic nature and the high mechanical strength of the reinforcing phase offers unique possibilities for improving the engineering performance of composites. Understanding the structure at the amorphous/crystalline interfaces and the deformation behavior of these composites is of vital importance for their further development and potential application. In the present work, Zr-based metallic glass fibers have been introduced in Al7075 alloy (Al-Zn-Mg-Cu) matrices using spark plasma sintering (SPS) producing composites with low porosity. The addition of metallic glass reinforcements in the Al-based matrix significantly improves the mechanical behavior of the composites in compression. High-resolution TEM observations at the interface reveal the formation of a thin interdiffusion layer able to provide good bonding between the reinforcing phase and the Al-based matrix. The deformation behavior of the composites was studied, indicating that local plastic deformation occurred in the matrix near the glassy reinforcements followed by the initiation and propagation of cracks mainly through the matrix. The reinforcing phase is seen to inhibit the plastic deformation and retard the crack propagation. The findings offer new insights into the mechanical behavior of metal matrix composites reinforced with metallic glasses.

Abstract:The development of structural materials with outstanding mechanical response has long been sought for innumerable industrial, technological, and even biomedical applications. However, these compounds tend to derive their fascinating properties from a myriad of interactions spanning multiple scales, from localized chemical bonding to macroscopic interactions between grains. This diversity has limited the ability of researchers to develop new materials on a reasonable timeline. Fortunately, the advent of machine learning in materials science has provided a new approach to analyze high-dimensional space and identify correlations among the structure-composition-property-processing relationships that may have been previously missed. In this review, we examine some successful examples of using data science to improve known structural materials by analyzing fatigue and failure, and we discuss approaches to develop entirely new classes of structural materials in complex composition spaces including high-entropy alloys and bulk metallic glasses. Highlighting the recent advancement in this field demonstrates the power of data-driven methodologies that will hopefully lead to the production of market-ready structural materials.
