Abstract:Hilbert's program was an ambitious and wide-ranging project in the philosophy and foundations of mathematics. In order to "dispose of the foundational questions in mathematics once and for all, "Hilbert proposed a two-pronged approach in 1921: first, classical mathematics should be formalized in axiomatic systems; second, using only restricted, "finitary" means, one should give proofs of the consistency of these axiomatic systems. Although Godel's incompleteness theorems show that the program as originally conceived cannot be carried out, it had many partial successes, and generated important advances in logical theory and meta-theory, both at the time and since. The article discusses the historical background and development of Hilbert's program, its philosophical underpinnings and consequences, and its subsequent development and influences since the 1930s.

Abstract:The aim of this short note is to prove the formula of the Hilbert series of the preprojective algebras in arbitrary characteristic by making effective use of the formulas of the Hilbert series of differential graded (dg) algebras with Adams grading. We also compute the Hilbert series of the quiver Heisenberg algebras, a special class of central extensions of preprojective algebras.

Abstract:MP is a package of ANSI Standard Fortran (ANS X3.9-1966) subroutines for performing multiple-precision floating-point arithmetic and evaluating elementary and special functions. The subroutines are machine independent and the precision is arbitrary, subject to storage limitations. The User's Guide describes the routines and their calling sequences, example and test programs, use of the Augment precompiler, and gives installation instructions for the package.

Abstract:We present MaRTIn, an extendable all-in-one package for calculating amplitudes up to two loops in an expansion in external momenta or using the method of infrared rearrangement. Renormalizable and non-renormalizable models can be supplied by the user; an implementation of the Standard Model is included in the package. In this manual, we discuss the scope and functionality of the software, and give instructions of its use.

Abstract:We use a model operator approach and the spectral theorem for self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space to derive the basic results of abstract left-definite theory in a straightforward manner. The theory is amply illustrated with a variety of concrete examples employing scales of Hilbert spaces, fractional Sobolev spaces, and domains of (strictly) positive fractional powers of operators, employing interpolation theory. In particular, we explicitly describe the domains of positive powers of the harmonic oscillator operator in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ $\big($and hence that of the Hermite operator in $L^2\big(\mathbb{R}; e^{-x^2}dx)\big)\big)$ in terms of fractional Sobolev spaces, certain commutation techniques, and positive powers of (the absolute value of) the operator of multiplication by the independent variable in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$.

Abstract:We expand Hilbert series technologies in effective field theory for the inclusion of massive particles, enabling, among other things, the enumeration of operator bases for non-linearly realized gauge theories. We find that the Higgs mechanism is manifest at the level of the Hilbert series, as expected for the partition function of an S -matrix that is subject to the Goldstone equivalence theorem. In addition to massive vectors, we detail how other massive, spinning particles can be studied with Hilbert series; in particular, we spell out the ingredients for massive gravity in general spacetime dimensions. Further methodology is introduced to enable Hilbert series to capture the effect of spurion fields acquiring vevs. We apply the techniques to the Higgs Effective Field Theory (HEFT), providing a systematic enumeration of its operator basis. This is achieved both from a direct and a custodial symmetry spurion-based approach; we compare and contrast the two approaches, and our results to those appearing in previous literature.

Abstract:This article is a study guide for "Trilinear smoothing inequalities and a variant of the triangular Hilbert transform" by Christ, Durcik, and Roos. We first present the standard techniques in the study of oscillatory integrals with the simpler toy model of a Hilbert transform along a parabola. These standard techniques prove to be insufficient in the study of the triangular Hilbert transform with curvature. The central and novel idea in their proof of the $L^p$-boundedness of the triangular Hilbert transform with curvature is a trilinear smoothing inequality which we also examine in this article.

Abstract:This text is intended to become in the long run Chapter 3 of our long saga dedicated to Riemann, Ahlfors and Rohlin. Yet, as its contents evolved as mostly independent (due to our inaptitude to interconnect both trends as strongly as we wished), it seemed preferable to publish it separately. More factually, our account is an attempt to get familiarized with the current consensus about Hilbert's 16th in degree 8. This is a nearly finished piece of mathematics, thanks heroic breakthroughs by Viro, Fiedler, Korchagin, Shustin, Chevallier, Orevkov, yet still leaving undecided six tantalizing bosons among a menagerie of 104 logically possible distributions of ovals (respecting Bézout, Gudkov periodicity, and the Fiedler-Viro imparity law sieving away 4+36 schemes). This quest inevitably involves glimpsing deep into the nebula referrable to as Viro's patchworking, and the likewise spectacular obstructional laws of Fiedler, Viro, Shustin, Orevkov. In the overall, the game is much comparable to a pigeons hunting video-game, where 144 birds are liberated in nature, with some of them strong enough to fly higher and higher in the blue sky as to rejoin the stratospheric paradise of eternal life (construction of a scheme in the algebro-geometric category). Some other, less fortunate, birds were killed (a long time ago) and crashed down miserably over terrestrial crust (prohibition). Abstract:We give very simple proofs of the classical results of Magnus and Hill on the spectral properties of the Hilbert matrix $$ H = \left ( {1 \over i+j+ 1 } \right )_{i,j\geq 0} $$ which defines a bounded linear operator on the sequence space $\ell^2$. In particular, we use the Mehler-Fock transform to find the spectrum and the latent eigenfunctions of the Hilbert matrix, that is, we show that the spectrum of $H$ is $[0,\pi]$ with no eigenvalues (Magnus' result) and describe all complex sequences $x$ such that $Hx=\mu x$ for some complex number $\mu$ (Hill's result).
