Abstract:Recovery of critical materials from end-of life (EOL) lithium-ion batteries (LIB) is gaining interest as demands for materials grows. Hydrometallurgical processes start with an intermediate product known as black mass which contains critical materials of interest (Co, Ni, Li, and graphite) as well as impurities such as Cu, Al, and Fe. These impurities are deleterious to downstream separation processes, as well as impact functionality of the final products. These impurities effectively compete with most solvent extraction (SX) and metal recovery processes to diminish the overall yields of the desired materials. In this work, a process flowsheet is presented where a previously reported electrochemical leaching (ECL) process is followed by selective precipitation using diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAP) to remove Cu, Al, and Fe from LIB leachate solutions. The electrochemical leach process removes Cu and produces a pH-adjusted leachate, ca. pH 2, without requiring an extra Cu extraction step. The addition of the precipitant DAP to leachate by slightly adjusting the pH to 3–4 at 45 °C, precipitates 95–99% of Al and Fe as their phosphates and the leachate retains >95% of Co, Ni and Li. After the filtration of phosphate impurities, the solution is ready for further processing, such as SX. As an unexpected result from the leachate processing, 20–30% of the Ni and Co co-crystalize as the double salt after cooling to room temperature, which could provide a shorter route to their recovery.

Abstract:Because of continuing global use of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) in particular in electric vehicles, there is a need for sustainable recycling of spent LIBs. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been reported as "green solvents" for low‐cost and sustainable recycling. However, the lack of understanding of the coordination mechanisms between DESs and transition metals (Ni, Mn and Co) and Li makes selective separation of transition metals with similar physicochemical properties practically difficult. Here, we found that the transition metals and Li have a different stable coordination structure with the different anions in DES during leaching. Furthermore, based on the different solubility of these coordination structures in anti‐solvent (acetone), a leaching and separation process system is designed, which enables high selective recovery of transition metals and Li from spent cathode LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (NCM111), with recovery of acetone. We also evidence recovery of spent LiCoO2 (LCO) cathode and establish a significant selective recovery for Co and Li, together with recovery and reuse of acetone and DES. We conclude that the tuning of cation‐anion coordination structure and anti‐solvent crystallization are practical for selective recovery of critical metal resources in the spent LIBs recycling. Abstract:In terms of environmental pollution and the shortage of resources, an efficient recovery of valuable metals in spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is currently the most promising measure to achieve green sustainability of cathode materials. In this study, an ethanol-assisted choline chloride (ChCl)/benzenesulfonic acid (BSA) ternary deep eutectic solvent ( e.g. , ChCl:BSA:Ethanol = 1:1:2 in molar ratio) was designed and applied to efficiently leach lithium (Li) and cobalt (Co) from spent LIBs under mild conditions. The experimental results show that the leaching efficiencies of Li and Co can reach 99% and 98%, respectively, under the optimal conditions: (i) a reaction temperature of 90 °C, (ii) a Solid/Liquid ratio of 20 g L−1 , (iii) ChCl:BSA:Ethanol with a molar ratio of 1:1:2 and (iv) a reaction time of 2 h. The kinetics of the leaching process shows that the leaching is controlled by a surface chemical reaction. Furthermore, the Co2+ in the leachate can be directly converted into Co3O4 via precipitation of H2C2O4 and NaOH and calcination. The recovered high-value product Co3O4 can regenerate the LiCoO2 cathode material . This study provides a new method for the green recovery of spent LIB cathode materials with high efficiency and low energy consumption.

Abstract:As the abundance of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries continues to increase, it is significant to recover valued metals in an eco-friendly way, yet this remains a challenge. Based on a novel deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of betaine hydrochloride and lactic acid, we developed a combined DES–ethanol selective separation process for extracting valuable metals from spent LiCoO2 batteries, with a high efficiency. This process accomplished the complete leaching of lithium-ion battery (LIBs) cathode materials by DES. The selective separation of lithium and cobalt was accomplished by changing the coordination environment of transition metal ions in DES using ethanol. The strategy was also applicable to LiNi x Co y Mn1–x–y batteries with different compositions and efficiently achieved stepwise transition metal separation. Further, we analyzed in depth the detailed selective extraction mechanism. This green and high-efficiency recycling process is a promising candidate for recovering valuable metals from used LIBs. The proposed method is particularly attractive due to its high selectivity, considerable economic advantages, and environmental benefits.

