Abstract:We calculate some infinite sums containing the digamma function in closed-form. These sums are related either to the incomplete beta function or to the Bessel functions. The calculations yield interesting new results as by-products, such as parameter differentiation formulas for the beta incomplete function, reduction formulas of $_{3}F_{2}$ hypergeometric functions, or a definite integral which does not seem to be tabulated in the most common literature. As an application of some sums involving the digamma function, we have calculated some redution formulas for the parameter differentiation of the Mittag-Leffler function and the Wright function.

Abstract:We present an iterative method to obtain approximations to Bessel functions of the first kind $J_p(x)$ ($p>-1$) via the repeated application of an integral operator to an initial seed function $f_0(x)$. The class of seed functions $f_0(x)$ leading to sets of increasingly accurate approximations $f_n(x)$ is considerably large and includes any polynomial. When the operator is applied once to a polynomial of degree $s$, it yields a polynomial of degree $s+2$, and so the iteration of this operator generates sets of increasingly better polynomial approximations of increasing degree. We focus on the set of polynomial approximations generated from the seed function $f_0(x)=1$. This set of polynomials is not only useful for the computation of $J_p(x)$, but also from a physical point of view, as it describes the long-time decay modes of certain fractional diffusion and diffusion-wave problems.

Abstract:The numerical evaluation of an individual Bessel or Hankel function of large order and large argument is a notoriously problematic issue in physics. Recurrence relations are inefficient when an individual function of high order and argument is to be evaluated. The coefficients in the well-known uniform asymptotic expansions have a complex mathematical structure which involves Airy functions. For Bessel and Hankel functions, we present an adapted algorithm which relies on a combination of three methods: (i) numerical evaluation of Debye polynomials, (ii) calculation of Airy functions with special emphasis on their Stokes lines, and (iii) resummation of the entire uniform asymptotic expansion of the Bessel and Hankel functions by nonlinear sequence transformations. In general, for an evaluation of a special function, we advocate the use of nonlinear sequence transformations in order to bridge the gap between the asymptotic expansion for large argument and the Taylor expansion for small argument ("principle of asymptotic overlap"). This general principle needs to be strongly adapted to the current case, taking into account the complex phase of the argument. Combining the indicated techniques, we observe that it possible to extend the range of applicability of existing algorithms. Numerical examples and reference values are given.

Abstract:In this paper we study the following Bessel series $\sum _{l=1}^{\infty } {J_{l+m'}(r)J_{l+m}(r)}{(l+\beta)^\alpha}$ for any $m,m'\in\mathbb{Z}$, $\alpha\in\mathbb{R}$ and $\beta>-1$. They are a particular case of the second type Neumann series of Bessel functions of the first kind. More specifically, we derive fully explicit integral representations and study the asymptotic behavior with explicit terms. As a corollary, the asymptotic behavior of series of the derivatives of Bessel functions can be understood.

Abstract:I reconsider the approximation of Bessel functions with finite sums of trigonometric functions, in the light of recent evaluations of Neumann-Bessel series with trigonometric coefficients. A proper choice of the angle allows for an efficient choice of the trigonometric sum. Based on these series, I also obtain straightforward non-standard evaluations of new parametric sums with powers of cosine and sine functions.

Abstract:The article discusses the fractional powers of the Bessel operator and their numerical implementation. An extensive literature is devoted to the study of fractional powers of the Laplace operator and their applications. Such degrees are used in the construction of functional spaces, in the natural generalization of the Schrödinger equation in quantum theory, in the construction of the models of acoustic wave propagation in complex media (for example, biological tissues) and space-time models of anomalous (very slow or very fast) diffusion, in spectral theory etc. If we assume the radiality of the function on which the Laplace operator acts, then we receive the problem of constructing the fractional power of the Bessel operator. We propose to use a compositional method for constructing the operators mentioned earlier, which leads to constructions similar in their properties to the Riesz derivatives. The Hankel transform is considered as a basic integral transformation. On its basis, the compositional method proposed by V.V. Katrakhov and S.M. Sitnik, negative powers of the Bessel operator are constructed. The resulting operator contains the Gaussian hypergeometric function in the kernel. For further study, the generalized translation operator is considered in the article, and its properties are proved. For constructing a positive fractional power of the Bessel operator known methods of regularization of the integral are considered. Then, a scheme for the numerical calculation of fractional powers of the Bessel operator is proposed. This scheme is based on the Taylor--Delsarte formula obtained by B.M. Levitan.

