Abstract:Lithium (Li) is the most valuable metal in spent lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, but its recovery has become a challenge in electronic waste recovery because of its relatively low content and inconsistent quality. This study proposes an acid-free and selective Li extraction process to successfully achieve the isomorphic substitution of Li in LiFePO4 crystals with sodium (Na). The method uses low-cost and nontoxic sodium chloride (NaCl) as a cogrinding reagent via a mechanical force-induced solid-phase reaction. X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations demonstrated the evidence of Li/Na isomorphic substitution, while XPS spectra of Fe 2p, P 2p, and O 1s revealed that the coordination environment of these elements was not significantly altered. Density functional theory calculations further provided evidence that Na and Li share similar outer electron arrangements and coordination environments, favoring Na over Fe as a replacement for Li in LiFePO4. Additionally, the regeneration of NaCl and the recovery of precipitated Li2CO3 were simultaneously achieved with Na2CO3 as the sole reagent. This concise and efficient acid-free mechanochemical process for Li extraction is a promising candidate for feasible recycling technology of Li from spent LiFePO4 batteries. The proposed process is particularly appealing because of its high selectivity, considerable economic advantages, and environmental benefits.

Abstract:This study provides a green, economical, and effective approach for selective recovery of lithium from spent LFP battery by inducing electron transfer through mechanochemical activation, and the leaching solution was simultaneously converted to a magnetic functional material LiFe5O8. In the mechanochemical process, only ferric chloride was used as a grinding agent. Experimental results showed that more than 97 wt% of lithium in the cathode materials could be selectively recovered with a purity of 99.9% under optimal conditions (FeCl3:LiFePO4 mass ratio of 1.2:1, rotary speed of 600 rpm, and reaction time of 30 min). Mechanism analysis indicated the key point was that electrons were transferred to ferric chloride from LFP cathode material, and the LFP was oxidized to iron phosphate during mechanochemical activation, but the olivine structure of the cathode material remained unchanged. Therefore, lithium could be easily extracted from the olivine structure. In addition, the LiFe5O8 synthesized from spent LFP battery has good magnetic properties, in which the saturation magnetization (Ms) was 49.23 emu/g. Economic analysis indicated that the income from recycling one ton of spent LFP batteries was $4959.39. It is confident that this study developed a green and economic process for high-value-added recycling of spent LFP batteries.

Abstract:In recent years, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries have been widely used in the electric vehicle industry. The recycling of spent LFP will be propitious to conserving resources and alleviating the environmental risks it poses. In this study, a selective extraction method for lithium from spent LFP was proposed using nitric acid. Lithium leached into the liquid phase, while P and Fe remained in the leaching residue. Under the conditions of 120°C, HNO 3 /Li molar ratio of 2, and time of 2 h, the leaching efficiency of lithium reached 99.5 %, with a selectivity reaching 82.1 %. Initially, LFP was decomposed to liberate Li, Fe, and P in the liquid phase. Subsequently, ferrous ions were oxidized to trivalent, high-valent iron ions re-precipitated as FePO 4 ·2 H 2 O. Thermodynamic calculations indicate that the temperature and pH value of the extraction system have significant influence on both the oxidation and reprecipitation steps. An imbalance of Fe/P ratio (<1) in the raw material hinders the selectivity of lithium extraction, and supplementing this portion of Fe can enhance the selectivity to over 90 %. Additionally, LiCO 3 and anhydrous FePO 4 were effectively regenerated from the leachate and residue. This study provides a novel approach for the recycling of spent LFP and probably contributes to the sustainability of the lithium ion battery industry.

Abstract:Oxidation pressure leaching was proposed to selectively dissolve Li from spent LiFePO 4 batteries in a stoichiometric sulfuric acid solution. Using O 2 as an oxidant and stoichiometric sulfuric acid as leaching agent, above 97% of Li was leached into the solution, whereas more than 99% of Fe remained in the leaching residue, enabling a relatively low cost for one-step separation of Li and Fe. And then, by adjusting the pH of leachate, above 95% of Li was recovered in the form of the Li 3 PO 4 product through iron removal and chemical precipitation of phosphate.

