Abstract:In this study, emulsion polymerized styrene butadiene rubber (E-SBR) and porous styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) composites were attached at the bottom of the pontoons to evaluate the mitigation of heave motion response (HMR) of the semi-submersible platform (SSP). The analytical approach using the Laplace equation and associated boundary conditions was used to solve the problem. The effectiveness of this method was validated using the existing experimental data from a conventional SSP without porous SBR composites. The recovered heave response amplitude operators (RAOs) were compared to the available experimental data using the analytical solution. The analytical results revealed a close agreement with a root mean square of 0.45 % and a correlation coefficient of 0.82. As a result, it was determined how well the porous SBR and E-SBR composites attached to the SSP mitigated HMR. Further, the SSPs modified with and without SBRs were compared, and the results showed that porous SBR composites reduced a minimum of about 10 % HMR in extreme sea conditions and a maximum of about 50 % HMR in the working sea conditions compared to the standard platform. The improvement of the HMR exhibited a rising trend as the modulus elasticity of the porous SBR composites increased. In addition, the fine damping properties of the porous SBR composites by friction and sliding virtually eliminate the risk of creating a resonance phenomenon in an SSP.