Abstract:We describe a method for the rapid numerical evaluation of the Bessel functions of the first and second kinds of nonnegative real orders and positive arguments. Our algorithm makes use of the well-known observation that although the Bessel functions themselves are expensive to represent via piecewise polynomial expansions, the logarithms of certain solutions of Bessel's equation are not. We exploit this observation by numerically precomputing the logarithms of carefully chosen Bessel functions and representing them with piecewise bivariate Chebyshev expansions. Our scheme is able to evaluate Bessel functions of orders between $0$ and $1\sep,000\sep,000\sep,000$ at essentially any positive real argument. In that regime, it is competitive with existing methods for the rapid evaluation of Bessel functions and has several advantages over them. First, our approach is quite general and can be readily applied to many other special functions which satisfy second order ordinary differential equations. Second, by calculating the logarithms of the Bessel functions rather than the Bessel functions themselves, we avoid many issues which arise from numerical overflow and underflow. Third, in the oscillatory regime, our algorithm calculates the values of a nonoscillatory phase function for Bessel's differential equation and its derivative. These quantities are useful for computing the zeros of Bessel functions, as well as for rapidly applying the Fourier-Bessel transform. The results of extensive numerical experiments demonstrating the efficacy of our algorithm are presented. A Fortran package which includes our code for evaluating the Bessel functions as well as our code for all of the numerical experiments described here is publically available.

Uniform asymptotic expansions for the zeros of Bessel functions

Abstract:Reformulated uniform asymptotic expansions are derived for ordinary differential equations having a large parameter and a simple turning point. These involve Airy functions, but not their derivatives, unlike traditional asymptotic expansions. From these, asymptotic expansions are derived for the zeros of Bessel functions that are valid for large positive values of the order, uniformly valid for all the zeros. The coefficients in the expansions are explicitly given elementary functions, and similar expansions are derived for the zeros of the derivatives of Bessel functions.

The variation of Barnes and Bessel zeta functions

Abstract:We consider the variation of two fundamental types of zeta functions that arise in the study of both physical and analytical problems in geometric settings involving conical singularities. These are the Barnes zeta functions and the Bessel zeta functions. Although the series used to define them do not converge at zero, using methods of complex analysis we are able to calculate the derivatives of these zeta functions at zero. These zeta functions depend critically on a certain parameter, and we calculate the variation of these derivatives with respect to the parameter. For integer values of the parameter, we obtain a new expression for the variation of the Barnes zeta function with respect to the parameter in terms of special functions. For the Bessel zeta functions, we obtain two different expressions for the variation via two independent methods. Of course, the expressions should be equal, and we verify this by demonstrating several identities for both special and elementary functions. We encountered these zeta functions while working with determinants of Laplace operators on cones and angular sectors.

Abstract:Motivated by the problem of spherical summability of products of Fourier series, we study the boundedness of the bilinear Bochner-Riesz multipliers $(1 - {\left| \xi \right|^2} - {\left| \eta \right|^2})_ + ^\delta $ and make some advances in this investigation. We obtain an optimal result concerning the boundedness of these means from L 2 × L 2 into L 1 with minimal smoothness, i.e., any δ > 0, and we obtain estimates for other pairs of spaces for larger values of δ. Our study is broad enough to encompass general bilinear multipliers m(ξ, η) radial in ξ and η with minimal smoothness, measured in Sobolev space norms. The results obtained are based on a variety of techniques that include Fourier series expansions, orthogonality, and bilinear restriction and extension theorems.

Abstract:Among `empirical' methods of estimating oxygen abundances in extragalactic HII regions, the use of the ratio of nebular lines of [O III] and [N II], first introduced by Alloin et al. in 1979, is reappraised with modern calibration data and shown to have certain advantages over R23 = ([O II] + [O III])/Hbeta and N2 = [NII] 6583/Halpha, particularly when applied to star-forming galaxies at high redshifts.

Abstract:We generalise the integration by parts formulae obtained in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1811.00518v5" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1811.00518v5">arXiv:1811.00518v5</a> [math.PR] to Bessel bridges on $[0,1]$ with arbitrary boundary values, as well as Bessel processes with arbitrary initial conditions. This allows us to write, formally, the corresponding dynamics using renormalised local times, thus extending the Bessel SPDEs of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1811.00518v5" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1811.00518v5">arXiv:1811.00518v5</a> [math.PR] to general Dirichlet boundary conditions. We also prove a dynamical result for the case of dimension $2$, by providing a weak construction of the gradient dynamics corresponding to a $2$-dimensional Bessel bridge.

Abstract:A remarkable result (which is of considerable theoretical importance) is the celebrated Hadamard expansion for the modified Bessel function Iv(z) in a (convergent) series of the incomplete Gamma function γ(α,z).