Abstract:Waste Management &Research, Ahead of Print. With the continuous development of new energy vehicles, the number of decommissioned lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries has been constantly increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to recover metal from spent LiFePO4 batteries due to the high potential for environmental protection and high resource value. In this study, sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) was selected as the oxidant to regulate and control the oxidation state and proton activity of the leaching solution through its high oxidizing ability. Selective recovery of lithium from LiFePO4 batteries was achieved by oxidizing LiFePO4 to iron phosphate (FePO4) during the leaching process. This paper reports an extensive investigation of the effects of various factors, including the acid concentration, initial volume fraction of the oxidant, reaction temperature, solid–liquid ratio, and reaction time, on lithium leaching. Li+ reached a high leaching rate of 93.3% within 5 minutes even at a low concentration of sulphuric acid (H2SO4), and high-purity lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) was obtained through impurity removal and precipitation reactions. In addition, the leaching mechanism was analysed by both X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization. The results show that the obtained high lithium-ion (Li+) leaching efficiency and fast Li+ leaching time can be ascribed to the superior oxidizing properties of Na2S2O8 and the stability of the crystal structure of LiFePO4 during the oxidative leaching process. The adopted method has significant advantages in terms of safety, efficiency and environmental protection, which are conducive to the sustainable development of lithium batteries.

Abstract:With the large-scale application of LiFePO4 (LFP) in energy storage and electric vehicles, the recycling of spent lithium LFP batteries has gained more attention. However, recycling spent LFP is less economically feasible owing to the poor economic value of Fe products, which causes a problem for both the efficiency and economy. This work proposes a highly economical acid-free mechanochemical approach for the efficient and selective extraction of lithium (Li) from spent LFP battery cathode materials. The selective release of 98.9 % of Li from the LFP crystal structure is achieved at a reaction time of 5 h, a rotational speed of 500 rpm, and sodium citrate (Na3Cit) to LFP mass ratio of 10. Meanwhile, Fe is reserved in the form of FePO4 in the olivine structure. The use of Na3Cit as a co-milling agent ensures a pollution-free recovery process and efficient extraction of Li+. The chelation of Li+ with organic ligands (Cit3-) is the key to the efficient selective recovery of Li+ from the olivine LFP structure via the mechanochemical process. The economic analysis indicates that the method is feasible and ensures industrial viability. The acid-free mechanochemical (MC) process reported in this work provides a novel route to selectively recover Li from spent LFP efficiently and highly economically.

Abstract:The environmental and economic benefits of recycling spent LiFePO4 batteries are becoming increasingly important. Nevertheless, the reprocessing of this type of material by conventional processes remains a challenge due to the difficulties of Li and Fe separation and low product purity. Herein, a new approach for recovering Li to separate iron and phosphorus from spent LiFePO4 cathode materials is developed. Selective separation of Li can be achieved by oxidation roasting followed by low-acid pressure leaching. During the oxidation-roasting stage, almost all the stable LiFePO4 cathode materials were first transformed into Li3Fe2(PO4)3 and Fe2O3, with the most suitable oxidation-roasting temperature determined to be 550 °C. Then, >96% of Li could be extracted using 0.5 mol·L−1 H2SO4 with an L/S ratio of 150 g·L−1 at 110 °C for 1 h; in contrast, the leaching of Fe was 0.03%. The mineral-phase composition of the leaching residues mainly includes FePO4·2H2O, Fe2O3, and C, which can be used as a raw material for preparing battery-grade FePO4. These findings demonstrate that the recycling process has the advantages of high selectivity for Li, excellent reaction kinetics, low acid consumption, and free oxidizing agent that may benefit the development of a circular economy.