Abstract:Given the growing volume of discarded lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the extraction and recovery of valuable metals through environmentally-friendly solvent processes have become crucial, but they remain challenging tasks. Deep eutectic solvent (DES), an innovative and green solvents, have demonstrated significant promise in the extraction of valued metal elements from spent LIBs. This work employed a multifunctional DES based on natural molecules dimethyl-beta-propiothetin (DMPT) and ethylene glycol (EG) for the efficient leaching of transition metal ions. Under the reduction effect of EG and the action of carboxyl groups and chloride ions in DMPT, the leaching rate of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn can reach 99.59%, 99.28%, 99.04%, and 99.45%, respectively. Furthermore, DFT calculations were employed to explore the microstructure of DES and its interactions with metal ions. The main active site in the DES molecule is near the chloride ion, and DES binds most strongly to Mn, followed by Co, and weakest to Ni. This work avoids the use of volatile acids and demonstrates great potential in extracting valuable metals, providing a sustainable and environment-friendly alternative for the efficient recycling of waste LIBs.

Abstract:In the realm of sustainable, portable energy solutions and carbon reduction, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have emerged as a mainstay in electronic devices and electric vehicles, thanks to their exceptional performance. However, with the burgeoning production of LIBs, there's a parallel increase in waste batteries, posing significant environmental challenges. Notably, over 25% of LIBs manufacturing costs stem from the cathode active materials, which are rich in valuable metals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese. In this context, the imperative for green, efficient recycling technologies is clear, both to enable resource recovery and to mitigate the environmental and health risks posed by hazardous substances. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have come to the forefront in this arena, offering promising avenues for the recovery of green metal resources. Known for their potent efficacy in leaching metal oxides, DESs also boast eco-friendly attributes including affordability, recyclability, and biodegradability. This paper delves into the recent advancements in utilizing DES for leaching valuable metals from the cathode materials of spent LIBs. We place special emphasis on innovative methods and perspectives aimed at enhancing leaching efficiency and recovery separation. Furthermore, we address existing challenges in DES-based metal leaching and propose directions for future research and development.

Abstract:Recently, the production and demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has increased owing to increasing number of electric vehicles and products. This surge has considerably increased spent LIBs, leading to environmental damage and economic losses. Thus, the recycling of spent LIBs is critical because it allows the recovery of valuable metals and helps mitigate environmental effects. This work introduces a novel environmentally friendly and biodegradable deep eutectic solvent (DES) for leaching valuable metals from waste LIBs, which includes ascorbic acid (VC) derived from fruits and dimethyl-beta-propiothetin chloride (DMSP) derived from fish attractants. It is noteworthy that the utilization of chemical reagents in this study was significantly diminished. VC and DMSP accounting for 16.5% and 8.5% of total solvents, respectively—which decreased recycling costs and alleviated environmental burden. The leaching of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (LNCM111) cathode materials was rapidly reached at a low temperature of 50°C within 14 min. The coordinated action of Cl− ions and reducing effect of VC in DMSP resulted in a 99% leaching efficiency for lithium, cobalt, manganese, and nickel. In addition, the leaching mechanism was comprehensively investigated via kinetics and density functional theory calculations. This efficient, easy-to-operate, low-cost, and sustainable leaching process involving the DES demonstrates considerable potential for recycling LIBs, offering an environmentally friendly and effective solution for LIB reuse.

Abstract:A novel bifunctional deep-eutectic solvent (DES) based on glycol (EG) and oxalic acid dihydrate (OAD) was designed for efficient and selective extraction of valuable metals from spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) cathode active materials (LiCoO2 or Li14.8Ni1.7Co8.5MnO30.5) under mild conditions, realizing complete in situ separation of Li and Co/Ni/Mn. The effects of different experimental parameters on Li and Co extraction efficiencies (η Li, η Co) were explored by orthogonal and single-factor experiments in detail. Under the optimal conditions (90 °C, 5EG:1OAD, 12 h, 16 g/L), nearly 94.4 and 94.1% of Li, as well as trace amounts of Co/Ni/Mn (<1.2%), were separately leached from LiCoO2 and Li14.8Ni1.7Co8.5MnO30.5 into the filtrate, while the oxalate dihydrates (CoC2O4·2H2O or (Ni, Co, Mn)C2O4·2H2O) with nanorod structures were achieved. The specific leaching mechanism was elucidated. Moreover, the lithium oxalate (Li2C2O4) with irregular particle morphology was also obtained by evaporating the filtrate at 200 °C. The reusability of the as-prepared DES (5EG:1OAD) for the LIBs was also studied. After three cycles of DES leaching, the η Li could still reach more than 93%, while almost all Co was remained in the solid phase. This study may shed light on developing bifunctional or even multifunctional DESs to achieve highly selective extraction of metals from LIBs.

Abstract:Key resources necessary for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) will deplete rapidly if recycling is not considered given the significant demand for LIBs. However, the current recovery method from spent LIBs is hindered by low efficiency, high energy consumption, and severe environmental issues, which curtail the sustainability of recycling industry. Here, we propose a new strategy for selective elements extraction from LiCoO2 based on H2O-balance-regulated cation-anion competitive coordination. The lithium can be preferentially precipitated in deep eutectic solvents (DES) with an appropriate amount of H2O. Such a preferential lithium behaviors contributes to the subsequent precise separation of transition metal elements by further adjusting the water content, thus enabling the recovery of all element and direct regeneration of DES for further spent LIB recycling. The developed DES-based technology can achieve the ultrahigh leaching efficiency of 99.99% for Li and Co with an acceptable recovery efficiency of Li and Co (≥ 91.23%) and a desirable purity of recycled Li2C2O4 and CoC2O4∙2H2O (≥ 98.43%). These Li and Co performances are still maintained at this level even after three-time regeneration of DES. This methodology can also be extended to other recycling chemistries of spent LIBs and lay the theoretical foundation for the recovery of valuable metals from spent battery materials using DESs with a simple process, low energy consumption, and waste-free recycling.

Abstract:As the demand for lithium-ion batteries rises, the growing quantity of waste produced from lithium-ion battery electrode materials becomes an issue of concern. We propose a novel approach for effectively extracting precious metals from cathode materials that address the problem of secondary pollution and high energy consumption that arise from the conventional wet recovery process. The method employs a natural deep eutectic solvent (NDES) composed of betaine hydrochloride (BeCl) and citric acid (CA). The leaching rates of manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lithium (Li), and cobalt (Co) in cathode materials may reach 99.2 %, 99.1 %, 99.8 %, and 98.8 %, respectively, due to the synergy of strong coordination ability (Cl - ) and reduction (CA) in NDES. This work avoids the use of hazardous chemicals while achieving total leaching in a short period (30 min) at a low temperature (80 °C), achieving an efficient and energy-saving aim. It reveals that NDES has a high potential for recovering precious metals from cathode materials and offers a viable, environmentally friendly method of recycling used lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have significant selective leaching efficiency in the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Here, a new type of DES, consisting of caprolactam (CPL), urea (UR), and formic acid (FA), was designed for extracting valuable metal lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2, LCO) from cathode active materials of spent LIBs. Results illustrate that Li+ ions can be selectively leached in the supernatant of DESs, with leaching efficiencies >99% under optimized conditions (20 g/L, 120 °C, 150 min), and cycle extraction times without electrodeposition can be more than 20 times. Meanwhile, Co3+ ions were reduced to form a purple NH4Co(HCOO)3 precipitation located at the bottom of DESs, which can be directly recovered. Moreover, Li+ leaching kinetics was controlled by the interfacial chemical reaction, and the apparent activation energy was about 50.05 kJ/mol. Noteworthily, the FA with strong reducing capacity is the nucleus of efficient leaching, UR is an ideal carrier for Co ion coordination, and the CPL with almost no consumption is the key to multiple cyclic leaching. This research offers a feasible path for the application of DESs in the field of recycling of spent LIBs.

Abstract:With the penetration of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) into electric vehicles, the recycling of waste LIBs is inevitable from the perspective of health, economy and environmental protection. Herein is reported a novel green method for extracting valuable metals from the cathode of LIBs, in which the Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) is used as leachate to dissolve electrode material waste. Mixing choline chloride (ChCl) and malonic acid is helpful to effectively improve the reduction ability of DES, resulting in superior leaching efficiency. At the lower temperature (100 °C), the leaching efficiency of cobalt and lithium reached up to 98.61% and 98.78%, respectively. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy demonstrated that DESs could act as both leachate and reducing agent, which could destroy the covalent bonds of metal oxides to form a cobalt (II)-chlorine complex. This method is straightforward to operate and does not involve the additional reducing agents, which is held promise to bring economic and sustainable development prospects in the field of lithium battery development.

Abstract:The rise and development of electric vehicles have brought much attention to the recycling of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the recovery of critical metals from LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (NCM) is a challenge, especially for the nickel and cobalt, which have similar chemical properties. Here, a novel ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and tartaric acid was proposed. Our protocol of DES synthesis, nickel separation, and leaching of cobalt and manganese were integrated into one step, which significantly simplified the recovery process. The crystallization occurring during DES leaching was subjected to detailed investigation. The lithium, nickel, and cobalt were sequentially separated as Li2CO3, NiO, and Co(OH)2 by anterior formic acid leaching and posterior electrodeposition. After electrodeposition, DES was reused. This work provides new ideas for the sequential separation of critical metals from NCM and has great application prospects.