Abstract:In recent years, electric vehicle is greatly flourishing, while lithium iron phosphate batteries are vigorously developed due to their low cost and high stability. Since it is expected that the first batch of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries will be retired at the peak in 2025, it is crucial to develop an environmentally and efficient recycling method. In this study, an acid-assisted electrochemical extraction method of lithium ions from LFP powder was proposed. Part of the LFP powder was leached directly by acid, and the leached ferrous ions were separated by oxidation precipitation and electroplating. The remaining LFP powder was directly oxidized by the anode to release lithium ions. The leaching efficiency of lithium ion reached up to 99.89 % and the leaching efficiency of iron ion was kept at a very low value of less than 0.2 %. The selective separation of lithium ion can be efficiently achieved during the leaching process. After evaporation and concentration, the lithium ions were recovered as product of high-purity lithium phosphate. Compared with other recycling methods, the proposed recovery method used less reagents and generated little waste. This process presents a novel green recycling pathway for the potentially selective leaching and recovery of spent LFP batteries.

Abstract:Using oxidizing compounds to handle the recycling of discarded lithium batteries has advanced significantly in recent years. One of the most prominent methods is the sintered electrode powder treatment using pre-used additives, with an aqueous solution of the oxidizing agent fueling highly selective lithium extraction and transition metals retention in the refractory material. Herein, phosphoric acid (H3PO4) was used as the exchanger and hydrogen ions provider, the oxidant (K2S2O8) activity was driven by heating, the raw material structure was deformed and adjusted by the oxidizing drive, and lithium was exhausted, while manganese was converted into manganese(III) phosphate hydrate and manganese dioxide insoluble material. The optimized conditions resulted in a lithium leaching rate of 94.16% and a separation factor of 95.74%, while the corresponding manganese leaching rate was limited to less than 5%. The X-ray diffraction, X-ray spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements were used to investigate the influence of oxidation driving force and lithium leaching. Finally, the lithium leach solution was continuously stirred with sodium carbonate in boiling water to obtain the precipitate, which was separated and washed several times to obtain high-purity lithium carbonate.

Abstract:The environmentally friendly and efficient recovery of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can mitigate environmental pollution and enhance resource utilization efficiency. This study proposed a process for coating spent NCM cathode powder (LiNi x Co y Mn z O2) on graphite sheets for the electrochemical leaching of lithium. Direct electrooxidation method for leaching from the prepared electrode sheets can achieve the selective leaching rate of Li+ close to 100% in Na2CO3 solution. In addition, the electron transfer mechanism was investigated during the electrooxidation process. Under optimal conditions, the same electrolyte solution was electrolyzed 40 times to enrich lithium by replacing fresh electrode sheets. Since there was almost no leaching of other metals, there was no need to add precipitants to obtain battery-grade Li2CO3 through evaporation and concentration. This strategy not only circumvents the risk of secondary pollution caused by the use of a large number of leaching agents but also shortens the lithium recycling process.

Abstract:In this paper, a green, efficient and low-cost process for the selective recovery of lithium from spent LiFePO 4 by anodic electrolysis is proposed. The leaching rates of Li, Fe and P under different conditions were explored and the optimal conditions are obtained. In the optimal conditions, Li, Fe and P leaching rates were 96.31%, 0.06% and 0.62% respectively. The Li/Fe selectivity was over 99.9%. The product obtained is isostructural FePO 4 and retains the original particle morphology. The FePO 4 obtained can be synthesised into LiFePO 4 /C by direct regeneration process or impurity removal regeneration process. The material synthesized by the latter process has a better electrochemical performance, with a discharge specific capacity of 144.5 mAh/g at 1.0C and a capacity retention of 92.0% over 500cycles. The superior performance can be attributed to an impurity removal process that reduced agglomeration and improved particle morphology.

Abstract:The pretreatment of cathode material from spent lithium-ion batteries is employed for the purpose of selective lithium leaching, which combines reduction roasting with mechanochemical activation without any additives. Under a nitrogen atmosphere (600 degrees C, 240 min), lithium in the cathode material changes into lithium salts and other metals transform into low-valence/elemental states via intricate reactions between LiMnxCoyNizO2 and inherent carbon. Then, the transition metals at low-valence and elemental states exhibit relatively slow leaching rates in a short time period, while lithium can efficiently migrate into solution. To further optimize this process, mechanochemical activation via ball milling (10 Hz, 30 min) is employed, decreasing the particle size and inducing a transition from crystal to an amorphous phase, facilitating the efficiency of lithium leaching. Under the low-temperature and short-duration leaching conditions (35 degrees C, 5 min, 2 mol/L H2SO4, 100 g/L), nearly 91.6% lithium is leached out, and the selectivity reaches 92.2%. The lithium solution is further purified by the extractant Versatic 10, and high-purity Li2CO3 is precipitated by adding Na2CO3. This method is also applied to selectively leach lithium from LiCoO2 and LiNiO2 cathodes, achieving remarkable leaching efficiencies of 95.8 and 100%, respectively.