Abstract:The environmentally friendly and efficient recovery of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can mitigate environmental pollution and enhance resource utilization efficiency. This study proposed a process for coating spent NCM cathode powder (LiNi x Co y Mn z O2) on graphite sheets for the electrochemical leaching of lithium. Direct electrooxidation method for leaching from the prepared electrode sheets can achieve the selective leaching rate of Li+ close to 100% in Na2CO3 solution. In addition, the electron transfer mechanism was investigated during the electrooxidation process. Under optimal conditions, the same electrolyte solution was electrolyzed 40 times to enrich lithium by replacing fresh electrode sheets. Since there was almost no leaching of other metals, there was no need to add precipitants to obtain battery-grade Li2CO3 through evaporation and concentration. This strategy not only circumvents the risk of secondary pollution caused by the use of a large number of leaching agents but also shortens the lithium recycling process.

Abstract:A novel synergistic extractant consisting of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) and tri‐n‐butyl phosphate (TBP) is proposed for selective extraction of valuable metals from waste lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). The extraction efficiencies of Ni2+, Co2+, and Mn2+ were 99.8%, 99.1%, and 95.9%, respectively, and high‐purity Li+ was enriched in the raffinate after the single‐stage extraction. Valuable metal salts, lithium carbonate (92.3 wt%) and cobalt oxalate (94.9 wt%), were obtained. The DES + TBP extractant retained its high extraction performance even after multiple regeneration cycles. Abstract:The advancement of the electric vehicle industry has inevitably resulted in the increased production and numerous scraps of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), among which the nickel cobalt manganese ternary material has become the fastest growing and largest proportion material in the lithium battery cathode material market. Therefore, a practical and effective method to recycle spent LIBs must be established. In this study, an efficient recycling method was proposed to leach value metals from cathode materials via the excellent solubility of deep eutectic solvents to metals, and regenerated LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 was prepared via coextraction and coprecipitation. 91.63% of Li, 92.52% of Co, 94.92% of Ni, and 95.47% of Mn are leached from the recycled cathode electrode. The kinetic experiments indicated that the leaching process fitted well to the shrinking core model controlled by chemical reactions. The value metals could be extracted with high efficiencies by adjusting the operating parameters in the step of coextraction. Moreover, the electrochemical tests of the regenerated ternary material revealed that the material had an excellent electrochemical performance. The proposed method, which can realize the sustainable development of spent LIBs, has great potential in the deep recycling of spent LIBs.

Abstract:The resources scarcity and explosive growing demand of lithium have made the selective extraction of lithium from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) more and more widely concerned. Yet the current lithium recovery routes still suffer the problems of complex process, low efficiency and unfriendly environment. In this study, a strategy of selective lithium extraction from spent LiNixCoyMnzO2 cathode with ethylene glycol (EG) in subcritical water system is proposed. The in-situ conversion pathway and lithium extraction mechanism in this new system are investigated in detail. Benefit from the reducibility of EG and the dynamic strengthening of the subcritical water system, more than 99% of lithium can be selectively extracted into the solution under the optimal conditions. The leaching kinetics show that the selective leaching process is controlled by chemical reactions and the leaching mechanism suggests that EG plays a dual role of reducing and donating protons in subcritical environment. Furthermore, the lithium-containing leachate can be applid to prepare Li2CO3 products with high purity, and the transition metals (Ni, Co, Mn) in the lithium extraction residue are recovered by acid leaching without adding reducing agent. This process puts forward a innovative idea for preferentially extracting lithium from spent LIBs and even lithium-containing wastes, which has the significant advantages of high efficiency, environmental protection and simplicity.

One-step selective separation and efficient recovery of valuable metals from mixed spent lithium batteries in the phosphoric acid system

Abstract:The recovery of valuable elements in spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has attracted more and more attention. Efficient recovery of valuable elements from spent LIBs with lower consumption and shorter process is the target that people have been pursuing. In this study, the valuable metals (Ni, Co, Mn and Li) and FePO 4 products are simultaneously recovered from mixed spent LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 and LiFePO 4 in one step under the optimized condition of 0.88 M H 3 PO 4 , a mass ratio of LFP/NCM of 2:1, a L/S ratio of 33:1 and 80 °C for 120 min without additional auxiliary reagents. Over 60 % of acid consumption is reduced and the process of adjusting pH is avoidable. The leaching efficiencies of the valuable elements reach up to 99.1 % for Ni, 98.9 % for Co, 99.6 % for Li and 97.3 % for Mn. Almost all of Fe is precipitated as FePO 4 ·2H 2 O. By means of the empirical model, the research on leaching kinetics demonstrates that the leaching reaction is internal diffusion-controlled with the apparent activation energy of valuable metals less than 30 kJ/mol. Furthermore, the redox reaction mechanism between spent LiBs has been explored. And the intrinsic driving force in the phosphoric acid system is found out. This finding may provide an innovative and selective recycling method for valuable elements from mixed spent LIBs with high economic benefit and fewer environmental footprints.