Abstract:With the arrival of the scrapping wave of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) batteries, a green and effective solution for recycling these waste batteries is urgently required. Reasonable recycling of spent LiFePO 4 (SLFP) batteries is critical for resource recovery and environmental preservation. In this study, mild and efficient, highly selective leaching of lithium from spent lithium iron phosphate was achieved using potassium pyrosulfate (K 2 S 2 O 7 ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) as leaching agents. The leaching rates of lithium and iron were 99.83 % and 0.34 %, respectively, at the optimal leaching conditions of 4 vol% 30 wt% H 2 O 2 , 0.08 mol/L K 2 S 2 O 7 , 25°C, 5 min, and a solid–liquid ratio of 20 g/L. Meanwhile, the mechanism of the leaching process was explored by thermodynamic, XRD, XPS, FTIR, and SEM analyses. The leaching solution was concentrated and purified, with the addition of potassium carbonate (K 2 CO 3 ) to convert lithium into lithium carbonate (Li 2 CO 3 ). A small amount of sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) is added to the saline wastewater after precipitation, which can be converted into a leaching agent for recycling after heat treatment. This study provides a sustainable green process for the recovery of lithium iron phosphate and a new idea for resource recovery.

Abstract:This work designs a new method for recovering spent LiFePO 4 cathode materials, aiming to address issues with traditional hydrometallurgy processes such as complex operations, low lithium recovery rates, and high wastewater discharge. The method involves using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of chloroacetic acid and ethanol, and oxygen as an oxidant, for the cooperative leaching of LiFePO 4 powders. Based on the acidic nature of the DES and the oxidizing properties of oxygen, LiFePO 4 was undergone an in-situ transformation into solid FePO 4 , while 100% of lithium was dissolved in the DES with high selectivity. The FePO 4 product can be recovered by filtration, and the addition of oxalic acid to the filtrate allows for lithium recovery. Importantly, the structure of the DES remained unchanged after use, allowing for three recycling cycles without a significant decrease in LiFePO 4 recovery efficiency. This process is environmentally friendly, with no generation of acidic or alkaline wastewater, and boasts high metal recovery rates, showcasing its huge potential for application.

Abstract:The accumulation of spent LiFePO4 is forming a “Li mine” in urban areas. Those “resources” not only cause waste of metal species but also seriously pollute the environment. The pursuit of a clean recycling way with minimized chemicals and secondary wastes has long been researched to close the supply chain of strategic elements such as Li. This research presents a straightforward and effective electrochemical method for the recovery of the spent LiFePO4 by electrochemically oxidizing LiFePO4 into FePO4 while releasing Li+ into Na2CO3 solution and collecting Li2CO3 in one step without using acids. The conversion of LiFePO4 to FePO4 is realized by anodic oxidation, and the leaching efficiency of Li reaches more than 98%. Overall, the electrochemical-assisted method is a promising clean recycling method that even could use the surplus energy of spent batteries to drive the recovery process with reduced environmental footprints.

Abstract:A new recovery method for fast and efficient selective leaching of lithium from lithium iron phosphate cathode powder is proposed. Lithium is expelled out of the Oliver crystal structure of lithium iron phosphate due to oxidation of Fe<math>2+</math> into Fe<math>3+</math> by ammonium persulfate. 99% of lithium is therefore leached at 40 °C with only 1.1 times the amount of ammonium persulfate without the help of acid treatment. The use of ammonium persulfate also avoids the necessity to remove other metal ions in the later purification process. Various characterization methods including SEM, XPS, XRD are used to explore the experimental leaching mechanism. Theoretical investigations are performed which reveals the E-pH diagram of Fe–P–Li–H2O thermodynamic equilibrium. It confirms the possibility and suggests appropriate pH range allowing direct conversion from lithium iron phosphate to iron phosphate with great energy saving and reduced use of acid and base. Based on the experimental and theoretical results, a green and efficient closed-loop recycling route for lithium iron phosphate is proposed.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are becoming widely used in the electric vehicle industry. Owing to its low cost, good stability, and long cycle life, lithium iron phosphate becomes the most widely used power battery. With widespread use of Li-ion batteries, a large number of spent batteries are generated. Effective recycling of these spent batteries has enormous economic and environmental benefits. The only valuable metal in lithium iron phosphate is lithium, so a selective recovery method is required. A formic acid–hydrogen peroxide system is employed for selective leaching of lithium ions. Optimal leaching conditions are obtained by single-factor optimization: formic acid concentration of 0.8 mol/L, solid–liquid ratio of 50 g/L, initial hydrogen peroxide volume fraction of 8 %, temperature of 60 °C, and a reaction time of 1 h. Under these optimal leaching conditions, the extent of lithium leaching reaches 99.9 %, while that of iron is only 0.05 %. The optimal leaching conditions are verified by multi-factor response surface experiments, and the results obtained by the two methods are very similar. Using sodium carbonate precipitation to recover lithium ions from the leach filtrate, the primary precipitation extent and purity of the lithium product achieve 85.05 % and 99.9 %, respectively.

Abstract:A green environmental protection and enhanced leaching process was proposed to recover all elements from spent lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) lithium batteries. In order to reduce the influence of Al impurity in the recovery process, NaOH was used to remove impurity. After impurity removal, the spent LiFePO4 cathode material was used as raw material under the H2SO4 system, and the pressure oxidation leaching process was adopted to achieve the preferential leaching of lithium. The E-pH diagram of the Fe-P-Al-H2O system can determine the stable region of each element in the recovery process of spent LiFePO4 Li-batteries. Under the optimal conditions (500 r.min(-1), 15 h, 363.15 K, 0.4 MPa, the liquid-solid ratio was 4:1 ml.g(-1) and the acid-material ratio was 0.29), the leaching rate of Li was 99.24%, Fe, Al, and Ti were 0.10%, 2.07%, and 0.03%, respectively. The Fe and P were precipitated and recovered as FePO4 center dot 2H(2)O. The kinetic analysis shows that the process of high-pressure acid leaching of spent LiFePO4 materials depends on the surface chemical reaction. Through the life cycle assessment (LCA) of the spent LiFePO4 whole recovery process, eight midpoint impact categories were selected to assess the impact of recovery process. The results can provide basic environmental information on production process for recycling industry. Abstract:A sustainable closed-loop method for recovering waste lithium iron phosphate batteries is developed in this paper. Li + was selectively leached from cathode materials in a system of NaHSO 4 and H 2 O 2 . Under the optimal conditions of leaching temperature of 65 °C, 1.1 times molar quantity NaHSO 4 , 2 vol% H 2 O 2 , solid-liquid ratio of 100 g/L and leaching time of 15 min, the leaching efficiency of Li can reach 99.84%, while Fe is only 0.048%. Meanwhile, XRD, FTIR, XPS and TEM analysis were carried out to explore the conversion mechanism in the oxidation leaching process of the original raw and leaching products. Li + in the filtrate was precipitated with Na 2 CO 3 and converted into Li 2 CO 3 . The precipitated salty wastewater can be converted into leaching agent for recycling by adding a certain amount of sulfuric acid. The recycled products are used to synthesize LiFePO 4 materials, and regenerated LiFePO 4 materials show good electrochemical properties. The discharge capacity displays 141.3 mAhg −1 at 1C, with the capacity retention rate of 99.4% after 200 cycles. This study provides a sustainable closed-loop process for recycling and reuse of waste LiFePO 4 batteries, which promotes resource conservation and environmental protection.
